This book is chock full of ideas and tools for clinicians doing group therapy for addictions.Lessons can be used as is or adapted to current curriculum. My only criticism is I wish the book had a spiral binding so copies could be made easily without grey shadows on the edge.Other than that, it is worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding treatment manual
Alan Kazdin is one of the preeminent child psychologists and a superb writer. His manuals are always top-notch, and "Parent Management Training" is another terrific book.Written for mental health professionals, the book outlines in detail parent management training (PMT), a behavior-based treatment developed for parents of children with conduct problems. The treatment has been shown to work in numerous studies, as detailed by Kazdin. In fact, PMT is one of the most thoroughly investigated child treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Resource
I'm starting my senior year of undergrad and I've been making huge efforts to try to find a grad school program with a professor with similar research interests. Thus far, it's been very labor-intensive.However, I just bought this guide and it's incredibly helpful. Not only does it go through the process of how to apply, have a successful interview, etc, but it also breaks down schools by program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but same as previous edition
Yep, I wasted $15 on this. If you haven't got a previous edition, then this is an OUTSTANDING resource for those interested in pursuing clinical psyc in grad school. If you do have a previous edition, do not buy - especially if you have the 2004-2005 edition. There is nothing substantially different as far as I can tell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the art
Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy
A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few areas useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy andStephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship anddistilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, andpsychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure.I am agreat admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort hasexceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is acompendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes aprofound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, andthose who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is alsolikely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapycourses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residencyprograms. Among the particular glories of this excellent book arethat the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of theart" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailedtreatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients andtherapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, andmedication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge aboutdisorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two mastercognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value toclinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, thebook by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitivepractitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced andnovice therapists can find helpful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your whole family should read this book
A person like this ruined my life, my nephew's life and my child.I ended up seeing a psychiatrist as part of my recovery after the incident and she recommended this book.I wish I had read it before I met the psychopath and I would never have been drawn into his manipulations and deceptions. These people are out there among us and you probably already know at least one.The only way to protect yourself from them is to know what to look for.My psychiatrist promised me that once I read this book, I would never again fall victim to these people. She was right; I have since been able to identify them and avoid them.I recently lent this book to my neighbor whose teenage daughter was deceived by a teenage psychopath and who was beeing ruthlessly lied to, manipulated, stalked and harassed by him.Read this book and share it with everyone in your family. It has been a blessing to me and mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is Anything Being Done?
Like many people, I have a person in my social circle who manifests most, if not all, of the symptoms described in this book.Deceitful and manipulative, lack of empathy, irresponsible, impulsive, need for excitement, etc.Dr. Hare says that there is no evidence that there is a cause/effect relationship between early childhood experiences and psychopathy. However, it concerns me that he frequently equates good parenting with a stable, professional household.Abuse can and does occur in well-to-do homes.Poor families can and do provide loving homes. I have known my syptomatic person since birth. She was unwanted, unloved, emotionally abused, and probably also physically abused (thought I never witnessed the latter). The feedback she got from her mother was not related to her behavior.Once I asked her why she lies habitually. She said that she thought it was probably due to the fact that from the time she was a small child, she never knew what would throw her mother into a rage, so she never told the truth until she could drop a few lies to get clues as to what might be acceptable. The sad thing is that she has a new baby, is living in a room at a stinking flophouse at the beach, looking for a man to hook up with.Watch out, guys!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome view of someone you know...
After reading this book made me realize what I suspected for a long time. A close family member appears to be a psychopath. After many years of struggling with this person, this book has opened my eyes to see that by adulthood, many psychpaths do not change. Thanks to this book I have taken a drastic decision to walk away from my situation/ relationship with the suspected psychopath. The checklist matched line per line with this individual. Even some quotes in the book rang very similarly to what my family member has said in the past. Chilling but very liberating facts. I highly recommend this book to any one because in our lifetime we all have encountered a psychopath. With varying degrees of the condition. Not necessarily a serial killer, but maybe somenoe who manupulates, lies, cheats, steals, and is abusive. All for personal gain and "Without Conscience". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching aid for clinical psychology students
Great way to see how the DSM-IV criteria apply to real cases. Beware, this is the exact same (with exception to the references to the DSM-IV-TR page numbers) as the 1994 DSM-IV Casebook. So, if you already own the older version, don't bother wasting your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bathroom Book
This is a great book with real-life case vignettes illustrating presentations of most of the diagnoses in DSM-IV-TR. Though initially skeptical, given the contrived case names, the book is excellent. Each case is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV diagnostic issues raised. An especially neat part of the book is a presentation of historic cases from Blueler, Freud, and others, as well as international cases. Each case is self-contained so the book can be read in a three minute sitting.
