5-0 out of 5 stars For Academics.
This books is more of a research overview than anthing else, with a variety of papers written from several perspectives.A particular disappointment to me was that, rather than getting essays from the many talented Aspies out there, they got some from their parents to close the book out.It is probably more useful to psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, and the specialist working on a Ph.D. in Special Ed than any parent or newly diagnosed Aspie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference on the topic.
I agree with both reviewers already listed. This book is NOT for the casual reader and most family/ friends will find it difficult, distracting and frustrating. For the newcommer to the field there are better books out there. However this is the best I've seen for someone alreadh familiar with the disorder who wants a good review of the state of the art in 1999-2000. For the serious student however, one would want to augment the text with more up to date journal materials as new information is available. It would be great to see a new addition of this book released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of material for researchers
The collection of papers in this volume are really top class. All the academic authors (there are a few snippets from parents) are very well published. The erudition shows in the breadth and depth of coverage. In such a rapidly hanginf field thisis as near as you can come to frozen slice of current thinking. Unlike many anthologies, wherein authors expound on a particular niche obsession, the bulk of articles here offer broad overviews of work. The diagnosis and symptomatology debate is well presented in a series of papers opening the book. Leaving aside the technical academic ares, most paretns will find teh sections on langauge and interventions informative but downheartening. What come across is that adoelscents AS are so heterogenous as a group that even assessing theor conversational deficits is several dozen research projects in itself. The one area of the book that I personally was a little weak on recommendations related to interventions. The emphasis here was on methodological concerns and in fact often meta-methodological concerns. It is eqaully clear that many researchers regard the possibility of remission of AS has highly improbable - to be polite about it. Be that as it may, I reflected to myself a number of times during the course of reading the book (and being part of team looking into interventions), that if a fraction of the effort expended was applied to intervention research would be make better strides? It's a moot point, but if we lose hope we better close down science. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars easy read
Easy read but a bit redundant in its explinations. The writing sounds like she is talking to you and is not as formal in language as other psychology books. Although it is dated the information within the book is useful for work being done today in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic book in the field.
It was good to read this book. When I was doing play therapy as a counselor I used this book in my work.It doesn't tell the whole story of how to do play therapy, but it is a good addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Axline's book is a "must read" for persons interested in play therapy.I have used her book along with the text while teaching at the university level. Her book provides the reader with case studies and practical information. Her writing style is intelligible as well as technical-a rare find! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great and efficient
This is a complete and conscientious manual for child and adolescent psychiatric diagnoses and protocals. It is adequately detailed and simple to navigate. Editorial comments are are brief and only applied to variations from past criteria or concepts. Spectrum disorders, for example-autistic and bi-polar receive more details. Several changes stand out; a personality diagnosis may be used for an adolescent; the return of the use of adjustment disorder, anti-social personality may only apply to adult functioning, and the continuous ambiguity of ODD. I will add my own frustrations with the academic disorders- they keep changing the name- which means very little to the practitioner. As a training guide it offers a concise and organized sequence that should be highly useful as an adjunt to internship experiences.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Evidence-Based Psychotherapies for Children and Adolescents
Is a good book written by Alan E. Kazdin. However we have four childrens of our own and I never needed a book to teach them manners and also to teach them to respect family, friends, and neighbours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative
This is a compendium of articles, by a host of different researchers, describing different aspects of "evidence-based" psychotherapies for children and adolescents. The first four chapters describe the concept of "evidence-based," its evolution, how research on psychotherapy with children must incorporate developmental factors, and the ethical aspects of doing research on psychotherapy. The basic premise of "evidence-based" psychotherapy is that there have been empirically sound, replicated, and meaningful research studies that have demonstrated the efficacy of that therapy. This is important because, in the past, a theorist would come forward, claiming to have found a treatment that was highly effective for a certain psychopathology, describe three case histories to support his claim, and many people accepted the treatment as effective. How could anyone know it was the treatment that brought about the change, and not just the therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist?Did anyone know how many times the therapy did NOT work?Would it work for anyone else?Would it even work for the very next client that the author used the technique with?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough
This was a great book for us. It really helped us with the bedtime portion of sleep training. Within a few nights of being put to bed awake, our son was putting himself to sleep without crying. However, he still dealt with night wakings for another few months. According to Mindell, the night wakings should eventually cease. I read The No Cry Sleep Solution, The Baby Whisperer, and Good Night, Sleep Tight. What finally worked for us was Good Night, Sleep Tight by Kim West. We realized the importance of eliminating night feedings, which our son was using as a crutch, or a negative sleep association. It did involve some tears, but we are all sleeping much better now. His naps have even improved! Good Night, Sleep Tight seems very much the middle ground between crying it out and the no-cry sleep solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This book isn't for every child but for my son - it worked perfectly.I loved the fact that, even though my son is 14 months old, I was able to jump into the book in the middle and still have solutions (other books - you start from infancy or you're lost). While I didn't feel that everything in this book was right for our child - I was comfortable picking and choosing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Decidedly NOT vague
I was anxious to find a solution that didn't involve crying.I purchased the no-cry sleep solution by Elizabeth Pantley, which I found helpful, but vague. As I searched for more information I stumbled on Jodi Mindell's book, and devoured the thing in two days. Some reveiwers don't like Dr. Mindell's approach because she advocates some crying, but I would argue that those people didn't read the book very carefully.Dr. Mindell advocates all of the solutions outlined in Elizabeth Pantley's book, but with more detail and explanation. She also explains how certain parental behaviors can CAUSE sleep issues.I learned that some of the things I was doing was making the situation worse.Bottom line, Dr. Mindell advocates crying ONLY after you have made all the other changes to improve sleeping behavior.Dr. Mindell's book is well researched and well written. It is evident that she is well credentialed. ... This is a chilling book as it describes the addiction to video games that are of serious concern regardless of the good or bad content of individual games.Boys and young men are becoming addicted to games that are interferring with their high school and college years and even into their marriages. One of the chapters is appropriatly entitled "Lost Boys".I grieve for the lost potental stolen away by video and computer games.I recommend this book highly to parents who are struggling with trying to control video games in their homes and achieve balance with something that was supposed to be for recreation but is now taking over all of their kid's free time. The behavior that I have observed regarding my own sons, their friends, and students at school is accurately described in my book. ... Editorial Review

