2-0 out of 5 stars Too simple
I just finished this book and one of the things I didn't like about it was that it is written too simply.I felt like she was writing to middle-schoolers and she probably was aiming the book at middle & high-schoolers.I also didn't like how she protrayed herself as the nicest person at every school she went to.If she didn't like what some of the other kids did with their time, she should have made different friends and moved on.I don't doubt that most or even all of that stuff happened to her, but she did seem to wallow in it as another reviewer observed. And I definitely didn't like the way she name-dropped & bragged about herself to make herself feel better. From what I could gather, Jodee is just a few years older than me and I just don't recall anyone in the schools I went to getting bullied to that extent.Sure some students called other students names, but I don't recall any phycical stuff.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please Stop Writing, Jodee
I was very intrigued by the premise of this book, expecting it to be as eye-opening and heartbreaking as Dave Pelzer's books, particularly since she was compared to him. Unfortunately, it is shaming to Pelzer and others who have experienced such trauma in their lives to place Blanco in the same category with them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Turing a Blind Eye and Ignoring Reality
After reading this book I was deeply moved by it and the courage and strength Jodee managed to maintain throughout it. There are many adolescents who aren't nearly as strong and give up hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good tool
I started using art projection when I was a psychologist for a child adolescent unit in a state hospital.A good way to engage angry or depressed children without threat is to ask them to draw something, unless they have poor perceptual motor skills. But getting them to draw will tell you something about that right away. It is important to know what to expect in average drawing skills and this book helps with that. It also gives a place to start with children who have difficulty with verbal expression. This is not the Be All- End All text but it is worthy of being a companion to other art evaluation tools. It is for the subjective anecdotal information to supplement the more objective tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works for me in Special Education: quick emotional test
This is not the original I was trained to use but it works as well or better than Goodall's.I use it twice a year and have found the student responses are more in depth for interpretation than their psychoeducational or psychological reports. You can find more quickly where the "hope" level is and put energy into those who are reachable and refer those who aren't.I have collected hundreds of these samples over the years and find most are right on the mark. Of course, it mustn't be used as a diagnostic tool but it works well as a verifier of info.

2-0 out of 5 stars An unproven laundry list for interpretation
For those who want easy answers to deciphering drawings, then this book is a *must read.* But reader beware-- this research is not particularly sound and the original text was written in the early 70's, approximately 30 years ago-- and this book was not significantly updated since then. Hello! Our family values and ideas about family have changed since then, but that is not addressed in this volume. An art therapist worth their salt does not use this type of unreliable assessment to work with clients. I apologize for disagreeing with the last reviewer, but I believe this volume is more of a *must avoid* rather than any type of a classic in the field of art therapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents/those caring for boys, especially w/ LD/ADHD
I highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read.Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son
My son age 7 years has difficulty recognising emotions. As a preschooler he was treated for a Specific Language Impairment(comprehension difficulties/language processing difficulties). His speech and language is now age appropriate.I asked the Speech Therapist for ideas to help his emotional understanding. She said I would have to ask the "Autism Professionals" even though my son does not have Autism!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of boys
I loved this book!It was a great tool to remind me to slow down, talk, and communicate with my two sons.Dr. Cox has a wonderful way to meld real-life examples with his parenting suggestions and I've been able to apply these lessons at home. The author's writing style is friendly & accessible which made it a joy to read.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Contribution
A landmark contribution by two seasoned experts in teaching children with autism--this book guides the reader through an in-depth understanding about the pivotal responses in the child's developmental trajectory in relationships with teachers, therapists and, most importantly the family in everyday life. The application of behavioral principles in natural settings brings the concepts alive and makes them useful to readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly informative and very strongly recommended to all parents, teachers, and counselors of autistic children
Knowledgeably co-authored by Robert L. Koegel (Director of the Koegel Autism Center, University of California, Santa Barbara) and Lynn Kern Koegel (Director of Clinical Services at the Koegel Autism Center) Pivotal Response Treatments For Autism: Communication, Social, And Academic Development is an informed and informative study of the tactics and strategies employed to improve the learning and comprehensive cognitive understanding of autistic children. Exploring ways to improve children's academic performance, advance children's communication and language skills, foster social interactions and friendships with typically developing peers, reduce disruptive behaviors, aid early identification and intervention, and reduce ritualistic behaviors and broaden children's interests, Pivotal Response Treatments For Autism is highly informative and very strongly recommended to all parents, teachers, and counselors of autistic children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Practical Treatment Guide
This book focuses on behavioral treatments for children with autism. As the subtitle suggests, it covers the three main areas that are challenging for children affected by autism - communication, social, and academic development. While it is written with autism in mind, the techniques are certainly applicable to the spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs). The techniques are rooted in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and are developmentally sensitive. The authors attempt to make the treatments practical and natural (i.e. reinforcers should be tailored to the child's natural environment). I found the section on academic development to be especially helpful. Several pictorial examples of homework were given, and how a parent might make the homework less intimidating (e.g. organizing information, chunking, giving hints, etc.) This book could be used by parents, professionals, and paraprofessionals. I used it in an educational setting, and have not actually tried any of the techniques. But I can say that the interventions are based on sound research, and I expect that they would be effective when applied properly. PRTs for Autism is a complete and accesible book. However, it is not necessarily a motivational book nor one that you would use for an evening of easy reading. It is basically a book that gives detailed treatment techniques. I think this is its strong suit, as I have seen other treatment books and planners that simply give general ideas on how to approach treatment. For a book that is more motivational while still having practical strategies, I recommend another book by one of the co-authors (Lynn Kern Koegel) called Overcoming Autism -- which is geared more specifically towards parents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible description of the mind's functioning
As I start this review, I want to say that I'm not a mental health professional. I'd been so used to psychological texts falling into 2 distinct categories: texts written by MD's explaining how everything wrong with you involves an excess of seratonin (or some other chemical) or books written by clinicians talking essentially only about their personal clinical experiences. This book breaks (or combines maybe..?) these stereotypes in a readable, detailed, and very well-supported (~500 references) account of how experiences actually create biological malfunctions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellect perspective...
