5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
"Dibs" is an awesome classic every counselor and/or play therapist will love! And even if you're not in the helping field - its a GOOD read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, at least someone did something right
Every now and then I read a book about some parents that goes and hires a specialist to do a parents job for them. This book is probably the best example I've ever read. Simply put, we've got a couple of inept, frustrated parents who obviously have no clue how to emotionally raise a child, hiring a specialist to do the work for them. The problem I have, is that play therapy is what the parents should have been doing. By ignoring the child, never playing with him, emotionally interacting, etc, the parents just let him deteoriate. This book is a classic example.
4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging
To me, after reading the book, Dibs seems like a bright kid with parents who had no idea how to raise a child and didn't teach him any normal social skills. He just needed someone who would listen to him, give him undemanding attention, and provide a safe environment. And he got this with the therapist who wrote the book. Then he felt safe coming out of his shell and beginning to interact normally with the rest of his world. He doesn't seem autistic to me at all; he seems frustrated and afraid of doing things wrong.I liked the book.I found that the therapist continually echoing people was a little irritating after a while, but that was her technique, and seemed to work well.

4-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for new parents
There have been so many times since my son was born that I've wondered just what's going on in there. How we can wordlessly communicate, and how much I think he really understands about what's going on around him. This book does an excellent job of demystifying the mind of a baby and explains it in an engaging way. A perfect gift for new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-writen survey of current developmental psychology
This book is a concise, readable summary of recent science on baby brain development.A nice antidote to all the urban-legend-based/ new-age/ guilt-and-paranoia/ baby literature out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Between Scientific American and Dr. Spock ...
... there's a distinct need for a book between the "how-to" manuals like Dr. Spock and the "hard science" works in Scientific American and scholarly journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get multiple copies!
I just received this book this morning, and I am so excited. This is definitely the best resource I have seen in my 9 years of parenting a child with high-functioning autism! So right on. So practical.Even with the huge array of variations among children with HFA, the workbook does an amazing job of addressing the most common denominators, while drawing out each child's unique characteristics, or even just acknowledging their lack of thatparticular tendency. The workbook pages are an amazing resource to work through with a child to help with self-awareness. I know that my child will enjoy adding his input and creating thisbook about himself, and I know that it will be invaluable in helping him to understand and process the "why and how" of the way he interacts and struggles with life. The pages aimed at parents and educators are excellent, and contain insight I had been missing even after all of the time and work that we have done on this road. I am ordering at least one more copy for his school. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a bit awkward to have the kid workbook pages interspersed with the sections for teachers/parents. It would have made more sense to put them in separate volumes. However, this in no way detracts from the quality and value of the material in each. Absolutely, buy this book if you are a parent, caregiver or educator of a child with high-functioning autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can learn about myself
What a great way for Parents, relatives and teachers alike to help a child or youth with high functioning Autism learn about themselves. The workbook is for the student to write in and work through. Of many topics covered, it also allows the child to highlight the strengths and talents that he/she has, think about and write down the questions they have about their own diagnosis and write out their thoughts on paper. There is also an excellent section on ways of thinking and the all-important use of a schedule.I highly recommend "Asperger's: What Does I Mean to Me?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for educators and parents of autistic children
I have worked with autistsic children for the past 15 years.Catherine Faherty's workbook provides practical ideas for explaining self-awareness and life lessons for children and young adults with high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome. It is an excellent resource for teachers and paraprofessionals who work with autistic children in the inclusion model.Examples are clear andworksheets are well organized. This book can also help family and friends understand how autism affects a child's personal development, behavior, relationships, and overall view of the world. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Attachment
When I ordered this book I thought there was a later version available. Online there are two versions available - this one (1999) and a later one - 2002 or 2003 or even later - I can't remember. It was confusing if the later one was available or if there is even a later one. When I submitted this question to Amazon they basically said that there was no way of determining which book would be sent to me. So it was disappointing when I received the earlier version. I wasn't about to take the time to send it back because I needed to start using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great product but................
This is a great book. However, it is too clinical and hard to read. Very dry reading. I was looking for some practical tips to use at work. The heading "Handbook" is misleading. To me a handbook is a reference tool that I can go to and get information I can use quickly, practically and the client can understand. I think I wasted my money in this sense. But, it was my choice. Thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but disturbing
This book is fascinating. It's an incredibly readable, well-written wealth of information on how the human brain develops. I just wish the author would have conveyed the information without citing the details of the studies on which she bases her information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for every mother-to-be
What a great book! One of the best books on babies out there. The author not only presents tremendous amounts of very valuable and comprehensive information, she supports every one of them them with research data. The author describes babies' development from a scientific point of view, which is written in a way that a person with very limited science background can comprehend very well. Then she describes how it translates to the babies development as we experience it, for instance, in the baby's learning, reacting, hearing, seeing etc. Then she uses this information to recommend how to enhance the development of the baby. I find this book very comprehensive and very helpful in understanding what to do in every stage of the baby's life from conception up to a certain age, to create a healthy and intelligent person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a textbook treatise on brain synapses.
