3-0 out of 5 stars Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
No need for letting a baby cry.Lots of need for structered naps. Why not look a little at nutrition and a little at spirituality? The "Dr." comes from a "doctor's" point of view. Native Americans used cradleboards that rocked the child naturally to sleep while suspended from a branch.Sounds archaic. Some new-agers use essential oils and diffuse "Gentle Baby" or "Peace and Calming." I read, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and learned about the body, mind, and spirit of my children. They all sleep now, and so do I.I wish the doctors that write these books, Weisbuth especially, would do a little research they profess to be good at, and learn a more holistic approach to children's health, and for that matter, ours.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source available on the subject
Dr. Weisbluth's book was lent to me by a friend just as my daughter was turning 5 1/2 months old. She had changed from a great sleeper to miserable and I couldn't figure out why. I had said from the beginning that I would never let my child "cry it out" and I resisted when people mentioned this book because I was concerned that I would have to do just that. But, after reading his book cover to cover I learned Dr. Weisbluth's book doesn't focus on letting your child cry. He explains when and why you should put your child down to sleep and addresses the emotions parents feel if their child does cry for any length of time. After reading this book I discovered my daughter was overtired and once I started following the nap guidelines her bedtime went from crying and screaming to quietly laying down ech night. Do not let people scare you with the "crying it out" part - as I said Dr. Weissbluth's book addresses much more and I'm so happy that we decided to try his techniques. If you are having a difficult time with naptime or bedtime I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life-Span Human Development
I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tired Read
Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Choppy, and incredibly dry
I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job.The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much.Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc..On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting.Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly.Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected as Advertised
I ordered this book after reading the rave reviews and the who's who of public school using this format.Nowhere is it advertised or even mentioned that this is a Christian book, espousing Christian dogma and assumptions.I'm surprised this is acceptable for use by Government funded public schools.Furthermore, there is a lot of non-scientific rhetoric in the book that eschews logical debate and exposition.I'm very disappointed and consider this to be false advertising.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works For A Mom Of 8
I have 8 kids, ages 1 though 18.I read this book 6 years ago when I was dealing with 2 year old twins and found it to be very helpful. Since then I have recommended it to many people.Anything that can help mom stay calm and sane when dealing with challenging behaviors is a real winner in my book!

Richard Louv's message of hope - for change and for a greater future - may be the key to keeping us all sane for generations to come.
1-0 out of 5 stars silly nostalsgic nonsense
Having spent most of my adult life working in the non-profit conservation field, and as a parent, and as someone who had the good fortune to spend lots of time in nature as a child, I read this book in the hopes of learning important things. That turned out to be a forlorn hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Borderline Mothers
This is the best book by far for anyone whose mother has borderline personality disorder. It is a book specific to this relationship whereas other books on the market try to cover spousal borderline relationships, etc. as well as parent-child and miss the depth found in this book. This is a must-read for adult children of borderlines -and it's not necessarily an easy go. The author has pegged situations/emotions with uncanny accuracy and puts words to what I personally could never accurately describe to an "outsider". Thankfully I have siblings and all of us have stuck together like glue over the years. I could never imagine an only child having to handle what we did. That's what makes this book so powerful -it is a voice, an explanation, a validation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very powerful and nothing short of amazing.
I am ETERNALLY appreciative and thankful to Dr. Lawson and her bold compassion. Until this book came along, the secret life of children born to such parents/caregivers remained silent, misunderstood, disregarded, unexposed, and considered surreal or unimaginable. Any words I choose to include here could not possibly illustrate how intensely grateful I am to the author for writing this book. This book has done more for me than words could EVER express, and after reading it I felt understood, and most importantly, whole.
5-0 out of 5 stars True understanding at last.
For anyone with friends or family members who suffer from borderline personality disorder themselves or have borderline parents, this book is an absolutely invaluable source of insight and information. You'll feel a lot less alone dealing with the bewildering world of the borderline personality, and the book offers a very helpful section about the practicalities of dealing with the borderline people in your life. Written with grace and a sort of Jungian-archetype framework, the book is readable but precise, mythic but spot on. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO WORDY, NEEDS to be MORE CONCISE
this book has good information but not much of an attention getter at all, needs to be straight to the point and have pics orcharts that will be detailed but grabs you attention! It is an okay book over all but not so great when comes to actually studying for an exam...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Service
I was very impressed with how quickly I received my book.It was in great condition.I would definately order from him again.

4-0 out of 5 stars LIfe -Span Development
The book is easy to read. The author does not assume that you have prior knowledge about development stages and theories that accompany the stages. The author also adds real life examples of how these stages may look in life in many different cultures. The chapters build on each other. The author does a great job of reveiwing key concepts from previous chapters as they relate to the current chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant treatise on how the mind develops by a credible author with good writing skills
The essence of this book is captured in its very first paragraph, "the mind emerges at the interface of interpersonal experience and the structure and function of the brain." It goes on to explain how this is so in the various chapters that cover memory, emotion, construction of reality (via internal representations), states of mind, self regulation, interpersonal connection and integration.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Brain and Attachment
While having contributed to many publications, The Developing Mind is the first of many books to be written by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel.Dr. Siegel and his work entitled Interpersonal Neurobiology integrates a spectrum of perspectives such as the latest scientific, cultural, and psychological research into an understandable language that has the potential to stimulate positive individual healing and collective changes in our society.

