5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy reading
I'm currently in school for addiction counseling and felt this book would be good to read. It is well written and easy to read, with a lot of good advice. As a counselor in preparation I know I will be having sessions with people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, & while I know this doesn't qualify a person to do suicide assessments it certainly gives a good method for drawing out as much information as possible. It makes me feel a little more comfortable about the job I am going to be doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Text of Suicide Assessment
There are many books on suicidology and even on clinical interviewing, but none combine the two topics in such an effective and practical manner.5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL "Must-Read" for All Clinicians
Shawn Shea's The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and Substance Abuse Counselors is one of the most valuable professional texts I have read in the past decade. The bookcombines scholarship, practical guidelines and a literary quality thatrenders it a truly exceptional book in the field.I found the caseexamples used to illustrate clinical problems invaluable; these vignettesbring the theoretical material "alive" in a way that encouragesclinicians from various disciplines and theoretical orientations tomeaningfully incorporate the concepts.Shea elucidates such criticalissues as risk factors and risk predictors in such a way as to makeconstructs that are often reifed once again meaningful. As part of myprofessional responsibilities, I am responsible for training/teachingmental health emergency clinicians aspects of clinical interviewing andsuicide assessment.I have incorporated many of the principles in thisbook into these trainings. The CASE approach to suicidal assessment isperhaps the best approach to this complex task that I have found. Thediscussion on "contracting for safety/no suicide contracts" isrelevant, congruent with current ethical and legal principles, and reflectsthe difficult reality of working with suicidal patients. I regularlyrecommend both this book and Shea's book on psychiatric interviewing toparticipants in the workshops.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book for both patients and professionals
"You'll just have to learn to live with it." That's what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to "live with it?" Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn's book begins. Dr. Thorn's book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.

1-0 out of 5 stars There Goes the Boat
This guy completely missed it.He attempted to relate/equate self-mutilation to/with many unrelated cultural practices. If you are looking for a book about self-mutilation that has any insight about this multifaceted and deeply emotionally complex concept, this is not it.I read it when it first came out.The author was a doctor at UMC where I earned three degrees, including a Master's in Counseling Psychology.I met with this man, a dangerous cutter myself at the time, and his presentation was as judgemental, cold and clueless as his book. What a sad disappointment when simple hope was needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive book (essential for those who self-injure)
I've been cutting myself for many years, and have read books on the subject for a number of those years. This is by far one of the best I've read for Favazza does an extremely deep study into the history of self-injury, both cultural forms and what he terms "deviant" forms. While not as entertaining as "A Bright Red Scream," and definately more scholarly than most books on the subject, I still consider it essential for those who cut or the loved ones of those who cut. However, it isn't so much a personal or supportive book, and will mostly trigger more cutters than it will help. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five though is because of some of the misconceptions that even the author shows, such as relating self-injury to body piercing and such (which he has already gotten some heat about already.) I also don't like the terms "mentally ill," "wrist slashers," " slicers," etc. as words for those who cut. I also found the first few pages of chapter 11 very hard to read for similar reasons.

1-0 out of 5 stars Armando has lost his mind

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly clinically relevant
As a 2nd year psychiatry resident, I only recently discovered this text, however, am finding it incredibly helpful in understanding my patients.Although there are currently no plans for an updated edition (per the publisher as of November 2005), the material is still very relevant as far as the developmental effects of traumatic stress.I would highly recommend this to anyone who works with patients with PTSD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Intl field work with trauma
I recently worked with Kosovar refugees in Montenegro during the war in Kosovo and found this book to be invaluable in my efforts to determine what has been shown to work in the field and how to conceptualize the staging ofinterventions needed within a cultural context.I highly recommend thisbook to anyone working with trauma that results from ethno-politicalwarfare.

4-0 out of 5 stars State of the art in Traumatic sSress
Van der Kolk, McFarlane and Weisarth are world leaders on the nature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).In this volume they bring together a wide range of authors to present the historical development of and current approaches to the treatment of the ongoing effects of traumatic experience. There are 25 chapters which address thehistorical developments, acute reactions to and adaptation to trauma, the mechanisms of memory, social and cultural issues and, most importantly, treatment. Recent developments in treatment are critically reviewed, including reference to the popular Eye Movement Desensitisation, but Thought Field Therapy is too new to be included. This is not a book for those looking for `quick fix' solutions or a `how to' manual for the treatment of trauma. Rather it provides serious theoretical and research perspectives that might underpin professional practice. In this sense it is a fair representation of the state of knowledge on PTSD, a concept which provides a window for viewing and treating the effects of exposure to trauma. Having explored the current state of clinical knowledge however, the editors acknowledge that there are `aspects of the experience of trauma that cannot be captured in medical and scientific models' and argue that `in reality people are left to grapple with the human dimensions of traumatic experience'.They conclude that `beneath the tidiness of emotional distancing and scientific classification lie the human vitality and energy to struggle against, and to create meaning out of, what appears to be random cruelty and fate'.The reader is left to ponder what the role of the researcher and clinician is in challenging the conditions and social contexts of the tragedy and violence that we observe daily in our world. If there is any criticism, the text could perhaps have been grounded in more case presentations that would allow the reader an insight into the complex process of grappling with and unravelling the experience of trauma and its consequences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Movies and Mental Illness: Using Films to Understand Psychotherapy
A really fine layman's guide to several prominent mental illnesses where specific films accurately portray manifestations of and reactions to those illnesses. It is now much more enjoyable to watch those films again with a better understanding of what the characters are attempting to portray. Highly recommended to any movie viewer who would like to know more about specific mental illnesses, but aren't able to attend psychiatric Grand Rounds as a physician.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for practitioners of cognitive behavioral therapy
This is one of those books that I regret not having when I was beginning with cognitive behavioral therapy. The authors synthesize all the crucial information to help therapists make CBT work. Readers will dramatically increase their comfort, confidence, and outcomes with delivering CBT. I used this book with graduate students I supervised and they loved it!
