5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
This book provides really good insights into children with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. Recommended to me by a school social worker, and I understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful and practical
As a parent of a child diagnosed PDD-NOS, I was elated to find this book.I like the fact that it groups the Asperger's kids with the High Functioning Autistic kids, because in my experience, the two groups do have so much in common (and diagnoses can be somewhat subjective). The book is very well-written and has a positive outlook.I have found myself rereading parts, underlining, taking notes -- it is a great resource and has given me some terrific new ideas and insight into how I can better parent my son and encourage him to be the best he can be and live the fullest life he can.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for new parents
As a pediatrician, I love this little book and have given it to all my friends when they had their first baby. Dr. Stern is a recognized expert on early childhood development and teaches at Cornell. In this book he has done something quite unusual. He succeeded in weaving the pearls from his academic work into a delightful, readable book that any interested person can enjoy. This book makes it fun to understand your child better.

5-0 out of 5 stars every new parent should read this
This is an amazing book. It tells the story of what life is like from birth to age 4 from the point of view of the child. I give it as a gift to every new parent I know because I believe that the most important quality in a parent is empathy -- the capacity to understand the inner experience of their child. It is written by a highly respected researcher on child development and is also useful for graduate students in psychology to get a handle on difficult concepts in a pleasurable way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mind
Dr. Stern's prose is beautiful. He presents, in near poetry-format, a fascinating look into the mind of an infant. Starting at 4 weeks and continuing to 4 years, he brings you into the world of a child. I couldn't put this book down! (And this is notable, given that I am a new Mom and have more than enough to do!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowlby's Contribution
This collection of lectures and previously published papers brings together the essentials of Bolwlby's contributions. The first paper summaries his work on the effects of separation of children from their caregivers that was intrumental in bringing ciritical changes in the manner that hospitals and other institutions deal with children's separations from their caregivers. He succinctly summarizes his formulation of attachment theory, which is now regarded as the keystone for understanding infants' early relationships with their caregivers. As a bonus, there are two papers on psychoanalysis as a science that forshadow the need to bring together psychoanalysis as a discipline and the emerging knowledge about brain development that is being acquired by neuroscientists. It is a pleasure to read this small volume. Joe Palombo

3-0 out of 5 stars So so
I have only gotten about 1/3 of the way through this book so far. What is keeping me from reading more is the technical aspect of his writing style. The book goes through case studies and presentations the author has put together... I'd rather have a more easy to read style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Beyond Belief
Freud saw the development of the ability to form affectionate bondsthrough the dark glass of psychoanalysis.Bowlby and his associates havegiven us the ability to see the development of inter-personal relationswith the clarity of the scientific method and with deep humanunderstanding. Anyone interested in improving our ability to love oneanother will find this book useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information
It's almost overwhelming. There is no way you can spend this much time teaching everything, but it's nice to be able to pick and choose fun things to do with your baby. It's easy to use in a well thought out layout from birth on, divided by sensory perception.

