3-0 out of 5 stars Not for all special needs situations, but helpful
The methods in this book detail considerable sacrifice of parents time and resources devoted to one child; in a multiple child or two-working parent household, this would not be as beneficial and produce results as claimed from Floor Time program. Also, there are many types of special needs children with needs not addressed in this book. While overall helpful and a must-read for involved parents, continue seeking assistance from local programs and teachers/therapists, and use this as one small part of your reading list. This book does not address all the needs of all special needs children, but it is helpful and gives detailed explanations and plans to begin with.We have four special needs children with four separate diagnoses, so we are not first time parents, nor is this book the definitive program or resource for any of the four.Read it, try it, then continue researching and resourcing!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Read for Parents with Autistic Children
Our 20-month old son was diagnosed by two separate agencies (one was South Carolina's Department of Disabilities and Special Needs) in August of 2005. We had fought for some sort of diagnosis since he was about one year old, due to SO many issues we saw that were not present with our first children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It's hard to really review a book on Floortime because you're not discussing the book so much as the techniques behind it. As a speech therapist, I got into this method because it mirrored my basic instinctive approach to and ideas about therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource
This book is perfect for anyone working with at-risk children and adolescents. As a child therapist, I found that the activities helped to engage even children who are highly reluctant to engage in therapy. There are a wide variety of activities in the book that range in age from preschool to teenager and address just about every treatment issue you could think of.Most important, the activities are fun for the kids while also being therapeutic.I would highly recommend this book-- it's worth every penny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars guided by Bronfenbrenner
As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text.In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research. This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum.Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking.By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention. Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.

Editorial Review

Lucy Jo Palladino defines the Edison Trait (named after Thomas Edison) as divergent vs. convergent thinking. Edison Trait kids--one in five children--have the qualities that make innovative leaders, inventors, explorers, yet they often have a hard time in school where their personality traits may be seen as weak or negative. Palladino recasts these children in a positive light and gives specifics on understanding and becoming an ally for your Edison Trait child. The book is convincing, reassuring, and accessible. Perhaps it will help parents of nonconforming kids resist the pressure to make their kids "just fit in." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love rewires the brain
Pharmaceutical drugs are only one line of defense in treating ADD. Drugs can alter brain chemistry but the patient is fundamentally the same personality. Medication alone will only go so far. A combination of prescriptions and psychotherapy yield better long-term results. Thomas Edison owed his life to his mother who believed in him when the schools kicked him out at 6. There is something to be said about love ... love itself can rewire the brain of a "problem" child.

