3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and useful book, but lacks multi-cultural flavor.
Okuns's book provides a strong counseling model that practioners can follow. I found her exercises and examples particularly helpful and seemingly useful. However, her model is based on anaffective,western;client-centered model. Many of the techniques suggestedwould be difficult to apply to clients of diverse populations. If youdecide to buy this book, consider purchasing her other book, UnderstandingDiverse Families:What Practioners Need to Know. ... very pleased with the quick service. The book was in very good condition

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic text.Full of information, easy to understand.
I was fortunate enough to take my group counseling class from Dr. Corey himself at Cal State Fullerton. The experience of learning from and being coached by Dr. Corey was amazing, and allowed even further insight into this text. The formula of the book is easy to follow.Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself.A must read for anyone training to be a counselor! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams.I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams.I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely.Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this. I feel that the fact that I got an 'A' on the exam says very positive things about the text and its ability to prepare you for the testing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read textbook detailnig the counseling process
Hackney & Cormier offer a simple stage presentation of counseling that explains the process to readers in a revealing way. Each stage is detailed, and various intervention genres are explored. At times, howeverthe book does not flow well. The authors do not take enough time to showhow each aspect of counseling ties together.Hackney & Cormier, however, are sensitive -- almost to a fault -- to multicultural issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great at process; tainted at points by political correctness
I've used this as a text for two years to teach the process of counseling at the undergraduate level. It's quite good at setting forth an understandable five-step process of counseling. The taint of politicalcorrectness rears its ugly head at points when the authors tacitly presumethe morality of homosexual unions--but these can instances can be bracketedoff. Most in need of rework is chapter nine on behavioral interventions;undergraduates find it difficult to digest this as written. ... Read more

This book is perfect for anyone working with at-risk children and adolescents. As a child therapist, I found that the activities helped to engage even children who are highly reluctant to engage in therapy. There are a wide variety of activities in the book that range in age from preschool to teenager and address just about every treatment issue you could think of.Most important, the activities are fun for the kids while also being therapeutic.I would highly recommend this book-- it's worth every penny. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some of this stuff just seems so obvious
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Family Therapists
This book explains Bowen's Extended Family Therapy Theory. This is one of the most important family systems theories in the history of family therapy and it is still one of the most widely used theories for working with families.Anyone that is studying family therapy should read this book as it is the seminal work on Bowen Therapy.Essential ideas such as triangling, emotional fusion, and intergenerational transmission are well explained.5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to natural sytems
A rich introduction to Murray Bowen's natural systems theory.Explains relevance of the theory to clinical work with families, couples, and individuals. Also, briefly explores and contrasts the relationship ofBowen theory to sociobiology, evolutionary neurology, and analytic theory. Case illustrations are clear and helpful.Would recommend tosocialworkers, psychologist, biologists, and those interested in a naturalsystems approach to human behavior.Although strong on evaluation anddescriptions concerning emotional processes in human families and groups, there is less attention to therapy techiques.More of a book aboutthinking on relationships, than one of the clinical "how to" kindof presentations that have become standard fare in the family therapyfield.I have read through Dr. Kerr's text several times and have studiedits chapters separately. Each reread reveals additional applications andinsights into the theory.Surely, a book that can grow with you! Dr.Bowen's epilogue is an added jem in which he offers perhaps his lastwritten description of the development of the theory and his belief in therelevance of theory to the future.Personally, the book has influencedboth my private and professional life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good AD/HD Resource
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject.I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD.Eventually I'll finish the book.Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book will be a validating reading experience for any woman who has AD/HD, not to mention those in her family who want to understand her better. The author breaks down the symptoms, perceptions and realities of AD/HD so that the reader can get a clearer picture of what AD/HD is for women and what can be done in order to improve their lives. There are many references included in the book so continued research and reading is made easy.Do not pass this book by - you'll miss out on some VERY important information that will change your life for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
The answer to so many of my questions. For me, as a woman that has just been diagnosed with ADD on my 52nd birthday, this book has been a life saver. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
This book does live up to its name as a "Comprehensive Guide"It addresses nearly every possible counseling issue. In my opinion, however, it is as the previous reviewer noted, "too Integrationist"Rather than build a view of the total person from the Scriptures up, as Jay Adams, Neil Anderson, and others have attempted, this book "integrates" secular pyschology with Christian ideals. For example, one of the primary tenents of secular psychology is that you do not give advice or correct the patient (p567).On the other hand, a Biblical view of sanctification would show that correction from others is part of the growth process.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Founding Father of Modern Christian Counseling
Several names emerged as leaders of the burgeoning Christian counseling movement in the 70s--Jay Adams, Larry Crabb, and Gary Collins among them. Collins was not only a counselor, but a student of Scripture and an entrepreneur. Under his leadership the American Association of Christian Counselors was birthed (with over 50,000 members as of 2005).

