4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Ignore the fussy Library Journal review up there and get this book if you have any suspicion that you were raised by a narcissist. I'm just starting the process of coming to terms with my childhood and this book has been a tremendous help. Dr. Golomb collects a diverse range of case studies, insightfully explains the psychological processes at work in each one, and then finally brings the lessons of all the cases together to offer practical advice on recovery. If you've been dogged by the cruelty and rejection of a narcissistic parent all your life, this book is a great way to begin the process of moving out from under that shadow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a "GREAT BOOK" if your ready to learn how your life has been effected by your childhood.Very moving and can be pain full in some parts.A must read if your ready to understand the why and the what.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book not just about narcissists, but about manipulative people!
This book was great. It flowed well, with a lot of real life stories. The explanation and solutions were well tied into those stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars We forget that we're animals....
Amazing piece of work. Very slow reading... meaty. Well written. This should be the primer for every field of study in every country. We are first and foremost biological organisms. We live in language like fish in a fish bowl. Fish can't distinguish water. It defines them. Same with language with human beings... we are defined by our listening and speaking and don't have a clue.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Look at Knowledge.
Excellent and superb are words that come to mind while reviewing this work. The authors, Drs. Humberto R. Maturana (biologist, University of Chile) and Francisco J. Varela (Foundation de France Professor of Cognitive Sciences and Epistemology, Paris) attempted and succeeded in providing a clear and concise work in a difficult field. Their goal was to "propose a way of seeing cognition not as a representation of the world 'out there,' but rather as an ongoing bringing forth of a world through the process of living itself."
1-0 out of 5 stars A Real "Gem"
The entire text is based on the following invalid inference:

2-0 out of 5 stars only because of the class
I only got this book for the class I was taking.I have no opinion on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource to address behavior problems
This book is a fabulous resource for anyone working with children or adults who display inappropriate behaviors.Special Education teachers, administrators, Behavior Specialists, Counselors, Psychologists and people providing direct care will benefit from the hands-on tool. The book gives sample Behavioral Support Plans (Behavior Management Plans) derived from an excellent Functional Assessment Interview (FAI) tool. Readers will learn how to target the problem behavior and provide measurable objectives to address the behavior.A "must have" for anyone providing support to students or adults with behaviors and/or MR/DD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough; Easy to both read and implement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for pediatric clinical workers.
I am writing about the 3rd edition, which is the most current volume. The only disappointment that I have about this text is that I did not obtain it much earlier. The chapters are well written with many references for further study. The practitioner can keep abreast of the current literature on topics that s/he may already be familiar, or obtain authoritive information about other clinical areas not part of one's regular practice. This text is not written in the style of a dictionary, that is, the reader is given a summary in the style and length of a journal article. The book compliments the older volumes of the American Handbook of Psychiatry for which I have still found much use.3-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth it?