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a group of psychological techniques developed in the early 1970s, has been a huge influence on today's motivational writers (particularly Tony Robbins). As its name suggests, NLP is based on the idea that the human mind is a sort of computer; our verbal and body language are the programming that allows us to change our thoughts and influence other people. Anneé Linden, director of an NLP training center in New York City, provides easy-to-understand descriptions of techniques such as mimicking someone's movements to create an instant sense of rapport and intimacy, or creating a conditioned response in yourself to feel certain emotions on demand. Some might find these techniques uncomfortably manipulative, but Linden says people do them on an unconscious level anyway;NLP is just a new way of coming to terms with what you already know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NLP made easy.
This book is chapter after chapter of how NLP can be used in a persons life to better the way we communicate. Especially with ourselves. Nothing difficult in this book. It's all well explained so not to complicate things. Each chapter is an NLP journey. Such as >.. if someone tells you not to think of a cat chasing a mouse, we immediately think of a cat chasing a mouse. Read the book to see how Linden explains this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro To NLP
Anne Linden's Mindworks is a bit different than most NLP books I've read so far. For one thing, the book is highly organized, and reads as much like an encyclopedia as anything else. You won't find the author hop-scotching from one subject to the next or throwing things at you out of context. The book is well laid out, and is truly aimed at those with little to no previous knowledge of NLP. It helps you learn the basics from the ground up.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This as an excellent intro and overview into the field of NLP.Linden has done a great job with this book, though it is a bit slow to get into, the wealth of information that it contains, is well worth the persaverance. It is a shame that it is out of print. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Indulgent
Another excuse for teenage laziness. Arnett does not back up his argument strongly enough. Could be a stage that adults go in and out of multiple times over the life course rather than restricted to after adolescence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very engaging and informative book
The biggest surprise about Emerging Adulthood is that it wasn't published by a trade press -- it should have been. Although also chock full of great research, this is a very accessible and engaging read. The interviews with young people are suburb, as are the illustrations and the surveys on important issues. The "Twixter" phenomenon of young people taking longer to find their way has been around for awhile, and this is the first book to really capture it in all its facets. The chapter on religion alone is worth the price of the book -- it cuts through media hype about growing fundamentalism to show that actually, most young people aren't all that religious. Parents or teachers, buy this book if you want to understand your twentysomething kids. Twentysomethings, buy this book to see that you are not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars a critical guide to understanding years 18 to 25
This book is a critical guide. It is useful for understanding the experiences, the challenges, and the potential of those who have left adolescence and have not yet entered adulthood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treating Trauma in Children & Teens Made Easy
This is one of the best books I've used when dealing with trauma and children or teens. It is a step by step menu to help therapists move from the beginning to the resolution. If this were just the content, the book far surpasses many resources in understanding, engaging, and treating children of all ages who have exprienced trauma. However, the additional information on engaging parents and school personel is excellent. It also presents wonderful case examples to support the content. And the sections that discuss the known treatment models for trauma are clear, concise, and give concrete examples. Ricky Greenwald has really excelled in this literary endeavor to provide therapists all over the world with knowledge and treatment suggestions to work with our most valuable resource - our children! I use this book on a regular basis to support, validate, and enhance my treatment of children. Thank you Ricky!