Editorial Review

Recognizing each child's intellectual, emotional, and physical strengths--and teaching directly to these strengths--is key to sculpting "a mind at a time," according to Dr. Mel Levine. While this flashing yellow light will not surprise many skilled educators, limited resources often prevent them from shifting their instructional gears. But to teachers and parents whose children face daily humiliation at school, the author bellows, "Try harder!" A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Levine eloquently substantiates his claim that developmental growth deserves the same monitoring as a child's physical growth. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Levine
I loved this book because I believe that every child is unique and I appreciate being reminded about the complexity of the brain and why it should be expected that we all have little quirks. Educators can sadly have blinders to differences in learning style. Mel Levine's work reminds me of Howard Gardner's in many ways. I sense that he truly cares about kids and I like that he supports what is best practice in education. Levine says he can learn more about a child by getting to know that child than by reading a list of test scores........let's hear it for that! Levine says, "sometimes you fix a weakness by pursuing strengths." I support that positive approach. To enhance my teaching I found many great quotes perfect for Back to School night and parents who have borrowed his book have enjoyed it immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener and food for thought
I first picked up this book because I believe that every child is an individual and has individual needs. When I started reading the book I finally found someone else who believes that too. Levine carefully looks at each "learning disability" and breaks it down into various components. Upon reading, I began to see many of my own RSP students more clearly. Susie doesn't just have ADD,she has problems with auditory distrators. For those naysayers, perhaps Levine is ahead of his time, perhaps he has seen somethings others haven't yet (remember, there was a time when folks that blood-letting was appropriate). For me and several of my professional friends, this book is an inspiration to look more deeply at each student and it gives us the tools to do so.It is heavy reading, I will admit. I actually took the content and created a graphic reading guide to go with it for my staff because you can get lost in it if you are not a careful reader. This is not casual bedtime reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mel Levine is an idiot
I found this book to be insulting to children and to educators. This man obviously has no idea what he is talking about, his ideas are strictly from the deficiency model of student underachievement which has been shown to be a faulty method of explanantion.Any educator who reads this book and takes it seriously should be relieved of their jobs ASAP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book was pretty helpful. It covered most topics that I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very User Friendly
I like the variety of ways that the stories can be presented to the student. The stories may be cut into conceptual thoughts, or put into a three-ring binder, placing the pages in plastic sheets, just to name a couple. It leaves room also for filling in any missing pieces of the Social Story puzzle, dependending on the circumstance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives visual insight to struggles
This well illustrated book not only helps those with ASD, but also those of us who come in contact with them on a daily basis. As I read the stories and illustrations, it helped me to understand that even things which we may consider simple, can be a challenge to a person with ASD . Tasks such as chewing gum, sharing, knowing when to say "excuse me", chewing food properly, and so many more are illustrated in this book. Good job! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Vygotsky, Mind in Society
This is a good start to understanding the researh and theories of Lev Vygotsky.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMUST READ for parents, preschool through elem educators.
While the book is full of theory that might discourage someone from reading it, it has an absolutly fantastic practical implacation worth the effort! The second half of this book, "Educational Implications" discusses the Zone of Proximal Development. Learning about this "Zone" plus the discussion regarding how children learn to read and write, tells those of us who really want to help children learn, ways to set-up an environment and activities to do it!!5-0 out of 5 stars Socio-historical psychology
This is one of the earliest and still one of the best introductions to socio-historical psychology, the study of how individual human intelligence develops in interaction with people and the environment. In concert withmany contemporary approaches in cognitive science today, Lev Vygotsky, A.R.Luria and A.N. Leontiev argued that human intelligence ischaracteristically mediated through objects and social activity.Humansthink through tools.Talking to oneself, for example, is not an irrelevantactivity.Putting one's actions into speech is a way of focusing one'sconsciousness on the problem. This kind of speech is not pointless, butrather a cognitive tool that gives one a greater awareness of one's ownactions and makes it easier to modify these actions--a point that Vygotskyproved with research on how children solved problems.Much of humanactivity involves making use of tools, signs, and activities, the kineticmelodies of action and conceptualizationthat make us smart, and throughwhich we are able to accomplish the uniquely human feats of complexintellectual action. This is an excellent place to begin studying Vygotskyand activity theory. If you like this you will also like A.R. Luria's *TheMaking of Mind*, and the classics *The Man With A Shattered World* and *TheMind of a Mnemonist*, the books that inspired Oliver Sacks' writing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist, Sexist, Dismissive of Anything but Biology
Feldman's "well-researched" book is a classic human development book, written from a rich white man's view. He does very little to express race and gender as anything but biology. These two things are sociological constructs in addition to being somewhat biologically based. In my world, half-truths are still lies. This book has a lot of pictures of people from different cultures, with different phenotypes, et cetera. It does not walk the walk or talk the talk of a socially responsible take on human development and psychology. For instance he uses Freud to speak of gender roles- a man who named an entire stage of human development after the penis. Just a poor read overall. It felt like going back to high school biology class. Not much more than a survey book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise with current views on life development psychology.
I used this book in our Life Development Psychology. In the course of my study, everything I needed to know is in the book. Feldman is very thorough and organized. I have read other books on this subject in our library but by far this is a superior book. This book deserves 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to refer back to again and again!
I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book.As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is veryexciting to find a method of working with children that offers practicaland impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you mayalready be doing.I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at theTheraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the TheraplayCertification process.Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particularchild, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model hasgiven me pervade my work.Parents of children that I am using Theraplaywith often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior andattachment to them in a short period of time. One father of aninternationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going tobe able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were takinghim to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physicaltherapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us.Theraplay hasallowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress inother areas of development."5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems.
Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't.Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of thiswork, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I foundmy self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense."Afterreading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from thiswell researched, time-tested work.Reading this book and attending thetraining has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a childtherapist. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Older kids
I think this would be a highly useful book for parents of children 8 and older. There are activities for your child to do like rating their worry on a number scale that I felt were too abstract/advanced for my 4 year old.The general information about anxieties would be good for parents of children of any age.

