3-0 out of 5 stars surface but instructive
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great aid for clinicains.
If you work with adolescent this is a great aid to writing treatment plans for a beginner or a skilled clinician. It makes following this state regulations a lot easier.I would definitely recommend this book to all my colleagues. This book has helped me write treatment plans quicker and easier then I ever thought possible.I love this series of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for the busy clinician
I work in a mental health agency as an intake clinician, interviewing families and children and writing assessments to be used for case disposition and treatment planning.I see 4-6 families weekly and my work load has been eased enormously with this addition to my library. It sits right next to my DSM-IV and I use it daily. The language for long term goals and therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and there are a number of options in each to tailor for specific cases. ... Editorial Review

There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girls Need To Make Peace With Conflict
I found this book, "Odd Girl Out," not only helpful but also cathartic. It answered a lot of current questions I have about raising an adolescent daughter by enabling me to go back and visit my own youth and remind me of my own experiences. This book illustrates how easy it is for mothers raising daughters to live vicariously through them and see how it brings out old fears and insecurities. It was a re-education.
4-0 out of 5 stars Part of the Puzzle, Read It, but Don't Stop Here
You know, this is actually a topic that is near and dear for my heart and it did have a lot of interesting examples and data...but like Fast Girls before it, this reads a lot like someone's research paper and doesn't really delve too far into the history of aggression (in boys or girls) beyond a barest basics that most people probably already know.Simmons also doesn't offer any statistics, she mentions repeatedly that there really isn't any research on this, but I felt like this was just a big book length article that focused on her own personal fascination with the topic and the scope of the book really doesn't go much beyond her own group of interviewees.I was also kind of annoyed by the great deal of repeated information, it's as if in the absence of statistical data to support her theory she just keeps saying the same thing over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dads and Educators ALSO Need to READ This Book!!!
The book opened my eyes into a girls' world I'd never realized existed. A father, I got the book to understand the social dynamics my daughter navigates. It's like a gardner suddenly discovering that flowers have aromas, weeds have deep roots, and roses have thorns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help for Parents and Therapists
Very helpful for therapists and parents who want to use the Collaborative Problem Approach with explosive kids.Using plenty of examples and scripts, Drs. Green and Ablon help to walk people through the approach, through common pitfalls, and provide guidance and support for therapists working with families.A must-read for every family therapist and teacher who has ever worked with an explosive child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating a better world
I am reading "Treating the Explosive Child" and simply cannot put this book down - if everyone incorporated this approach into everyday life, what a humane world it could be.Thank you, Dr Ablon and Green for the expertise you are sharing and disseminating to the world - in my eyes, you are true heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an answer
Ever since my child was about 4 I have been wondering what he "had"....what his behavioral issues were all about.Three therapists later, psychological testing, and countless offerings of advice from friends, parents and teachers I have finally found an explanation that rings true and speaks to my husband and me. My son is now 14.How I wish I had known about this "CPS approach" years ago. The approach is not "Magic 123" (and therefore simplistic) but if it's followed, it works.I first read Dr. Greene's other book aimed at parents called "The Explosive Child" which is also wonderful."Treating Explosive Kids" is directed at therapists and is therefore more dense and a little more difficult to understand for the lay person but the book is filled with dialogue between professionals, parents, and kids which brilliantly and realistically illustrates how to treat a child who is inflexible, explosive, and therefore incredibly frustrating.Guess what:these kids are not simply being manipulative or looking for attention. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Question your assumptions and challenge what you think you know
This book provides a well-organized survey of issues that limit our reasoning abilities:
3-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Better Than It Was
Gilovich starts this book of with a real bang! After reading the Introduction, I thought this book would be really interesting and change the way I look at the world. He writes in a college-teacher tone that will not be approachable to those he most needs to reach. In other words, I really don't need a book to tell me to avoid holistic cretins, ESP, psychics, mysticism, and all that other garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required for all psychology students!!!
This book is a contemporary classic that should be required reading in all psychology programs. As a psychologist, I am regularly appalled by how few trained psychologists know of the research discussed in this book, indeed, of decision science in general!! It only goes to show, there's scientific psychology (of which this book qualifies), and then, well, there's the other 99%...the crap, fluff, unsupported, unscientific, claims and practices that arise out of pseudo-scientific approaches, misinterpretations of data, and fallacious assumptions and conclusions. As an exemplar of what's good in a field rife with methodological manure and hocus pocus B.S. (e.g. psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc.), this book really shines. Read it and discover why some of psychology really is a science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Therapist's notebook for children and adolescents
This great book is for the therapist working with children and adolescents, where the therapist can use the material as homework, handouts and activities in therapy. The editors, Catherine Ford Sori, professor of psychology and counseling at Governors State University, Illinois and Lorna L Hecker, professor of marriage and family therapy at Purdue University in Indiana, have together with 36 professionals compiled a very important tool for the therapist.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it zero stars if I could
I understand that the typical Psychology Book is not exactly a riveting novel, but good god, this was way too much.I have never been more annoyed with a text book- I would never voluntarily have read this garbage! She would have had a much shorter book if we weren't forcefed her life story at every possible chance she could insert it in.This woman is very full of herself...very full. There were a lot of typos, a lot of redundent sentences, and a lot of crap we didn't need!I hope for the rest of the psychology students of the world that this author reads these reviews and vows never to write another text book again. If I ever have a class that requires another text book by her, I will drop without hesitation! And change majors the next morning!

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRABLE
In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Increasing understanding of Aging
Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. That may be expected in the field of psychology, however. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BP in children definitely exists
I didn't have to read the book to know that BP can be a correct diagnosis in children.During my childhood I had intense emotions and fluidity of thoughts.Standardized tests could not measure creativity in science -- I blew them away.History; forget it.Regardless, the same emotion and thought issues that existed throughout childhood translated to adulthood.Anger became extreme and dangerous in adulthood. This is when I extensively researched psychiatric diagnoses and discovered that BP fit me perfectly.Kay Jamisons book confirmed my research. Many years and much medication later, I'm more normal than normal people.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first resource I recommend to parents of newly dxd kids
As I was reading this book, I wondered how the authors were able to witness what was going on in my family. It was like they were flies on the wall - they described my family to a T.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bi-polar Child hard cover book review
This book was exactly as described. It was informative and yet not too medically explicit that I couldn't understand the information being explained. It also held a lot of examples from real families which was also helpful and made me feel like this wasn't just a medical book, it was a tool to help me understand that my child wasn't alone in the world which was comforting to know.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Explanation and Illustration.
Where I work, we are close to the point in which we will be implementing the Response to Intervention model for determining learning disabled and emotionally disturbed student eligibility. This necessitated my pouring over this book a few times in the last few weeks. I have to recommend it strongly as it would be difficult to imagine a more thorough work concerning this very new subject. Its historical discussion of special education and learning disabilities was excellent as was the authors' review of recent laws and legislation. The authors' description of the ineptitude of the discrepancy model is compelling even for those of us who never endured zoo staffings which were often its inevitable result. For those of us in the field, there are endless forms and figures on these pages which can be used as inspiration behind the forms accompanying our district's transition; although, RTI adoption clearly isn't just a matter of forms. The most exciting aspect is that it will give us an opportunity to develop a new aspect to one's game. Now, we'll utilize scientifically based interventions and be able to initiate them while recording the results. The authors even offer a template for a novel psychological report based upon Response to Intervention. Their creativity and thoroughness was a pleasant surprise.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.
