The authors have selected an outstanding mix of contributors, eachrecognized as experts and authorities in the field. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Gary Klein studies decision-making in the field, tagging along with firefighters, standing by in intensive-care units, and watching chess masters play lightning-fast "blitz" games to learn how people make choices with time constraints, limited information, and changing goals. From this research, he and his associates have developed a theory of "naturalistic decision-making."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars-Intuition comes from experience
Gary Klein has written a very good book on decision making in the real world that I recommend be purchased. His major point is that the vast majority of decisions people make are not based on the deductive rationality model of neoclassical economics.Such a decision making approach requires far too much relevant, reliable information and far,far too much time. The neoclassical model can't satisfythe time and information constraints that are operational in real world decision making processes.Klein argues persuasively that ,based on the empirical and experimental evidence carried out by many psychologists over the last 35 years, most decisions are based on pattern recognition:"This is one basis for what we call intuition:recognizing things without knowing how we do the recognizing...My claim in this chapter is that intuition grows out of experience...we can say that at least some aspects of intuition come from the ability to use experience to recognize situations and know how to handle them..."(Klein,pp.33-34).The reason I did not give this book five stars is that Klein appears to be completely ignorant of the nearly identical definition of intuition ,and its role in decision making, emphasized by J M Keynes in his 1921 " A Treatise on Probability "and his 1936 " The General Theory....".Keynes's understanding of the importance of intuition in decision making has been badly butchered by economists like R.O'Donnell,Bradley Bateman, and Roger Backhouse ,who identify Keynes's views on intuition with either (a) a priori thinking,(b)the "grey, woolly, fuzzy, monster" in one's head or (c)metaphysical vision.Keynes's seminal understanding of the importance of inductive reasoning ,argument from analogy, and pattern recognition are reproduced more effectively in Klein's book.Klein also recognizes that intuition may lead to the wrong answer. However,it is a self correcting process over time.Keynes would have agreed completely.Familiarity with the literature surrounding D.Ellsberg's concept of ambiguity would have also strengthened Klein's conclusions because an intuitive approach works better in decision contexts where the information and knowledge base is incomplete, unclear and ambiguous. The rational-deductive approach works, then,in thelimit in the case of information that is not complex and is total, complete, and clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars even high schoolers loved this book ...
... because it affirms the way they believe they think and act.. at least that is what they told me when I proposed Gary's book to five classes of senior (restless minds) then had lively discussions with them through which I found that most had, indeed, read it... and as they get older, with more experience under their belts, they may need to be reminded of these tools. Also read Howard Raiffa, (e'st al) book, Smart Decisionmaking. - Kare Anderson, SmartPartnering

5-0 out of 5 stars Recognition primed decisions
The book tries to characterize 'time critical decision making processes' .The author went out and interviewed guys leading firemen into burning houses, medics saving people in shock, soldiers deciding to fire a missle at an unknown airplane (fighter or commercial jet?), etc. When he started, he expected to find experts using the rational choice model. In this model, the decision maker collects data, then identifies 2 or more options, and picks the best. This was the academic model.Once in the field, he found none of the experts using 'rational choice'.Instead, they simply took a look at the situation, imagined what would happen if they acted on their first impulse. If the 'imagined future' looked acceptable, they would act.If the imagined future produced a disaster, they abandoned the line of thought and let another concept emerge from their subconscious. This new idea would be subjected to the same visual process. It was something like conjuring up a movie about what would happen. If they didn't like the movie that their subconscious provided, they trashed it and called up a second. The whole process was very fast.At no point was there a 'choice' between 'a' and 'b'.There was only 'will it work', yes or no. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonders for my daughter
I got this book from the library for my daughter. It did wonders for her after her boyfriend of 3 years broke up with her without warning. She had lost weight, was going to a counselor, her grades suffered, and she couldn't stop crying. This book helped her more than anything else. She's a very visual person and the book gave her visual exercises to do; and also practical things to do like changing your habits or changing the furniture around. She showed it to the counselor she was going to at college and the counselor liked it so much, she bought it to keep for other students to look at.I had to bring the book back to the library, but my daughter wanted to have a copy of her own, so here I am at Amazon getting her her own copy. This is a great book for anyone going through heartbreak or for anyone who wants to help someone in that situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally , REAL help
