5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Educational, and Very Important
This book is a must read for anyone who has experienced domestic violence or cares about someone who is experiencing it.No other book does as good of a job explaining why abusers do what they do.It is key to understanding the dynamic of these people and avoiding further damage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Made me want to leave my husband!
I can't really say that I hated this book or that I really liked it. I can say that it makes an abuser look REALLY bad and make you almost hate that person. It made me feel like my husband, even though he doesn't physically abuse me, knows what he's doing when he manipulates and frightens me. I have chosen to seek god for myself but it would be a sin to leave him. My husband is also a recovering alcoholic. Is he an abuser or an alcoholic? I don't know know, maybe he's both. Or maybe his parents were so screwed up with their own lives that my poor husband never got a chance to live a spiritual life. I do know that my husband as little to no self esteem and that is something that can be worked on I am sure. Men are delicate creatures in their emotions. Woman are much stronger, contrary to popular belief. A man will give an emotional answer to a practical question a lot. I would like a christian point of view when it comes to angry men and why they do the things they do and how to manage your family around it. I mean do I just let my husband yell at us ALL the time? The bible tells me to act one way but as a mother I feel it is my duty to stand in front of them and protect them from an emotionally abusive attack. So with that said, anyone have any suggestions? I am going to try Angry Men and the Women who love them. And see if that one is any better. I have heard it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A timely and extremely valuable eye-opener. Life and sanity saving!
This book was a Godsend. It was extremely useful in helping me understand the reasoning and motivation behind my husband's abusive behavior, and it gave me clear and compelling guidance about how to deal with it from the man recognized as the leading expert in this field. I have shared it with my pastor and intend to give copies to several dear counselors and friends who mean well and love me but aren't really familiar with the issues surrounding domestic violence and abuse. This book will give a great deal of valuable insight to anyone in need or interested in supporting others in crisis (both the battered and those who batter). I feel like it has truly been a life-line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and bad choices in financial trading
Having a choice in life is a good thing; a person without choices is often miserable. As the number of choices grows, our happiness grows with them, but then it begins to decline.Having too many choices creates stress.Schwartz describes his visit to a local supermarket: "...next to the crackers were 285 varieties of cookies.Among chocolate chip cookies there were 21 options. ... Across the isle were juices - 13 `sports drinks,' 65 `box drinks' for kids, 85 other flavors and brands of juices, and 75 iced teas and adult drinks.I could get these tea drinks sweetened (sugar or artificial sweetener), lemoned, and flavored. ... I found 61 varieties of suntan oil and sunblock, and 80 different pain relievers - aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen; 350 milligrams or 500 milligrams; caplets, capsules, and tablets; coated or uncoated. There were 40 options for toothpaste, 150 lipsticks, 75 eyeliners, and 90 colors of nail polish from one brand alone."
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting, thought, provoking, and immediately useful books I've read.
I read about 4 books per month and this is hands down one of the best ones I've read in the past year. Packed with information, yet enjoyable to read, I had a hard time putting this one down.
5-0 out of 5 stars F yeah
This book is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. The basic premise of this book is that the more choice we have, the more anxious we become about the decisions we have to make. Think for example, about how many different stores there are in a mall. You want to buy a dress shirt, but which store do you go into? Will the Gap have a better deal than Banana Republic? Or maybe Macy's or Lord & Taylor will have a better shirt. But then, which shirt do you pick once you decide what store to walk into? All these decisions prove to be quite exhausting, despite our unconscience ability to make such them on a constant basis.

