5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Buddhist Thought and Meditation!
This book and Sakyong Mipham's more recent "Ruling Your World," are permanent fixtures in my library.Sometimes Buddhist writings can be difficult to understand or relate to, but this author has a Western background and is able to communicate ideas in ways that are easy to identify with for people without a background in Buddhist thought. Our culture and the media encourage "monkey mind," and it's hard to gain control of inner thought processes in a world that constantly communicates "Buy More, Do More, Be More."This book offers a means of calming the internal turmoil and developing your mind to reach its potential.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book-very helpful
This book has been helpful for dealing with anxiety/depression.I'm not much into just meditating or even following Buddhist thinking, however, there is value in what I've learned from this book -- disciplining the mind and learning to keep the mind "present".This has helped me from worrying "too far ahead" or losing perspective of life by helping strengthen my mind.I highly recommend this book along with practicing some form of meditation if you struggle with anxiety or negative/worrying thoughts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to meditation
I think what sets this book apart from others of its kind is the unmatched clarity and simplicity of the language. The unique situation here is that Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, an accomplished and very learned Tibetan Buddhist teacher, grew up in the West and so speaks our language like a native. Because of this, he is able to speak to us in a way that most other equally accomplished Tibetan lamas are unable to. It's important to emphasize that meditation is best learned and practiced under the guidance of a living human being who has some experience with it - a book alone will not suffice. But, having said that, this book is definitely a good companion to have when beginning your journey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not male-bashing, but patriarchy bashing
I am applying to graduate school to be a Marriage and Family Counselor and I believe this book will be my guiding star. I've read a few reviews that claim it to be "male-bashing" or "all women are right, all men are wrong". Those who have written this must have not read the caring, empathic way that Terry has addressed the hurt that disconnection has caused these men he chronicles. I have many wonderful men in my life - a caring father, two wonderful older brothers - and I understand Terry's point that masculine in not necessarily an assignation of gender. There are masculine and feminine qualities, and both genders can have any of them. Predominantly, the men have masculine ones - however, did these reviewers not notice the example of the woman who fled to the "power-up" position in a masculine fashion? The response is wrong - not the gender that has this response forced upon them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I would recommend this book to everyone, especially anyone who grew up in the 50's and 60's where children were "seen and not heard", where men were raised to be straight-backed leaders of the family and women were raised to achieve less. Terrence Real's writing is creative, intelligent and reveals his deep concern for his clients. This book addresses so many of the issues my family and friends struggle with that I bought additional copies as gifts for them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just once I'd like to read a relationship book that isn't male-bashing
I'm with Tom Breton (reviewer) on this.Jeez, every book it seems I have read on relationships that talk about men, women, and society basically says that it's "all the man's fault," in some way, shape or form.I would love to see a book on relationships that discusses the many ways women disappoint menrather than seeing vice versa all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
This is a really good book... I only wish I had it when I was a graduate student social worker. It would have helped me so much. What a terrific resource. My only regret:Susan you ought to write more books for student and entry level social workers. The reading was enjoyable, clear and took the mystery out of how-to-begin.Thank you, Susan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent primer for a family therapist, and is written as such. The text does not assume that the reader knows anything. It is a good introduction to family therapy for those who go above and beyond family counseling. As a mental health counseling grad student, I noticed that the text stays within its scope of family therapyt and does not stray from a this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beginning therapists!
This book will take you step-by-step through the process of doing psychotherapy from beginning to end. It is very user-friendly, basic and real. Out of my 8 textbooks this semester to read, this is the one that gets read first because of the valuable information it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and interesting therapeutic model.
Richard Schwartz clearly explains his therapeutic model of working with sub-personalities (parts) in a way that empowers the client to lead their lives from their Self instead of having one or more of their 'parts' run the show!Although I have intuitively been working this way in a gestalt framework, his model gives many guidelines to make this process smoother and avoid pitfalls in this type of work.An excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for those entering the counseling field.
Through personal application of the therapies described in this book, I found it to be profoundly enlightening. It shed bright lights on the origins of my own thoughts and self-talk. Experiencing the benefits of the therapies, seeing that they work, it provided the best form of teaching to me as to how it can be a valuable resource for helping one's self and for helping others. Having specialized in pastoral counseling while earning my Masters of Divinity degree, this book has done more to help me understand the multiple (and valuable) personalities all persons develop from childhood to adulthood and then how to use these therapies in a counseling setting. Its methods provide such a positive way of looking at ourselves, at other individuals, and at family dynamics. The concept of internal family systems therapy makes so much sense that I hope more therapists and counselors discover it, utilize it, and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book with permanently change your view of psychotherapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard C. Schwartz represents the author's attempt at documenting a fascinating journey into the inner lives of clients. His model uniquely applies systems thinking to internalprocess, seeing our inner lives as yet another level of human systems. As Iread this book, I was taken aback by how psychodynamics suddenly becamecoherent to me in a way that made intuitive and intellectual sense. Schwartz takes the reader through the development of the IFS model, anddemonstrates how the therapy emerged from his interactions with hisclients. He is successful in describing the step-by-step process of IFStherapy that is tied directly to the theory.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A college textbook for 2nd graders.....
This textbook reads like it was written for an elementary-school level, offering little to no insight into actual techniques for Interviewing and Therapeutic Counseling. My professor taught straight from it, so needless to say, I was waiting for her to instruct us that it was "nap-time".
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook and resource
I used this book in a Counseling Practicum course and was greatly impressed by the organization of the book, the vast number of examples, the clarity of the definitions, and topics covered. In particular, this book really addresses the complexity of doing counseling in a multicultural world and discusses the role of one's cultural worldview in how we make decisions and interpretations in counseling sessions. The exercises throughout each chapter are an excellent opportunity to practice the different skills and the process notes and comments are helpful in understanding the counseling dynamics. I also appreciated the way in which the authors' (Drs. Allen and Mary Ivey) share their own perspectives and experiences throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to people in helping professions, students, instructors, therapists, etc. I also received very positive feedback from students in my course about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The difference between a bartender and a counselor!
