5-0 out of 5 stars Thankyou Dr. Simeon
I thought I was the only one.I was amazed at how informative this book is.One of the personal accounts is almost identical to my own.I never knew it had a name until I discovered this book.It has given me renewed hope.I hope this book inspires more research in the field of depersonalization. If you even suspect you may suffer from this, read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
An enlightening book on a subject that has needed Illumination. This book covers the many forms and facets of DPD as well as the many ways it has been described, defined and managed. It covers therapies and medicines that have helped and those that have not. The case studies are fascinating and show just how varied this disorder manifests itself. It is so well written that it seemed every question and skeptic querie that came to mind regarding the cases were anticipated by the authors and answered by the end of the chapers. An easy read on a tough subject!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for this book my entire life!
I first experienced depersonalization and derealization around age 4 or 5. It wasn't frightening then; it was simply a "game of existential thinking" I had control of. But as the years progressed it became a debilitating altered state of consciousness that took over my life. I have had both symptoms "DP" and "DR" -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even in my dreams -- for over thirty years. This altered state has stolen my goals and dreams; it has severely affected my social and occupational pursuits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Narcissism revealed
This book clarifies the nature of personality disorders. I was researching narcissim for my Master's in Counseling program. Some of the terminology and concepts wer difficult to understand, but the overal picture is crystal clear. This book should be mandatory reading for all therapists. It is the most comprehensive work in modern times on the nature and range of personality styles. I wonder what the author is doing now?

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shift
This book was the only text used in my graduate Psychopathology class.Five years later I have gone back again and again for use in my practice.Johnson brilliantly integrates most of the psychodynamic schools of thought to construct a "characterological-developmental" model of motivation, personality development, and treatment of psychopathology. He delineates components of character in terms of etiology, symptoms, cognitive styles, defenses, pathogenic beliefs, self and object representations, and affective characteristics. In addition he outlines treatment goals and objectives for each character in cognitive, affective, and behavioral areas.Johnson manages to bring psychoanalytic terminology down to earth and put it in existential terms (e.g. The Hated Child, The Used Child, etc).
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure
I will never part with this book. It's an eye-opener like no other book on human nature that I know of.I wish I read this book when I was younger; it would make my life a whole lot better.I also would've been a better parent. This book should be mandatory reading for every couple that's expecting a child -- but also the adult children with charcterological problems.

Editorial Review

Why don't zebras get ulcers--or heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases--when people do? In a fascinating look at the science of stress, biologist Robert Sapolsky presents an intriguing case, that people develop such diseases partly because our bodies aren't designed for the constant stresses of a modern-day life--like sitting in daily traffic jams or growing up in poverty. Rather, they seem more built for the kind of short-term stress faced by a zebra--like outrunning a lion.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Stress
This is an extraordinarily well-written book about stress. The information contained is quite technical, but the author does a superb job of illustrating these technical concepts with everyday things the average person can understand.Garden hoses, toilets, the banking system and, of course, zebras, are all employed at one point or another to explain the physiology of stress. There are not really any practical ideas here for managing stress; the focus is more on how stress affects the various systems of the body. You will, however, have an amazing understanding of all of these intricate mechanisms by the end of the book!Copious end notes flesh out some concepts which are over-simplified in the main text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, Entertaining, and Important

5-0 out of 5 stars Sapolsky is the best!
I had the wonderful opportunity to take a couple of Dr. Sapolsky's classes at Stanford U., where he never failed to make people bust a gut. Not only is this book a good introduction to the fascinating world of stress, it is simply an enjoyable read. It will definitely help to improve your lifestyle and your health. A must buy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info on one aspect of bipolar treatment
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too.The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellentinsight into the damaging abuse process
This is a landmark book, many papers written based upon this book are now famous. For those well read in child abuse psychopathology, this book explains how and to what extent the damage is done to children of abuse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
Although deeply literate, thought provoking, and full of interesting and penetrating observations, formulations, and interpretations, I recommend this book only to those who already well-read in the area of childhood trauma.5-0 out of 5 stars a map of the badlands
I've read this book several times, and find it very useful to understand and to undo the effects of trauma. Shengold speaks to me personally as the one-time member of an abusive family, and professionally as a psychoanalyst who works with people who have been abused. This book is painful to read attimes, and is probably better read in small sections at a time, so that itcan be felt and digested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I purchased this book for a psychology class and I found it easy to read and easy to implement the suggestions offered within the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical methodology
this book is very well-organized and easy to read. it is comprehensive and thoroughly addresses all the possible components to an intake interview that one could imagine! sections of particular interest to me were how to address sensitive subjects and how to get patients to get in touch with feelings (people are often too much in their heads), mental status exam aspects, signs and symptoms, and dealing with difficult patients (lying, hostility, etc.). also useful was information on presenting findings once all the data gathering is done. great resource for students just getting started in the field of behavioral health, as well as medical students assessing potential psychological aspects to a patient's presentation and the need for a referral to a behavioral health practitioner. also helpful when creating documents, such as during the transition to private practice or an administrative position responsible for organization of information/compliance with professional evaluation standards, especially with increasing pressure from accrediting agencies....in other words, a great resource for ALL clinicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars Written by a great academic teacher
A wonderful book! I have an MA in Psychology (and a PhD in an unrelated field) and have been working in emergency psychiatric evaluations for two years now. This is the one most helpful book that I have found on the question: How do I talk to a person for one hour and know what's going on with them psychiatrically?

