5-0 out of 5 stars Gold Standard
I used this book in grad school--it is the gold standard in MMPI coverage, clinical uses, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for MMPI-2'ers.
I have used this text for my graduate class I teach on the MMPI-2.It isan excellent text. Very comprehensive. My graduate students found it veryhelpful in learning to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of theMMPI-2.Awareness of any tests strengths/limitations is crucial to theappropriate use of all psychological tests.Learning to appropriatelyutilize this test as part of a psychological screening or battery iscritical for the training of all clinical psychologists.Graham does anexcellent job of presenting the information in a readable andunderstandable format.

5-0 out of 5 stars An updated edition to a classic guide and text to the MMPI
This is a superbly useful, updated version of his prior work on MMPI-2 interpretation. As always, Dr. Graham hits the bullseye for clinical usefulness and readability. His interpretive strategy is thorough andpragmatic. While others base their interpretative statements on clinicallore and antedotes, Dr. Graham backs up his interpretations with research. This text is a "must-have" for anyone who administers theMMPI-2--students and clinicians alike. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read
This book is very hard to read. There are citations throughout the text, and the information is not divided into many sections. The text is small, there are no graphics, key words or chapter summaries. Its a lot of valuable infomation, if you can keep your eyes open long enough to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, but advanced text
I use this text for my graduate class in child behavior disorders. I also used the first edition. In terms of level, it falls at the very top of the spectrum. It is by far the most complete and rigorously empirical text available.Discussion is sophisticated and thorough. In fact, it is almost possible to use this text without primary source supplements.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Groundbreaking Classic on Young Child Development
This first volume of John Bowlby's trilogy on Attachment and Loss expands and builds upon an article he published in 1958 in the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis titled "The Nature of the Child's Tie to His Mother", which is perhaps a more telling title than that of the book itself. Attachment, as a technical term in behavioural biology, is first used in describing instinctive mother-following behaviours of young mammals and birds (first observed and reported in delightful accounts by the Austrian ethologist Konrad Lorenz in the 1930's).
5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal work. Not yet surpassed
The work of John Bowlby (who was most certainly not a Behaviorist) is the work of genius. His importance in the field of developmental psychology has yet to be surpassed. It cannot be minimized.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete Perspective and "Bad Science"
This is a behaviorists attempt to explain a concept that has been recognized by poets for millennia;"love."While the behaviorist's perspective is perhaps a valid one, Bowlby attempts to "prove" the existence of a "primary attachment" (a concept first advanced by Freud in 1912)through a science experiment not worthy of a 7th grader. He then attempts to support that "proof" with anecdotal evidence.Virtually every premise presented by Bowlby was destroyed by the work of Dr. Michael Lamb shortly after Bowlby published "Attachment" (See "The Role of Father").Read this book if you have insomnia. But under NO circumstances should this book be viewed as authoritative in the development of children. ... Editorial Review

