4-0 out of 5 stars For a textbook...
it's not bad. I had to get it for a class. It is easy to understand - the definitions of terms are in plain english. The text often presents both sides of controversial subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Child Development
As far as textbooks go this is a pretty good one.I really like theinside cover, which lays out a lot of the stages that children go through,as well as different theorists & their theories. It is a great place toturn to when you are stuck trying to figure out an answer. The book isvery well laid out & fairly easy to understand. The only thing I don'tlike about this book is that is skims over so many things.I really feelthat if you don't know a lot of background psychology information a lot ofthe text is going to go over your head. ... Margureite Wright has her head on straight. A great book. Should be in every parent and teachers library, whether they have black or bi-racial children in their lives or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight into black and biracial children's thoughts
My husband and I are white. We adopted a biracial girl last year. One of our challenges in raising our daughter is how to provide her with her african american heritage and culture. We have black friends and women who have taught me to do her hair and how to care for her skin, but we know that that is not enought. This book helped us to understand issues about race and culture differences and how children perceive these issues. It is written beautifully and has truly opened our eyes to issues that our daughter might face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I loved this book. It gave me an insight on what African American kids experience in a way that I have never found in other books. As a mother of an adopted African boy I recommend this book to anyone who has an adopted African American child. This books is better than any book I have read when the author is white and talking about African American kids. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough
This was a great book for us. It really helped us with the bedtime portion of sleep training. Within a few nights of being put to bed awake, our son was putting himself to sleep without crying. However, he still dealt with night wakings for another few months. According to Mindell, the night wakings should eventually cease. I read The No Cry Sleep Solution, The Baby Whisperer, and Good Night, Sleep Tight. What finally worked for us was Good Night, Sleep Tight by Kim West. We realized the importance of eliminating night feedings, which our son was using as a crutch, or a negative sleep association. It did involve some tears, but we are all sleeping much better now. His naps have even improved! Good Night, Sleep Tight seems very much the middle ground between crying it out and the no-cry sleep solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This book isn't for every child but for my son - it worked perfectly.I loved the fact that, even though my son is 14 months old, I was able to jump into the book in the middle and still have solutions (other books - you start from infancy or you're lost). While I didn't feel that everything in this book was right for our child - I was comfortable picking and choosing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Decidedly NOT vague
I was anxious to find a solution that didn't involve crying.I purchased the no-cry sleep solution by Elizabeth Pantley, which I found helpful, but vague. As I searched for more information I stumbled on Jodi Mindell's book, and devoured the thing in two days. Some reveiwers don't like Dr. Mindell's approach because she advocates some crying, but I would argue that those people didn't read the book very carefully.Dr. Mindell advocates all of the solutions outlined in Elizabeth Pantley's book, but with more detail and explanation. She also explains how certain parental behaviors can CAUSE sleep issues.I learned that some of the things I was doing was making the situation worse.Bottom line, Dr. Mindell advocates crying ONLY after you have made all the other changes to improve sleeping behavior.Dr. Mindell's book is well researched and well written. It is evident that she is well credentialed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them)helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Cartoonish and cruel
Alissa Quart's book takes a particular position which it advances relentless and articulately: Identifying and providing targeted services for gifted children is a form of harm which deprives them of childhood, freedom and a chance to develop without becoming parental "projects."As a prodigy herself, she felt harmed by being identified as gifted; ergo it is bad for all gifted children.
2-0 out of 5 stars A confusing commentary.
I'm glad that I borrowed this book from the library rather than purchasing it. This is not a book I want to keep on my bookshelf.
3-0 out of 5 stars left me in dilemma as the title suggests
In my view, this book tries to present limited perceived and practiced world of "giftedness." I found Ms. Quart's arguments and her choice of supporting evidences slanted more towards the negative aspects of the parenting and advocating of gifted children. She passingly mentions the concerns of parents of those highly capable kids who are bored to failure in current education system (public or private) and presents those parents' attempts as if a disservice to their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Forms of Relatedness ThatMake Us Human
This is a terrific and groundbreaking book. Peter Hobson presents a radical and scientifically coherent view of the development of intersubjectivity and its relation to symbolic forms of meaning. He carefully details the developmental science that requires a fully social and sharing human child as the medium for the emergence of consciousness. In laying out his arguments he offers a comprehensive overviewof the research base on early relatedness-- from face-to-face affective communication, to social referencing, to language, to theory of mind,to the evolutionary background of these human capacities. In the way that he brings together relatedness and symbolic meaning he seamlessly heals the Cartesian split between mind and body and in doing so also heals the rift between self and other that has been the conceptual error of the 20th century.

