5-0 out of 5 stars If Your Spouse Is Determined to Leave You, This is the Book To Get
I have not read this book. But I read the reviews. And 11 months ago, when my friend was leaving her husband, I got the book to him. A couple of weeks later, he called me and told me that this book changed his life. He said that based on this book, he changed his behavior, and then his wife changed her mind and agreed to go to marriage counseling. They found an excellent counselor and now they are together and happier than they have ever been.

5-0 out of 5 stars Title might turn away people that this book is good for
While the advice in the book appears to have been too late for me, the advice and strategies talked about in this book make a lot of sense and help to debunk a lot of traditional Freudian psychoanalytic therapy methods.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for any relationship having problems
I got this book not because I was headed for divorce, but having a difficult time in my marriage as happens to everyone that has been married for awhile. As a married person, I know my thoughts of "should I leave this?" are not all that uncommon in today's society. I was at a place where I was really asking myself that question. This book was really a lifesaver for me and my marriage when I got it. Michelle Weiner states "No marriage is an island".Some marital difficulties can be precipitate by happenings outside the marriage. It is easiest to blame the one's we are close to! This book helped me see how I myself often pointed accusational fingers at my husband, when I was truelly not always the one willing to work on things. I often blamed him when other areas of my life were not going well. My relationship has actually improved greatly for the better since I read this book which was six months ago. I was able to view Michele's philosophy that all marriages are salvagable, and most are worth saving. I saw mine that way. I remind myself of all the reasons why I married my husband, and keep myself in check now. I believe that this book is very helpful, and especially if a person wants to try to save a marriage that looks like it is heading for divorce. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars See Your Son or Your Students Here
The library at the college where I work puts out a list of new books they have purchased in our area once per month, and this book was on the psychology list back in January.I thought it looked interesting and picked it up then, thinking it might have some good things to say about a book I'm writing about men and depression.I finally picked it up and started reading it last week, and finished it in less than a week.I really enjoyed the authors' styles of writing which made some of the technical information more accessible and easier to understand, which to me means it would be a great resource for students studying education and for parents of boys of all ages.
5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's review
More informative than 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently,' 'The Minds of Boys' is a fascinating look into the specific reasons why boys are doing so poorly in school nowadays. Very, very awfulif you did not know - Boys are the overwhelming majority of special education students, are more likely to drop out, and are much less likely to attend college.
4-0 out of 5 stars A needed step forward for boys:
I really sympathize with Michael Gurian.I felt much the same way about the failures of the industrialized education system in the 1950s that he described a couple of decades later. It's set up to fail boys, and has gotten worse over the past several decades as men teachers have been driven out.

By melding love, science, and religion into a primer on personalgrowth, M. Scott Peck launched his highly successful writing and lecturing career withthis book. Even to this day, Peck remains at the forefront of spiritualpsychology as a result of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good example of selfishness
It is apparent that the first premise in Peck's book is that in order for humans to be a whole being, one must grow through spirituality (or enlightenment) attained through "grace" with the main purposes of gaining "capacity and understanding of serendipity" (309) and through "spiritual evolution, whereby people grow towards godhood" (270) and "become God" (283).
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
Peck's definition of love is unparalleled in any of the literature I have read concerning the matter. I have always been particularly fond of Kahlil Gibran's depiction of marriage and love. However, I feel that Peck redefines it in modern English and provides a contrast to the "mainstream" view of love and "falling in love."
4-0 out of 5 stars Life is difficult...
I read this book and the sequel, People of the Lie around the time that they came out.I was stunned by Peck's honesty. The stories of how he and his patients struggle with the problems and obstacles that confront them are amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary and sad
I bought this book because I do not want to hate Bush. As a recovering member of AA, I wanted to know more about him, because I doubt he has ever set foot into an AA meeting. If he had done so and truly grasped the concepts, he would not be doing the things he does.
1-0 out of 5 stars Justin Frank on the Couch
Well, first off, I have to admit to not having read the book, but I heard this nitwit on The Randi Rhodes Show this afternoon, and within about a minute I nearly lost control of the car I was laughing so hard.Something about the young G.W. Bush getting off torturing small animals and shoving hot pieces of steel up their rectums. But he's a famous doctor - who am I to question his diagnoses?
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Work
This is not just your usual Bush bash - it is a serious work by a well respected professional. If you find The Toxic Texan's thoughts and actions inexplicable and want to make some sense of it all, read this book. This is probably the best book I have read on why/how this man operates. It explains why Bush cannot speak when talking about subjects requiring understanding or compassion - but he never gets it wrong when he's talkin' tough.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Works!
This book should be read by everyone on the planet - it is the tool to assist in bringing about the "mind-shift" for our next leap in evolution.
3-0 out of 5 stars Routine
This book really doesn't add a lot to the literature available regarding success and creative thought, etc. It's not a bad read, just nothing really new.The author seems to be a good guy though, and is enthusiastic about his subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
Joe got it across to me in one sentence: "I believe our planet is what was described in an original Star Trek episode called "Shore Leave."..."they [Kirk, Spock et al] are on a planet that reads their thoughts and creates what they think about." Now, if you're not familiar with the concept that your internal world creates your external world, that's an 'out there' idea... Yes, parts of the book are redundant... and I'm not into all the spiritual stuff... but that's okay, because the concepts are simple and simply explained. Not to mention uplifting and inspiring. I love it. I've read it twice in a year now, and enjoyed it both times. Thanks Joe! ... Read more

