5-0 out of 5 stars A Portrait of Gen-X
What is amazing about this book (and I am referring to the first edition) is that it describes Generation-X. This book was originally published in 1991, which means that it dealt with children who lived in the eighties. In fact when you read what the children were like in those times (I was one of them...in fact I graduated from High School the year the book was published)and then you relate it to what is written about Gen-X you find an incredible parallel. Has indeed the dominance of television in the first MTV culture (Gen-X) created a generation of people who are not able to truly utilize higher-level thinking abilities? When you compare Healy's work with what we see today it seems that Healy was indeed onto something when she originally wrote the book. 2-0 out of 5 stars Unsubstantiated and belabored.
Despite the claim of the subtitle, the author can never really tell us why children don't think and what we can do about it.Every word of this book may be true; unfortunately, very little is substantiated. If repetition and anecdote proved anything, this would be a masterpiece. As it is, the book is four times the length it needs to make the points it makes.4-0 out of 5 stars Parents: If You REALLY Care for Your Kids
Healy's basic premise in this book is that human minds undergo actual physical changes with external stimuli, with different kinds of learning and stimuli producing different effects. She also attempts to show that while the human mind is pretty plastic, it is not infinitely so in that some physical characteristics of the brain are more or less fixed by the time the child reaches adolescence.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights from a new perspective
Whatever opinion scholars have of Bettelheim, this is an extraordinarily eye-opening work for a layman. Just the insights into the magical thinking of children--how fairy tales make sense to them because a parent's abilities to predict behavior, for example, seems magical to them too--is "worth the price of admission" for any parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic psychoanalytical view of fairy tales
It is well known that storytelling is an innate expression of civilization, in an effort to define who we are and to make sense of the world. The fairy tale is an important part of this tradition that has a long and rich history spanning thousands of years.
1-0 out of 5 stars Take with a LARGE grain of salt
I've noticed that one reviewer pointed to Richard Pollak's biography of the author, "The Creation of Dr. B," as a source of information on Bruno Bettelheim's legitimacy as a psychoanalyst (or lack thereof).I would second that recommendation. Before reading "The Uses of Enchantment," one should be aware that large portions of this book were brazenly plagiarized from other sources, such as Julius Heuscher's "A Psychiatric Study of Fairy Tales: Their Origin, Meaning and Usefulness."Several passages were lifted directly from this work, published in 1963 (more than a decade before Bettelheim began writing "The Uses of Enchantment"), and barely even paraphrased.Heuscher was cited only once by Bettelheim, and not for any of these virtually direct quotes.I would think long and hard before taking anything Bettelheim attempted to pass off as his own work seriously. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk
The book offered lots of examples that involves changing the way you word things when speaking to your teen with the goal that it will have a more positive affect on conversations with your kids. It's worthwhile in the sense that it gives helpful examples of "conversation starters" to hopefully get the teen talking. But it's no guarantee either that you will get the response you're looking for because the person you're trying to talk to or reason with has their own, seperate agenda. So it's a good starting point rather than a "quick fix" which, when looking at the big picture, should work out a lot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Talk so Teens Will Listen and Listen so Teens Will Talk
Very useful strategies for interacting in a positive way with Teens without compromising either their or your own sense of self. I found it to be very readable and down to earth with plenty of examples and case studies to illustrate real life use of the stratagies. It gives permission to be creative and have fun on the way while maintaining respect for all. Warmly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Find a Better Book
For the record, this is a book with three different introductions, and each chapter is written by a different author. So you'd think it would represent a fairly broad perspective on various topics.Maybe it does. But I just don't care for the perspectives.5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
With the second edition of "Children with Autism", Michael Powers has again provided families of children with autism (along with professionals)an invaluable resource for living with, and loving, a child with autism. In straightforward, non-technical language, "Children with Autism" addresses the needs of persons with autism and their families across their lifespan. From diagnosis, to early intervention, to adulthood we are presented with practical information that, in addtion, has a fairly broad research base. I am on my third copy as I keep lending mine out and, for some reason (perhaps the value of the information contained) they never seem to be retained.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Dr. Powers has been a major contributor to the understanding of autism spectrum disorders for many years. The ORIGINAL book was one of the few available on the subject at the time of publishing, and while it is NOW outdated, it has been replaced by the current edition published in 2000.This edition contains much useful information that parents will not find elsewhere.I was, therefore, somewhat confused that the reviews for the previous edition are still on this website, as they really describe a different book, which is very misleading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars book
This is an excellent book for Early Childhood Educators. The book iseasy to read and it covers before birth to 12 years of age. It has excellent resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information
Although this book is a textbook I purchased it as a new parent for use as a guide to my daughter's development. While it does contain a great deal of useful information it doesn't go into significant detail about any particular phase of development but rather gives an overview of each stage, hitting the highlights. Nonetheless I would buy it again and think it was a good investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars general review
This book gives the basic expectations for the ages specified. The book breaks the developmental expectations down by age, and covers most developmental expectations such as physical and cognitive and social. This is a good beginners book or one to reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child of Divorce
This book is extremely well-written and presents information in a concise, easy to understand manner. I was on a search for self-understanding when I came across this book. I was intrigued by it because never before have I seen a work presented in light of the children of divorce who are young adults. I feel as if I better understand who I am and WHY I have the thoughts and behaviors that I do. It was such a relief to know that I wasn't the only one feeling at odds with life after my parents' divorce. An excellent, must-read book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ruffling Some Feathers...To Save Our Kids