Today's responsible parents strive to raise children with healthy egos. But for a lot of adults, the word "ego" carries the negative connotation of "narcissism." Traditionally, the "good" child learned self-control, self-denial and placed parental needs and wishes first. If those needs were abusive to the child, there was no choice but to block the hurtful behavior in order to hold onto adults who were loved and needed.Miller recognized the link between certain emotional problems in adulthood and repressed childhood anguish. Her ideas in this pioneering study are a must-read for anyone seeking truth about the roots of suffering in childhood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating But Extremely Valuable
It is unsurprising that Alice Miller's Drama of the Gifted Child has met with a certain amount of hostility from both the psychiatry and psychotherapy establishments. After all, she frowns both on the use of drugs and cognitive-behavioral techniques as treatments for anxiety--especially in children. She even suggests that those who would use such remedies may have unaddressed psychological problems of their own. What's worse, she appeals to no empirical studies (double-blind or not) in reaching these conclusions; in fact, a reader might be reluctant to conclude from this book that Miller would even be capable of assessing the value of a careful scientific study of this or that anti-anxiety treatment. So, as I've indicated above, this book is often very frustrating. But Miller's work is also quite valuable, at least in my opinion. Like Freud's contemporary Wilhelm Stekel, Miller may not be a systematic theoretician, but her extensive clinical experience has provided her with several important insights that I believe may be useful, particularly to parents of anxious children.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beware
If you are like me:if you have a LOT of emotional baggage, and have only begun to scratch the surface of the damage done to your fragile psyche in early childhood, please take seriously this warning.
5-0 out of 5 stars The core of much suffering
A book which goes straight to the essence of much of today's suffering...narcisistic disturbances as not one amongst many disturbances, but the one underlying them all.It is a book for everyone, and most especially for young parents, as the newborn child makes us live again all our unresolved stuff. This book should be recommended as educational material as it enlightens parents to choose not to repeat their own stories with their children. Excellent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child's Work: The Importance of Fantasy Play
I enjoy all of Vivian Paley's books, but this one is especially timely and pertinent since I am part of a kindergarten readiness transition team for a school district in Pennsylvania.Ms. Paley is very clear about the importance of playduring the early childhood years and brings her beliefs across in a simple and convincing format.I bought a copy for each member of our team with the hope that it will illicit thoughtful discussion and lead us toward some needed changes in our views of what is significant in our relationships, interactions and guidance of young children as we make policies, and set out to prepare children for elementary school and beyond. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Diamonds In The Rough Need Polishing
This book is one of the gems -- a diamond in the rough -- on parenting. Written in simple language, it's the "basic course" on "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS". So read, use, and understand. Hmm. Understand? What do you do when the kids ask, "WHY?"! Hmm. You'll need a book that makes you understand -- in simple language -- the philosophy of WHY character counts, of right and wrong, of good and evil, of moral and immoral, and of ethical and unethical. The school that exists to teach the "advanced course" in "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG, MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS" is West Point. The only book that explains the philosophy behind all the "WHYS" -- in simple language -- is the book titled "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick. It's THE companion book for all how-to books and "courses", basic or advanced, on parenting and character. It will become kind of an encyclopedia that you can refer to for explaining "WHY?" to your kids. And it will give Borba's diamond in the rough its required polish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader Review
This is just an awesome book.As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way.Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest.great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life.Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for this Great Book!
I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets of 'The Secret of Childhood'
Since 1936, when her seminal work 'The Secret of Childhood' was first published, Maria Montessori has been the leading figure in promoting a holistic education approach to children of all ages.Concepts as radical as the three fundamental freedoms (the freedom to repeat work, the freedom to move around the classroom and the freedom to choose which work they want to do) that each child should have, blast forth form the pages like a breaking news story.5-0 out of 5 stars Montessori's Philosophy is respectful and beautiful.
This as well as many books written by Dr. Montessori are enlightening, educational and serve as a model for all parents raising children today. Her vision of peace and all of her teachings need to be brought to responsible parents and care givers. Children are our future....peace was Maria Montessori's vision....teach it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompetent preaching and ignorant theories
I had high expectations for this book based on prior reviews, and was severely disappointed.Instead of expected profound insights into child psychology and wise practical advices, I founda wordy discourse on the life of bees and butterflies, shallow preaching, and amazing ignorance. As a child psychologist she is plain incompetent. One example:describing a situation where a child started crying when a stranger brought in an umbrella and put it on a table, and stopped crying when the umbrella was taken away, the author attributed the crying to some mysterious "love of orderliness" in babies, instead of realizing the obvious fact that the child was simply scared of a large unfamiliar object, as is often the case with small babies. The author is ignorant in general science as well. For example, she claims the knowledge of human anatomy didn't exist at all untill 17th century, completely ignoring the rich experience of ancient Egyptians etc.Overall, this book is outdated, ignorant, and shallow, and is of little practical help in bringing up children. ... I really, really love this book. As I was reading, I thought of many people I would like to share it with. Even after living with this disease for 5 years, I still found much to learn. I saw my kids, and I caught a glimmer of what they must be experiencing, but cannot express in words. Thank you so much for writing it......Mother of two children with bipolar disorder

If you have ever wondered what it must be like to be a child with Bi-polar disorder then you must read Intense Minds. It offers an insight to such a depth of feeling, that it is hard to look at these children the same way ever again. I hope that anyone who has any contact with such a child would read this book and understand the chaos reigning in such a small place.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner
If you work with underprivileged kids, as I do, you will find this book's exercises very difficult to use.The exercises requiresustained attention for reading long passages, and the vocabulary level is extremely high, even for my 7th grade clients. Many exercises require critical thinking and creative writing skills, which my client's have great difficulty with as well. Most inner city kids I work with are performing 2-3 grade levels behind, and look at me like I am crazy when I try to do these exercises with them.5-0 out of 5 stars Child Homework Planner Review
I feel this book is an excellent resource for students, teachers, family, and clinicians. I use this book on a regular basis, incorporating each homework assignment into each session and treatment plan. It is very helpful in defining the appropriate technique to a specific problem area. This book gives specific homework assignments for particular diagnoses. As clinicians, we can use this book to explore assignments other clinicians have found useful. We can also increase our knowledge of new homework assignments. This book is different to other books due to its specificity to various childhood disorders. I recommend counseling classes use this book as a guide to learn techniques. I also recommend families to read this book and try out the homework assignments. As a psychotherapist, I have found this book to be a highly effective tool in my everyday work with childhood disorders. ... Read more

Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent case history guide to EMDR with children
Dr. Lovett, the clinical detective (behavioral pediatrician) writes poignant analyses of her work with childhood traumas great and small, in which she applies the bilateral stimulation techniques of EMDR. Her writingstyle iseasy to read, and demonstrates the relative rapidity of traumaresolution when EMDR is properly interwoven into more traditional therapy. Her book is a valuable guide for clinicians skilled in the EMDR technique,as well as informative for parents considering such treatment for theirchild. As an EMDR therapist who teaches workshops on treating children, Ihighly recommend this engaging volume. Frances Klaff Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing stories of recovery from trauma!
This is a well-written book about a pediatrician's experience with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming) as a healing tool for people suffering from the results of traumatic incidents. It would appealto laymen as well as professionals. The intriguing stories are like littlemysteries, which unravel in a hopeful way. The author experienced a seriouscar accident and was finally helped to overcome some puzzling symptoms withEMDR. She got training in the technique and began using it (with greatsuccess) in her practice. This book is alive with vignettes of childrenwith problems that no one has been able to fix, but who have responded toEMDR. This compelling book would appeal to anyone interested in a shortterm method of overcoming limiting behaviors. ... Read more
