5-0 out of 5 stars The first effective unified protocol for anxiety disorders
Eifert and Forsyth come up with the first unified treatment for all anxiety disorders that actually works--an accomplishment that deserves a place in the history of psychotherapy. They do a superb job at making their protocol accessible to therapists that are new to acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), including students. In the first chapters of the book, the authors explain with both rigor and clarity what ACT is all about, and contrast it with CBT.In a nutshell, while CBT focuses on symptom management and reduction, ACT focuses on symptom acceptance and doing, in spite of all the inner stuff that may show up, for purposes of living a chosen, valued life.ACT claims convincingly that the road to a good life and mental health is not trying to feel good, but to become able to do what is required (i.e., act) to live a meaningful life, guided by a person's valued directions.ACT is a new, powerful therapy, already with remarkable empirical support, that combines the best of what the psychotherapy world has to offer, that is, acceptance- and mindfulness-based, as well as experiential and existential-humanistic therapies with behavioral interventions, in particular exposure.Maybe exposure work, perhaps the main contribution of the behavioral traidition to psychotherapy, best illustrates the contrats between ACT and CBT: while in CBT exposure is undertaken with the purpose of reducing symptomatology, in ACT it is undertaken with the purpose of increasing behavioral flexibility, i.e., expanding the behavioral repertoire of the person in the presence of anxiety provoking stimuli, and ultimately actualize willingness to move in the direction of the person's values.A truly extraordinary book, and a must read for any therapist who hopes to remain in the cutting edge of his profession. Finally, the editors at New Harbinger Publications deserve praise for the vision and creativity they have put into publishing ACT literature during the last few years. The book by Eifert and Forsyth is a remarkable outcome of such efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other "third-wave" behavioral approaches are changing the way many view psychopathology and processes of psychotherapeutic change.Eifert and Forsyth's ACT for Anxiety Disorders is an engaging and easy-to-comprehend book that should serve as a great introduction for those interested in learning more. With both integrative discussion of the theory behind this work and detailed clinical guidelines, it is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to incorporate mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches into his or her clinical work and/or research.Students consistently praise this book's readability and relevance; especially appreciated are the handouts that may be tailored to the specifics of a given client or target problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book for any clinician's library
In the wake of the growing popularity of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a number of books have been written that detail the ACT philosophy and approach to therapy. However, none is better than the recently published Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders by Georg H. Eifert and John P. Forsyth.Although the book is focused on treating anxiety disorders, the principles and techniques that are discussed are so far reaching that they are pertinent to the treatment of other types of psychopathology. Thus, this book is simply not just a `must read' for those who specialize in treating anxiety disorders but rather it is a book from which any psychotherapist at any level could benefit. What sets this book apart from others that describe the ACT and other like-minded approaches to therapy is that the authors have made the concepts easily digestible and the text effortless to read.At the same time, however, the authors have managed to keep the philosophy and approach undiluted. The techniques and "how-tos" are also presented in caring detail and integrated along with guidelines for case conceptualization.Another asset of the book is that the authors make every attempt to ground their approach in the state of the art psychological science. Not all "how-to" therapy books are as successful as this one in translating science into practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good data but needs more specific examples
I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the foundation of modern bullying prevention!
This clear, brief, and practical book is based on extensive research and outlines an intervention to prevent bullying. Dr. Olweus's work has become the standard approach to bullying prevention, reflected in such programs asthe University of Colorado "Blueprints for Violence Prevention"project ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others
When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids.I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all.I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together.Alas, it was not meant to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
This is my first choice for book recommendations in my practice for divorcing families. It is a blueprint for how to raise a well adjusted child in two homes. If divorced parents only followed the advice in this book divorce would not be so tragic for children. This book advocates putting the child first and tells parent how to behave civilly and work co-operatively with the other parent for the sake of the child, telling parents what to do and what to say that keeps your child out of the middle of the anger between former spouses. This book is for every divorcing family regardless of your unique circumstances.

