5-0 out of 5 stars Montessori is a way of life, much more than just the materials
The Absorbent Mind isn't easy reading, the translation from Italian to English compromises the flow, however, the content is as precious as diamonds. I read it 3 times before I became comfortable with the writing style. The messages in the book are valuable. I'm happy to see that The Absorbent Mind and other Montessori literature are starting to appear on recommended reading lists 'outside the Montessori circle', it is relevant to ALL.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Fundamentals of Child education
This book spells out Maria Montessori's most salient observations about child development. An absolute 'must read'.5-0 out of 5 stars this book will change the way you see children
This is Montessori's last book, and the most in-depth discussion of her theory based on decades of scientific observation of children. It discusses the special mind of the child, and how nurturing the special potentialities that only children have is the only way to change (and save) humanity.Montessori's theories are particularly interesting today in light of recent neurological discoveries, especially those related to critical periods and language.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Offering information and answers to parents who are dealing with this issue is what makes Ms. Natenshon's book so unique. In addition to providing great information in a clear and easy to understand manner, the author prepares a clear path for parents and professionals to understnad how to prevent and ultimately to treat various eating disorders. A must have for anyone coping with this difficult issue.
5-0 out of 5 stars educational, unconditional, and a grand lesson for communicating
I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Parents and Caregivers
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for theparents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I found this book to be very helpful to give to my son's teachers before each school year.It answers many important questions, and is a great starting point for newer teachers or those who aren't very familiar with autistic spectrum disorders. It's very readable, and since teachers are so busy, they appreciate that it is short and to the point. This book has been helpful to my son's teachers, and therefore has helped my son. I am buying my third copy today to donate to the school.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
This book has the feel of a university literary thesis paper. A collection of "isms" which could apply to any point of one's life with very little of it pertinent to midlife. I got somewhat excited when the author mentioned that he was now going to discuss some case studies only to be left with literarily analogies like Faust. Not very helpful in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Your Child is Hyperactive
It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feingold diet saved my child's life
Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS TOOL NEEDED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book!My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, orlisten for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience!I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help.No specialist was able to help.I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes.Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!!I explained what I did:exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated.THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!!From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!!She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!!This is the complete truth.I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it!The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!!Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile as a practical guide
This is a how-to manual on thinking. The main emphasis is on habits of a good thinker, such as focus and purpose, and specific thinking tools, such as the "Plus, Minus and Interesting" technique. The book enumerates many specific methods of effective thinking and suggests exercises to practice each of them.4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I had a quick browse of the book and I find interesting. I believe it would have been better have a title Improve your thinking rather than teach your child how to think. I found the book to be helpfully to any age.5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Learned Thinking Tools at Age 15

3-0 out of 5 stars Only partly about development...
Shaffer, a professor at University of Georgia, has put his heart into this book on social and personality development.Besides the production problems noted by other reviewers (no colors, repetition, and expense), this book has conceptual and organizational problems.3-0 out of 5 stars tedious
While the text provides a lot of detailed information about research studies and theories, it is a bit tedious in rehashing the same information chapter after chapter.Basically, it tends to make the same points repeatedly throughout, and I found it somewhat boring to read. Also, the pages lack any hint of color, which only adds to the monotonous feeling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inclusive, Open-minded parenting guide for all parents of adopted children
This is a wonderful, encyclopedic guide for all parents of adopted children. Whether your child is young or old, new to you or has been with your family for a long time, you will learn something by reading this book. It's like having an on-line support group on your table top!
5-0 out of 5 stars Adoptive Parents... This is a must!
What a powerhouse of information Jean MacLeod & Sheena Macrae's collection is!I can't imagine any adoptive parent not having this book.It isn't the type of book you sit and read, yet I have had parents tell me they have, but it is more like a reference book to me.It has information that can help in countless situations for such a variety of problems or worries. If it can't help then it refers you to places to find help. What more can a book do?As a therapist I have this book on my coffee table in my office. There are few books that I select to sit there facing each parent that comes into my office... but this sure is one of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have' Adoption Book
This is the best adoption book/resource that I have read (and I have read a great many). It contains sensible, accessible, and realistic advice for (prospective) adoptive parents. It is also a useful tool for agency officials, social workers, interested family members etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good data but needs more specific examples
I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the foundation of modern bullying prevention!
This clear, brief, and practical book is based on extensive research and outlines an intervention to prevent bullying. Dr. Olweus's work has become the standard approach to bullying prevention, reflected in such programs asthe University of Colorado "Blueprints for Violence Prevention"project ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist !
Thanks to Sue Baron, the pediatric neuropsychologist finaly have the equivalent of the Lezak for adult neuropsychology. This book is in the top list of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and you will understand why when you will read it ! The heart of the book is the description of almost all the tests available in the field of pediatric neuropsychology. The descriptions cover the statistic properties and the main studies available on the principle tests. Each chapter that presents a function starts with a state of the art at a Phd level. It really saved me hours of reading in many books ! Included are also numerous norms (mostly americans)with unpublished ones. The references included are of a great interrest too. The chapter on report wrinting is also essential. To be perfect one would expect a chapter on achievement tests and due to its publication date the WISC IV and the WPPSI III are not included. Apart from this there is simply no criticism to formulate. In a short way I strongly recommand this book and would be very surprised to find any disappointed reader !

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Spreen & Strauss for child neuropsychologists!

