4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read to Understand Aikido
For me, this book is very helpful in helping me deal with my everyday conflict in the 'aikido way'. As an Aikido student, almost all the physical techniques I learn in class are mostly suitable for physical `attacks'. This book has `enlightened' me on how to handle non-physical `attacks' (communication, social confrontation, problem handling, etc). Complete understanding of both makes us realized that the aikido concept is almost complete for physical and non-physical `attacks' we face everyday.

5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply meaninful book for me
As an aikido student, I found that this book has brought a new dimension to my practice as well as my ability to handle conflict in personal relationships. It incorporates the principles of aikido in dealing with conflict in relationships.I recommend this book for any aikidoist who wants to enhance his or her practice, or anyone who is interested in learning how to deal with conflict in ways other than fight or flight.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's the journey, not the destination
John Grinder and Judith Delozier provide the reader with a journey through one of their seminars. It wakes you up to your life.Or, more accurately, it can.I have read almost every NLP in print and pretty much all of the ones out of print.I hold certifications in NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis as well a my Unversity education as an anthropologist.I found this book a bit of a stretch for my vocabulary, and a wonderful journey through a series of highly transformative experiences.Read it with your mind open and do the drills and you will find your life changing.

1-0 out of 5 stars school cafeteria left-overs at a steak-house price
First, let me say I own most of the NLP books and highly esteem John Grinder & Richard Bandler. NLP is amazing stuff. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN, on the other-hand, is, to use a re-frame, left-overs from the NLP School Cafeteria with a steak-house price. This one is going into the garbage where school cafeteria swill belongs. Don't waste your time or your money on it. Buy the other NLP books! This one won't make you a champ, and you won't feel like a chump.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impeccable Internal Organizational Patterning
Turtles is a book for people already exposed in some degree to the basic tenets of NLP.It is not "about" NLP, but how to create logical structures and frameworks within yourself to employ these (and other) tools in a most effective and ecological manner.A great deal of emphasis is placed on applying the right energy to the right "logical level". Often, people are making the right move in a situation, but applying that move to the wrong logical level. This book is about identifying logical levels and having an internal structure that allows you to interface at the right time at the right logical level with the right change- the minimum effort that makes the maximum difference.Grinder is a master storyteller given his exceptional background, and he winds the teachings around interesting and compelling stories from his and other fascinating folks' experiences.Worth the read even if you never learned anything about NLP.Grinder's a cool dude! :) ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Becker's theory of everything
This is a book that applies the rationality postulates of neoclassical economics to social sciences other than economics, especially sociology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
Gary Becker is one of the most brilliant economists of our time, especially when it come to applying economics principles to non traditional areas. For example, Becker provides a rationale for altruistic behavior emerging in society, and he studies crime from the the perspective of a market economy of criminal activity. The book is somewhat technical, so a somewhat quantitative background is recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A milestone of new economic thought
This book is definitely a milestone of modern economic thought. It is one of the brightest signs of changing paradigm, from considering only those problems as 'economical' where prices and volumes could be estimated, to gobeyond towards traditional areas of other sciences. Economics of family andof crime to name a few. Becker considers the decision making in these casesto show that it can be straight economical, the same as applied in apricing or in a decision to produce. The judgement of Becker's 'economicimperialism', though, is a discussible point of view. To what extenteconomic reasoning can be applied is a matter of axioms underlying everyeconomic theory. And these are not obvious but questionable instead. Therefore, it is my belief that this book should be read with a greaterdegree of criticism, just like any analysis of problems beyond'traditional' scope of issues of economics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just what is self-esteem?
Just what is self-esteem? Many believe we must have it; but here's a famous psychologist to say it's all a myth, and he bases his contention on the thoughts of some of the finest religious thinkers and philosophers of our times. Instead Albert Ellis in THE MYTH OF SELF-ESTEEM (1591023548 ) explains his Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as an alternative to achieve unconditional self-acceptance, using exercises which promote such acceptance over the more commonly held self-esteem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The mantra of "Self Esteem"
Albert Ellis performs a valuable service with this book. The mantra of "Self Esteem" has indeed become pervasive in today's society, but not due to Dr. Ellis. We are told that some children don't do well in school because they suffer from "low self-esteem," that people commit crimes for the same reason, and that if we can only figure out how to universally raise people's self esteem, all societal problems will vanish.
2-0 out of 5 stars WHAT myth?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and helpful
I loved how James wrote the book, making its readers feel as if they were getting advice from a girlfriend over martinis. In the sea of self-help books, this one takes a comical and fun approach to breaking up and moving on.

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't think it would help
but if you have or are going through a break up that cuts really deep, this book will really help ease some of the things you are feeling and help you feel a little more normal. I remember reading it a saying "holy crap, that is soooo true." Trust me it's just a little step that will help in a big way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Autobiogrphy & Journalling studies
This book by Tristene Rainer is reccommended reading for this U 3 A course and although I have not completed my reading it is very helpful with good advice and pracices to do I would highly reccommend it to anybody beginning a Diary or journalling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Tool
I've kept a journal/diary off and on for over 20 years. The biggest problem I have is that I have been stuck in the little locked book/calendar frame of mind with my journal. Tristine Rainer gives her readers some really great tools to break out of that thought pattern. Before reading this I didn't fully realize that I was in this pattern of self-editing/self-consciousness with pretty much all of my journal writing. It really held me back. Instead of not having enough to say, not thinking that my life is interesting enough to track on a regular basis, I now feel freed to explore my inner life. The combination of encouragement and practical tools to do this make it an invaluable book for the journaler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
After keeping a journal for the better part of the last decade, it had started to lose its lustre for me and at times even felt chorish.I felt I had nothing to write about and was guilty for no longer writing.