I found this book to be hard to read.Take the chapter headings: who is the toddler, the challenges of being a toddler, the question of temperament...Can you tell exactly are these about?I can't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Offers a unique insight for all Parents of Toddlers
I loved this title. The reason I bought it was to try to gain some insight into my own 3yr old son's shyness and it certainly gave me a clear way to help him (and I) manage and even enjoy, that behaviour. I've read many books on raising toddlers in the past and this one is written from the unique perspective of the toddler's emotional world. I personally cannot name another parenting/toddler title written in this way.
4-0 out of 5 stars An academic overview of the toddler's psyche
I am still in the process of reading this book. It's a bit dense, but it is very insightful. I think it's a good investment for parents wanting to know the basis for their toddler's sometimes conflicting behavior and feelings. A nice change from superficial fluff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look--Bowen's definitely got something.
This is a well organized, thoughtful book telling the origins and details of Bowen theory. I particularly like the many cases covered in this book. It appears that they got promising results in helping families with schizophrenic children. There is also a chapter where Dr. Bowen talks about his own efforts at differentiating within his family of origin. It's one thing to talk theory--another to apply it to yourself and then write about it. Fantastic.

It's rare to find books that are both academically credible and accessible to the layperson. This book is the exception, and the content is truly life changing. It is unfortunate that most of the people who read this book are psychologists or psychiatrists who see it as "just another method" and go back to their simplistic "find the problem and fix it" techniques.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book if you know any people

5-0 out of 5 stars Wallace may have seen something further than Darwin
Like what the great scientist Newton said "I see further for I stand on the shoulders of giants" Alfred Russel Wallace may have seen further than Charles Darwin when it comes to human nature when he later on believed that we have souls that has further made us more intelligent not just our brains which are designed by our genes.I believe that the paradigm shift where the soul or spirit needs to be accounted for when studying human nature is overdue.I myself has seen entities that could not be mistaken for something other than ghosts or spirits, although I do not blame you if you do not believe me for ghosts and spirits are hard to emperically observe by scientists so I do not blame them for being skeptical about something they could not emperically study. But I saw what I saw, as countless others all over the world saw.Although Darwin was right, Wallace saw further for he suggested that it is not only evolution that made us who we are but also because of our souls which are, as I must state again, emperically hard to observe by scientists.
3-0 out of 5 stars high on appeal, low on rigor
I used this book as a text book for a course I taught on Evolutionary Psychology. On the whole, the students really enjoyed the text and they found Buss's writing style to be very engaging and easy to read.I would agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enormously important book.
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized.Just as unfortunately, research intochildren's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lagbehaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movementdesensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapistsRobert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellinglyreadable form, the techniques they have used successfully with childrenfrom Oklahoma City to Rwanda.Geared equally to the child clinicianinterested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDRpracttioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through themystery to illuminate the method."It's like you took a magicwand, and said'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexuallyabused when she was 18months old.Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDRat work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acuteand ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of aparent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of abitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing withproblems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD,simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adultapplications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, andmodify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages ofdevelopment. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate formost children under age five, but they respond well to other forms ofleft-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonlyaccompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of someEMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they haveincluded plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage youngclients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--mostimportantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't beoveremphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned towhen necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDRwith other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are includedas well. With clients this young, significant results often come atan accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used toconducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described theeffect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of mybrain."

5-0 out of 5 stars I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is animportant reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps onlybecause the general standard is so high that one expects this work to bethe fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text aboutEMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blendedlike a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidencebased fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with arare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfactionwhen you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by theauthors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data.Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher andcompassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their timeto fellow professionals and patients. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Look at Adolescent Culture
This book presents a comprehensive view of adolescent psychology. In the first half of the book the author, F. Philip Rice, includes a chapter describing such common adolescent tehories as those of Piaget and Erikson, and presents the strengths and weaknesses of each theory. He also devotesa chapter to adolescent physical development. From reading the first fewchapters, it seems like a standard college textbook. What sets this bookapart from many textbooks dealing with this subject, however, is its focuson diversity issues and adolescent culture.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Gift Of All
Very useful prescription to put kids on. It is what's missing in America today. To those who really love their family and our country, be sure to read Building Moral Intelligence by Michele Borba, and also, West Point: Character Leadership Education.. by Norman Thomas Remick.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moral education is as important as an academic one!
"Building Moral Intelligence" by Dr. Michele Borba is a book that every parent should read and own. In a world where there are so many negative influences on the internet, in the media, T.V. shows, magazines etc. many parents do not even realize the amount of immoral influences that our children are witnessing every single day.As parents, it is up to us to teach our children the importance of good character. We need to teach them about the seven essential virtues as Dr. Borba explains in her book! 3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read
This book is very hard to read. There are citations throughout the text, and the information is not divided into many sections. The text is small, there are no graphics, key words or chapter summaries. Its a lot of valuable infomation, if you can keep your eyes open long enough to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, but advanced text
I use this text for my graduate class in child behavior disorders. I also used the first edition. In terms of level, it falls at the very top of the spectrum. It is by far the most complete and rigorously empirical text available.Discussion is sophisticated and thorough. In fact, it is almost possible to use this text without primary source supplements.
