I bought this book for my counseling class, and found it mediocre. It was very informative, but gave hardly any examples. I work well with examples, and even though most concepts were easy to understand, some would have been made clearer with a good example of how it applies to a counseling session, clients, etc. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Skip the profanity
A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.
Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Therapist's notebook for children and adolescents
This great book is for the therapist working with children and adolescents, where the therapist can use the material as homework, handouts and activities in therapy. The editors, Catherine Ford Sori, professor of psychology and counseling at Governors State University, Illinois and Lorna L Hecker, professor of marriage and family therapy at Purdue University in Indiana, have together with 36 professionals compiled a very important tool for the therapist.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to coping with bipolar disorder/manic depression
I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found. It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania. It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings. The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and thought provoking
There is something to be said of a person who can go through a horrific journey such as the atrocities of Auschwitz and recall it with such clarity in order to help others. I was completely emotionally overwhelmed by the first half of the book-which is a narrative of what he experienced and fascinated with the next half which is an explanation of logotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the many psychotherapies
This book provides excellent introductions to a variety of psychotherapies, indeed the most popular methods today. There are over 400 different therapies, and as such this book can not cover them all. However, the book does provide adequate detail for an indepth overview of the therapies, and comes highly recommended to beginning students and graduate students alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book gives brief but thorough explanations of the various theories used in clinical practice. This book is dull, at times, but highly useful. A great addition to any knowledge base.

4-0 out of 5 stars The psychotherapy book
I used this book as a student in my psychotherapy course. I never knew there were so many psychotherapeutic approaches. I was amazed. I enjoyed exploring all these schools analyzed so beautifully in this book. I finally got the chance to see what school of psychotherapy was closer to my needs. 1-0 out of 5 stars Unstructured and very disappointing
Reading Waking the Tiger was an extremely frustrating experience, for several reasons. Mr. Levine contradicts himself repeatedly in his writing. On the one hand he repeatedly claims that revisiting painful memories does no good to trauma victims. On the other hand, in the case stories he uses to illustrate his method, the trauma sufferers DO recall their memories, very vividly, as part of their healing. Also, time and again throughout Waking the Tiger, Levine hints at the healing techniques to be revealed to the reader later in the book. But when I reached the end of the book, those appearantly magnificently efficient techniques were still unrevealed - and the only substantial advice to the reader seemed to be to visit a practioner of Mr. Levine's techniques, thereby reducing the book to little more than an advertising poster.
5-0 out of 5 stars waking the tiger
a worthwhile read for those who have or have not experienced trauma in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A framework for understanding trauma
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a mature view of what trauma is and how we heal from it. Peter Levine makes a compelling case that trauma is unique to the human species because our rational brains get in the way of the organism's instinctive physiological responses to life-threatening situations. In a case study near the end of the book, Levine clearly demonstrates his belief that re-exposure to traumatic circumstances as a way to heal must be gradual and at the organism's own pace. Cathartic experiences may be dramatic and lead us to believe we are helping, but in his view this approach risks deepening the traumatic symptoms. This is an excellent book, written in clear, non-clinical language that any non-professional can understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent--Reread it Every Year!
This book will open your eyes and give you tools to figure out conversations you have every day!(I also highly recommend another of her books, _That's Not What I Meant!_ about cross cultural speaking, which includes a chapter about men and women as well.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read, but use caution
Tannen's book is well done and worth the read.However...it is also imbued with a subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, bias toward a perspective which presumes female modes of communication and other activities to be inherently superior to those of males.Of course, this is a patently false presumption. The examples of female communications/activities are almost uniformly praised and those of males are much more likely to be disparaged, either subtly or explicitly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for most people, men or women.
This is a very good book for anyone interested in gender differences, particularly with regard to peer expectations, communication habits and social instincts. The author touches upon a broad range of issues, but she also keeps the narrative flowing, using examples extensively. The end result is a book that is both educational and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a leader in a congregation, you simply have to absorb the concepts in this book
This is a book to be absorbed slowly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read, and Your Ministry Will Never Be the Same
This book has a reputation of revolutionizing the way its readers view congregational life. Based on his experience as a rabbi and marriage and family therapist, the late Ed Friedman gives the most comprehensive and practical understanding of congregations as emotional systems. Conflicts are explained not from a linear standpoint, i.e. "A causes B," but from a systemic perspective where all participants are contributors. Each part of the system is connected to, or has its own effect upon, every other part. This helps to explain why many "issues" that arise within a congregation cannot be settled on the level of content, but must be viewed as representations of how the persons surrounding the issues are participating in the relational system. "Issues" may seem settled, but if the relational system continues to function the same way, the same or other "issues" will reappear later, because they were merely symptomatic of the emotional dynamics among the people involved. This book begins by explaining the major concepts of family systems theory, and applies them to organizational life, leadership, and the leader's family. It is full of examples, which makes these complex ideas easier to grasp. Few books are as insightful and helpful in equipping church leaders to understand congregations. It is the standard in applying family systems theory to congregations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for all persons in positions of leadership
"Generation to Generation" by Edwin Friedman is a groundbreaking book on the dynamics of organizational and religious leadership as seen through the lens of the multi-generational family systems model. In the book, Friedman uses case studies and examples drawn from his own leadership experience and uses them to illustrate how leadership can be understood and transformed by having an awareness of three major systems that directly affect organizational leadership:Read more