OK the wallowing in misery, self-pity, and denial is SO over. How I loved this book!I have been struggling mightily in a heartbreaking relationship with a really cold man - thinking he was something else, and thinking there were real feelings and a soul in there if I could only peel that onion back one more layer. It just got worse and worse until I hated myself as much or more as I hated him. Obsession, compulsive behavior, self-torture - what a waste of time and life! And who wants to win the "I hate you more" contest anyway?Hate is the worst! Over the years I think I've read every single "breakup recovery" books, some more helpful than others - but most of them have the same advice."Rally your girlfriends, stay busy, excercise more, know it will eventually get better!" Yeah, whatever. The advice helps, but it really just distracts you from the pain, rather than helping you truly heal and throw out the pain for good. What's cool about this book is how it provides tools and excercises (I know, but these are really good tools and exercises.) you can use immediately, anywhere / anytime to change the way you feel and see your situation through visualization and self-hypnosis. It also had very keen insight into human behavior - both yours and others. If you're ready to pick yourself up and really move on, this is the one I would recommend.Good luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Practical Guide
This is a practical guide for contemporary students who are entering the work force or moving up in their careers and who can use a basic understanding of modern psychological theory to guide interpersonal behaviors for greater success. It describes the overall perspective modern psychological theory provides. There is some historical presentation of post-Kantian psychological schools and personality theories but above all these are presented with an aim to guide behavior in ways most likely to lead to success. Sections focus on work-related attitudes, problem solving including group problem solving and using psychological theory to improve communication. This book helps students understand how contemporary theory enables greater autonomy through understanding how motivation can be controlled by others allowing individuals more control over their own motivation. All of this leads to greater wellness and cooperation in the workplace and in life. It includes a great glossary of terms and practical learning activities that help connect the chapters to individual experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of its kind.
I recently came across the title as cited by several different people as a book that was important in their life, and I'm grateful that I did. It encompasses all of the ideas expressed in many other books of its type, however it doesn't leave anything out, while addressing each topic in a succinct way. It is not new, and a few of the examples given will be dated. That doesn't lessen it's messages in anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth every cent
Written around 50 years ago this book still holds true. It is incredibly easy to read and will help your gear your mind towards success. Like most 'success' based books the concepts in here won't make your jaw drop in shock and awe as they are all essentially pretty simple - Think Success and Gain Success. The belief in your ability to achieve something is the first and most important step towards success. Believing you can, will spur your mind to support your belief with reasons, it will find a HOW so you can achieve your goal. Conversely, if you believe you can't, your mind will find reasons to support your claim,

Editorial Review

Arguably one of the most profoundly important essays ever written on the nature and significance of "quality" and definitely a necessary anodyne to the consequences of a modern worldpathologically obsessed with quantity.Although set as a story of a cross-country trip on a motorcycle by a father and son, it is more nearly a journey through 2,000 years of Western philosophy. For some people, this has been a trulylife-changing book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good philosophy book
If you are looking for a new and SUBSTANTIATED philosophical view, this is not the right book. An excellent work of fiction, great writing, yes, these you will find in this book -- but not a strong philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Walden" Meets "Easy Rider"
Anyone with moderate intelligence and sufficient leisure can work out their own private philosophy. The worth of such a philosophy should not be measured by comparison to the great philosophers of the past (or present); rather we should ask how well does it assist its creator in coping with life. Some personal philosophies are crafted in such a way that they help, not just their creator, but large numbers of their creator's fellow beings. Thus it is with the personal philosophy of Robert M. Pirsig, who laments that he has not had an original thought in years.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is worth rereadng several times
I read this book several times over the years and each time I get something new out of it. I'm a Christian and though this book derives some of its underpinnings from Eastern philosopy, the book gives a great overview of Western civilization. How the book uses geography, the personal relationships, his past history, and Greek and Eastern philosophy to prove his thesis is fascinating. The book has problems. The main character does not follow his own philosophy in some ways. Pirsig makes too broad of generalizations about the Greek philosophers. Phaedrus's experience at the University of Chicago does not ring true to me. However, the book challenges the reader to think, to ponder life in general and contemplate on how the branches of knowledge tie together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible connection of BMS
As an integrative therapist, I see these connections all the time. The chakra/thought/physical/emotional connections in what we hold and what then holds us.This book is a wonderful read, easy and engrossing with great information about the authors' own experience.I thoroughly recommend it to my students and to those interested in learning more about how the bodymind connection works in order to look deeper at who they are and are becoming.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended book!Fascinating!