This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Myers of Biological Psychology
WOW! This is an incredibly illustrated and beautifully laid out book. The information is fantastic. It is suitable for undergraduate level or early graduate level biological psychology--- its not so detailed that it becomes dry and boring, yet, not too simple that it does the same. Its extremely easy to learn from and very up to date.If you are familiar with the industry-standard general psychology book by Myers-- this one comes close (if not farther) in the way of readability, accessibility to readers, and illustrations. Highly recommended! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Necessary, but useless
I was really looking forward to the class this book was necessary for. And while I learned a lot of interesting material, almost none of it was from the text. Nothing that i'm going to carry away from this class was learned from the book. While it gave the trival bits of information that were located in the test material, most of those you could gather from simple common sense. If you want to get anything out of a class using this as a text, hope your prof. likes to lecture. Otherwise... you're really going to hate it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely worthless
How do I even start on this book? A text for a class in college I bought this book looking forward to it, despite the drear subject. As the class progressed I found this book to contain contradicting information in many areas. In addition to this, the graphs are completely unintelligible, even our prof. gave up trying to make sense of them. The book also doesn't discuss the psychology of dying, but rather the practical aspects and biology of dying. As this class was a soc/psy class, this wasn't very helpful. If you're a prof. considering this text- please think again! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" ......
This is a great book. As an executive coach, I've seen so many talented coach's struggle to make a living. This book offers a variety of strategies to improve your business.I really liked the section on identifying what distracts you and ways to improve your focus.I think one of the most powerful sections is the one by Dr. Larina Kase that talks about developing successful strategic-referral partnerships.By applying this strategy, I have been able to target my market better and spend less time "blindly" marketing. This strategy alone has significantly increased my coaching and training business as well as my private counseling practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Branden has a unique approach to self-esteem. It is carefully presented and in keeping with Abraham Maslow's original idea of self-esteem. It is the position that my mind is capable of handling life and that I am worthy of happiness. Self-esteem is the result of certain practices, disciplines and attitudes that an individual holds. The book is clear and challenging.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for efficacy - i.e. it works
At 54, I've come to the astonishing conclusion that your life can be changed via books.

5-0 out of 5 stars OCD
This was a very informative and helpful book for both therapists and those seeking self-help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supportive and realistic
This book is exactly what it says - a complete guide. Very informative, practical help is given, with a strong element of understanding supportiveness at the same time. You can take this book, design a program for recovery, and implement it. Or, if you just want to understand more about the world of an OCD sufferer, you will find plenty of information here. I especially liked the sections covering realistic expectations in recovery, acceptances the sufferer needs to make in living with the disorder, and how to maintain a recovery over the long term. A lifeline to those suffering from OCD or their families, this book is hopeful and realistic at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. I highly recommend this book for the knowledge that it imparts as well as for the author's optimism and compassion, which are evident throughout the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Theory and Practice
This is an excellent presention of EFT for couple therapy. The theoretical underpinnings are presented in a way that does not detract from the aim of the book to help one learn how this work is done. There are lots of clear examples and explanations that give one the feeling they are ready to apply what they have learned in their next session.Written in a clear style free of jargon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise

Johnson does a beautiful job of laying out the process of effective therapy with couples in a manner that is both clear and respectful of the complexity of the process.Upon reading her book, it suddenly became clearto me why I have been successful with some couples and painfully inadequatewith others. It's been a real jump-start to my feeling alive and effectiveagain in therapy. 4-0 out of 5 stars A true revelation for me...
This book explained the elements of my 33-year marriage, the heart of our struggles and subsequent divorce. It touched on details of interactions that I did not realize were related.I wish I had read it decades ago.My only criticism is that the examples are mostly from couples who are dating or other short term relationships.I would like to see Mr. Wetzler do a second book dealing with the dynamics of a long term marriage, layered with the stresses of raising children and the family dynamic that results. It would deal with deeper and more complex issues.Still, the concepts presented in this book were so right on, that I was very surprised. It has helped me redefine a lot of elements of my life -- past, present, and future. I have given copies to my adult children and they are appreciating the explanations of mom and dad, as well as cautions for their own lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars I't not just me.
This book explains alot about the behaviors of a passive agressive man. It helped me tremendously to understand my frustration in dealing with this type of personality. I felt relieved that it was not "just me" and my reaction to this person. It was as if the book was written as a how to guide. Since reading this book I feel alot more settled inside.
5-0 out of 5 stars It reads like an interview with myself
This book validates the experiences of anyone who lives with a passive-aggressive personality man.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Displeased
I have had this book for two semsters at a grad level. The information is confusing and at times leaves one lost. I am very displeased with the book. It has not helped me in no way understanding the meaning behind behavioral stats. In fact I am more confused now. I wish the book could have given more details on explaining stats instead of so many examples. The examples are find but the problem is they are continued from the beginning of the book. And if one doesnot grasp the beginning then how can one grasp the remainer of the text. I wouldnot recommend this book to no one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and comprehensive introductory statistics text
I have been using this text for Levels 1, 2, and 3 social sciences statistics teaching in Britain and abroad for over 8 years now. Although I have tried using other introductory texts, I have yet to find a text as comprehensive and as clearly written as this.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst stats book for the social sciences
I hate to be so critical, but I must agree with my colleague who described his/her harrowing experience with this textbook. I have two rules about learning statistics: no one is ever above a review of the most basic topics and an author/professor can never go wrong by providing a variety of examples within the same topic area. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long. ... Read more
