5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
I read this book to my toddler when he started hitting and then reinforcing it by saying hands are not for hitting when ever he would hit.It really worked - he loved doing some of the fun things that hands are good for as we read along.I liked it that it focused on positive things to do with your hands while still enforcing that hitting is not what hands are for.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
shows many ideas of what hands can be used for and they are not for hitting.

2-0 out of 5 stars It depend on what you are looking for .....
This is a great book, if you want your child to think of all kinds of great things you can do with your hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A standard is born
I had the pleasure of being an online graduate student at Florida State University where Dr. Driscoll was teaching. Having Dr. Driscoll as an instructor, using her own book as a textbook for the course, was an invaluable experience for me. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of cognitive learning theories need not look any further than this book. The logical formatting and presentation, the examples and explanations of theory from a variety of sources, makes this book a true gem, and one I still refer to, years after attending Dr. Driscoll's course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think.
Just finishing my masters in secondary education, this is the book I find myself using as a reference most often.Just about everything is here in regards to the psychology of education from the elementry stuff like Behaviorism through a hoard of theorists like Piaget, Asubel, Brunner, etc. etc. etc.The contrast presented at the end of the book between Gagne and the constructivists makes the book feel particularly relevant.5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Practical
Marcy's book was the text for a course I attended, and it was packed with useful information. Her writing style is clear and organized into meaningful content areas. I found her examples to be practical and they easily conveyed the essence of the context. In general, the book exemplified the principles discussed in the materials by being student-centered. ... Editorial Review

Do you think your child is special? Well, perhaps he or she is! Self-help professionals Lee Carroll and Jan Tober have collected essays by dozens of doctors, counselors, and other childhood experts that seem to document the arrival on earth of a newly evolved species of human kiddie referred to here as an "indigo" child. The 10 most common traits are: 1.) They come into the world with a feeling of royalty. 2.) They have a feeling of deserving to be here. 3.) Self-worth is not a big issue. 4.) They have difficulty with authority by ritual or without explanation. 5.) They simply will not do certain things. 6.) They get frustrated with systems that don't require creative thought. 7.) They often see better ways of doing things. 8.) School is often difficult for them and they can seem antisocial. 9.) They will not respond to guilt-trip discipline. 10.) They are not shy about letting you know what they need. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Half-baked... just like "gifted child" programs, no support for adults?
The problem I have with a book like this isn't necessarily the premise. I agree there are some kids with a profound amount of energy, intuition, and desire to change the world. The problem I do have is with the movements as a whole, that fill a kid's head with extremely lofty ideas... and then what?

3-0 out of 5 stars I expected something more substantial...
I do believe we are living the indigo children era. However, I think the book brings just a superficial view of the subject. It's a simple compilation of testimonials. It could have gone deeper on the indigo's phenomenon and its spiritual characteristics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Often Recommended
The mother influences the child's growth and development. That's pretty obvious. This book goes to the neurobiological underpinnings of this phenomenon, referring to several thousand studies, to show how the connection between mother and child actual influences the way the child's brain develops. It is a treasure trove of information on how the prefrontal cortex matures through interaction with the mother in the early stages of life. 5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally thorough, well written study
I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological andanatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discussesBowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and other attachment theorists, providing theessential facts of affective and attachment development, and then in a veryclear, understandable way, provides the neuroanatomic and neurochemicalexplanations of the observed phenomena. The book is intensively researched, and the ideas are developed in a sequential, logical and easy-to-followmanner. I recommend reading Robert Karen's book "BecomingAttached" first, to truly understand Schore's book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am a professional counselor and this book was recommended to me by another professional counselor.I find it very helpful in working with children of all ages.I even use some of the techniques on my oldest child who has some anxious behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents
This book is one of the best I've seen in terms of describing how anxiety works and providing tips to combat it. It is written clearly and plainly and even includes some illustrations that make it very easy to understand why kids with anxiety have difficulty with certain tasks. This book gave me hope for how I could help my two sons with anxiety. It made me feel empowered by giving me concrete advice that I could use at home and pass on to their teachers at school. This is required reading for anyone who has anxiety themselves or is trying to helping someone else who does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but not a quick game guide
As a teacher, child psychology graduate and mother I have to say that this book was very useful.Even having studied most of the material in this book in university, it was a excellent reminder of the many ways to stimulate a child's mind.Yes there are not many gmaes - and the ones included are simple and sometimes obvious. However the connection the book makes between the games, that most parents play with their babies anyway, and how those games stimulate the mind is fascinating and is what this book is really trying to do.Once you understand the function of a particular game you can adapt and modify and make new games that stimulate the same parts of the brain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
As a first time mother with zero child development knowledge, other than my own personal experience, I found this book very informativeand useful. It is easy to read and gives you a good foundation for your child's development. I found it helpful the way it is broken down into age appropriate chapters so as my daughter prosgresses, so does the book.I would recommend this book over "What's going on in there?..." by Lise Eliot. The information is duplicated and this one is easier to read. I also have some of those "125 games to play with baby...etc", but if you want to learn about your child, this is the book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changes the way you think about learning
I wanted to address one theme I've seen in other reviews. Some reviewers have been disappointed that there weren't more specific games/activities in the book. However, I've found that the information is so compelling and well-written that it changed the way I think about learning in babies and therefore changed how I interact with my baby.Rather than giving me specific activities, they changed the way I think so that I can come up with the specific activities that maximize learning in my child.