The strength of the book is that it summarizes the main issues on assessment and treatment quite well. Certainly worthwhile for a quick reference to current opinion on topics but if you're after the finer detail of theory this may not be your book and you might want to try "Child Psychopathology" by Mash & Barkley. The question to ask is, is this book worth $170USD new? If you don't mind spending this money then the book is a useful addition to a professional library for advanced students and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of clinical child psychology
This is indeed the "Bible" for the clinical child psychologist. As a pediatrician, who through all my professional life have worked closely with child psychologists, permit me to review this very serious and professional handbook. It is edited by C Eugene Walker from Oklahoma and Michael C Roberts from Kansas with 114 contributors (all from United States). The first edition of the handbook was published 18 years ago and it has since turned into a reference and guide for students, adademics and clinicians in the field. The book is divided into seven sections with a total of 55 chapters. The first section deals with child development and the first chapter with families and children in history with a focus on American history, but I especially liked the chapter by Judith A Chafel and Kathryn Gold Hadley on poverty and well-being of children and their families. This is a new addition to this edition, but a very important one. Poverty and hunger are old phenomena, but only recently become a subject of research and interest to politicians. They should be interested, because poverty is a major public health problem in many developed countries. Data from 1996 in the United States estimate that 20.5% of the children were living in poverty. This well researched paper will give you information on definition of poverty, effects on development, health and psychosocial risks, resiliency and implications for clinical intervention. Section two provides different diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, section three deals with problems of early life and clinical problems of birth, neonatology, infant and preschool period and section four about problems of childhood. This last section has 16 chapters with some interesting entries. I especially liked the chapter on mental retardation, which takes into account the 1992 American Association on Mental Retardation (AMMR) definition of mental retardation, where not only IQ, but multidimential classification was used as a novel way to look upon mental retardation. I would have liked an entry on the use of the word "mental retardation", which is very much debated (sometimes very hotly like at the last international conference in Seattle in August 2000) and at all not in use in many parts of the world, where instead the term "intellectual disability" is preferred.Section five has nine relevant chapters on adolescence, but I would like to see a chapter on teenage pregnancy in the next edition, because that is especially a problem in United States and United Kingdom, where we are talking about potential psychological risks for the next generation also. Section six conveys intervention strategies with good chapters on hospitalization and pharmacotherapy among others. The last section has special topics like cultural issues, divorce, grief, ethics and forensic evaluation. The chapter on impact of a parent chronic illness is very interesting and I would also suggest a chapter on chronic illness or disability in the child for the next edition. This topic is mentioned in another chapter (on contemporary issues), but deserves a full chapter. The words disability and intellectual disability are not mentioned even in the index. In this section I especially like the chapter on child maltreatment by Barbara L Bonner and collegues, which is a good review of the field of child abuse and neglect, but again the focus in on the United States and international work in the field not mentioned. A chapter on research in child psychology and the use of internet should be added for the next edition. The effects of the internet on children and adolescents should also be added. We recently had a case here in Israel, where an internet connection between two adolescents (a Jewish male and Arab female) were used by terrorists to capture and murder the 14 year old boy. I would have liked to see a section eight with chapters on the future of infancy, childhood and adolescence both in the United States, but also a chapter on international work and research in the field of child psychology. All in all a very positive review for a very useful handbook that can be used by both psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physicians and thanks for a good editing job. It was a pleasure to read and use this handbook.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents with ADHD kids
This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly informative
I first heard of this book from a friends mother who is a montessori teacher.I attended a lecture by Dr. Lillard about this book.It was interesting to see how there is a way to really teach children, after hearing about how much public schools are failing our children. After the lecture I went home and purchased the book.I can't say enough about it.Its incredibly interesting and I think that everyone not just parents should read it.It is amazing what children can accomplish when given the tools and opportunity that montessori provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
If you are interested in understanding the scientific basis for the success of the Montessori approach, this is the book to read. Because there have been few studies that have compared traditional and Montessori outcomes head-to-head, Lillard does the next best thing: synthesize decades of pyschological and sociological research that validates Montessori theory and practice. She clearly demonstrates that the teaching method Maria Montessori established through empirical observation and trial and error in her own classrooms has been well-confirmed in its efficaciousness by subsequent studies in human cognitive development. This is a superbly written book, and Lillard is very good at presenting often highly intricate research in an accessble meanner. Although she is obviously a supporter (and product) of Montessori education, she does not wear her bias on her sleeve. She does not leave out research that either does not support or cannot yet be shown to support the Montessori method. If you already send your child to a Montessori school, you will find your good decision supported by her research; if you are thinking about Montessori, you will be convinced after reading this book that your choice is easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
This is a very well written book, with a wealth of information culled from studies on children's development and the optimal conditions for growth and learning. The prose is clear and easy to digest. I recommend Lillard's book for anyone - parents, teachers, and policy makers - interested in children regardless of interest in Montessori. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend this book to all who are interested in the quality of life & peak performance in life's remaining years!
