2-0 out of 5 stars These are student theses....
I was disappointed by this book for several reasons. First, it is not well-organized in terms of content. Second, the references are mostly to student theses which are difficult to obtain for more information. In fact, the author has apparently not really written this book, she has merely strung together many other's works to make a long, tedious book. The problem is the works referred to are not from advanced professionals, but students or those just out of school. This makes for weak content and mostly repetition of basic material throughout.2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing content
This author is an excellent writer, but unfortunately this latest book does not live up to previous volumes. The content was extremely disappointing and read like a series of student papers strung together to make a book. The text could have benefited from editing, it is laborious to read and certainly is not for those new to this field, they will find it confusing and dense. The topics are innovative, there is no argument about that and the illustrations are interesting. As a psychotherapist I was left wanting something more clear, to the point, and less laden with lengthy cases. Art Psychotherapy by this author still remains her best and classic text, I would recommend that readers interested in this field purchase that one and skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, practical & easy to read
Perlis and collaborators put together a succinct and practical book on CBT for insomnia. The book is aimed for clinicians, researchers and sleep behavioral therapists. This beautiful hardcover edition begins with defining insomnia and explaining the conceptual framework of CBT treatment. Then, step by step, the author explains how to perform 8-sessions of behavioral therapy. Each concept is reinforced by a sample dialogue; it is like having a coach next to the reader. Troubleshooting frequently encountered problems such as non-adherence is also explained. Then a sample case, session by session. To finalize, the appendices have useful clinical tools. All of these qualities make this book a must for sleep medicine fellows, or clinicians interested in CBT for insomnia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Bible for Evidenced Based Therapy
Nathan and Gorman have provided mental health practitioners with an essential reference. No practitioner of psychotherapy or psychiatric chemotherapy can afford not to buy this book (purchase price notwithstanding). This compendium reviews treatments for major psychological disorders and offers effect size estimates for the benefits of treatment (i.e., how much better off are people after treatment than if they got no treatment at all).In addition, the authors summarize the quality of the research on which their reviews are based. They not only examine psychologically based treatments, but also medication treatments for some disorders. All practitioners and consumers should read this.As a faculty member in a clinical psychology graduate training program, I recommended this book to my students as optional reading - and almost all of them bought it because they found it invaluable.I hope this authors will choose to update this book every ten years ago (it is very recent, so it needs no updating now).If they do, I have no doubt that Nathan and Gorman will come to be inextricably associated with this monumentally practical work, the way that Gray is associated with Anatomy.Kudos to the authors for giving us this essential reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of all those confusing opinions about your love life?
Sharon S. Brehm is a respected social psychologist who has composed a witty, fun, and insightful tome regarding the many fascinating contributions her field has made to the study of love relationships. Popular press books may or may not offer valid advice--they aren't relyingon scientific research, but rather on opinions (which often conflict withthe opinions found in still other books).Brehm offers her readersinformation that is reliable and valid, and perhaps most importantly, useful.Better still, her book is equally applicable for men and women. As a psychology professor and a consultant for individuals seeking theirlife mate, I read and use many books--texts and popular press--on thisissue.Brehm's book is among my most trusted resources, and it givesreaders the best of all worlds: excellent and engaging writing that iseasily understood, information that is eminently useful, and solid researchevidence rather than opinion alone.Should you live together?Doesmarriage really make people happier than if they had remained single?Whatattracts romantic partners? If you want "just the facts," thisis the place to go for them.(If you want opinion-type popular-press booksthat support "the facts" and thus really do give good advice, Ihighly recommend"If I'm So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single?"by Susan Page, as well as "How to Find the Love of Your Life," byBen Dominitz, "The Rules," by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider[note: "The Rules" are for women only], and "Mars and Venuson a Date," by John Gray.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand your own intimate relationships better!
Confused about your conflicts with your significant other?Do you want to find out why people are attracted to some people but not others?Reading this book for my sociology class in college allowed me to better comprehend my own relationships. The book collects together social psychological research on intimate relationships, discussing such topics as attraction, sexuality, power, conflict, loneliness, and relationship development.Unlike other non-scholarly books written about relationships, this text is based on studies published by psychologists.Their conclusions can help you better understand your own relationships, but of course each individual person may differ from what sociologists generally conclude about human beings.Even though this book was written for psychology courses, the text is not too difficult to understand. This book is extremely interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has been, wants to be, or is currently in a relationship - which is, basically, everyone ...