If you ever wonder what kind of body type you have and what baggage comes with that profile, go grab this book up! It explains the thoughts that create some of the most common ailments that modern people walk around withnow. If you wonder about what causes you to have a broad chest and skinnylegs, this is the book for you. If you have any part in the healing artfield, this book is essential for your library. Enjoy it, be surelysatisfied and fascinated all in one sitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
I purchased the mass-market edition of this book about 20 years ago (it is copyrighted 1977), but I never got around to reading it. I did start in on it and I always remembered the story that he starts the book with. The author (a psychologist and gerontologist)is standing naked before a groupof people in some type of encounter session and after having him walkaround a bit, a Dr. John Pierrakos proceeds to tell him all kinds of thingsabout himself that Pierrakos should not have been able to know. He was ableto read all kinds of things about a person just by observing the patternsof tension in their body. More recently I picked up a new copy and read thewhole book. I have read a lot on the subjects of yoga, meditation, bodywork, physical fitness, psychology, etc. and this is one of the mostinteresting books I have come across. The main point is that our minds andbodies can't really be separated. Our bodies can store tension. This can becaused by physical, emotional, mental or spiritual factors and usually oncethe tension goes in it doesn't come out (and can cause all kinds ofphysical problems). This is something I know a lot about, as I have spentdecades working to understand and release my own deep physical tension.Currently I have been practicing yoga (ashtanga yoga) and this is the bestthing I have found yet. There are many other approaches. But I find thatvery few people who should understand physical tension (yoga teachers, doctors, bodyworkers, even some Rolfers) really do understand thesubject. And I have never found this subject to be explained clearlyanywhere - except in this book. The chapters are organized around thesections of the body and are full of stories and examples from the author'sexperiences in working on himself and working with others. He integratesideas from Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, Fritz Perls, Wilhelm Reich and manyother pioneers. After reading the book, I was at first sad that the authorhas not continued to write on this topic, but then I realized that he hasalready written the definitive book on the subject. And although it coversa lot of deep territory the book is very easy to read. Definitely aclassic. Most highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I doubled my income this past year following this advice!
While there is much new information in this book, what hit me on the head like abaseball bat was all of the things that I already new but wasn't doing and never made them habits. It's not what you know, it's what you use. Tracy has a way of hammering this.
2-0 out of 5 stars Occasionally Good Financial Advice Clouded with Torpid Philosophical Generalizations
I understand why many reviewers liked the book a lot.It confirms many people's suspicions that if they change their habits that they will be happier and richer. This is true, but if that is true, one need not spend $17 on this book to get at most 4 tidbits about saving and challenging the way you think about money. He tells us to write a list of goals, start shaving off 10% of our paycheck off the bat, count all money spent, and to abide by the 80/10 rule that 80% of your results come from 20% of your work (e.g. at your job, family, life). These are great motos, but I would advice Mr. Tracy from giving philosophical advice about how our life energy is in jeopardy. I went to this book to get financial advice, if you are interested in real life changing advice for your life by way of habits check out "The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" by Thich Naht Hahn. He is the expert in that department. In the end, Brian Tracy's book is marginally beneficial, but if you really want to start implimenting it do not waste money on this book buying it new.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Challenging Way to Live!