This is a uniquely important book! Maybe those who so vividly expressed their disappointent in their reviews, misunderstood the title! The book is about DEVELOPING MIND, which means about how certain class of brain processes we call 'mind' come into being as the brain rewires itself.1-0 out of 5 stars Caution
This is a really bad book that it seem good.First of all, If you got some knowledge about neuroscience you won't enjoy at all, don't read this book!! ... You will have to read"what is a neuron?" and this sort of thing. The aim of the book is to integrate many branch of science (like attachment theory, neurobiology, developmental psychology, etc.) in order to explain the mind and it's development. But not so far than chapter two all become a disorder, it seem like Segal has read all about development and neuroscience and that he want to put it all together.. But "put it together" isn't the same that "integrate"!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alyssa's Review
Ophelia Speaks by Sara Shandler, is a book filled with heart warming stories from adolescents everywhere. Although this novel discusses mature content I feel that girls everywhere should read this novel. Ophelia Speaks discusses these issues in a mature and open minded fashion. In our English class we're learning how women are objectified in today's society. Ophelia Speaks discusses everything from rape and drugs to pregnancy and abuse. I feel that it's important for girls to have knowledge in what is happening in the world, regardless of age. I enjoyed reading Ophelia Speaks because the novel was based on true stories. Since these stories are true they give the reader an opportunity to connect with them on a personal level. I consistently found myself reading this book outside of school, which is rare. I recommend this book to people, especially women, of all ages. On a personal note I would suggest bringing a box of Kleenex while you read this book. I feel that it is just as important for men to acknowledge these issues especially since they have an active part in most of these issues. It is important for people to acknowledge and learn from experiences, both traumatic and remarkable. And especially since we are the future it's necessary that we learn from the past to prepare for life. This book conveys the message that you're not alone in life no matter what the circumstances are. It is important to know that rape is not your fault as well acknowledging that you're not alone.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Waste of Time
I've never seen a larger waste of literary effort than I did in Ophelia Speaks by Sara Shandler.I am (...)old and, as the targeted audience, I found nothing redeeming hidden among Shandler's shameful pages. Perhaps if Shandler had advertised a different prospect, I would not be so mortified for her hideous compilation. However, considering that she wished to voice the confusion found among adolescents, I must say, I think she failed miserably. The submissions are threaded with poorly written pieces and the polar extremes of teenage horror.Death, rape, abusive boyfriends, bulimia, cutting- you name a traumatic experience, and I'll bet you it's in there. It seems odd to me that the book was supposed to advocate an "adolescent's search for self," because, with all due respect, this was a terrifically depressing collection.Seriously. Play hide and go seek all you want with the optimistic stories, but you'll be searching for quite some time. One of the sorry pieces that truly ticked me off was "The Body Under Assault", a testament to the bleak and destructive attitudes of teenage drama queens. How is this person's horrific disorder EVER going to help me "find myself" or obtain a positive outlook? Also, not one piece reflected my own opinion.Shandler managed to pluck the most polarized stories so that she failed to represent the opinions of your average adolescent altogether. Instead of optimistic, soulsearching entries, I found myself lost amongst rabid quests of nightmarish ex-friends, forests of self-pitying tales of trauma, and barren plains of the problems that fester in nuclear families. How is a regular teen supposed to find any sort of guidance through such morbid tales? Not to mention that Shandler seems to pride herself with the belief that she's this determined, successful, understanding undergraduate.Think again...and again, and again, and again.Shandler's little tidbits of insight preceding each chapter left me craving to meet her only so I could quiet her self-righteous nuggets of wisdom.Save your money and forget the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars GIRLS NEED MORE
Okay, I know there is a place for a book that is filled with girls' worries and sorrows and anguish. But for my money, it's more valuable to give a girl a book that does not just reflect her angst, but that offers solutions, tips, hope, and empowerment. The best book I know about for girls (preteen and teen) is GIRLTALK: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You which recently came out in a fourth edition. I read it as a teen back in 1985 and recently gave the fully updated book to my nieces--who loved it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I read Kaufman's book in a graduate class on assessment and intelligence testing. I still refer to it whenever I have unusual test scores with a WISC-III. It explains in a comprehensive and clear manner how a competent psychologist should interpret the WISC-III. It is worth every penny.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but there are better ones
I am a therapist and am always looking for resources to utilize in my work with children, adolescents, and families. However, many of the exercises in this book require a lot of extra supplies, which can add up to a lot of money. There are some good ideas in the book, but I've found much better resources that contain exercises that can be used individually, in groups, as homework, and don't cost anything but the time and money to copy a few pages. I was disappointed when I got this book because it requires too much when you've got an overload of clients to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner!!