5-0 out of 5 stars An intuitive and practical guide for working with traumatized children
Finally! A comprehensive framework that conceptualizes trauma treatment for children in a way that makes intuitive and practical sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all who work with children and youth!!
Ricky Greenwald has brilliantly illustrated a way for us to think about how to work with children & youth impacted by "trauma".The Child Trauma Handbook gives the reader "hands on" practice information that is grounded in evidence based practice strategies.I will this information to help me work more effectively in my clinical practice and in my classroom teaching!! ... Editorial Review

If, as a child, you were abused or neglected by someone you loved and trusted, it's likely you blamed yourself. To survive as an abused child, you struggled to forget the pain. But this tactic became a life-destroying force. It deadened your ability to feel, to be aware, to remember and, later, reemerged as unresolved rage, perhaps misdirected at your own children. You can halt that cycle and reclaim the truth about the abuse with this book. Miller's conviction--that it's only through feeling loved and cherished that cruelty can be recognized--provides a starting point for healing. ... Read more

Alice Miller, I am a fan. Infor helped me let go of some stuff

4-0 out of 5 stars Important, though seriously flawed.
Any book recommended by my oldest daughter is one I will read, so I not only bought Miller's book as soon as I received my daughter's e-mail, I read it completely the first night. Miller is talented and competent. This book is exceptionally important, and reminds me of errors I made with my own children, but it makes the serious mistake of employing an extremist single-think, no-exceptions presentation. Miller's constant use of "all," "no exceptions," "never," "absolutely none," etc., is a major flaw in thinking, and very unscientific. Obviously, since she hasn't seen all cases, she can't classify all cases. Her writing thus takes on a tone of fanaticism and pseudo-religious faith in her "one true principle" -- her "sole explanation" for all instances -- allowing for no exception.
3-0 out of 5 stars She Condemns Child Abusers But Not The Abuser Within Herself
No writer has had more of an impact on me than Alice Miller, but the more I grow, the more I realize her limits.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book!
Not only does this book deal with a very sensitive and difficult topic in a very intelligent, straightforward, sensitive, and psychologically healthymanner, but it teaches extremely valuable skills for parenting and coping with ANY troubles life may throw your way. The companion book for children does the very same thing, and very effectively teaches children coping skills in an encouraging, realistic, and safe way. Both books excel in highlighting and addressing differences between the ways adults process thoughts and emotions and the way children do this.
