5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I have been working with adolescents in conflict with the law for approximately 12 years as well as with their families. This is one of the most comprehensive guides I have ever seen. Power and compassion is the other one near the top by Jerome Price. Every one of the interventions in this book have been used by me with the families I work with. For those criticising the severity of the interventions I would think that the clients you are working with would be higher functioning than the pre-contemplative childhood onset conduct disorder kids mandated by the courts for treatment. Only 10% of my referrals have a parent willing to attend. If the police are supportive in your community, then use them but we all know this is not the norm. The book explains clearly how to restrain without being abusive. BTW almost all of these kids get worse before they get better (extinction burst) so plan for it ahead of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not All It's Cracked Up To Be
I was very disappointed in this book and felt that many of the treatment techniques and ideas presented in the book/model were simply common sense for professionals such as myself who have been treating families for several years. Perhaps it would be more beneficial for those counselors who are just out of school or new to the field. Even more surprising were some of the interventions outlined in the book that I quite frankly felt could do more harm than good to the adolescent and the family and even bordered on abusive. As a clinician, I try to keep an open mind but strongly disagree with some of the author's approaches and hope parents who purchase the book seek the assistance of a professional therapist if they attempt these potentially harmful interventions on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treating The Tough Adolescent
Agree overall with Ed Chapin's review. As a parent of a teen with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, who had his toe across the line of Conduct Disorder, I have read many books. This by far the best.It helped me to get control of my son and change our family's path better than the Psychiatrist, Therapist, or Juvenile Probation Department were able to.Only exceptions I take to his approach is in regards to takedowns and time commitment expection of treating therapist.Takedowns potentially very dangerous with the type kids (and parents) the treatment model is geared to.The expectation for a therapist to be available (to the extent described) 24 hours a day 7 days a week is unrealistic.Any therapist that would make the commitment called for by Dr. Sells is a workaholic! Otherwise, the book is very informative, clear and concise. After reading, I had a much stronger grasp of how we got to where we were and the changes necessary.I believe the knowledge gained from the book contributed immensely in sucessfully working with the therapist who helped us. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars negative reviews?
The negative reviews of this book are completely off the mark.It is NOT anti-female and Mr.Gurian is NOT a "closet misogynist" nor is he promoting a "dangerous" book. The author does reveal alot of passion and genuine concern for the problems facing boys, and he recognizes something that all teachers and parents should recognize, that boys and girls are different(hate to repeat the phrase, but people dont seem to be getting it)and that boys should NOT be feminized at home or in school.Being more physical, more aggressive, more competitive,is hard-wired into a boys being..it is not something that should be stifled with medication or unnecessary punishment.Boys need some boundaries and some discipline, sure, but they dont need to have what makes them boys taken away from them. This book does not have an "agenda",but the fems who condemn it certainly do.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is a valuable resource
I'm shocked this book has gotten such bad reviews here. I've read it twice in my son's first year! I will probably read it again in a few years. I wish everyone who cares for or teaches boys would read this book. He tells about the differences between the male brain and the female brain. He stresses the importance of teaching boys spituality (not religion, just spirituality) and responsibility. There is a section in the book about how to talk to boys about sex and why it is so important. As a mother, I find this book to be very important and I've marked sections for my husband to read. Let's be realistic about the differences between boys and girls. While there are always exceptions, boys and girls do tend to be different in certain ways and this book is about how to raise and discipline a boy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all "boys will be boys"
Yes, it is true that social and medical science have established a physiological basis of greater aggression among boys:namely testosterone, which should surprise no one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new parents
I used this book for a psych class I had (not with one of the authors, but with one of their colleagues at the same university; had one of the authors for my general psych class though :).It is a great resource for new parents because it tells you what's going on throughout your child's development and things you can do to help stimulate them at various stages along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-read for all parents and educators
We used this text in a child development class with one of the authors as professor. The writing is clear and easy to understand, yet the text is filled with great research examples.I wish I would have read this PRIORto having a child! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Its Easy Yet It's Tough
An excellent book for parents who have the time to slow down and seriously reflect life purposes before LIFE is living us instead of vice versa.3-0 out of 5 stars overscheduled author
While reading the book, one may get the feeling that the author may have been over scheduled. There are a few chapters that tell us to do just the opposite of what he just said in a previous one.The book is pretty good with ideas we all know but may need to be reminded of.It's a pretty good read especially if you do not get too caught up in the areas that seem to fall intoHyper Parenting and then find out what you thought he was talking about turns out to be not what he said in the first place.I agree with another reviewer, it's confusing in a couple of spots. It's not much different from other books on similar subjects.I like the guy and have heard him speak.I blame any discrepancies within the book on the editors. It amazes me how some books can cover the same thing over and over and still get 5 stars or as much publicity as they do.In the real world, within any family who have children in various activities, there's a couple of other books that cover similar behaviors and challenges that would be of further benefit, one of those being Mommy-CEO, Revised Edition, by family/parenting expert and syndicated columnist, of Parent to Parent, Jodie Lynn, and The Successful Child, by William Sears. Both books point blank tell parents how to help kids turn out well and to still take out time for ourselves but do not give conflicting advice about doing it.I am a fan of almost all of the Sears' books and find useful information in Lynn's books and columns. My suggestion is that some point in time The Over-Scheduled Child may need a small overhaul with maybe a different editor but same author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, but not too well executed
Hyper-Parenting possesses the best of intentions, and is not lacking in insight and even, in places, eloquence. But the overall message is confusing and disjointed, and I was left unsatisfied in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is hope and there is help!
I normally wouldn't respond to a review of my own book, but I couldn't let this one go.
2-0 out of 5 stars Anecdotal with a lot of grasping at straws
The focus of the book seems to be how to try every snake oil solution first, add in a lot of prayer and then seek help from qualified ABA therapists. It is informational and a good read - for what NOT to do. Try - 'Overcoming Autism' as your first book - Lynn Koegel and Claire LaZebnik. I give it two stars since it doesn't really educate how to approach autism so much as how NOT to approach autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The #1 Intro Book
As the parent of an Autistic son, I cannot say how appreciative I was to have found this book. When you first hear of Autism and think that your child could be on the spectrum, you can feel lost. When we were looking at where to turn, we found Lynn's book. The wonderful thing is that the book gives you hope mixed with lots of practical advice and some ideas on where to turn.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!
After purchasing a number of books that promised to deliver, this is the first one that I have found that actually does. As the parent of a six year-old little-man, I have to say that I really needed this book and I honestly believe that the material inside its pages, when applied consistently, will serve to seriously improve my son's life in due course. I am truly impressed with the level of insight brought to bear by these three authors; I applaud them on a fantastic work!