My 8 year old daughter has a lot of issues with anxiety. Fortunately it hasn't gotten to the point where it's extreme but we want to give her tools so that it doesn't get that way. I myself have had issues with anxiety my whole life so I'm sure much of the problems stem from hereditary.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst study guides
It is a shame that my copy was not proofread. There are numerous incorrect answers.I had to spend double the time to find all the correct answers. It upsets me that I spent so much money to help me and it created more work for me.I don't think that I will be purchasing another study guide from this publisher in the future. It had the potential to be a great study guide had more attention been taken when it was released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological, psychological, and social factors on growth. This bookwill definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

4-0 out of 5 stars I used this book for my Dev. Psych class
The chapters are long, about 40 pages each, but I found this book to be excellent for examining the development through the lifespan. If you could see my copy, it's underlined all over the place, there's some great material in this book. I am considering having children and will definately refer to this book if and when I do. It basically tells you how to NOT mess up your kids! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional and behavioral disorders of children and youth
This is an impressive book in its seventh edition since 1977 and used as an introductory text in special education on the subject of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. It is also impressive, because the publisher has developed a companion website accompanying the book with resources for the professor and the student (www.prenhall.com/kauffman). The website is divided according to the chapters of the book with focus questions, multiple choice questions and web resources. The user will also find a message board and a chat room for communication with other students and professors. For the professor there is a syllabus manager in order to create and modify an online syllabus for their courses. The book has 18 chapters arranged with the text arranged around basic concepts like the nature, extent and history of the problem and conceptual approaches to it, assessment of the problem, major causal factors, the many facets of disordered emotions and behavior and each chapter ending with personal statement or reflections by someone else that the author, about teaching pupils with these disorders. I especially liked the history chapter of special education for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, because history is so important for how we deal with problems today. Before 1800 most of the children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders were looked upon as possessed, wicked or idiotic. In the 19th century teaching went from lunatic asylums and institutions for idiots to houses of refuge, detention centers and later to public school classes for truants, troublemakers and backward pupils. In the 20th century the mental hygiene and child study movements led efforts to deal more effectively with the youth at home and in school. In the 1940s psychoanalytic oriented educational programs began, 1960s and 70s saw periods of rapid growth in educational interventions and the 1980s saw new legislation. All in all a recommended book for persons working with emotional and behavioral disorders both in children and youth.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for EBD teachers
I had this book as one of my college textbooks. It is very user friendly and has a lot of great qualities. The book describes all of the possiblefactors associated with emotional and behavioral disorders, as well asprevalance, history, models of thinking, screening and classification.Thebook dexcribes many different disorders by giving definitions, types, prevalance, causes and prevention, and intervention strategies. One of thebest things about the book is the abundance of ongoing case studies in thechapters. These are especially great for discussion with others aboutcauses and stratagies for prevention.Every chapter has questions at thebeginning to think about as you read, and a summary at the end. There arealso personal reflections by different teachers and professionals at theend of every chapter, which relate to experiences these people have hadwith the various disorders.Overall, this would be a great collegetextbook, or a great reference book for someone seeking information aboutemotional and behavioral disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for aspiring play therapists!
I was required to read the book for a class I was completing on Play therapy. It was a very easy read, well organized with a good mixture of research and anecdotal information. What makes the book a truly outstanding resource is Dr. Landreth's very candid insight into the practice of play therapy as well as his willingness to share with the reader his very sincere love and respect for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of hope
This book gives lots of case stories of adults with ADD.The book is long, but easy to read. There is lots of information about ADD, its diagnosis, and the newest treatments for it.But most of all, this book offers lots of hope for adults with ADD, that they can have happy and full, productive lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Somebody knows what they're talking about
As an adult with ADHD, I really appreciated this book's frank approach to all the sides of having ADHD. The authors have it too, which helps, because they are successful professionals. I am a professional who plans to be more successful once my doctor and I get my medication right. I have read it twice now and will continue to use the book as an invaluable resource.