5-0 out of 5 stars What do you do with a baby?
As a first time mom,of a child with special needs to boot, I had no idea. This book and the others in the series are great resources for finding things to do with your child other than watching Teletubbies for the thousandth time. If your child needs extra help in a certain area, like fine motor or listening skills, you can easily find a variety of exercises to help here. The later books in the series (Threes, Fours, and Fives) would also be a great resource for a homeschooling parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Active Learning for Infants
Not just for daycare!I am a first-time, stay-at-home mom and needed away to tell if I was "doing all the right stuff" in regards toplay, development, speech, music, etc. This book gives you exercises thatare so easy for each stage of the first year of life. There is not a lotto read like a typical baby care book, but each section outlines what thechild should be accomplishing and gives you exercises to ensure that yourchild reaches those development milestones. If you can look past the ideathat it is written for daycare providers, you will find this book extremelyhelpful.I knew I was giving my child all he needed because I had theseexercises to use as a handy guide.Good luck to you! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars School Psychologist's Bible
A phenomenal book that gives a good overview of each of the main tests used by school psychologists, and has many tables and lists that help with report writing. There's also a section that highlights good/bad reports and the reasons why. When I was a student this was a necessary tool.As a first year school psychologist I still refer to it.Beware that there is a supplement that now goes with it as this book came out before the WISC-IV.Hence, you may want to check to see if Sattler is bringing out a new book in the near future and hold off for that to avoid having to buy both the book and the supplement. That's why I gave only 4 stars. It's expensive but well worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Dissappointed
I am very dissappointed in this arrangement, or thereof. I placed this order the first week of September, it is now Mid-November, and I stil have not received it. I have never had a problem before and now am reconsidering using this site ever again. I needed this book for class and have had to look off of others. This has been a horrible experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "bible" for school psychologists
This book is essential for those who are studying to be, working as or working closely with school psychologists. The only thing lacking in Sattler's publication is a more thorough coverage of the Woodcock-Johnson assessments. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Developing Talent in Young People
Bloom's study helps those seriously interested in understanding the differences between different kinds of talent and it can be nurtured. The study describes how the nurturance of gifted athletes and musicians takes adifferent path than that of intellectually gifted young people. It pointsout that the families do not choose between the intellectual and athleticareas but follow the talents manifested by their children. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest
An excellent book for those looking to learn more about trauma and its relationship to attachment.James does a wonderful job of laying a foundation of understanding, and expanding it to helpful techniques for both parents and professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting RAD
Beverly provides helpful methods for parenting and understanding Reactive Attachment disordered children. Her suggestions often work.Parents and therapists who use this approach need to be very patient and understanding and focus on positive interaction with the child. Some Reactive Attachment Disordered children are very difficult and sometimes violent.Means of managing the chronic disturbing behavior and the violence are essential. This book is only partially helpful in this regard. If you have a very difficult child and are feeling desperate for help, this book is not for you.Beverly spends much of her energy in the book panning holding therapy and trying to prove that it promotes trauma bonds which she is never able to prove.Trauma bonds are temporary and tenuous.Further, Beverly is convinced that all holding therapy is abusive which is also a claim she does not prove. Many parents find non-intrusive holding therapy helpful. The book is a good one if you can ignore Beverly's agenda against holding therapies and the `prisoner of war' arguments she promotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was awesome!
I read it when I was pregnant with my son and have never forgotten it.I highly recommend it to anyone that is pregnant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great insight for its time, a little dated/elementary for those familiar
Dr. Verney was certainly a pioneer and remains a leader in the field of pre and perinatal psychology. This book is a good primer, filled with citations and references. If, like me, you are someone familiar with the ideas presented, this book may seem elementary. I would have preferred to purchase one of his more recent titles with updates to his theories. This book is a little bit of singing to the choir, not a wholly dispassionate scientific study but that doesn't detract from its central message that the pre and perinatal environment matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every pregnant parent
This book throws light on the serious physical, psychological damages caused to humans from the type of birth experience and womb life they have.It is purely based on scientific studies and is a great eye-opener to modern medicine and its attitude towards birth.Today's moms are drugged heavily, split open and babies dragged out.And today's youngsters are just a reflection of those birth experiences.Studies show that children of moms who take pain relieving drugs during labor are more prone to abuse of drugs later in life. We just lost that loving tender moments of birth and its place in family. This books supports the Natural Childbirth and the fact that the unborn child does have a consciousness from the moment of conception.I have experienced certain moments in my pregnancy with my first kid, whenever I was depressed,or angry or broke down,I could immediately feel the baby kicking frantically and squirming about, and I would immediately stop at least for the sake of my baby.I remember an incident when a friend of mine came upto me once and cried about how her husband was treating her badly. She had a 4 month old son in her arms.Whenever she cried, the child would look at her frightened and cry with her. Each emotions the mother goes through, including her negative emotions like anger, sadness, unforgiveness, rejection etc can be sensed by the baby in her womb. And if we want our baby to be healthy, along with good nutrition,we should keep a good mental hygiene too, keeping away bad thoughts, resolving any past hurts and problems, being happy and loving your baby abundantly in your womb. This makes it easier for the baby to enter the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally, a readable and up-to-date book for professionals
As a recent counseling graduate (PhD), I was always put off by the art therapy books on the market. They were all so poorly written and talked about antiquated theories of counseling and therapy. Now, finally there is a wonderfully readable text and I am glad to have found it as I begin work with clients. This book is for anyone who is interested in using art in their work with adults, children, adolescents, and groups-- there are helpful chapters on trauma, medical issues, autism, ADHD, etc. There are also sections on art therapy assessments that are very well written and concise. 3-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD
This book is a very good "first book" to start with if you are researching how to help your child. It is written in simple terms that parents can understand. It gives helpful tips on setting up your child's environment in order to help them be more successful.I have read many books on this subject, and this is a staple book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ADD/ADHD Checklist
This is an excellent, reader-friendly guide to ADD/ADHD.It is useful for parents and teachers alike, an it allows the reader to get answers to their questions quickly by simply looking through the detailed subject index totheir specific issue.Topics like medication alternatives, specificapproaches for parents, educational guidelines, and teaching strategies arebut a few of the topics covered in this book.As an educator withexperience dealing with ADHD children, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent friendly, excellent parenting guidelines
I picked up this book in order to research ADD/ADHD in response to my child's teachers suggestions that he may be such a child. This book is written in such clear terms that it de-mystifies this all enveloping area.It contains simple to follow checklists. But it's best feature for parentsare the numerous suggestions for supporting your child at home and atschool. I felt enpowered by it to gain help for my child who is possiblyborderline ADD, but to me seems like a regular boy who does not likeputting much effort into school work and resents homework. The label ADD isfrightening, but by no means suggests that your child should be medicated. This book supported my search for alternatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive and difficult, but rewarding!
This is my text book for Developmental Cognitive Psychology. Many of the references are within a few years of publication, but it also doesn't neglect Piaget. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressions
Just like the mother-infant bond makes an indelible impression on the infant, this book's observations gives lasting insight into developmental psychology.Once you dredge through the early chapters' technical and academic expostions, you will learn alot from the individual cases.I plan to revisit this work as I continually encounter children in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The exelent book for checking of development of my children
I saw the videoversion of this book and translate it in to Russian language for my work. I'm impressed by language of discussing. It's very clever and needed book for every young and not very young mother. I'd liketo have this book but I live in Russia and I have no idea how I can do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
I own literally dozens of books on ADHD and have read dozens more. This slim book (only about 125 pages) is absolutely one of the best.I ordered it on the recommendation of a friend and when it arrived I was disappointed to see such a thin book. How could it add anything I didn't already know?Well, it did!It sums up the latest in scientific approaches to ADHD, de-bunks the myths and presents it all as clearly and concisely as I have ever seen.An excellent investment!

I only wish this book was available for me when my daughter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome back when she was 12.By the time ADHD was diagnosed she was 19 and we had gone through many years of disruption and blame.I will recommend this book to family and friends.Read more