Collins has written an excellent that is useful for both the professional (pastor, counselor, church staff, etc.) or layperson. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing
As a grief therapist I am always searching for books that will be helpful in my classes. This book was one I did indeed find valuable. I also use Write from Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal in my group classes and for the children I use After the Tears, A Gentle Guide to Help Children Understand Death.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and instructive
If you liked this book, also try "The Healing Journey Through Grief" by Phil Rich. There is also a Clincian's Guide available. This book is one in a series of self help journaling books designed to helppeople through life issues, and breaks the process into clear cut stageswith information and journaling exercises throughout to help peopleunderstand, write about, and work through their issues and difficulties.Theother books in the series, all by Phil Rich and other co-authors)include abook on journaling for individuals (The Healing Journey) and one onjournaling for couples("The Healing Journey for Couples") andothers ("The Healing Journey Through...") on divorce, menopause, job loss, retirement, and addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book
Worden has written an inclusive, quality handbook, which is an excellent resource for those investigating the nature of grief. The book is useful to the practioner as well as the individual searching for information on grief and it's manifestations. It is a practical handbook in that it provides the reader with information they can use at the time it is needed, to help get through the crisis at hand. Wordens book is complete, without being wordly, is easily used with well defined categories. The handbook covers many different types of grief ranging from normal to complicated grief reactions, grief in children, to the counselors own grief. Practical applications to dealing with these issues in grief, are also provided. The book gives enough background to understand the topic at hand, saving the reader from 'wading' through pages of literature reviews. For those who desire a more extensive discussion, an ample and lenghty bibliography is offered ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to refer back to again and again!
I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book.As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is veryexciting to find a method of working with children that offers practicaland impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you mayalready be doing.I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at theTheraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the TheraplayCertification process.Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particularchild, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model hasgiven me pervade my work.Parents of children that I am using Theraplaywith often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior andattachment to them in a short period of time. One father of aninternationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going tobe able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were takinghim to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physicaltherapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us.Theraplay hasallowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress inother areas of development."5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems.
Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't.Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of thiswork, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I foundmy self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense."Afterreading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from thiswell researched, time-tested work.Reading this book and attending thetraining has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a childtherapist. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst study guides
It is a shame that my copy was not proofread. There are numerous incorrect answers.I had to spend double the time to find all the correct answers. It upsets me that I spent so much money to help me and it created more work for me.I don't think that I will be purchasing another study guide from this publisher in the future. It had the potential to be a great study guide had more attention been taken when it was released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological, psychological, and social factors on growth. This bookwill definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

4-0 out of 5 stars I used this book for my Dev. Psych class
The chapters are long, about 40 pages each, but I found this book to be excellent for examining the development through the lifespan. If you could see my copy, it's underlined all over the place, there's some great material in this book. I am considering having children and will definately refer to this book if and when I do. It basically tells you how to NOT mess up your kids! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for aspiring play therapists!
I was required to read the book for a class I was completing on Play therapy. It was a very easy read, well organized with a good mixture of research and anecdotal information. What makes the book a truly outstanding resource is Dr. Landreth's very candid insight into the practice of play therapy as well as his willingness to share with the reader his very sincere love and respect for children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, engaging introduction to play therapy

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes! This book is awesome!
I learned more about "doing" psychotherapy from this book than all of my other books combined. I used this book often throughout my internship, and I found it very helpful in many ways. The author helps to validate what novice therapists are thinking about and doing and worrying about. The author gives specific examples throughout the book, so that you know how to visualize what he's talking about. If you are into relational work (and I personally believe that all therapy is relational), then this book is for you. Not many books really outline the therapist-client relationship. Most books say, "Focus on process and not content," but then don't explain how to do that or show you what it looks like. This book is paving the way for how to address the "process" in therapy and not just the content. You get tangible, concrete examples of many, many situations that may come up when working with clients.