"Achieve the goal of Constructive Living - to do everything well," says the book cover. Sounds impossible! In fact, the goal might be better phrased "to do everything with full awareness." That's what Reynolds espouses in this deceptively simple and extremely useful book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An oasis of sanity and reality in a confused world
I first came across "Constructive Living" in an audio catalog -- it stood out among the self-help and spirituality offerings for its practical, straightforward title. His book(s) and work have had a major influence in my perception of reality. In a world of confused and suffering people looking for ways to feel better, Dr. Reynolds offers "reality's reminders" that we have more control over our behaviors than we have over arising feelings or passing thoughts -- and that it may be more realistic to focus on behaving in a grateful, kind, positive way rather than waiting to have those feelings first. In this, his first book, he offers many such reminders that help us see ourselves, our relationships, and our world more clearly. One of the most helpful, sane, and realistic books I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple, Effective Guide to Life
This is one of the most effective self-help books ever written. David K.Reynolds offers practical, simple, wise advice to people who have lost their way in this complex world. He advises his readers to accept their feelings, but to take the necessary actions to take charge of their lives. Dr. Reynolds write in a clear voice that eschews unnecessary psychological terms and victimization. He advise that the reader to take charge of his/her own life by facing reality and taking action. This is a practical, valuable guide to overcoming emotional trauma and the inevitable obstacles everyone faces in the course of everyday living. It is a rare book written by a wise man. I have given several copies of it to friends in distress and they have also praised its value. Dr. Reynolds has written a small book with heaps of wisdom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best depression help book ever! And for $6 used!?!?! BYE BYE WELLBUTRIN!!!!!
Wow! OK, let me get this straight.I have been majorly depressed for the past 9 years, and I'm 29.So, you see...the best part of my life was gone.I tried almost everything there was to try, and of couse nothing really worked. Some may have worked for a little bit and the depression came back even stronger soon after. I read books and messageboards to keep up to date about ways people have tried and worked for them.Nope, nothing did anything worth mentioning. And the meds (Paxil and Wellbutrin) actually made me not care about anything. True I felt less depressed, but I was like a zombie who couldn't feel anything or express emotions and feelings. My short term memory and cognitive skills were reduced to nothing while on these meds, so that actually made me more depressed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful dietary information
This book makes a good reference for the different uses of amino acids that can help depression. It also details the different types of depression so you can find your symptoms and individualize your treatment. The dietary information is sound.A well written how-to that will help a lot of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars it worked for me!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great.
I would have saved a lot of time if I had just gotten the list of the mistakes (both career wise & money wise) and read them myself. Even though the mistakes are a good reminder, they were not groundbreaking. Pay attention that this is the "abridged version" which may be the reason why I did not care much for the fluff that came along with each mistake. The mistake, in itself, was self-explanatory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Girls Don't Get Rich
Am I an "ostrich" or an "abdicator?" That's the question I asked myself while reading Nice Girls...!These are just two types of women w/whom you may or may not identify who are foundering in dire financial straits, or, at the least, not reaching their financial potential for behaving like "nice girls."Following each case scenario, coaching tips are offered to prevent or stop us from falling into female behavior traps that are financially crippling. Each tip is in bulletpoint format making the info easily accessible for reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound program that's easy to understand
Dr. Luciani has written an amazing program that enables the reader to create the life they want.
5-0 out of 5 stars Letting Go Through Self-Coaching.
A recent review of this book prompted me to add my two cents. I have read Dr. Luciani's book and feel that his techniques are truly unique and unlike any other self-help book I have read. I would definitely say that Dr. Luciani's approach is cognitive (more similar to Dr. Ahraham Low's seminal work than other CBT authors), however, I have no problem agreeing with the author when he says his insights were more intuitive, growing from his twenty-five years of work with his patients. Dr. Luciani's most significant contribution is his central, orienting thesis of control. From developmental roots of insecurity, there is an impetus to compensate through various controlling strategies (which, overtime become habits such as, worry, perfectionism, etc.). To me, this is truly a novel way of viewing struggle. Using this concept (along with the Self-Talk technique in the book), I have been able to dismantle a lifelong inclination toward worry, rumination, and anxiety. Trying to control life made it impossible for me to trust life or myself...until now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Informative and Funny
I am a compulsive liar. I admit it. I read this book and now I have greater insight into why I lie all of the time. A great read even if you are "honest."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and general treatment of practice of deceipt
A certain dry humour makes the book very readable. The description of social pressures in learning to lie, and animal world comparisons, are a useful perspective. The central theme - the danger of lying to oneself,or self deception - is of great importance in working in any largeorganisation. I would prescribe it as essential reading for managers anddirectors of most modern organisations Many readers may lack theobjectivity to appreciate and believe the reports contained in the book, though they are well researched and well documented. I hope the nextedition may spend more time in coping with lies. There are 13 pages in thisbook on therapeutic approaches toward the deceitful person. The commentson "groupthink", which involves bias of group behaviour, couldalso be expanded in future editions, with comments on the efficacy ofcountermeasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ecellent psychological look at lying.