Together with Richard Leider's books (particularly, Life Skills, The Power of Purpose & The Inventurers) & Richard Bolles' Parachute book, this book has been most pivotal in helping me to navigate my mid-life transition during the early 90's.
5-0 out of 5 stars describes common feelings of being 40 years and older
When I got my first grey hairs I started feeling so many different things about life and the process of aging. This book explained the different feelings I was having. It was a great relief to realize my feelings were so common. The words are easy to understand. The stories about others who have their own issues as they age are good ones to learn from. I recommend this book for any one feeling a bit perplexed about the aging process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent volume
In this volume, Professor Bandura situates the self-efficacy construct within a theory of personal and collective agency that operates in concert with other sociocognitive factors in regulating human well-being and attainment. Bandura also addresses the major facets of agency - the nature and structure of self-efficacy beliefs, their origins and effects, the processes through which such self-beliefs operate, and the modes by which they can be created and strengthened. In addition, Bandura reviews a vast body of research on each of these aspects of agency in diverse applications of the theory. Must-reading for everyone interested in psychology and, specifically, self-efficacy beliefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A significant contribution to the field of psychology.
Albert Bandura explores the self-system throughout lifespan. Self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy help people to adjust to realities of each life's stage, from early childhood till aging and preparation to death.5-0 out of 5 stars Bandura 's Self-Efficacy Helps Understand Human Nature
Dr. Bandura has written an excellent book for scholars, researchers, as well as the casual observer of human nature and behavior. It is comprehensive and well documented. He helps one understand why some people seem to get what they want and need out of life and others do not. I give it my highest recommendation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Limited in scope
The exercises are good, but limited in number.I've also had problems with the exercises appealing to a wide range of kids. The book is useful, and the philosophy that teens are doing their job by having their developmental crises is a positive change from the "disaster" of adolescence that we hear so much about.I would recommend it for those working with basically high-functioning kids with "normal" kinds of difficulties/crises.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and creative approach
This book is noteworthy for its pratical approach. Along the book you can find lots of creative exercises to do with your teenage clients. I consider these activities an excellent resource even for individual therapy (someare very easily adapted), because they are ready to use (the authorprovides already made materials appropriate for this developmental phase),self diclosure eliciting and presented in a game-like fashion, what isappealing for the adolescents. The activities are divided into severalthemes, related with adolescents problems and concerns. Some of thesethemes are not easy to approach within the group due to some resistance, insecurity and fear of rejection by other members and by the leader. Itsnecessary to know how to get to core of the hurting issues without makingthe group feel threatened. This is what this book is all about... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the magic years
I FIRST READ THE MAGIC YEARS IN 1968 AS A SOCIAL WORK STUDENT; LATER THAT YEAR MS. FRAIBERG VISITED OUR AGENCY FOR CASE DISCUSSIONS.I REREAD THIS BOOK SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY OWN CHILDRENS' PRESCHOOL YEARS TO BRING ME CLOSER TO THEIR REALITY. PARENTS ARE IN SUCH A STRATEGIC PLACE IN A CHILD'S LIFE DURING THOSE YEARS PROTECTING, GUIDING AND DIRECTING EMOTIONAL WELL BEING.THE MAGIC YEARS FOCUSES ON THAT PERIOD OF DEVELOPMENT THAT SETS THE STAGE FOR EMOTIONAL WELLBEING THROUGHOUT THE REST OF LIFE.MS. FRAIBERG LOOKS AT THE NORMAL STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT RATHER THAN THE DEVIANT AND PATHOLOGIC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for understanding toddlers
I read this book because Holly Van Gulden recommended it at an attachment workshop I attended. I've read it twice now and I refer to it all the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars A source of conflict for Buddhist practicioners

Perhaps that the Ego must be built in order to be destroyed...? Or that Mrs. Freiberg is wrong? Or Buddha is wrong? Or it was me to not have understood either? ;-) ... Read more