5-0 out of 5 stars informative and actually somewhat fun
I found this book to provide excellent supplemental info to the "DSM-IV-TR" itself. Written case studies, though no substitute for living, breathing subjects, actually provide a good deal of help in learning to apply the diagnoses in the "DSM-IV-TR". Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to properly apply these diagnoses or learn more about psychiatry in general. I found it actually kind of fun.Avery Z. 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, again and again...
I am a clinical psychology graduate student, and every time I turn to this book for help related to interpretation--what a part of the test means or can tell us about a person--I am sorely disappointed. It is terribly psychometric and formal, giving facts about the test but few clues for what to do with it; even something as simple as a useful description of one of the index scores is lacking. There are reference tables included, but I have found even those more difficult to locate when I need them than seems necessary.Frustrating...

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and user-friendly yet sophisticated
This is a gem of a book. I assigned it for the grad students in my intellectual assessment course and both they and I found it to be very helpful and easy to use. The format of the book makes it very user-friendly and unintimidating. There are a lot of boxes and highlighted text that help the reader to find what he or she is looking for quickly. This book covers administration, scoring, and interpretation and provides numerous helpful tips for beginners on common errors. The approach to interpretation provided in this book is a pared-down and slightly modified version of the method described in Kaufman's book Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III (an excellent book with a great deal of information on interpreting the WISC-III). Kaufman and Lichtenberger take the guess work and estimation out of interpreting the significance of various scores. This approach is based in the scientific method (assume nonsignificance unless you have a compelling reason, based on the test data, to believe that the variations in scores on the test protocol are unlikely to have resulted by chance). This approach is very helpful in giving students an understanding of how much variation in test scores can result from test error, and brings the "science" back into test interpretation. There are a lot of numbers to crunch using this method, and in some ways the clarity of the system can encourage users to become mechanistic, but I feel that the emphasis on systematic and defensible interpretation is well worth this risk. Kaufman's approach has become the basis of the standard described in the WAIS manual and calculated on the WAIS-III record form, and this book is an excellent way to learn it and the rationale behind it. The book is also an excellent reference for practitioners. I find myself pulling it off my shelf very frequently as I supervise student assessments, and it's loaned out to various students a lot of the time. The book provides pages of useful tables, some of which are in the WAIS-III manual, but many of which are not. One caution is that the shared abilities tables provided here are based on theory rather than data, so it's important to take these with a grain of salt. Also there are a couple of points in the "decision tree" where it's not entirely clear in some situations what the reader is to do. This is not a common problem, but one that is not really adequately addressed in my opinion.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I am a graduate student in psychology and this is the clearest text I have ever read that describes the interpretive process of IQ tests! Look for their new book for WISC interpretation as well! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A recipe for living powerfully
this book is a tremendous resource for coaches, consultants and other people professionals. And it can be assigned to the clients they work with. HMMM 52 lessons, 52 weeks in a year...Sounds like a weekly program that can keep clients humming.
2-0 out of 5 stars Content did not live up to its introduction
Unfortunately I purchased 7 copies of this book for a coaching program I was doing before I had read it.The cover information and introduction were intriguing. However, I found the content thin and failing to deliver on the promises laid out in the introduction of the book as well as the introduction of each chapter.I liked ideas that they told me they would tell me about; the authors delivered thin regurgitated material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this while studying for licensure!