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest
An excellent book for those looking to learn more about trauma and its relationship to attachment.James does a wonderful job of laying a foundation of understanding, and expanding it to helpful techniques for both parents and professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting RAD
Beverly provides helpful methods for parenting and understanding Reactive Attachment disordered children. Her suggestions often work.Parents and therapists who use this approach need to be very patient and understanding and focus on positive interaction with the child. Some Reactive Attachment Disordered children are very difficult and sometimes violent.Means of managing the chronic disturbing behavior and the violence are essential. This book is only partially helpful in this regard. If you have a very difficult child and are feeling desperate for help, this book is not for you.Beverly spends much of her energy in the book panning holding therapy and trying to prove that it promotes trauma bonds which she is never able to prove.Trauma bonds are temporary and tenuous.Further, Beverly is convinced that all holding therapy is abusive which is also a claim she does not prove. Many parents find non-intrusive holding therapy helpful. The book is a good one if you can ignore Beverly's agenda against holding therapies and the `prisoner of war' arguments she promotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps on ticking...............
I bought and read this book many years ago and found it very helpful. I read it again a few weeks ago and was again able to appreciate it's value. Aside from the dated research, and some of the debate regarding the use of anti-depressants, it remains as fresh and powerful and relevant today as it was when it was published. It is definitely a giant step in taking the mystery out of depression and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about the nature and treatment of this illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
treating depression with cognitive therapy is often the way to go because it can assume a simple, practical format that can motivate patients to take one step at a time. depressed patients frequently feel lost and hopeless, and the directive approach that cognitive therapy takes can bring hope. this book offers many ideas for working with depressed patients in an organized, well-written format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arguing them out of it.
Many depressed people have a negative self-image and are always expecting something bad to happen. Beck's theory is that this is the cause, rather than a result, of depression. The depressed make "depressogenic assumptions" and have to be shown that these are false. It sounds as if zealous Beckian therapists must spend a lot of time arguing with their patients. Read more

This is an extremely well written and thorough resource for psychological professionals, management consultants and executive coaches. For psychologists, it helps you decide if EC is right for you.For others, it helps to understand what about psychology is needed to successfully provide EC.There are two basic assumptions outlined in the book which are believed by many to be limiting:One, that executive coaching is primarily a psychological service; and Two, that executive coaching is solely for the purpose of developing leaders.Executive coaching is more complex than just a psychological service. It entails the application of the principles and methods of psychology, business management, leadership, and organization development, among others, to help the executive or would-be executive improve his/her effectivness.Second, executive coaching must be provided with the greater goals of the organization at an equal level of priority to the developmental goals of the individual leader.5-0 out of 5 stars Superb guidebook for any therapist
When I was in graduate school one of my professors quoted Kurt Lewin by saying, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory."This is an apt comment in reference to Dr Peltier's new book, The Psychology of Executive Coaching: Theory and Application.Except I might expand on that to say there is nothing as practical as a number of good theories.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Consultants from All Fields
I can't stop reading this book. I'm an employee relations consultant with a prestigious consulting firm and am frequently called upon to coach executives, managers, and employees eitherformally or informally. Before reading this book, my all-time favorite was "Co-active Coaching,"but now I find this book to be as important a resource.I'm thinking of including it as required reading in a masters level course I teach on human capital issues.Read more
