4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy to read, but pretty dry
I have been reading this text for my clinical psych class, and it's really informative. the authors provide a really good overview of everything so you get breadth and depth. The only drawback is the book is pretty dry reading. Some authors have the talent of making the textbook interesting and informative, but this is not one of those textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive textbook in clinical psychology
This textbook can be used as an introduction as its name suggests, and it also can be used as a kind of reference book after you have learned some more stuff in clinical psychology. What is good about this text is that it talks about every aspect of clinical psychology, from assesment, testing, observation, to intervention, and it also talks about sub areas such as child clinical, health psychology, neuropsychology, and forensic psychology. It sites many famous studies in clinical psychology.Good examples and some accounts on history as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Limited
I was disappointed. It does not live up the th promise of its title. If what you want is the medical model for a psychiatry course or to know what a psychiatrist might tell you, this is the book for you.If you want to understand the full scope of treatment, this text is quite limited. The author either does not understand the psychological perspective of mental disorders or does not value it.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense DSM IV based look at psychopathology & treatment
Essential Psychopathology is a no-nonsense, DSM IV based loook at psychopathology and treatment that is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student who needs a cogent look at psychopathology. This book describes the genetics, epidemiology, and psychopharmacology of mental disorders and offers guidelines for treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Psychopathology and Its Treatment
This book is excellant for anyone working or interested in the mental health field. The authors put the DSM-IV materials into practical workings for psychotherapy and case management. They explain the importance of differential diagnosis as they review the various diagnostic criteria. While it could be used as a reference book, I found it most helpful when I read the chapters in sequence. It is a must have! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reader
Easy to read,
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tome on single subjectresearch
I used this book almost exclusively for one of my candidacy exam questions in an applied behaviora analysis doctoral program. I had been a bit sketchy on research methodology and felt I needed to bone up on it, so I asked one of my committee members to consider that as a topic and to give me several references from which to study. She recommended Johnston & Pennypacker's Strategies and Tactics of Behavioral Research (1993), Murray Sidman's classic Tactics of Scientific Research (1960), and this one. I had used both the other texts in a class I had, and I knew them to be readable but dense. I started with this one when I began studying for my exam, and it's really the only one I used. Kazdin's language is clear and reader-friendly, especially useful for me being new to research in general, let alone single subject research. Kazdin uses plenty of illustrations, both verbal and graphic, so his explanations are even further clarified. I don't think I can say enough except that this is a great resource on the subject of single subject design. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toxic Social Structures & The Climate of Trauma
By Dr. Ian Irvine, co-editor The Animist Creating Sanctuary is a powerful piece of writing by an almost extinct professional breed - the psychiatrist/psychologist prepared to examine thebigger picture in regards to the causes of psychic distress in modernWestern societies. The book undoubtably belongs to a long tradition ofhumanistic and Freudian writings on mental illness as produced by modernWestern social structures. The title itself recalls Fromm's book 'The SaneSociety' and I would argue that in many ways Bloom has given us a powerfulupdate on themes covered in that now classic work. One also thinks of worksby Arthur Janov (especially his work on trauma suppression), Alice Miller,De Mauss, Mickel Adzema, Wilhelm Reich (and the Bioenergetic tradition),Stanislav Grofand many others who have appliedFreudian and Humanisticideas to the social arena. In this sense the work is also in a kind ofrefracted dialogue with that great Freudian text Civilisation and itsDiscontents. The picture of modern society - particularly modern Americansociety - painted for us by Bloom is not a pretty one. Sanity and psychichealth is seen as a virtual impossibility in the face of a normalisedclimate of repression and institutionalised trauma creation. The centralobsessions of our consumeristic, violence and money obsessed modern worldare described in terms of a general malaise polluting and undermining thepsychic integrity of individuals and collectives alike. Bloom accuratelydescribes to us a world characterised by institutional harshness, denial(that there even is a crisis!) and outright disinterest in the trulyimportant issues to do with trauma and violence that now shape our collective social psyches. In this climate, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals seem all but unable toact in the best interests of their clients. In this sense, Bloom criticisesthe faceless bureacrats, lawyers and insurance moguls who increasinglyshape and infringe upon the client patient relationship: often forcingpsychiatrists to opt for functionalist alienated treatment regimes overpotentially more humane and effective ones. The insight that society is notso much interested in curing people who have fallen victim to thecollective (in)humanity we call a society, as in making money out of thelater life effects of trauma suppression is a disturbing under-current tothe book. There is a great deal to this book, far more than I could coverin a short review like this. The work is groundbreaking in its mergedsociological and psychological methodology. More importantly, however, itstands as powerful indictmentof the way in which modern societies act toundermine and subtly traumatise large sections of their populations. A mustread.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book I have read this year!
A very moving account of the impact of violence on our lives and what it takes to create an environment where we can recover from our wounds.Dr. Bloom's call for a therapeutic approach to violence stands in stark contrast to popular proposals for meeting violence with more violence. In a violence-traumatized society, Creating Sanctuary belongs at the top of our social agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that is very clearly written.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. This is the most understandable and clearly written text I have ever read relating to the psychology field. There is no "psycho babble" here, folks.Anybody with an eighth grade education should be able to understand what the author is trying to say. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very technically written, but informative.
The book is very informative, but can be quite technical for the non-medical person. Also, with the FDA approval of vagus nerve stimulation for chronic depression, I would recommend a great book about this medical breakthrough procedure: "Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It is written by a patient for patients. Apparently this new therapy has none of the side effects of ECT.
5-0 out of 5 stars No anecdotal information should serve as evidence.
I... that Dr. Abrams is an expert in ECT and his book is well written. However I would argue that the critique on not being "balanced with dissenting voice" has no scientific/logic base.

