3-0 out of 5 stars Sometime psychologists confuse logic with emotions
The book is worth reading and studying for any serious investor. However, the researchers cited assume causality too much. For example, they assume that if an investor sells on gains and holds if a stock has gone down that the investor is afraid to admit defeat. That could be true, or the investor may have a deliberate strategy to "wait out" dips in price until s/he can sell at a gain.Or, the investor could have looked at earnings and business soundness and logically concluded that "Mr. Market" will recognize the higher value of the stock at some point, so why sell now?All of this depends on the strategy you're following, and what your rules of investing are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, straightforward, but good points
Kind of a basic look at behavioral finance. Easy too read, not very long (approx. 110 pgs). Overall a good introduction to the tendenecies people have when investing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book that proves sometimes less is more.
I really liked this book.Nofsinger makes a clear and concise case against the existence of a rational investing "homo economicus", a key assumption of modern portfolio theory. The book is well footnoted and a good place to start learning the underlying tenants of behavioral finance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best self-help book ever!
"Self Analysis" is a book that taught me about the natural laws of living a successful life.Just reading the first section of the book has made me happier, more confident and able to view life as a game to have fun with. Then by doing the exercises in the second section, I became able to solve problems faster and the "game of life" has become a joy to play. This is no book of "psycho-babble". Instead, "Self Analysis" tells you, with engineering precision, about the natural laws of life itself and then proceeds with exercises that permit you to recover your full potential to live life the way you want to.Like the author says: "May you never be the same again!"

5-0 out of 5 stars really creepy but amazing
I was a psychology major in college so I was very skeptical about this book and Dianetics in general. I tried the exercises in this book and they were NOT fun for me at all. The exercises made me feel really creepy and uncomfortable. Sometimes they actually made me feel drowsy and upset. Sometimes the exercises made me feel guilty and scared with a weird kind of dread and anxiety. Despite this I noticed that my memory did improve greatly. On top of that I started feeling happier and more aware of things, more confident too. Something about these excercises helps you to free your mind of bad things that are lurking there and always tugging at your subconscious. I have recommended this book to several friends since then. I have not finished the exercises like the author recommended. Somehow it is still painful to go through them every day but I plan to some day soon. The little time I spent with this book has already helped me a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, Difficult to read
This book provided a solid introduction to community psychology, but it was very difficult to read. Most of this was because of small, dense text and numerous citations. They author used proper APA in-text citations, but they were so lengthy and numerous that you would read one sentence followed by a citation and two more sentences and another lengthy citation. The authors did provide solid examples of real life experience and research results that made the material seem salient and meaningful. This is the first edition and the book has a solid foundation, but I hope the next edition is a bit more user-friendly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Life is Not Determined By What Happens But How We React
After reading Dr. Al Siebert's enlightening book, The Resiliency Advantage, I was reminded of the old adage that was often drummed into me by my parents, that our life is not determined by what happens to us but how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitudes we bring to life. Thinking positively creates a chain reaction pertaining to our thoughts, events and outcomes-a kind of catalyst that can create extraordinary results.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pioneering the Art of Helping People Master Their Challenges
Dr. Al Siebert has been a pioneer in helping people move through difficult life circumstances to master adversity and grow stronger from their challenges. In alignment with the great Abraham Maslow, he has taken the road less traveled in psychology by studying what makes people strong rather than focusing on their weaknesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!
I have had the pleasure of knowing and of benefiting from Dr. Siebert's wisdom for over 25 years, and find that this new book captures the Survivor and Resiliency processes in a suscinct, easy-to-understand manner!Dr. Siebert is a master of using actual "real life" stories about some crucial point, followed by the philosophy, and then the salient practical points to be followed as you work your way toward becoming the Resilient person that you can be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Atheistic Nonsense
This is fine if you're willing to jettison your religion in the name of "maturity" and "finding yourself". It's a shame some people will be taken in by this. The author's approach is not even logical; first she defines the need for faith in something greater than ourselves as an archetype, then dismisses this "archetype" as immature and useless, insisting that this impulse must be denied in order for a person to reach what she calls "maturity".Yet she then insists that our every other impulse and desire must be honored and indulged: sexual desires, career goals, ambition, creative urges, etc.In other words, she has a double standard: on one hand she insists our inner needs and drives must be honored, on the other she claims the drives that lead us to religious expression must be denied. Rather than presenting a truly universal model of psychological development, she holds up her own rejection of fundamentalist protestantism as the epitome of personal growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I had to read this book for a class, otherwise I likelywould never had chosen it. I was extremely pleased with its content, and found that I had experienced all of the archetypal stages in my life in some form or another. My fellow classmates were equally pleased. As a matter of fact, one student in particular went so far as to tatoo the Chinese symbol for the Warrior on his bicep.