The text is the same. However, when compared to the student's edition, the instructor's edition is missing a lot of extras (sample tests, study hints, etc.)Those can be found on the website, but not in the book.In the student's edition, the extras take up about 200 pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best psychology books I've ever read!
I don't know if this is going to reflect on the quality of the psychology book, or the caliber of books I have read and reviewed, but I must say, this introductory psychology book is one of the best I've ever seen.Theexamples capture the reader and are used in an intelligent way todemonstrate the major points of each chapter. And I was never bored oncewith this book, which is a big plus.A great book for an intro to psychclass!

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychology for poets

5-0 out of 5 stars look at your shadows
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helps understand anxiety
I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this book is.I especially appreciated the author's use of family systems theory to show how a person can recognize & interupt ineffective patterns of anxious communication within social groups, both at home & at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars No psycho-babble spoken here
The Dance of Fear is the book formerly known as Fear and Other Uninvited Guests. The name change most likely came as the result of author Harriet Lerner's other Dance book titles - Dance of Anger, Dance of Intimacy, Dance of Deception and so on.

2-0 out of 5 stars With interersting ideas but lack of depth
I read the amazon reader reviews before I bought the book. Yet I must admit that I am a bit disappointed with the purchase. The principles in the book about dream making is nothing new at all. The book tries to relate aconcept of 'ease' with a life working towards your dream. But it is notvery convincing to me. And the 5-step process on finding your dream is atypical method that can be found in many other self-help books.

I've read lots of self-help books, especially on self-discovery, time management etc. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Helps you *enjoy* making your dreams come true
I am re-reading portions of this book. Marcia Wieder's "Doing Less and Having More" is really inspirational. In my work as a speaker, author and motion picture director, I continually read books, and Marcia'sbook is *unique* and helps me develop ease for making my big dreams cometrue and finishing my film, "LIVING, the motion picture." I foundMarcia's book so valuable that I read every word. I have seen Marcia give aworkshop, and she's dynamic and uplifting -- in person. Her message is sopowerful that I'm reading her new book, "Making Your Dreams ComeTrue." Watch for her PBS special television program. ... Read more

'Asserting Yourself: A Practical Guide for Positive Change' is the ideal gift for anyone who lacks confidence. I read the book and greatly enjoyed it, but as I have charisma, potency and a well-developed sense of 'self', it was not immediately applicable to my situation. 1-0 out of 5 stars When pleasing others is hurting you
If your not co-dependant before you read this book, you will be after. This book leads you to think one thing and then hits you with another at the last minute. This book will force you to seek counseling after you read it. I thought the book would be about helping me understand what to do when I feel certain feelings when others hurt me, but it's nothing like that at all. Advoid this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is incredible!
Until this book I didnt even realize I was a people pleaser, just knew the back cover had some substance and points for my life. Then I bought it and read it and it changed my life! I went from worrying over everything and everyone. Worrying over how others felt even if I was right to stand up for myself to being a stronger woman. Men really will fill the voids in our emotional life! This book teaches you where you learned it, what caused it and how to eliminate the issues. Go Women! And it said some MEN are people pleasers too! Just about every emotional issue I had was linked some way to this! I feel great now! Most importantly, I understand completely.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Pleasing Others is Hurting You
I recently found out (at age 46) I am codependent. This has shaken my world. This book was extremely helpful. It gives a thorough description of the symptoms of codependency and why it develops. Italso gives the reader hope that life can (and will) be different in the future. I especially appreciated the Christian viewpoint and the fact that it didn't assume an alcoholic problem in the family is the cause. Many other situations can cause a child to grow up codependent. It is very readable and other members of the family who live with the codependent will benefit from reading it as well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a few good things
There are a few good points made in here. But I'm appalled at how many pages he gives to the basic idea of mentally joining opposites, so one seesthe world more holistically. A decent point. But he says, "You shouldnot see things as feminine or masculine," and expands on that. And helists all these opposites, one by one, page after page, that you should seeas one. He could basically have said in two pages "See the world asyin and yang" like the Taoist symbol, and not belabored it soextensively. The rest of the book has good points. But it is basicallywatered-down Abraham Maslow, from his book, TOWARD A PSYCHOLOGY OF BEING.Maslow says it better in that book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An uncomplicated, completely honest, guide to living.
Dr. Dyer first puts into words, the reasons why you set limits on anything you want or need to do. He then, through examples in nature, physics, and common sense, makes the most valid arguments as to why ANYONE can remove those limits, and not only achieve, but grow. The book is not religious, but it is spiritual in an almost cosmic sense. Beware, this book may cause you to change the way you live and look at life, in a way that most people only dream of. ... This book is the answer to every person on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum's prayer.People with Asperger's are empowered with knowledge of what this neurobiological condition entails and how to act as their own advocates. For people on the a/A spectrum, please make this book your best friend. It will certainly pave the way down the Long & Winding Road to social acceptance.
5-0 out of 5 stars HELPFUL and UNIQUE
This is a one-of-a-kind resource that educators (and so many others) will find very helpful. The subject of disclosure (how, when, where, who) is not commonly covered in other texts on autism and disability-- even though it is so important.Educators and other support people will learn so much from the voices of these individuals on the spectrum. My favorite chapter is Stephen Shore's (author of Beyond the Wall) piece on how students with disabilities can participate in their own educational programs- it is such a practical AND a thoughtful chapter.Shore gives dozens of great examples of how even the youngest child can serve as an agent in his/her own life and education.Thumbs WAY up on this unique and helpful text! ...