5-0 out of 5 stars An example of what psychotherapy texts should be.
A multitude of studies and meta-analyses indicate that most, if not all, psychotherapy systems are equivalent in efficacy. This repeated finding suggests that emphasis on research and clinical thinking needs to shift toward what psychotherapies have in common, and how interpersonal processes in the psychotherapeutic relationship contribute to outcome. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Explanation of Alcoholism Neurochemistry and Genetics, Reward Deficiency Syndrome, AlcoholMetabolism , Craving
Alcohol and the Addictive Brain is possibly the best publishedexplanation ofgenetic and neurochemical causes of alcohol dependence, withdrawal and craving. This book explains how genetically susceptible individuals, differ neurochemicallyfrom nonalcoholics, and how alcohol alters dopamine, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and opiate neurotransmitter and neurotransmitter receptor levels.Inherited differences in P300 brainwaves are thoroughly explained. The history of alcohol neurotransmitter research is reported, objectively, with fair consideration given to opposing views. This book is surprisingly readable, considering the complexity of the research it explains.Enkephalinase inhibition treatments, which Blum has refined, are an especially promising possibility for reducing alcohol craving and dependence. The explanation of transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and subsequently to beta carboline, tetrahydroisoquinolines, morphine, codeine and other opiates, remains useful today and helps explain why naltrexone and accupuncture can reduce alcohol craving and consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last a methodologically rigorous study of alcoholism
I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in thebrain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and manytherapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Paynepresent compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurologicaldisorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent supplementary resource
An impressive collaborative effort by Jayne L. Rygh and William C. Sanderson, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a manual for psychologists, offering tools and techniques for treating generalized anxiety disorder. Offering tested and proven cognitive-behavioral interventions, as well as cutting-edge supplementary interventions for those who do not respond well to cognitive-behavioral therapy alone, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder illustrates its techniques with sample doctor-patient conversations, flowcharts, suggested logs and recordkeeping forms for undertaking steps of the therapy, and more. An excellent supplementary resource for brushing up professional techniques to aid those who need help the most, Treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder is recommended for professional and academic library reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is MPD real?
Weell, Dr. Putnam "confirmed" a diagnosis of MPD on me in the '80's through his "brain-wave tests".Many painful years later, I realized the "MPD" had been created by the desire to please a "therapist" who wanted a multiple to rival Truddi Chase.5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL -- GREAT BOOK!
This is a wonderfully written book on MPD. I consider Dr. Putnam and Dr. Ross to be wonderful resources for information (although I do have a bit of disagreement with Dr. Ross on his views about memories). 4-0 out of 5 stars Validating and Helpful

Editorial Review

"I loved my mom very much. I also hated her." The confusion and pain experienced by daughters of alcoholic mothers remains a somewhat taboo subject, but is thoroughly explored in this fascinating and inspiring book by Eleanor Agnew and Sharon Robideaux. The two authors come from entirely different backgrounds: one is the daughter of an educated East Coast professional family; the other, from a family of poverty-stricken, uneducated Southerners. What they have in common is their childhood with alcoholic mothers, their consequent suffering of mental and physical abuse, and their struggle with the need to protect, keep secrets, and survive.Agnew and Robideaux gathered the stories in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have found
As an adult daughter of an alcoholic mother, I have read several ACoA books but never really found anything that spoke to me like My Mama's Waltz did. I was amazed at how many issues stem from growing up with an alcoholic mother. It was so comforting to read others' experiences and know that I'm not crazy and other women are going thru the same things. This book is a gem and I have recommended it to my three sisters and a girlfriend. So far, everyone has loved it as much as I did. If you are an adult daughter of an alcoholic mother you have to read this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing words
I have not even finished this book yet, but already I feel like I'm healing. My mother was an alcoholic (now dry), her mother was an alcoholic, and I used to drink heavily myself. It's shedding light on some of my tendencies (trying to bend over backwards to please everyone, feeling abandoned by my mom at times, and so on). It also explains to me some of her behaviors and why she has anger lingering in her life and how it affects her still. Very insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My mother was not an alcoholic, but her mother was. I helped me to understand my mother so much better and how being raised by an alcoholic effected her life. As a person in recovery 7 yrs and now a mom, this book solidified my sobriety to see what a burden an alcoholic mother can be to a child. Thank You. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible description of the mind's functioning
As I start this review, I want to say that I'm not a mental health professional. I'd been so used to psychological texts falling into 2 distinct categories: texts written by MD's explaining how everything wrong with you involves an excess of seratonin (or some other chemical) or books written by clinicians talking essentially only about their personal clinical experiences. This book breaks (or combines maybe..?) these stereotypes in a readable, detailed, and very well-supported (~500 references) account of how experiences actually create biological malfunctions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellect perspective...
This is a uniquely important book! Maybe those who so vividly expressed their disappointent in their reviews, misunderstood the title! The book is about DEVELOPING MIND, which means about how certain class of brain processes we call 'mind' come into being as the brain rewires itself.1-0 out of 5 stars Caution