This book contains an impressive amount of information, but I cannot get around to sitting down and really reading it.I keep feeling like a student studying for a biology test. The writing style is really really dry!I wish that this very valuable information was put in a way that a busy mom can read! Also, I felt like the title is misleading. It talks a lot about prenatal and first year development, and much less from 1 year up to 5 years. If you are looking for regular development milestone information, this book is not it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My son conquered his OCD with help from this book
After searching the internet and reading many books for information in an effort to understand the condition my son suddenly developed, many references were made to this treatment manual.Although I am only a parent, and this book is meant for therapists, I decided to purchase it anyway.Along with my son's therapist and a low dose of medication, we used the methods and suggestions in this book to overcome his OCD.The real therapy happens at home with strong family involvement and support, so parents need to fully understand what they need to do.This book clearly guides you through the exposure and response prevention therapy steps, which is the only therapy that will help someone overcome OCD.Although I found some parts to be technical, rereading them helped me understand them better.I recommend this book for motivated parents, children & adolescents who want to overcome their OCD.The therapy is hard work, but after several weeks, you will be much better!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have treatment manual
John March is author of one of the best treatment manuals I have ever laid my eyes on. He and Mulle have laid out in very clear fashion what steps to follow in treating OCD in a child or adolescent. They add tips on what to do when problems arise and include gems of clinical knowledge that make this a must have resource for anyone treating OCD. While the book is about treating children and adolescents I have found it helped me think more clearly about doing the same type of treatment with adults. This book is directed toward the therapists who may not have a backround in cognitive behavioral treatment and explains some concepts that may seem strange to those from other backrounds. It is not written for parents but I have recomended it to them since there is little else around that explains things any where near as clearly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has changed our lives.
We recently took our 4 year old to a psychologist to be evaluated for social/emotional/behavior problems. He recommended that we implement a token economy system. While searching for information on token economy systems for kids, I stumbled upon this book. I liked that in addition to philosophical discussion about children with behavior problems it also gave you a ton of practical advice. I use this book as a manual. It has completely turned our 4 year around. I believe that if I had read it two years ago, we never would have seen these behavior problems. His advice is clear, simple, and works.Thank you Dr. Barkley!

1-0 out of 5 stars Concerned
If you suspect you or your child has ADHD ("A.D.D." is not the correct acronym), please look elsewhere for treatment and practical strategies.Any ADHD intervention book worth its salt includes a variety of approaches to treatment. If you want to avoid medication, there are plenty of options - this book is nothing novel. However, medication does work best for many children and adults and the benefits definitely outweigh the "costs" (which are relatively minor - these medications are considered quite safe).Stimulant medications do not "change" children's personalities or "break" their spirits - they help them improve their ability to function academically, emotionally, and socially. Why wouldn't you want these things for your child? Please talk to a physician or psychologist and ask for book recommendations. This book is a waste of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting. Translating it was a good experience
I found it very interesting. I learned so many things I did not know about this theme. I am not an especialist in the field. As a matter of fact, I am a translator and I had to choose a text as a final "work" to getmy college degree; so I picked this up because I thought it could be ofhelp for the kinesiologists and all therapists in the reabilitationinstitution whereit was provided to me. As a book, I think it is brief, complete, explicative, easy-reading. I am sure it is an excellent readingand handbook for any especialist in the field, and believe me, I am quitecertain of that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Theory basics made accessible and practical for teachers
The worst thing I can say about this little book is that the title doesn't name Mooney's intended audience, which the reader quickly realizes is very specific:the teachers and guides of preschool and early-elementary aged children. But for that audience -- and, I would contend, also for the parents of infants and toddlers -- this is an excellent book.Mooney's purpose is to make the wisdom of these five theorists accessible to those who do not have time or interest to read dense, abstract theory, and I think she has succeeded admirably.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent classroom resource thatlinks theory to practice
This book is an excellent introduction to the work of five major child development theorists: Dewey, Montessori, Erikson, Piaget, and Vygotsky. In the book's introduction, the author accurately describes the book as "a practitioner's manual as well as a college textbook" that is "a basic introduction . . . not intended to be academic or scholarly." While it may not be written with a "scholarly" tone, don't discount the worthiness or usefulness of this book for students in early childhood programs.Students will be pleased with this book's readability and its emphasis on linking theory to real-world practice.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to popular theories of childhood
This book was short but to the point. It is a great starting point for new parents or teachers just starting out in the child care profession. It whets the appetite for further readingon the popular theorists. The layout was simple and easy to follow. One of the best things I liked about this book was that it had discussion questions and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter. I have used this book as a teaching tool during seminars where I work. I could see this book as a good supplemental teaching tool in the classroom. A perfect addition to the pre-school teacher's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars dealing with your kids and spouse!
Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline has been a great tool. Not only for raising my children but also in dealing with my husband and students. I've applied the skills to my daily life and have found that I am a calmer person as a result. This book can be read in sections, at a fast or slow pace, and reread to regain some composure.Becky Bailey has provided insight in how to make life much more enjoyable at home!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
I am a trained professional nanny and have over 20 years experience and I am also a mother. I have read so many parenting books through nanny school, my 2 yr vocational program, and for fun...And this is by far one of the best books I have read. There have only been a few that really stood out and were books that I knew I wanted to own, this is one. I also suggest to all my families that have been/are in my family daycare to read this one. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation for my instincts!
I read this book on the recommendation of my parent educator, who thought Becky Bailey's philosophy would resonate with my instictive parenting style. She was so right! This is the first dicipline book that I have felt provided practical guidance for becoming not only a better parent, but also a more emotionally mature person.I am using her techniques and feel so much more comfortable with them than with more traditional consequence-based approaches.Although consequences may be used with Bailey's Loving Guidance, too, the emphasis is on helping the child to learn self-discipline.The child's will is respected, and the parent is held accountable for cultivating her/his own self-discipline.My son is only 17 months old, but I can already see that Loving Guidance is more effective than anything else I have tried, and using this style of discipline has increased the peace in both my household and my heart.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who chooses gentle, loving guidance over guilt, shame and regret.Attached parents will love it. ...