I purchased this book while studying for my national and state licensing exams. As many other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent resource. Reading this book in between session provided me with a healthy break from the rigours of studying, while orienting me to thinking about the procedures and forms I needed to be developing for my practice once licensed. There is a wealth of information that could be a bit overwhelming as you are glowing over your new shiny license number and wondering what you need to do to get your clients into your practice. Using the strategy of tackling a form a day was also very helpful for me. This book will go a long way to helping you create a sound set of ethical and effective business practices that was probably not covered at all in your graduate training.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions to this disorder and how it is treated
This is one of the best introductions to borderline personality that I know of. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining how the disease works in layman's terms. It also illustrates all the important aspects with excellent short examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I read this book and I saw myself. If you suspect that you're a little flipped, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Approachable and Engaging
I've read more academic books (and think those are important, too. For that, I recommend "Demystifying Borderline Personality Disorder"), but this one was accessible and engaging, and had useful and practical advice for people with the illness and those around them. Because of that, the book gives the reader a sense of hope. In this field, that can be rare. There is some sexual content, and I can understand why some people would find that offensive. I personally didn't. Any misgivings I have about the book are offset by my enthusiasm about its readability and its usefulness to the people for whom it is written: borderlines and their families. ... Read more

This is a great book. It would work for anyone with bipolar, no matter what stage of your treatment your in. It really gave me a different perspective to my illness. I found out about my illness 4 years ago and this book still helped me to learn a lot of things that I had never thought of before. I was really great.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I had been looking for a guide/workbook for this. Most books don't cover exercises in depth to help and the few guides I have found, frankly were written so poorly they were of no use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book...to study & to refer to...
I used this text in my freshman PSYC studies & thoroughly enjoyed it! It's a great jumping off point for a broad scope of the basic PSYC concepts in assessing the human personality (on individual scales, cultural scales, attachment scales, etc.). I enjoyed the text so much that I decided to keep it for reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable study text
I really enjoyed this book, that I bought as a text book for my Theories of Personality Master Degree course. It is a University level text that explores many of the psychological theories and the lives of the men and women that created them, with a focus on the twentieth century and american psychology.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing book I've ever read
This book touched me where no book has ever donw before... it changed my life and i think everyone should read it, because it applies to everyone with problems. What none of us realize is that borderline personality disorder is a much more common problem that any of us percieve it to be. Borderline Personality Disorder is just a name for a much deeper issue dealing with one's childhood that causes them to act the way they are. This is your neighbor that screams at her kids, this is your mailman who hates his job, this is you parents that you fail to understand, this is you and almost everyone around you. Everyone needs to read this book, once again, I'll repeat, it changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
While reading this book, I realized that I had experienced so many of the same things the author experienced. After 8 years of therapy, I realized along with my diagnosis of PTSD, I also suffer from BPD."Get Me Out Of Here" helped me face some of my own issues and has helped me open up new dialogue with my therapist so that I can heal too.I encourage anyone who suffers from BPD to read this book.I am on the road to recovery and consider this book to be a turning point in my own recovery.Thank you, Rachel Reiland, for your honesty and willingness to share your experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for mental healthcare counselors
Okay, I did not know what to expect when purchasing this book, but I was intrigued by the synopsis. As a Board Certified Member in Expert Stress (BCETS)and a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) actively involved in treating veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, I suggest this should be required reading for EVERYONE in and considering on entering into the mental healthcare profession. Rachel eloquently elaborates on, not only what it is like to live with BPD, but describes the epitome of professionalism in counseling -- transference, boundaries, self-disclosure, and counseling metodology. I wish that I had read this book early in my journey in counseling. It is directly applicable, not only to BPD, but as dissociative identity disorder (DID) and other DSM-IV-TR disorders resulting from trauma in which transference is an issue. A 5-star rating is an understatement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock Concepts for the Millennial Therapist
Beck's and Freeman's marriage of value and belief systems to personality theory was nothing less than a watershed back in 1990. Kernberg, Millon, Hare, Linehan, Shapiro and other personality theorists of the period were already moving in the direction of what became Millon's "personality-guided synergistic therapy." But this book gave substance to what has become the dominant set of front-line therapeutic tools in use at this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text. ... Read more
