5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Chu
Although I haven't read this book yet I want to add that I had a brief session with Dr. Chu this month and was impressed with his compassion and sensitivity. He was warm and friendly and very clearly did what he could to help me feel comfortable in such an uncomfortable situtation. He serves as a consultant to the program I was in and that's how I was able to meet with him.And I am very glad that he was able to give his input to my treatmant team.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for therapists and patients
I thought the book was rather comprehensive, but I noticed about one page on ritual abuse including satanic ritual abuse. That, and the fact that his program only caters to females are my main objections. I also agree with one of the other reviewers about the author who has no compassion yet writes a book seemingly with compassion. I know this due to inquiring about his program twice. He is now an administrator who no longer does direct therapy and that is perhaps the main reason he wrote his book (for promotion and pay).

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and concise synthesis
After seeing Dr. James Chu on video, and being- for the most part- impressed with his sensitive and astute nature, I decided to read his book.Any therapist or psychiatrist, especially those who are beginning to work with clients who have trauma histories, as well as any client who can meaningfully make use of insights (sometimes difficult ones) can find value in Dr. Chu's careful and detailed work. This is a rather simplistic summary: Dr. Chu covers the structure of treatment, boundaries, session frequency, managing the disempowered client, as well as the many presentations and complexities of dissociative disorders and post traumatic behaviors such as transference, self inflicted violence, regression, and intolerable internal conflict- among others. Bringing his work to full vividness are the relevant clinical case examples liberally included. With great skill, Dr. Chu adeptly discusses cases that may appear to be dissociative disorders but, in fact, are not.Dr. Chu's engaging and accessible writing style and attention to the many complexities and nuances of the dynamics of treatment are extremely helpful, especially in the context of current societal black and white thinking. A brilliant crystallization of the issues surrounding the validity of memory is included in the book.Dr. Chu covers recent neurological evidence as well as implicit and explicit memory. He advises caution, although certainly not abdication of the responsibility to be compassionate and supportive. In addition, there is extensive attention paid throughout the book to reenactment of trauma and the various ways reenactment presents itself. Ultimately, Dr. Chu's book contains a quality synthesis of the current understandings of dissociative disorders and indicated treatments- cutting edge. His perspective is resonant with the true meaning and experiences of dissociation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Update is in progress
To any who may read the review below about updating this volume, I would like to announce, as an author of this book, that the second edition is already in progress and will contain all of the new versions of the major cognitive batteries as well as the most current principles of cross-battery assessment. The new volume is not a simple revision but more an evolution of the approach. Although some of the information in the current volume is definitely outdated, the basic ideas, principles, and approach remains as viable today as before. According to Wiley's website, the book is due out in March of 2006.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date and out of use
The material this book was written on is considerably out of date and not useful to professionals at this time.I would hope the authors would update their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Teaching Assistant
I supervise and teach psychological assessment and use this book to help students learn how to integrate different psychological tests in their reports. The worksheets provide useful guidelines for integrating data.Overall this reference helps one create reports that are useful and appropriate for both teachers and parents, as well as physicians an therapists. Jerome Sattler's Assessment of Children books are probably the backbone of my work, but this little paperback is handy when a quick overview is all that's needed or I want to present material to individuals who do not have a theoretical background in assessment and psychometry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous (and anxiety producing) topics for study groups!
The variety of sensitive issues that psychotherapists must deal with are addressed in this stimulating book.In a respectful context, the authors challenge us to address a variety of topics that are almost never discussed in training, supervision, or consultation study groups among psychotherapists. This reading provides a wealth of topics and guidelines for thinking through issues such as, what to do during a psychotherapy session when we feel distracted, annoyed, drowsy or sexually aroused? What to do when personal values differ significantly from those of our clients/patients? Many more interesting taboo topics are addressed!I am recommending that my feminist therapy study group read this book for discussion!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Pope, for courageously writing about taboos in therapy!
In graduate training, we are trained to follow ethical principles, but discussions are limited. Students and professors seem afraid to openly discuss the taboo topics, like therapist feelings of fear, anger, hatred, and sexual attraction. This book provides the context for open, respectful, and insightful discussions in graduate-level ethics courses. Thank you, Dr. Pope!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Practitioners, Students, and Curious Consumers
This is the MOST PRACTICAL book on boundaries and ethics I have read in any language. It is an ideal text for professional training programs in psychology or other mental health fields. But it is also something one could use to guide practicing clinicians and/or plan inservice training.Last but not least, for the consumer who is wondering what "the rules are," this is far easier to understand than an ethics code.Nothing available in the professional literature can match this contribution by three widely acknowledged leaders in the field who have provided a virtual cornucopia of useful guidance. They cover many vital things including some rarely discussed. It's worth many times its price. This is the first book I think which could actually be used as a text in a professional training program which is seeking to truly cover the realities of the practice that their students face in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for understanding and treating self-injury
In the first part of this accessible and comprehensive work, Barent does a sterling job of distinguishing the difference between self-injury and body alterations (tattoos, piercing, brands, etc.) and self-injury and suicide.Echoing my own view, he also presents a strong case for steering clear of suicidal language when referring to self-injury, for example, terms such as "attempted suicide," "suicidal gesture," and "parasuicide."
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text For Therapists and Those Seeking Help
There are many self-help paperbacks already published on self-injury that are readable, helpful and under $15. "Treating Self-Injury" is written like a textbook but it is the most organized and comprehensive of all that I have seen. I would recommend it especially for school personnel or therapists who have little experience with "cutters" or those who cope through other forms of self-injury. The text would aid senior clinicians in intergrating various models into a coherent approach for treatment. The author wrote one of the first books that brought self-injury out of the medical closet, "Self-Mutilation: Theory, Research and Treatment" (1988).