The book is easy to read and it gives great examples to better understand the concepts.I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and applicable
The book treats many cases and reaches high level of coverage; it is very helpful, that in practice one can find many similarities, since the cases are very realistic and explained in depth. My opinion is, that it is valuable because it is applicable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, the tapes are even better
I have this book and it is excellent. I also got the 6-tape audio cassette package on Procrastination from Dr. Fiore, and it is excellent. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whew! Finally! Someone who understands.
This is the first book about procrastination that didn't leave me feeling like I had been beaten over the head with my "flaws". It was helpful to learn the reasons behind my procrastination, and to be given plans of action that make sense for those reasons. We are much more likely to grow through encouragement than through censure. This author's approach is esteemable.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's so good about this book
It may read kinda mushy, with all its talk of empowerment. But it has done one thing for me that no other book has. It gets to the root of procrastination and motivation problems, and you realize you are not wrong.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner
This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
This book can change not only the way that you think, but your life also. When we think we are talking to ourselves. And as the book clearly explains, we are only as good as we think, or say, we are. Many of us don't believe in our unlimited potential because life experience has told us not to. Trials and failures "tell" us that we have limits, weaknesses and excuses for failure, and over the years we begin to believe that. Why not change what we believe by changing our programming and our internal view of ourselves? This book makes it easy to begin doing so. This is more than a self-help, positive thinking book. This book is revolutionary, and if taken seriously, will change your life. I have started some of the techniques described in the book and can attest that this is powerful stuff. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a magnificent concept!
Most of us have read many self-help books in our quest for a better career, family life, social life, better us. Most of them have been insightful, some of them even truly helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self talk
I think this book is excellent. Very insightful in how our thought patterns affects our behavior. Great suggestions and examples on how we can reverse those negative thoughts to produce more positive and effective thought patterns. I would recommend this book to anyone who understands how powerful the messages that we send our brain and accepts the idea that we do have control to change the way we think. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars take a different class
After a semester using the text i have come to the conclusion that the authors, Brehm, Kassin, and Fein, leave more questions then answers and that their sub-par sense of humor is more then just a waste of money. After reading certain sections i get the feeling that the authors do not clearly understand the issue at hand, but rather throw 15 different research studies at the topic covering their uncertainty and topping it off with a dire attempt at a joke leaving the reader completely ambiguous.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
Easy to read yet scholarly. Great illustrations. Space in the margins for notes. Good chapter overviews and summaries. Nice T/F questions to prime the reader. Sources used appropriately. It is truly the ideal textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for using case studies in research
Case studies are very powerful yet often abused way of conducting research. Its often abused because the researcher or student does not know what constitutes good case study research.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on case study methodology
This book is perhaps the prime book for those conducting case studies for qualitative research in the social sciences. People have developed PhD methodology entirely based on the contents of this book. The third edition contains updated material and up-to-date citations and case study examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for scientists, under- or graduate students
Read it to prepare for my master's thesis and probably will use it for my doctoral thesis as well. Brings the detailed methodology for case study research in perfectly synchronized chapters. Extremely valuable information! Sometimes even Mr. Yin has so many info to provide he has some difficulty putting it all together, but after all everything makes a lot of sense. Has dozens of very good examples. I am purchasing "Applications of case study research" (the "sequel") because I was really satisfied for what I got in reading Case Study Reasearch (3rd ed). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A positive, worthwhile, and encouraging model for a vital question
-The authors helped found the Positive Psychology movement, which hopes to supplement psychology's current medical model ("find what's wrong, then fix it") with a model for positive health ("find what's right, then encourage it").Psychological health, which is not just an absence of disease, includes such things as character preparation, improved baseline happiness, realistic optimism, wisdom, and cognitive sophistication. The authors consider character and virtue indispensible for cultivating a good and positive life, and this book pioneers a method for classifying and evaluating them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes. It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior. If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Great Manual To Promote Mental Disorders !!!
The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