I rarely read other reviews before writing my own, but in this case I was curious to see if earlier readers had expressed outrage at the author's premise. Response from readers to date appeared rather sympathetic to Ms. Marquandt, which suggested to me that this work may be reaching more childhood survivors of divorce than the perpetrators. I do wonder if the author is pleased with this apparent outcome, since her concluding remarks seem more directed toward adults in the contemplative stages of a divorce; the editing of the book does not necessarily serve that purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shaping the Inner Lives of Children of Divorce
I read "Between Two Worlds' nine months ago and have struggled ever since to complete this review. It was painful to read and even more painful to review.Elizabeth Marquardt has authored an extremely valuable book - one that can stand tall next to the works of Judith Wallerstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction of "a reader from Orlando"
The review by Orlando presents faulty information. The Brief Adolescent Therapy Homework Planner does indeed contain homework assignments on topics focused for teenagers. Contrary to what was written by Orlando, the book contains assignments on such topics as Conduct Disorder, Chemical Dependence, Eating Disorder, Peer/Sibling Conflict, Runaway, Sexual Abuse Perpetrator, Sexual Abuse Victim, and Mania/Hypomania as well as common problems such as Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Low Self-Esteem and Oppositional Defiant. The book does NOT contain exercises for Enuresis/Encopresis. I expect that Orlando was looking at the Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner when the review was written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good activites to personalize for clients

Children Held Hostage is the very best book for help in understanding and identifying PARENTAL ALIENATION.It should be in the hands of every Lawyer, Guardian ad Litem, Psychologist and any one working with children. It, also, is very beneficial for parents to read, who are suffering from this disorder.Parental Alienation is cruel and breaks the bond-of-love between a parent and child. Before allowing a Guardian ad Litem or others to intervene, he/she should read this book. I cannot praise it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glowing Review
This book is necessary for anybody looking to implement or improve an already existing activity schedule. Although McClannahan and Krantz are experts in the field of behavior analysis, they wrote the books so that you don't have to be a near genius I.Q to understand it. The book is perfect for parents and teachers as well as students studying behavior analysis or special education teachers interested in working with autistic children. The first chapter is dedicated to discussing what an activity schedule is and how your child or student will benefit. The subsequent chapter delves into the pre-requisite skills the child will need prior to beginning. The authors explain each pre-requisite skill, why it is necessary and provide examples of each skill. The next few chapters discuss how to implement the activity schedule as well as how to measure progress. They really left nothing out. Toward the end of the book, they explained what to do when the activity schedule is mastered and provided a great deal of detail on the dos and don'ts. It is clear, that the McClannahan and Krantz really want readers to be successful at creating and teaching activity schedules. They have also co-authored Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism, which is also worth checking out. My hats off to them on such an awesome educational easy to read and understand how to book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate goals.
The goal of raising any child is to guide them into independance, and though many autistic children will never reach complete independance, it remains an important goal.Independance is an important factor in self-esteem and is essential for entering any portion of adult life.I was consistantly frustrated with therapy manuals which required my complete and undivided attention at all times.I'm under no delusion that I will be forever available to my autistic son, and it would be nice for me to feel that he could get up and at least dress himself at some point without my verbally prompting him.2-0 out of 5 stars 'This show stinks.'- Tony Kornheiser
I read this book and became annoyed on two points. The authors incorporate and instruct in using PECS, TEACCH and ABA components throughout the book--yet fail to mention these highly useful and universally known interventions by name. This smells pretty arrogant, considering that originators of and recognized experts in these fields are alive, well---and also Ph.Ds.Two: They malign discrete trial teaching in a businesslike tone, with no proof to back their statement. Their stance:DTT does not build give and take conversation skills. However, I could not find anything in this book indicating their concept had mastered this issue either.Their supposed 'initiated interactions' are still scripted; human interaction has been replaced by reliance on the continuing existence of a picture or word to prompt a response in the form of taking action. So, it's still a duck.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful child therapy book in my library
It's been 4 yrs since I read this book, and I still recommend it often to young therapists as well as to the most seasoned. One of the most skilled child clinicians I know told me that reading this book has changed the way she practices child therapy.Everyone who has read it (that I know of) has liked it and purchased their own copy after starting to read mine.It is written in a very readable fashion, which will be a delight to those who have trudged through dense clinical texts.Prior to reading this book, I used conventional board games merely as filler, and usually felt guilty about doing so.Shortly after I read this, I was able to put them to good clinical use. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if working with children
This is a must read if you are working with children. The author is one whom I consider the best in the field. It clearly defines all the basic principles of working with abused children and helps the new practitioner become familiar with the appropriate jargon in the field of play therapy. This is the "bible" of child therapy in my opinion and is priceless.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for the lay man
I'm sure this book has a great message, but I couldn't understand it.From Pierce's use of language I might have had an easier time understanding it had it been written in Egyptian heiroglyphics.I hear how amazing this book is and I'm sure it is.Just be wearing your xtra smart hat.I suggest a book by Hygeia Halfmoon instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some readers will love this book
The overall message of this book is important for parents and babies; we need to let babies and children grow and develop. We need to provide stimulation and new experiences. We need to keep the little ones close, provide them security and not force Western-style "independence" on them. This keeping close means a natural birth, breastfeeding, holding and talking to- not getting our children attached to things. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent should read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships and Challenges
Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges, written by Garrod, Smulyan, Powers, and Kilkenny (2000), is a collection of personal stories written by college students. The stories consist of the students' recollections of events that occurred during their adolescent years. This book provides much insight into the development of adolescents, while it also aides in the understanding and development of current theories. The case studies collected by the authors are excellent tools for gaining insight into the mind of the adolescent. The authors of the case studies not only narrate events from their past, but also provide personal perspectives as to why they reacted in certain ways and held particular concerns during their adolescent years. 5-0 out of 5 stars Adolescent portraits: Identity, relationships, and challenge