Editorial Review

One troubled child channels her pain into art; another vents his anguish in destructive acts. What makes the critical difference in the way each translates childhood suffering? Combing the life histories of Picasso, Buster Keaton, Nietzsche, Hitler and others, Miller concludes that the presence of an enlightened witness--someone who offers a contrast to cruelty--tips the balance between constructive expressions of "forgotten" trauma and repetitions of internalized inhumanity. She argues eloquently throughout that when adult authoritarian needs suppress children's true needs, there are dangerous societal consequences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Insight
In The Untouched Key, the great psychiatrist Alice Miller has written another penetrating work about the manifestation of subconscious experiences into the conscious world. As far as I am concerned, most of the more recent modern writers on the subject have little to add to works like this one. Here is a highly respected and successful therapist, who went out on a limb and confessed to her colleagues, at a time when she could have been basking in the glory of seniority, that she finally realized she only went into the field to learn how to heal her own pain; and then had the courage to withdraw her membership from psyciatric associations once she realized their hypocrisy (which she took full responsibility for in herself, as well). 5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifying Childhood
This is one of the most important books you could ever read.It takes the world of childhood to a place you will never forget. As Miller walks you through her interpretations of the lives and self expression of Keaton, Nietzsche, Picasso, Kollwitz and others, you will learn intuitively how to interpret things the way she does. There is a loss of innocence in this process so it is a kind of initiation which comes to the depths of your soul.Your life will be much richer for this knowlege and your understanding of children and the inner child of every adult you know will be that much riper.Once you have read this book, you will wonder how you could ever have been so DEAF and so DUMB and so BLIND!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Through the looking glass
I think it is time that ALice Miller recieve the credit due her for her enormous efforts in uncovering coded childhood trauma. Her tireless work has had an transformative and empowering impact on my life and the way Iview my childhood and children. In this book Alice uncovers what somepeople want to view as a "masterpieces" of "ART"."What is really going on here?"she asks. "Look deeper..whatis this artist trying to communicate". At times Alice observes andbrings to light that the artist is screaming.THis book is SO important! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL RESOURCE
WORRIED NO MORE by Dr. Aureen Pinto Wagner is a very comprehensive and informative book designed to help parents, school personnel and mental health professionals deal with anxious children and adolescents. The second edition has a completely new look making it even more reader friendly, practical and easy to use. Dr. Wagner uses her vast knowledge of and empathy toward anxious children to provide specific strategies as well as forms and tools for decreasing and managing anxiety. I have found these strategies to be highly effective. I often use her forms and tools when I treat anxious youth (and adults). I highly recommend this book to mental health professionals, school personnel and parents of anxious children.

I've ordered several books to better understand my daughter's OCD but since she is not the traditional "hand-washer" the books didn't help. This book does.It explores so many facets of OCD that I didn't see (nor did her psychologist) before. It has helped me look at my daughter's behaviors in a new way and see the disease manifest itself in ways I never thought of before.I would highly recommend this easy-to-read book to anyone who has a child with OCD and/or anxiety problems. It was exactly what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for anyone working with anxious children
Dr. Wagner's expertise comes alive in this practical guidebook for anyone who is trying to help an anxious child get up and over the "worry hill." The techniques are incredibly empowering for children of all ages and I have successfully used her step-by-step guidelines and easy to use forms. The children have really enjoyed the approaches and it has been a moving experience to watch them overcome their worse fears. I highly highly recommend this workbook and you will not be disappointed.