5-0 out of 5 stars See Your Son or Your Students Here
The library at the college where I work puts out a list of new books they have purchased in our area once per month, and this book was on the psychology list back in January.I thought it looked interesting and picked it up then, thinking it might have some good things to say about a book I'm writing about men and depression.I finally picked it up and started reading it last week, and finished it in less than a week.I really enjoyed the authors' styles of writing which made some of the technical information more accessible and easier to understand, which to me means it would be a great resource for students studying education and for parents of boys of all ages.
5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's review
More informative than 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently,' 'The Minds of Boys' is a fascinating look into the specific reasons why boys are doing so poorly in school nowadays. Very, very awfulif you did not know - Boys are the overwhelming majority of special education students, are more likely to drop out, and are much less likely to attend college.
4-0 out of 5 stars A needed step forward for boys:
I really sympathize with Michael Gurian.I felt much the same way about the failures of the industrialized education system in the 1950s that he described a couple of decades later. It's set up to fail boys, and has gotten worse over the past several decades as men teachers have been driven out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for novice therapist
I bought this book when I was fresh out of graduate school and starting my first job under supervision. This book has great ideas that are easy, very therapeutic for the children I work with, and also inspiring for coming up with my own creative techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, but Easy
The activities in this book are well organized and simple. Most do require some type of preparation and some materials. Some of the activities use games; others use art therapy, etc. This is an invaluable resource for me in therapy session with children and adolescents. The kids have always been interested in the interventions I have used from this book. This is therapy without the child KNOWING it's therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent
I am a social worker who often works with oppositional and resistant children. This book offers several fresh ideas on interacting and engaging children so that they will begin to talk about their feelings. I have been very impressed with the several activities and have found that they can be applied to children of various ages with very little work. I think this book is a must for anyone who works with children. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Why not just kill your mother?
After hearing good things about the book I had hoped for some insight on how to change the approval seeking patterns developed from living in family where being good worked alot better than being authentic. Instead I got heavy handed criticism of "mothers" who warp their children through thier own selfish motivations. Some people may have parents who were intentionally cruel, but mine were just sad, depressed and inept. I spent so much effort defending them from this author's wrath, and perhaps anger at her own mother, that if there was any insight in this book about on how I might change my patterns of behavior I couldn't see it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating But Extremely Valuable
It is unsurprising that Alice Miller's Drama of the Gifted Child has met with a certain amount of hostility from both the psychiatry and psychotherapy establishments. After all, she frowns both on the use of drugs and cognitive-behavioral techniques as treatments for anxiety--especially in children. She even suggests that those who would use such remedies may have unaddressed psychological problems of their own. What's worse, she appeals to no empirical studies (double-blind or not) in reaching these conclusions; in fact, a reader might be reluctant to conclude from this book that Miller would even be capable of assessing the value of a careful scientific study of this or that anti-anxiety treatment. So, as I've indicated above, this book is often very frustrating. But Miller's work is also quite valuable, at least in my opinion.Like Freud's contemporary Wilhelm Stekel, Miller may not be a systematic theoretician, but her extensive clinical experience has provided her with several important insights that I believe may be useful, particularly to parents of anxious children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Looking back may be only way forward.
"The unexamined life is not worth living" wrote Socrates. If you find yourself on the path of this philosophy a good place to stop is with Alice Miller's short book, "Drama of the Gifted Child".The book, despite being written for therapist's, is unambiguous, easy to understand, and extremely compelling. The book addresses our secret-selves, which includes our subconscious selves, and asks the question, and I paraphrase here, how did you really feel back in the day? Miller contends that a trauma suffered in your young life will continue producing unhappiness, addiction, compulsion, fetishes, mental illness, and worse in your adult life. The only way out of pain is to face the truth. You must face what happened and how you really felt. Not how you were told to feel, not how you needed to feel to survive, not how you told yourself you should feel-- but how you really felt. This is easier read than done. The author states that you cannot undo the past, but through the process of mourning, obtained only by squarely facing the truth, you can free yourself and finally move forward. It is ultimately the story of your psychic pain and psychic redemption.Pain that could not be have been mourned at the point of trauma, and the devastating effects that pain can still be having on your life

4-0 out of 5 stars A Starting Point and for Getting Unstuck
These 'planners' are a great place to start when designing a treatment plan. They are the equivalent of a 'manual' that refreshes memory, assists with language and format- and gets you past the block. Its weaknesses lie in its treatment methods and assessment paradigm.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have a 19 year old son that has been on stimulants since age 5.The stimulants work but we're always searching for a better, easier and cheaper solution. We've tried all types of naturals treatments and biofeedback but they did not work.I was hoping that Lawlis' book offered some new insights into ADD and it's causes and treatment. However, I was disappointed to read the same old suggestions about nutrition, diet, biofeedback, etc.I don't disagree that some people benefit from these treatments but Dr. Lawlis didn't present any new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Parent's Perspective
I have a 14 yo son with ADHD and I've read too many books on the subject. I took my son off all meds a year ago because the cure was becoming worse than the diagnosis and realized that the meds were masking his emotional problems even though he went to Psychciatrists and Psycologists, Pediatric Neurological Behavioralists-the list seemed eternal.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless Drivel !!!
I have been in practice for over 25 years, treating adults and children alike, I have read many books on the subject of ADD and ADHD and frankly I found this book to be full of the same old sham treatments that don't work any better than snake oil.