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential book
This book breaks down the basics for families living under two roofs. It simplifies a very complicated, emotional process with rational, logical solutions. It is a must for any parents who share custody of their children. It will keep your decision-making based on what's best for the children and not about parental conflicts.A must-read for all shared custody families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE supervision text
It is easy to see why Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision is so frequently referred to as THE supervision text. Bernard and Goodyear successfully synthesize a vast (and growing) amount of multidisciplinary supervision literature into a single comprehensive source. The book is well written, and organized such that it makes for easy referencing. Each of the 12 chapters presents an in-depth examination of both seminal and contemporary writing related to clinical supervision. While the `Supervisor's toolbox' serves as a welcome resource for graduate students and new supervisors, the thorough presentation of the most up-to-date theoretical and empirical work informs seasoned supervisors and educators alike.

This book was okay.It seemed like a lot of common sense but also seemed like a good book for begining supervisors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable Reference Causes Doubt
On page 19, under the heading of Selective Perception and Communication, the authors indicate that "research" has shown that grades received by teachers reveal bias of the teacher as opposed to the actual level of knowledge of the child. Two specific examples are provided but WITHOUT citation to the supposed research.Since the research material is so well documented in the rest of the book, I question why they did not make the citation available here.I would like to read this research but am left without the option to find it myself.Ironically, my view of everything that I read in this book from this point on will be tarnished by this experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, calming resource
I wish I had read this book a long time ago, when my boyfriend's depression started. The information is pertinent and it gives tangible advice on what tp do for yourself and your depressed partner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent support for those whose partner is depressed
In this book, author Anne Sheffield offers excellent support to those who are involved wiht someone who is struggling with depression. The best thing about this book is the way in which it both normalizes and validates the responses of the non-depressed partner, assuring the reader that they are not going crazy and that they are not alone in their feelings of frustration and confusion.Sheffield also provides plenty of helpful information and advice, including educational information about depression, strategies for persuading your partner to seek help, ideas on how to set limits with your partner, and guidelines for deciding whether to stay or leave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book succintly provides critical information for judges, therapists, parent evaluators/GALs, and most importantly parents trying to protect their children from harm.It highlights the many misconceptions present in the legal system that enable abusers to continue to victimize their children and spouses, and explains how these situations should be addressed, backed by data to support the authors' conclusions. This is a credible well-written book that provides a rational counter to the awful theories of Richard Gardner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Male "victim" is obviously a perpetrator
Anyone with real experience and knowledge in the realm of domestic violence can clearly see that Bancroft is on target. He is one of the few authors who truly understands the dynamics of abuse and can accurately assess those who are truly abusers ... many of whom call themselves the "victims." There are definitive signs of men who abuse, though they work so hard to hide it that they get angry when they discover their attempts don't work with Brancroft.

If you are interested in any aspect of family practice, this book is a must have.I must agree with prior reviews of the book--it is definitely a hard read. Fortunately, I had the privilege of being taught the author(s)-Dr. Becvar is/was on of my professors.Once the class ended, I understood the systemic approach to family therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for MFTs
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I found this book to provide a clear discussion of Marriage and Family Therapy models, and their roots in cybernetics. It is oriented for clinicians who practice from a systemic perspective.I had the 2nd edition in my training program in the 1990's and find myself yet referring to it for ideas about case conceptualization and questions about theory and practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on emotional abuse
I have read many books on emotional abuse and this book, by far, is the best. Dr. Stosny must have been a fly on our wall over the last 25 years to be able to reiterate "verbatim" some of the conversations and events that have happened in our home.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable and helpful book!!!
An angry or emotionally abusive relationship is overwhelming and confusing to both the husband and wife.Steven Stosny gives you a method with specific steps to take to get yourself out of this horrible situation, with both of you healing and hopefully saving your marriage. It is a remarkable book that has changed my life for the better.I have also been to his boot camp, which I highly recommend.Thank you Steven for giving my husband and I the tools to profoundly change our relationship back to a happy and loving one.