I have also purchased 104 Activities That Build.. by Alanna Jones. Both of these books have assisted me with educating my child clients on improving their self-esteem, managing their anger in an appropriate way, and utilizing coping skills to deal every day situations. The activities in this book have allowed me to interact with my clients in a non-threatening manner which is crucial in developing a trustworthy relationship.I highly recommend this book to any mental health professional who provides socialization skills to children.

I personally was able to work with Alanna Jones and her book is a great extention of her professional work in recreational therapy. The activities in the book are easy to understand and implement with a variety of ageswith minimal changes needed to fit all age groups.I would highlyreccomend this book to those who work with children and adolescences in anyforum to help teach teamwork, self esteem and ways to use exercise toincrease they quality of life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Late Talking Children
Excellent book.Empowers parents and honors children.Mr. Sowell's sharing of his own experience and that of others is powerful and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I read this book because I was so worried about my son. After having 3 daughters, I noticed that my son's speech was delayed. The words "autism", "speech therapy", and other associated words cropped up in the "professionals'" language. When I read this book, it was like I was reading a biography of my son. Now, 3 years later, he's still following the pattern of the kids in this book. His speech is so much better, and I have to laugh because had I taken him to speech therapy, I would have been impressed at how well it must have helped! Some people get very angry towards this author because they say that their children really are autistic and they wasted time by not treating their children after reading this book.If that's the case, then the author isn't talking about their children and he makes that clear in his book.Sowell saved me lots of time, money, and anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisiting Late Talking Children by Thomas Sowell
I benefitted enormously from this book.I was amazed at the venom unleashed [by only a few reviewers] on this informative and helpful book, which makes no claims to be based on scientific studies but on anecdotal evidence that fell into the writer's lap because he had to struggle through the anxiety of observing and, yes, testing his own late-talking child. It is not a how-to-book, nor does it attempt to give parents diagnostic tools. The anecdotal approach is helpful because it does not present just the situation of one child, but the predicament of many who fall outside the parameters of the lists that now proliferate in the health care community which pretend to establish rigid parameters of normal development, despite disclaimers to the contrary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic ending to a fantastic story
After reading One Child the prequel to this novel I was intrigued. The novel left me wanting more and thats exactly what I got with The Tigers Child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sobering & Honest
Having read One Child over and over and over again starting at the age of ten, I was euphoric to come upon The Tiger's Child in a bookstore 15 years later. I had wondered about Sheila my whole life, worked for several years in a preschool in great part due to that astonishing tale. I believe all the magic that was in the first book, because that is the truth about the reality of children. The Tiger's Child was somehow more sad, even if in much subtler & less horrifying ways than the first book. Sheila had left her childhood, and Torey L. Hayden (who was just 24 in the first book!) was not in a position to help her to quite the extent that she had been able to in the earlier years. Torey L. Hayden writes very honestly and does not attempt to soften any of the difficulties in this later period. Her work as a teacher is remarkable & awe-inspiring... I just wish that somehow the world had continued to provide for Sheila as much as Torey had been able to in One Child.Iache that the extraordinary, brilliant light that was Sheila was not left with as purely a happpy ending as the first book leads us to believe is possible...but I strongly recommend reading both stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying and Heart-Warming
When I first heard about TIGER'S CHILD, I knew that I had to read it to find out what had happened to Sheila.I was not disappointed.I found that Sheila had carried a great deal of anger around with her all these years toward Torey for "showing her the good life and then deserting her just like her mother had."This rather dumb-founded Torey, because she was just doing what all teachers do at the end of a school year--saying good-bye to her students and moving on.Torey had to work very hard in this book to build up a trust level again.Sheila was not going to make this easy. However, the ending was satisfying; and we are left knowing that Sheila will be all right.I don't know how Torey makes her writing such compelling reading.I could not put the book down--even when I needed to look at scenery on a vacation.I recommend this book to anyone who needs a heart-warming read. ...