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for investigators
For those who don't know the name, Rossmo is the detective / mathematician whose pioneering work on criminal profiling in Canada has helped re-shape the way investigators worldwide track down serial offenders. By mathematically studying the location and distribution of crimes, Rossmo developed a way of pinpointing the most likely location of the offender's home base. This book explains his work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ground breaking and well researched
This book is a real innovation in the field of crime research. The area of criminal profiling is populated by no shortage of Walter Mittys with no empirical grounding, so is it refreshing to find a text that cements the theories of this complex and fascinating area with empirical analysis of real cases. The text is well written and opens up a new area of criminal behaviour analysis to students and police officers alike. This book will undoubtedly become a key text in the field of criminal profiling and a welcome replacement to the long list of dull criminal psychology books that do not tell you anything useful, because the ivory tower authors have no practical experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to the Subject

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
One of the good books in psychopharmacology. The details are crisp and informative but not too overwhelming. Although the format remains 'traditional' (separate sections for antidepressants, antianxiety, and antipsychotic meds), this text is great for clinicians, students, and trainees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Review for the Office
I found this book very helpful in many areas. For one it is one of the few that actually a have list of the MAO diet- it is even easy to copy to hand to patients. It not only talks about drugs that are on the market but also those not approved yet or those used in Europe. AAlthough it only barely fits in your lab coat, it is not heavy to carry. At the same time it is not too small without giving a thorough review as some small poacket books do. I recommend this to everyone but in particular for those on consultation liason service as well as training residents or fellows - being an upper level resident myself, I know the usefulness of this book from experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great manual without much competition...
Great manual but there are not that many options to choose from in this field if you want a book small enough to carry in your lab coat. In every way this book is top notch and has practical application for daily practice. It includes plenty of "cut to the chase" advice on how to manage these medicines. My only complaint is that the book is from 1997 and plenty has changed since then in the field. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Psychiatry and metaphysics blend together in this fascinating book based on a true case history. Dr. Weiss, who was once firmly entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, finds himself reluctantly drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details of her previous lives. During one hypnosis session his client introduces the spirit guides who have been her soul therapists in between lives. This is when the story really takes off for Weiss, who discovers that these guides have specific messages about his dead son as well as Weiss's mission in life. No, we cannot verify the truth of this story using the limited scientific tools we have available. However, it is hard to dispute that this well-respected graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School has discovered a personal truth that has led him to be an enormously popular speaker, author, and leader in the field of past-life therapy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book...
Many Lives, Many Masters left me with an unquenchable thirst to continue reading on the subject of past-life regression therapy. It also left me with a sense of peace and a comfort to know that higher beings are available if we should have the courage to call on them. I am a believer, not because of this book, but because of significant personal experiences. This book assisted in the further confirmation of my believes even when these are not shared by others, which is ok. It just means that they will learn when their time is right, no more, no less...