Alan Kazdin is one of the preeminent child psychologists and a superb writer. His manuals are always top-notch, and "Parent Management Training" is another terrific book.Written for mental health professionals, the book outlines in detail parent management training (PMT), a behavior-based treatment developed for parents of children with conduct problems. The treatment has been shown to work in numerous studies, as detailed by Kazdin. In fact, PMT is one of the most thoroughly investigated child treatments.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you have to choose, you should select "In Over Our Heads"
I happened to read Kegan's, "In Over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life," prior to reading "The Evolving Self." While both books were very good, I don't think I gleaned a whole lot of additional insight from "The Evolving Self." So, if you are busy and can only afford to read one or the other of these two books by Kegan, I recommend you select "In Over Our Heads."

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE BESTS EVER
Comprehensive, Brilliant, highly Creative and introduces a vocabulary for human development that plugs into so many important theoretical and practictical domains.A year before this book came out, Ken Wibler wrote "The Atman Project" which articulates a very similiar vision from a slightly different angel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Developmental Masterpiece
The Evolving Self is one of the best books that I have ever read.Kegan's eloquent presentation of the dynamic process of human consciousness evolution is incredible.Kegan presents the very best of developmental theory, while at the same time acknowledging and avoiding the trappings that such a perspective tends to fall into.Developmental theory can often lead to a very compartmentalized view of people, but Kegan's emphasis on the person as a meaning-making process sidesteps these tendencies.Throughout his writings, I felt an incredible empathy with the undercurrent of evolution sliding under all personality.Rather than using his model to categorize myself and those around me (as I have an unfortunate inclination to do with developmental theory) I instead found myself identifying with the universal forces that run through all human beings which express themselves in and as the developmental stages. This might perhaps seem like an unimportant semantic shift, but in actuality it discloses a monumental difference between these two stances. This is true precisely because my ability to help another is proportional to the degree to which I can identify with them and their struggles. The warmth of this genuinely empathetic approach to psychological development is refreshing and liberating. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams.I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams.I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely.Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this. I feel that the fact that I got an 'A' on the exam says very positive things about the text and its ability to prepare you for the testing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but lacking
Used for a developmental psychology class, this book wasn't worth the $94.00 I paid for it. I could have easily substituted this book for any introductory psychology textbook. Piaget, Kolberg, Erikson, and Freud are hardly touched on and their theories are under-summarized. There is also a lack of relevant, current studies in the area of developmental psychology. Most studies are summarized and do not give any usable, substaintial evidence which could be used elsewhere (ex: in papers).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I have taught (and taken) courses in Child Development and Lifespan Development with numerous textbooks, and this was definitely my favorite. The text is exceptionally thorough and includes a balance of theory and application.Relevant research is discussed throughout, in a way that is interesting and engaging and emphasizes the importance of scientific rigor in studying development. Most of all I appreciate the personal, direct voice of the text, as if I am listening to the author talk. Some other texts actually make reading about lifespan development boring (hard to do but can be done!)This one very effectively illuminates how fascinating it can be.My only criticism might be that I found it very difficult to cover the entire text in a one semester class, precisely because it is so rich in information. ...