This book explained so much!Growing up with foster parents and no consistent parenting has made life confusing. Its been interesting to read that any adult, even the adults with the same parents from birth also have attachment issues. This is the first book I have found that explains how someone's childhood dramatically affects our ability to attach to our own children.Every parent I know wants to give their children their best and this book shows me how anyone understand ALL the sides of attachment disorder. Most of the books I have found have only explained why a child is not able to attach. What a relief to understand the whole subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for professionals in mental health fields!
Karen's work reviews attatchment research and theory from inception through present day. It's a fascinating read as well, authored by a practitioner and teacher, one who interviewed the great minds that participated in creating a phenomenal view of child development. However, the back cover recommends it as a guide for parents, which it is not. Most parents would feel misled by finding a review of the field rather than recommended parenting skills or practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most influential books I have ever read
My education is in Physics and Economics, so whatever psychological knowledge (or lack there of) I have is self-taught. Accordingly, please understand my review is from a perspective that is surely naive. That being said I found "Becoming Attached" so profound that it spawned a hunger in me too learn as much as I can about psychology that has continued unabated 2 years after I first read this book. Currently I am immersed in Carl Jung's original writings. If anyone wants a real understanding of how nurture influences individually psychology, I believe this to be an amazing starting point. Please note: this book is solid and dense, I would not read it if you are looking for something light and airy or are interested in the latest pop-psychology. It is for the serious novice. Since I am now a firm believer that nature and nurture work in combination to determine who we are individually, I also highly recommend reading the book "Moral Animal" by Robert Wright. "Moral Animal" is the perfect compliment to "Becoming Attached" and gives a very compelling introduction on how nature influences us. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Child Psycology? Blaa to it...
This book may contatin alot of useful information. I am a second year student in the Child And Youth Worker program, and it cost me about $140, for about $50 of use...alot of the information in this book was new to me, and I did learn alot, but having said that, the only reason I bought it was because it was mandatory. This book is the most boring piece of crap I have had to read thus far in my program. Facts left and right, but little connection in the actual paragraphs. All connections made are in blurbs about other people's storys. And even those a weak at best. I recomend NOT buying this book. Waste of money and time. If you in college and you need to buy it, show your prof. these two reviews, then refuse to buy it yourself :)

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, I use it for my classes
I use this text for my undergrad and grad classes. The information is complete and has great breadth. My undergraduates have found this to be a great resource for information on classes of disorders and on specific disorders. It is easy to read, without being simplistic. The pedagogical features (e.g., sidebars, pictures, etc.) are a matter for personal choice.I personally feel they are distracting, but my undergraduate students like them and say that they are helpful.

This book came in a timely manner and is in the condition I expected. No complaints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Followthrough of Promises
This book is ideal for anyone with some knowledge about psychology. It provides some general information regarding cognitive-behavioral theory, but it does so in almost a "need to know" format; as the book goes through the outline of how to conduct a session according to the cognitive-behavioral formati, it explains the rational behind the design in a clear and intelligent way. A great supplement to a Master's level education.

It was not what I thought. I thought it was a book to read to kids, instead it is a WONDERFUL workbook with ideas, activities, etc. Definately for teachers but very useful even for this grandma!

5-0 out of 5 stars so helpful
I am an Elementary School Counselor.I got this book to help me put together small groups for some of my students. The book is wonderful. It is full of great and effective ideas.I bought many resources in the past, and this is by far the best one to help children understand and work through anger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right Combination for Anger and Anxiety
I have been working this past year on all areas of helping my child and myself learn to manage anger, stress, anxiety and frustration.I am lucky to be working with a teacher that is willing to explore and take advice from authors like Elaine Whitehouse. This book takes the chaos out of anger. Adults and children learn how to recognize and deal with and express normal feelings of anger. This, coupled with the anxiety and anger management techniques from Lori Lite's "Children's Awareness Curriculum" and "Indigo Dreams" CD have been just the right combination for me and my child. The more we as a community are exposed to these books and concepts the quicker we will have a peaceful, communicative society able to resolve conflict before the volcano errupts. This should be a required class for all children and adults. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read - Lots of Information

1-0 out of 5 stars A concerned adult with ADHD
I am an adult with ADHD inatintive type. I have struggled all my life with this condition.Howevere, I have managed to earn a BA in psychology and I am currently working on a masters degree.Because of my expierences in psychology classes I know something about scientific research and empirical evidence. This book was a major dissapointment to me because it lacks thesimple scholary research to prove the claims made by Dr Lawless. I am afraid this book is nothing more then modernday snake-oil that will cause more harm then good.

Concerned Mom,
2-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING!
There are many great ideas presented in this book about dealing with your add child, BUT the chapter on meds is completely off base.Let me preface the following with MY opinion (I am not an MD or an expert) that children with ADD need a team approach in helping them deal with the condition (if you choose to call it one) and there is a place for meds for many kids, BUT it is only a piece of the puzzle. Parents, teachers, family members, Md's, and behavioral specialists are all crucial. I happen to work indirectly with many of the world thought leaders and experts on ADD (ie. Joseph Beiderman, Mass General Hospital, Boston MA/ Harvard Medical School, ... look up his credentials). First Dr. Frank Lawlis is not an MD, this means he has not been to medical school- that is not to say he isn't a great psychologist, just that he HAS NOT and DOES NOT write prescriptions for these meds and has NO first hand experience with directly managing these meds himself. In this book there are many things that are completely false regarding ADD meds. For example he states that they only work for about 50% of kids.FALSE Let me cite 3 credible sources that di