Straightforward.Well written and referenced.A very well laid out book with excellent references for further study on the subject.I gained a great appreciation for the psychological causes of lying.Highlyrecommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Pep Talk
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid pep talk.Keith Harrell gives great advice in an enthusiastic manner. The book is rich with examples from the authors personal experience and those of his friends and associates. It certainly does the trick in inspiring the reader, however the material is primarily a rehash of material found in other books. If it is a new or novel approach to life changing steps that you're looking for you won't find it here, however if you are looking for a nice spark to jump start your personal goals then ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing and easy to use
I have been teaching creative expression and manifestation classes and this book really brings the concepts to reality. Most Kabbalah books are hard to understand and complicated. This one is not! The book is a magical journey and should not be done alone. The miracles are so profound you will want someone doing it with you to share your discoveries. The story telling is wonderful and the activities are clear and insightful. I have read this book 5 times or more and I see something new each time. I was so inspired, started teaching workshops around this topic just to say in community and keep the energy going around wishes and dreams fulfilled. Get a copy for yourself and get a copy for a friend, you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I loved this book and recommend it to anyone. It is the best book that explains the "Tree of Life" .Everyone I recommend this book to loves it. I met the author of the book Gahl Sasson, he is an amazing person, a knows the subject matter like no other. You have to have this book in your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I actually tested this and it works. The book is very easy to read and follow. I tested one wish and it's amazing how the Universe responded to my wish by giving me signs of synchronicities. I really believe we must not ignore those omens if they keep occurring. LIfe wants us to achieve our dreams and wishes and if we really want something, the universe will respond and give it more power if it's made of love, appreciation and gratitude. I am grateful that I found this book. :) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars interesting
This book was interesting enough, but I don't feel that it helped me really understand men going through a mid life crisis.I will still keep it on my bookcase though.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Negative...
Although informative, this book comes from a very negative place. While some men do participate in affairs during their midlife crisis, there are some who don't, as well as those who come to their senses and want to work on their marriages. For those searching for hope, handling the issue with realistic expectations and integrity, I would suugest Jim and Sally Conway's books, "Men in Midlife Crisis" and "Your Husbands Midlife Crisis."
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide through the journey called midlife crisis!
It is unfortunate that so many marriages are falling prey to midlife crisis (if you want to call it that).Point is our disposable society makes it too easy to divorce. This book is a pratical guide to help you traverse this journey. Not only is the book an easy read and very helful in understanding and keeping yourself in check, it really focuses on learning about yourself and not talking blame for your wayward spouses issues. It helps you be a better you!As well, the website listed is a direct link to others suffering the same things. That site has so much information, one could read for days. There is also chat which is helpful and one bonus is that friends can be made to last a lifetime. This book has it all and I implore anyone in the throes of this anxiety called midlife crisis to read this book and then peruse the site for loving and supportive help. It is a truly a gift to know you are not alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand yourself.
In 1904 a little book was written called As a Man Thinketh. This book is a rewriting of that classic by the grandson of the original author. It is not just a self-help book, a self-empowerment, but a truth that will grip your heart. Each of us has tracks that we play in our minds, things spoken over us in our youth, by parents, teachers, coaches and friends. We have believed these things and lived by them. This book reminds us that what we believe in our minds and hearts will live out in our flesh. It will help us understand that all we achieve or fail to achieve is first a perception in our minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Metaphisical Masterpiece
This is a recently published version of the classic volume "As a Man Thinketh" by James Allen. It has been skillfully edited and de-genderized by publisher/author Marc Allen in order to serve as an inspiration for both men and women in our modern times. Throughout the last century, countless individuals have been moved and inspired by this easy to read little primer on the secret of successful living.
4-0 out of 5 stars Politically Correct Version
In this edition of "As a Man Thinketh," Marc Allen (no relation to author James Allen), neuters the male overtones by replacing all references to "man" (which I always interpreted as "humanity," not a male or female) with the more sensitive third person and he/she variations. Somehow the statement "as a man thinketh, so is he," does not translate well to "as a person thinketh, so is she or he."Read more