5-0 out of 5 stars An educators perspective
From the perspective of an educator who deals with students who range fromyoung adult to fify somethings in a community college setting I found thisan invaluable resource. I feel the work is of immese value as it alwaysrequires that you evaluate your current perspective and superimpose it uponthose your are dealing with. If one can read through this text withoutrepositioning their own parameters it would amazing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura's hope for the a good life after a bad childhood.
The worst pain that disrupts our daily lives, destroys our relationships with loved ones, and keeps us victims is usually buried in a bad childhood. Disappointed, Traumatized, or Tortured when we were too little to fight, by parents or others who were not able to provide the kind of love needed for growth; can leave us with scars that last a lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on a difficult and complex subject
Dr. Laura gives insight and direction on how to move forward rather than stay stuck in the memories and pain of a bad childhood. This book has helped me beyond expression. I especially appreciate her candor at the end of the book, telling about her childhood which wasn't a bed of roses. I listened to this CD twice to carefully take it all in and will probably listen to it again a few months from now. As she indicates, getting over a bad childhood is always a work in progress.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to sit through.
While I like Dr. Laura & think a lot like her I'm afraid she missed the mark with this CD/Book. I've enjoyed most of her other books but didn't find this one particularly helpful or interesting. The CD version of the book basically spends hours telling you to get over your bad childhood & move on. It's rarely that easy. The only part of the book I found intersting was Dr. Laura's synopsis of her bad childhood. I think she should write an autobiography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book brought me relief!
I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified (and ill) in the middle of the night with uncontrollable anxiety weeks before the flight. Just the thought of getting on a plane sent me into an emotional and physical tailspin (pardon the pun). I too, knew that it was irrational, but the fear was so viceral and so out of my control, I finally sought help. A therapist suggested that the anxiety and subsequent vomitting was due to an overdose of adrenaline, and that is about all the help she could offer. I bought this book after reading the other reviews on line. I read it in a day, and over the next three flights I took after reading it, each flight became easier and easier. The last flight I took I genuinely enjoyed and I didn't need to take any anti-anxiety medicine. The book teaches you that the noises you hear a plane make are the noises it *should* be making. I always used to fear that the planes engines were failing upon ascent because you could hear them "loose power." I had no idea the pilots had that much control over the engines and that sometimes, for example, they just need to slow down the planes to comply with neighborhood noise ordinances! The book teaches you about weather conditions, and turbulance, and how planes and pilots have astounding abilities to handle them both. Sure, I still might sometimes (only sometimes) get a little jittery before a flight, but I feel that, like anything else, fear stems from the unknown, and when I educated myself on how planes work and how flying works, my fear went away. This book really, really made a huge difference in my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knuckles No Longer White
Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Whole Lotta Help
Although not an uninteresting exploration of many of the aspects of flying, this book does not seem likely to truly alleviate many of the fears of the uncertain flier. It is one thing to understand the mechanics of flying, but quite another to get detailed descriptions of emergency procedures when something goes wrong. Those of us who suffer or have suffered bouts of unnecessary white-knuckled flying want to know how the plane stays in the air, why it is unlikely that something will go wrong and what all those noises and sensations are that may set us off. We also want to know what is going on in the cockpit during a normal flight, since most of us realize that once we've landed, we've once again experienced a normal flight...There are much better books than this one if you want to conquer any fear of flying....END ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The other day a friend asked me what was the most significant book I had read in my life....THIS IS IT. Smothermon's book is certainly not mainstream, and it contains the most densely packed wisdom of what life is about that I know of. Over the years, I have recomended this book to MANY people, and the feedback is fantastic. Get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsung classic -- Tells it like it IS!
I have read Dr. Smothermon's "Enlightenment" book many times and also pull it down from time to time to savor his dynamic writing style: 2-3 page chapters just sock it to you and move on.To the point. He describes the way the world ( and that includes us ) works and if you pay attention, are patient and read (and re-read) it with an open mindyou will get a lot of great insights to chew on.I've read his other books and they are also good, but this one, for me, is the classic. Thanks Ron!