Steven Stosny has found a way to help each and every one of us do better in our relationships and to become the loving beings we were born to be.The book is extremely well written and gives practical advise for all of us on how to do better, whether we are irritated and a little resentful or in full blown emotional abuse. This is a truly extraordinary book that gives the reader a guide to the profession of life coaching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helping "Helping Professionals" Reclaim Their Passion
This a an extraordinary book that belongs on the shelves (and in the heart) of every therapist AND every coach. Frankly, I've heard Pat Williams speak, so I fully expected to like the book, but even so, I was surprised by just how good, how inspiring, practical and helpful it is. Williams and Davis do a great service for mental health workers, counselors, social workers and Psychologists by affirming the power of what "we" do, and by expanding the boundaries within which we operate. At the same time, they also provide a great reminder for coaches of what WE do, how we do it, and how powerful it is!5-0 out of 5 stars You Have to Read This Book!

3-0 out of 5 stars this book is not for everyone
This book asks some good questions. There are important points that each couple should be talking about, however, the scoring for the test is very confusing. Also, my boyfriends parents are both deceased. Many of the questions are about your parents and family. The questions do not take into account the different circumstances in many people's lives. The questions are geared toward a young couple in an ideal situation. What about adoption or foster care families? We ended up being very frustrated after doing 2 chapters of the book.We decided to read the questions to each other and not score it.This way we use it to get to know each other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Use to spur important conversations
This book is a nice start for Christian couples (not recommended for people looking for a general, nonreligious/spiritual view) in that it raises important issues and encourages you to keep the discussion open afterward. The book is organized into topics such as Finance, Family Planning etc...and your future spouse answers the questions separately from you, guessing how you might answer, as well as answering for him/herself.Then the book asks you to grade how many questions you answered wrong/right, and sign a covenent on each subject based on things discussed. As thorough as this might be, there are some issues to keep in mind while reading this:1) The language assumes certain roles and biases, which you may or may not agree with whether or not you are a Christian. E.g. "My father usually left a good tip for the waitress/waiter in restaurants," or irrelevant questions such as questions assuming your parents are still together or their relationship was consistent throughout their marriage. Some of the questions don't seem to have been updated for several decades.2) You have to answer true or false, though many of the statements are not that easily answered. My fiancee and I ended up disregarding the scoring process, and discussing statements we thought were partly true or partly false rather than simplifying things to a T or F.The point is not to get a certain score after all, the point is to grow and learn about each other.3) The chapter on finances is somewhat unspecific, so my fiancee and I are going to read a guide to finance next. There are other topics that are broad as well, but this book is designed that way. It's up to you to follow through to the next steps. If you think finishing this book prepares you for marriage, you possibly are walking into marriage short-sighted.It is a good vehicle, however, for starting the conversation that you and your future spouse will continue to have for the rest of your lives.Good luck!

I had to purchase this book for a psychology practicum class. There simply isn't anything else around to fill it's shoes. That means we are stuck with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written
Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text.
I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text.If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class.I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.
5-0 out of 5 stars a therapy that gives hope
This is a well studied and important psychological modality which appears to be little known to the lay population. This book is clear and easily read. It will give hope to everyone who is at a juncture in their life. EMDR will certainly help with taking the next step towards self-actualization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sourcebook for Teachers
This particular item is an excellent overview of case management practice for beginning and experienced case managers alike.Every aspect of case management practice from definitions to professional boundary issues and ethics to listening skills is covered. While this volume handles each topic in depth, the writing is straight-forward and no-nonsense.This combination makes the information necessary for a thourough discussion on the topic very accessible even to the novice.Chapter 1 entitled "Ethics and Other Professional Responsibilitities for Human Services Workers" provides a strong base for the subsequent discussions which follow.Chapters 6 and &7, "Seeing Yourself as a Separate Person" and "Clarifying Who Owns the Problem", flush out issues which need to be addressed in today's expanding market of paraprofessional services.Read more
