4-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for new parents
There have been so many times since my son was born that I've wondered just what's going on in there. How we can wordlessly communicate, and how much I think he really understands about what's going on around him. This book does an excellent job of demystifying the mind of a baby and explains it in an engaging way. A perfect gift for new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-writen survey of current developmental psychology
This book is a concise, readable summary of recent science on baby brain development.A nice antidote to all the urban-legend-based/ new-age/ guilt-and-paranoia/ baby literature out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Between Scientific American and Dr. Spock ...
... there's a distinct need for a book between the "how-to" manuals like Dr. Spock and the "hard science" works in Scientific American and scholarly journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son conquered his OCD with help from this book
After searching the internet and reading many books for information in an effort to understand the condition my son suddenly developed, many references were made to this treatment manual.Although I am only a parent, and this book is meant for therapists, I decided to purchase it anyway.Along with my son's therapist and a low dose of medication, we used the methods and suggestions in this book to overcome his OCD.The real therapy happens at home with strong family involvement and support, so parents need to fully understand what they need to do.This book clearly guides you through the exposure and response prevention therapy steps, which is the only therapy that will help someone overcome OCD.Although I found some parts to be technical, rereading them helped me understand them better.I recommend this book for motivated parents, children & adolescents who want to overcome their OCD.The therapy is hard work, but after several weeks, you will be much better!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have treatment manual
John March is author of one of the best treatment manuals I have ever laid my eyes on. He and Mulle have laid out in very clear fashion what steps to follow in treating OCD in a child or adolescent. They add tips on what to do when problems arise and include gems of clinical knowledge that make this a must have resource for anyone treating OCD. While the book is about treating children and adolescents I have found it helped me think more clearly about doing the same type of treatment with adults. This book is directed toward the therapists who may not have a backround in cognitive behavioral treatment and explains some concepts that may seem strange to those from other backrounds. It is not written for parents but I have recomended it to them since there is little else around that explains things any where near as clearly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Concerned
If you suspect you or your child has ADHD ("A.D.D." is not the correct acronym), please look elsewhere for treatment and practical strategies.Any ADHD intervention book worth its salt includes a variety of approaches to treatment. If you want to avoid medication, there are plenty of options - this book is nothing novel. However, medication does work best for many children and adults and the benefits definitely outweigh the "costs" (which are relatively minor - these medications are considered quite safe).Stimulant medications do not "change" children's personalities or "break" their spirits - they help them improve their ability to function academically, emotionally, and socially. Why wouldn't you want these things for your child? Please talk to a physician or psychologist and ask for book recommendations. This book is a waste of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting. Translating it was a good experience
I found it very interesting. I learned so many things I did not know about this theme. I am not an especialist in the field. As a matter of fact, I am a translator and I had to choose a text as a final "work" to getmy college degree; so I picked this up because I thought it could be ofhelp for the kinesiologists and all therapists in the reabilitationinstitution whereit was provided to me. As a book, I think it is brief, complete, explicative, easy-reading. I am sure it is an excellent readingand handbook for any especialist in the field, and believe me, I am quitecertain of that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars dealing with your kids and spouse!
Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline has been a great tool. Not only for raising my children but also in dealing with my husband and students. I've applied the skills to my daily life and have found that I am a calmer person as a result. This book can be read in sections, at a fast or slow pace, and reread to regain some composure.Becky Bailey has provided insight in how to make life much more enjoyable at home!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
I am a trained professional nanny and have over 20 years experience and I am also a mother. I have read so many parenting books through nanny school, my 2 yr vocational program, and for fun...And this is by far one of the best books I have read. There have only been a few that really stood out and were books that I knew I wanted to own, this is one. I also suggest to all my families that have been/are in my family daycare to read this one. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation for my instincts!
I read this book on the recommendation of my parent educator, who thought Becky Bailey's philosophy would resonate with my instictive parenting style. She was so right! This is the first dicipline book that I have felt provided practical guidance for becoming not only a better parent, but also a more emotionally mature person.I am using her techniques and feel so much more comfortable with them than with more traditional consequence-based approaches.Although consequences may be used with Bailey's Loving Guidance, too, the emphasis is on helping the child to learn self-discipline.The child's will is respected, and the parent is held accountable for cultivating her/his own self-discipline.My son is only 17 months old, but I can already see that Loving Guidance is more effective than anything else I have tried, and using this style of discipline has increased the peace in both my household and my heart.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who chooses gentle, loving guidance over guilt, shame and regret.Attached parents will love it. ... Margureite Wright has her head on straight. A great book. Should be in every parent and teachers library, whether they have black or bi-racial children in their lives or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight into black and biracial children's thoughts
My husband and I are white. We adopted a biracial girl last year. One of our challenges in raising our daughter is how to provide her with her african american heritage and culture. We have black friends and women who have taught me to do her hair and how to care for her skin, but we know that that is not enought. This book helped us to understand issues about race and culture differences and how children perceive these issues. It is written beautifully and has truly opened our eyes to issues that our daughter might face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I loved this book. It gave me an insight on what African American kids experience in a way that I have never found in other books. As a mother of an adopted African boy I recommend this book to anyone who has an adopted African American child. This books is better than any book I have read when the author is white and talking about African American kids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9.Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book.We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifcbooks.The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process.By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions.Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context.Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists.Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it.I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them)helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spells out the unique dangers of teen drinking
Having navigated through the rocks and landmines of parenting three boys through adolescence, I know that drinking, at least occasionally, can be a part of the journey. We never encouraged it, never "enabled" it, never denied it.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the elements of a fantastic read are here!
As someone who has experienced the wrath of addiction up close and personally in family members - as have most of us - and been disappointed in the lack of personal stories focused on recovery, communication and scope of the issue, I was at first skeptical of this book when I read about it in a People magazine feature recently; I doubted its substantiality. But I was won over within just a few pages. This educational and readable work is the real deal. Attributes I noticed as I screamed through this page-turner:

2-0 out of 5 stars find another book
Makes a few accurate observations about boy behavior and its origins, however, the book leans a little too much toward "feminization" of boys in preventing behavioral problems. This may be the politically-correct way to help boys, but not the productive way.The book is also on the new york times best-seller list, this is significant, because that publication is notorious for being the most anti-male biased newspaper in the united states.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you raising boys today?
If you are raising boys today I suggest reading this book before they enter the school system! Is he in school and saying things like, "that's gay" or "fag"? Sure he is, we raise them that way and don't even know it.

The author makes some fantastic points in the first hundred or so pages in this book.He then makes those points over and over again until they have lost all meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look--Bowen's definitely got something.
This is a well organized, thoughtful book telling the origins and details of Bowen theory. I particularly like the many cases covered in this book. It appears that they got promising results in helping families with schizophrenic children. There is also a chapter where Dr. Bowen talks about his own efforts at differentiating within his family of origin. It's one thing to talk theory--another to apply it to yourself and then write about it. Fantastic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book if you know any people
It's rare to find books that are both academically credible and accessible to the layperson. This book is the exception, and the content is truly life changing. It is unfortunate that most of the people who read this book are psychologists or psychiatrists who see it as "just another method" and go back to their simplistic "find the problem and fix it" techniques.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book if you know any people

5-0 out of 5 stars An enormously important book.
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized.Just as unfortunately, research intochildren's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lagbehaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movementdesensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapistsRobert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellinglyreadable form, the techniques they have used successfully with childrenfrom Oklahoma City to Rwanda.Geared equally to the child clinicianinterested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDRpracttioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through themystery to illuminate the method."It's like you took a magicwand, and said'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexuallyabused when she was 18months old.Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDRat work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acuteand ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of aparent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of abitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing withproblems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD,simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adultapplications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, andmodify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages ofdevelopment. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate formost children under age five, but they respond well to other forms ofleft-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonlyaccompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of someEMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they haveincluded plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage youngclients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--mostimportantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't beoveremphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned towhen necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDRwith other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are includedas well. With clients this young, significant results often come atan accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used toconducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described theeffect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of mybrain."

5-0 out of 5 stars I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is animportant reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps onlybecause the general standard is so high that one expects this work to bethe fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text aboutEMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blendedlike a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidencebased fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with arare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfactionwhen you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by theauthors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data.Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher andcompassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their timeto fellow professionals and patients. I will unreservedly recommend thebook to all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Look at Adolescent Culture
This book presents a comprehensive view of adolescent psychology. In the first half of the book the author, F. Philip Rice, includes a chapter describing such common adolescent tehories as those of Piaget and Erikson, and presents the strengths and weaknesses of each theory. He also devotesa chapter to adolescent physical development. From reading the first fewchapters, it seems like a standard college textbook. What sets this bookapart from many textbooks dealing with this subject, however, is its focuson diversity issues and adolescent culture.Read more