2-0 out of 5 stars Validates bad customer behavior
This book does help by offering some scripting in dealing with nasty customers. However, as a Customer Service Rep, I am a little offended that abusive customer behavior is validated and excused in this book. No matter what kind of issues you have, it is never acceptable to be abusive to me or anyone else; (and yes, I know this goes both ways) The author seems to think that because a person is upset about something, then it's O.K. to be hateful and that the C.S.R.'s job, part of it anyway, is to be abused with a smile on your face and to make that person happy no matter what. Any service worker knows how very limited your resourses to do this are. In my opinion, because books like this and certain managment styles legitimize this kind of behavior, rudeness and entitlement behavior has poliferated, causing a cycle of bad behavior all around. The book also seems to ignore the fact that some customers have unreasonable demands and that more and more, some customers believe that because they bought something from your company and "Gave you your business and paid your salary..." that they have no personal responsibility what-so-ever and any demand they make should be granted without question. Anyone in customer service (those who have actually been there and have some real experience dealing directly with customers under their belt. I get the impression the author has NEVER dealt with customers, she is, after all of the HUMAN RESOURCE industry, not known for backing employees.)know that oftentimes, "No." = rude for those customers. How do I handle that? Hmmm? One of the quotes that got my ire up was: "Another problem that government workers face is the attitude, "You're working for me. Give me service or else!" Government employees need to accept that this attitude is common and quite understandable".Wrong. Why should anyone have to accept this? It's not reasonable, but again, the book suggests that this kind of behavior should be legitimized. If the person has a reasonable request, then it should be met promptly and with courtesy, but that kind of attitude is NOT something that is acceptable. No person wants to be spoken to and treated like that, as though you are their personal servant. The quote is directly following a paragraph in which the author states that because government has no competiton, that government workers OFTEN, not sometimes, go in with a "ready-made chip on their shoulder." The author seems to be suggesting that service workers should just bow down and humbly serve anyone, no matter what kind of behavior the client exhibits. I personally believe that the suggestion that it's O.K. for clients to behave this way and place all the responsibility on the service rep to deal with these people and do so with a smile on your face and ALWAYS want to make these people happy, is part of the reason why service has gone downhill and why service reps develop an attitude. Who in their right mind would take that kind of attitude, day in, day out and be happy about it? Have you ever wondered WHY misanthropy is so very, very common among service persons? Think about it.It's not O.K. to be rude, ever and I would have like to have seen the author admit to this and not follow the "That is just his/his way" garbage that seems so common from managers these days. It the easiest thing to tell employees, it's your fault that a screeching client upset you. I am fully aware of the claim that we can only control our reactions to these types of individuals, but feel that Corporate America, all of the service industry, really, needs to take some responsibility of stemming the tide of rude entitlement behaviors by not accepting truly bad behavior(as opposed to just UPSET behaviors, there is a difference). I am not sure the author meant for it to be, but the book comes across very pro-customer and anti-employee. I am in awe of the suggestion that people should accept abuse. I believe that this style of managmenthas caused the eruption of rudeness by validating that behavior and it needs to change for it to get better on both sides. Just look at the astronomical turnover in the service industry. If it so hard to keep long-term employees in an industry, it's obvious that that industry is doing something wrong and is due for a change. In order for this book to be five star, it should advise how to address this type of behavior as unacceptable without the employee getting down in the dirt with the person exhibiting that kind of behavior his or herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!!
This book is so chock full of info on dealing with difficult people. It goes beyond the obvious and gets to the root causes of the actions some people take, and how you can best combat them.I would recommend this book for anyone. Not just business persons, but anyone dealing with the public. It can even help with interpersonal relationships.

1-0 out of 5 stars Instant Money for Author
I have to agree with the review called "Instant Boredom."This is an incredibly simplistic book with a painfully repetitive style of presentation. It presents things that are very obvious already to probably 99% of the population, and I felt it was a complete waste of my time and money.
4-0 out of 5 stars Goood Ideas, Tedious Structure
Ms. Puhn offers great suggestions on how to alter your behavior slightly in order to really change people's impression of you.She gives valuable advice about pitfalls we often find ourselves in and useful steps to avoid them. The one drawback to her writing is that she gives long, made-up examples of acting the wrong way. I usually just read the beginning paragraph, then the problem graphic, then skipped to the end where she explains how you can remedy it. That way I got the information without going brain-dead reading countless made-up stories about the wrong way to act. Not really to buy, but great to peruse

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Stories

3-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting strategy, and unfortunately a reality.
The basic premise of the book follows ancient Eastern war tactics dating to 500 BC.A few of these are:"know yourself and your enemy", "plan surprise", and "win without fighting".The book describes various tactics of war that will help an army be successful.4-0 out of 5 stars Not too original
This book is concise and well worth its cheap price. It provides some of Sun Tzu's most thought provoking text and adds the author's analysis. There has been literally hundreds of books related to Sun Tzu's writing and none of the ideas presented in this book are new. The real value of this book comes from the author's selective analysis of some of Sun Tzu's best lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference going to not only read again, but study
After my initial read through of this book, I know I am going to want to not only read it again, but hang on to it so I can study and reference the book. It is nice to have the original Sun Tzu narrative in the first part of the book and the authors modern day observations separated into another section of the book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviews by leading researchers and practitioners
"The issue of how athletes can be assessed as a basis for performance management and enhancement is a crucial one for contemporary sport psychology. More basically, assessment for performance management and enhancement in sport is an area where cogent theory, practical concepts, effective methods, and technically defensible measurement procedures are needed. Roland Carlstedt's seminal work provides valuable information that helps fill these gaps. Based on a solid theoretical model of critical moments during competition, coupled with a clear and internally consistent conceptual and operational framework, and using persuasive empirical research from psychology and other areas, including results of his award winning dissertation, Dr. Carlstedt demonstrates substantial relationships between psychological characteristics and performance outcomes in a range of athletes. His work provides guidance for sport psychology researchers and practitioners as well as others involved in human performance at all levels. "The material in this book can help shape the larger knowledge base of sport psychology for years to come."