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books on the subject
The main disadvantage of the book is that it does not do what it actually "promises". In order to learn the technique of scoring and interpretation you are constantly referred to Exner's books. Without any of his books on the comprehensive system the book is useless ;-( So it may be a better idea to get the "real thing" (i.e. Exner's handbooks or the workbook).
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tertiary reference
In my experience, all of the "Essentials" series books are useful to a greater or lesser degree. I routinely write psychological testing reports, and have a stack of reference books nearby for quick perusal. This is NOT a book that should be used by students or professionals to comprehensively score and interpret a Rorschach; the Exner workbook is needed for that. However, this book has an excellently compiled index that allows the evaluator to quickly look up research and normative data on specific variables that stand out in a record.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look at other books before buying this one
I bought this book to assist me in learning the Rorshach in a projective assessment class. The book is easy to read, and it certainly provides the reader with eye catching information boxes that help to make sense out of complicated material. However, there are some problems. First, the book is out of date: it does not refer to current research or Exner's newest comprehensive edition. An update of this book might take care of this problem. Second, at times material that could be more comprehensively laid out for the reader is neglected. This concern would require the authors to re-write sections that are overly simplified. ... Editorial Review

When children witness or experience sudden, shocking events, how do they assimilate the horror? Terr found they don't simply forget and grow up unscathed. Evidence proves the trauma is recorded and repeatedly replayed by the mind. That these recurring images manifest themselves in different guises is especially intriguing in light of her speculation about repressed trauma in the work of Hitchcock, Stephen King and others. The stories here will break your heart, but Terr's advice for aiding traumatized children can help counter the blows of a violent world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive and interesting!
This is easily one of the best books on childhood trauma out there.I have read it cover-to-cover twice. It offers a comprehensive and illuminating explanation of how trauma affects children, and it is written in an interesting and engaging style.I highly, highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, readable, but problematic
I enjoyed reading this book, but I also had problems with it. Most of the information comes out of the author's own experience working with children who had experienced what she describes as psychic trauma. Primarily her subjects are the children of the Chowchilla kidnapping that took place in 1976, but there are other children that she refers to as well. While her work is important and interesting, it is certainly not the last word in trauma research. I was particularly distressed by her tendency to dismiss and invalidate the children themselves while imposing her own interpretations of their experiences on the very children she was researching. Questioning a child's ability to remember their own reality is very problematic for me, and stating as a fact a great many things that she does not document made me wonder what on earth her agenda was. She tended to alienate her subjects with her inability to believe the things they shared with her in trust and confidence, and I suspect that she lost a great deal of valuable understanding in the process. As I said, I enjoyed reading the book and I'm sure it will be a valuable addition to my reference shelf, but I do take issue with her bias and her own interpretations of experience she herself did not face. It is for this reason that I will keep her nearby as I continue my own research and understanding of trauma and recovery.

Terr gives wonderful insight to the world of trauma in children. Not only does she show how it affects their behaviour, but she also delves into how the mind deals with trauma.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving, inspiring, thought-provoking
Temple Grandin is an autistic who refused to take early retirement from life. With the help of her mother and some forward-thinking teachers, she drew upon her own inner resources, talents and strengths to move into the world of people who think in words and in two dimensions, rather than in 3-dimensional pictures.

This book provides a wonderful account of how one person with autism views herself and the world. It helped clarify some perceptions I had about people with autism and is a must for service providers.