If you do a search of available Amazon books on professional and technical leadership you'll find about 60,000 entries. Many of these books will focus on the qualities possessed by great leaders or the characteristics one needs to be successful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very pragmatic, useful book - every manager should read it!
Alpha Male Syndrome is a very well written and very useful book. It breaks down the various types of alpha behavior in ways that make the information actionable - how to deal with an alpha boss or colleague, how to be a more effective alpha executive - and how to apply those lessons to improve your home life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents
My thoughts: Its well written-not verbose at all, each chapter is to the point with great suggestions. His points are based recent on scientific studies and are not from glossed over like many writers do who don't fully comprehend the research. the "mozart effect" is a perfect example. He tells you the limits of what the research shows, eg Dont plunck the kid in front of the stereo all day because thats not going to do much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Information for Parents
Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten is perhaps the most comprehensive book I've ever seen relating to enhancing our children's intelligence and paving the way for their future success. Dr. Perlmutter, a neurologist, not only provides the activities, lifestyle recommendations anf nutritional information to build a better brain, but he goes so far as to claim that as many as 30 IQ points are up for grabs and provides the hard core science to back it up. He shows us not only how to treat ADHD without medication, but more importantly, how we can easily prevent it in the first place. His unique schedule for immunizations is especially helpful. This is very important read for all parents and future parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that promotes creavitiy and skills development early in life
"Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten: Build a Better Brain and Increase IQ by up to 30 points" by David Md Perlmutter is a pretty good book which promotes creativity, skills development, and it reinforces common knowledge directed towards improving a child's mental skills prior to the elementary school years. Perlmutter provides readers with a list of tools that they can use specifically towards these purposes and advises against common pitfalls, such as excessive television viewing and video game playing. There are games that he offers which are geared towards improving skills development and he even speaks to advice that child rearers can use to ward off enemies of the brain. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Why not just kill your mother?
After hearing good things about the book I had hoped for some insight on how to change the approval seeking patterns developed from living in family where being good worked alot better than being authentic. Instead I got heavy handed criticism of "mothers" who warp their children through thier own selfish motivations. Some people may have parents who were intentionally cruel, but mine were just sad, depressed and inept. I spent so much effort defending them from this author's wrath, and perhaps anger at her own mother, that if there was any insight in this book about on how I might change my patterns of behavior I couldn't see it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating But Extremely Valuable
It is unsurprising that Alice Miller's Drama of the Gifted Child has met with a certain amount of hostility from both the psychiatry and psychotherapy establishments. After all, she frowns both on the use of drugs and cognitive-behavioral techniques as treatments for anxiety--especially in children. She even suggests that those who would use such remedies may have unaddressed psychological problems of their own. What's worse, she appeals to no empirical studies (double-blind or not) in reaching these conclusions; in fact, a reader might be reluctant to conclude from this book that Miller would even be capable of assessing the value of a careful scientific study of this or that anti-anxiety treatment. So, as I've indicated above, this book is often very frustrating. But Miller's work is also quite valuable, at least in my opinion.Like Freud's contemporary Wilhelm Stekel, Miller may not be a systematic theoretician, but her extensive clinical experience has provided her with several important insights that I believe may be useful, particularly to parents of anxious children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Looking back may be only way forward.
"The unexamined life is not worth living" wrote Socrates. If you find yourself on the path of this philosophy a good place to stop is with Alice Miller's short book, "Drama of the Gifted Child".The book, despite being written for therapist's, is unambiguous, easy to understand, and extremely compelling. The book addresses our secret-selves, which includes our subconscious selves, and asks the question, and I paraphrase here, how did you really feel back in the day? Miller contends that a trauma suffered in your young life will continue producing unhappiness, addiction, compulsion, fetishes, mental illness, and worse in your adult life. The only way out of pain is to face the truth. You must face what happened and how you really felt. Not how you were told to feel, not how you needed to feel to survive, not how you told yourself you should feel-- but how you really felt. This is easier read than done. The author states that you cannot undo the past, but through the process of mourning, obtained only by squarely facing the truth, you can free yourself and finally move forward. It is ultimately the story of your psychic pain and psychic redemption.Pain that could not be have been mourned at the point of trauma, and the devastating effects that pain can still be having on your life

Editorial Review

Does your spouse's need to alphabetically organize books on the shelves puzzle you? Do your boss's tsunami-like moods leave you exasperated? Do your child's constant questions make you batty? If you've ever wanted to change your mate, your coworkers, or a family member, then "Put down your chisel," advise David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates in this book of personality types. We are different for a reason, and that reason is probably more good than bad. Keirsey and Bates believe that not only is it impossible to truly change others (which they call embarking on a "Pygmalion project"), it's much more important to understand and affirm differences. Sounds easier than it is, you might say. Well, this book is a guide for putting an end to the Pygmalion projects in your life and starting on the path to acceptance. Read more

This book does not present any science. There are no references to experiments and the concepts lack precision and an evolutionary psychological framework. There is no reason given to believe such "character types" exist.
