The best book on children's drawings in the last decade
Bravo to this author for bringing together a wealth of material on children's drawings in a clear and readable way. Professionals as well as lay people will enjoy this book; I recommend it to parents also. Pictures are marvelous!

Very helpful
I have recently completed the book in question and found it extremely helpful. It provided the basics that I can build on to understand children's drawings and perhaps children in general. I,at least have afundamental idea of what to look for and how to interpret what is presentedto me by a child. A Valuable Resource
This book is a wonderful tool to use in developing groups for children and adolescents. Some of the activities are therapeutic in and of themselves, and others are useful for generating discussion on a number of topics. Innovative and easy to follow, I highly reccomend this book.

Worst Enemies/ Best FriendsBeacon Street Girls
Hi,My name is Taylor. I read Beacon Street Girls. It was a really great book. You never knew what to expect next. It was so interesting I could hardly put it down. It is a good book for any age girl. I felt like I was one of the Beacon Street Girls. I could see myself there. It is a perfect book for every girl. It has all the personalities of every girl, so anyone can relate to it. The book kept me guessing throughout the entire story. Even when I put it down I kept wondering what was going to happen next. I would highly recommend this book to any girl of any age. I know you will enjoy this and be glad you read it. I hope you will be as excited as I to read the next book and tell your friends.

Not as interesting as I'd hoped
I guess I was expecting something more in-depth and less instructional. I am sure this is a fine book for a parent who isn't clued into how some kids are popular and some kids have no friends at all, but I was looking for a more psychological perspective. This book is important.
Alice Miller (author of The Drama of the Gifted Child and Breaking Down the Walls of Silence) has long emphasized that if we are serious about solving society's problems, we must focus on how we treat children --- as individual families and as a cultural. This book is an excellent contribution toward that end.Read more

Case Study after Case Study
Oy! If I have to read one more 'great save' case by these authors/psychologists, I will pull out my hair. This book was one case study after another outlining in great detail what their patients said and did and how wonderfully the authors managed to break through in each case, solving all problems for the troubled family, leaving them all happy and saved as the doctors ride gloriously into the sunset. Ugh! I wanted more substance, more "this is what you need to do".There was plenty of good advice in this book, but usually it came in the first sentence or at the end of a case study. By the end of the book, I was skipping all the case studies and just searching around for the moral of the story and looking for their not bad advice.I think if the authors had simply printed out their observations and suggestions in outline form, the book would be much more helpful and most importantly, shorter.

Sensible Guidance towards Positive Change
I just had the pleasure of hearing author, Robert Brooks speak at our school about nurturing sef-esteem and resilience in our children. I found his parent friendly book to have the same warm tone that he conveys in person. His lessons and opinions are documented with true case studies and anecdotes from his professional career and peppered with a welcome sense of humor. I am learning to be a more authoritative parent with the specific, practical guidance offered in this book and I see a definite positive change in the way we as parents are communicating with our children. This book has been the key tool in helping us empower our grade school children (10 and 12) with a better attitude towards adversity. If you have toddlers or preschoolers (2's, 3's, 4's, & 5's), we also highly recommend "The Pocket Parent" as a very compatible guide to "Raising Resilient Children". Both books view "Discipline" and "Punishment" as very different procedures and both offer many positive strategies to communicate and discipline (teach children right from wrong) WITHOUT yelling, bribing, nagging, threatening, criticising and punishing. The authors of both books feel we often spend too much time remediating the weaknesses of our children and not enough time identifiying their strengths and seeing that they have ample opportunities to succeed in what they are passionate about and good at. Both authors believe that it is not only important what you need to say to your children, but HOW you choose to say it that can make the difference. We recommend both "RAISING RESILIENT CHILDREN" and "THE POCKET PARENT" for home and school libraries for parents.

great resource for to be teachers!
Being a 2nd year early childhood education student at Miami University (in Ohio!) this book is very helpful in many ways. My first time reading it bored me to tears because it all seemed like common sense but reading the DAP section for 3-5 year olds was very interesting. I had done 2 weeks field expereince at a preschool and could compare what was developmentally approraite in the classroom I was in. Plus it was an excellent tool when going to do my assignments!

Like Perls for Children
I have a thriving passion for experiential work, and Violet shows how it is applicable to child treatment.Dr. Oaklander has a deep respect for and understanding of children.She knows how to use their imaginations (and her own) to help them both heal and develop internal resources. I have included her ideas in my own therapeutic work with children/teens, and also in training clinicians.This is my favorite child therapy book.Her new book is due out in December 2006.

This is a wonderful book on using many techniques with children. She incorporates guided imagary and art therapy techniques. I work with children and have utilized many ideas with great success.I do wish she would write another book with even more techniques.

A Good Handbook
This book is good at summing up the different stages your child's development.Every age of your child's life has milestones and challenges.This book helps parents to keep things in perspective and helps reduce the stress of parenthood.

Ages and Stages
This is an average book. I personnaly don't think it worth the price. I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for development of your child, I suggest that you read Louise Bates Ames serie: Your one-year-old, Your Two-year-old, etc. even if it is a little bit outdated. Great resource for what's "normal"!
This book is great for sorting through what's normal age appropriate behavior and what's not.It helped put my mind to ease!It's grouped into four stages; 0-18 months, 18-36 months, 36 months to 3 years, and 6-10 years.Under each stage are sections on Emotional Health, Cognitive Development, Family and Peer Pressure, Personal Growth and Character Formation.It gives tips on how to encourage development in the different areas, too, which I found helpful.It has a very "positive parenting" feel to it! ... Great Book
I have applied the principles of "A.B.A." for approximately 10 years. I have worked with numerous families and children who have been afflicted with Autism. I also try to stay up to date on the newest techniques and reading materials. I found this book facsinating and have begun to apply many of these techniques with the children I am currently working with. I work with preschool and school aged children. When these principles are applied correctly I have seen amazing results. I have found this book extremely helpful and only wish I could have found it sooner.

I am father of a mild autistic 4 years old kid. My son drops away a lot of autistic features now after diagnosis at 2 yrs old. He is OK for a lot of things.