A great little book, small enough to keep on your desktop at work, so you can read snippits frequently and stay in-balance.Looks at life from a "road less traveled" perspective, more of a bigger-picture/real meaning-of-life perspective, such as how to really align your thinking with what you want, so that you can actually achieve what you want--getting rid of negativity and the "I can't" mentality, and related subject matter. Dr. Dyer has a great deal of wisdom, which he shares in all his writings, CDs, and DVDs.I highly recommend this and any of his material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am not educated in psychology, but I found this professional-level book easy to read and very informative.McWilliams looks at various personalities like the sociopathic, paranoid, hysterical, etc.She explains the defense mechanisms that lead to the various personality types.Although this book is written from the standpoint of pathological personality types and is intended for use by professionals and psych students, after reading this book you will have a greater understanding of personality quirks of family, friends, and co-workers.Well-written and very informative, even for the "armchair" psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read for beginning & experienced mental health clinicians
McWilliams clearly has a degree of mastery on the subject. It is quite easy to write about this topic in manner that overcomplicates the subject (as many do), but rarely do I encounter an author who is able to present the information in a highly readable, accessible & integral manner. It is appropriate for experienced and beginning therapists alike. This is a book that any clinician ought to have in their library and you will find yourself referring back to it over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars not only for students
As an engineer who just wanted to get some insights in the field of psychoanalysis this book is doing a great job. It is easy to understand also for people who did not enjoy any psychological education before. It might just be the best way to get a good first overview of modern psychoanalytical models. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars cells over systems
I'm a biopsychologist.Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting.I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed.Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date.It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively).Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis.

4-0 out of 5 stars as for textbooks.....
as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus.this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap.the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Informative
The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn.Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information. It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Educator-friendly
This book is an excellent resource for educators. It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught.Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies.Even the biology and physiology is palatable. This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities.I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful.Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use.Highly recommended.

We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you wouldrather not be." But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will stillcast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seeminglyundesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront ourshadows. Only by owning every aspect of yourself can you achieve harmony and"let your own light shine," she explains. "The purpose of doing shadow work, isto become whole. To end our suffering. To stop hiding ourselves from ourselves.Once we do this we can stop hiding ourselves from the rest of the world."Read more

Editorial Review

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nuclear Weapon for the Modern Warrior
This book is LOADED with wisdom. The lessons you will learn here can help you to take your life to the next level and then the level beyond that one.Study this book and its Laws, and do not be afraid or too timid to adopt their teachings into your everyday experiences -- they will help you to get ahead, to get what you want, and to reach your goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific synopsis of the classic historical writings on power.
This book is a no holds barred open discussion of raw power, entertainingly presented. It took me a little while to get over the almost completely amoral tone of the book, but I eventually got the sense that the amoral tone is there for a purpose: to clue you in to the fact that people who practice power at this level can often be completely amoral themselves. In that sense, the book truly gives the reader a sense of the mindset of those who will do anything to stay in power. There is a sense as one reviewer pointed out, that the book could have been written without this amoral tone, but then one would miss out on the opportunity of being immersed in its sense of amorality, which is an education in itself.Experiencing the amorality is a wakeup call that offers insight into how some of the world's ills have come to pass, though you may find yourself wanting to shower afterward. After reading it, you will definitely be more aware of the laws being played out on the world stage, and you will begin to recognize people in government who seem to be using it as a playbook. Some laws are even applicable in personal relationships...a scary thought.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another product of the imagination
If you have wild dreams of pontifical success.Illusions of grandeur and great lusts for power, then this book may feed your ego.It may even make you feel real good about yourself.Knowing all these secrets of power. But alas, it is only a fantasy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one that changed my life
It's hard to maintain an appropriate scientific skepticism when you find a book that has no epidemiological basis but manages to answer all of your most vexing life questions. This is the book that just "clicked" with me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brings great peace of mind.
This book does more than any other book I have read to ensure peace of mind for those contemplating their own death or the death of a loved one. It gives detailed histories of soul progress from the time of death up to the choice of the next birth. The detail is convincing, and it fits with my extensive study of metaphysical literature on spiritual development and reincarnation. The stories carry more credibility because they come from a skeptical hypnotherapist who got into regression therapy to help people with behavior problems, and developed techniques for regressing the client to the cause of the problem. At first he was getting mainly childhood events, then he got a case involving a past life. In following his own curiosity, he learned to take clients through their death scene and into the various phases of life between lives. Thus far I have bought about 8 copies to share with friends, and have told many more about it. Don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible source of insight
I wish they would make another edition, even though its expensive, well worth its read. written well enough for both laymen and professional. It gets kind of technical at the end, but once you've read enough of the other books, you pretty much can get an idea of the clinical stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making a difficult study simply amazing!
Studying and treating Bipolar Disorder is a difficult trend. Since Kraepelin lessons became available in his book, perhaps "Manic Depressive Illness" is the first to try the almost impossible mission to launch new lights on the matter. And with an amazing approach full of eruditism as well as simplicity and warmth. Untill nowadays, extremely accurate, complete, precise and comprehensive. In little words: in all aspects, amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
Years ago when I was hospitalized for this illness, this HUGE reference and research book literally got me through. When doctors and my own family didn't know what was going on with me, I knew because the things written in this book were detailing (to a hugely accurate degree)my own experiences. Beyond this, it gives invaluable insight into lesser-known facets of this condition that it's apparent not even some physicians have researched, so in depth. The criticisms of some semi-outdated material are valid...certainly there have been advances in medicine, in particular, in the past 10-15 years. However, the bulk of the information is current in its validity and would not change, over time. This is some intense research. There is simply no other reference book out there that is so detailed and thorough. You must buy this book if you are the least bit interested in learning about this illness.Mental health experts should be required by law to own it.Surely, if you yourself have experienced the effects of bipolar disorder or you know someone in your family or life with it, you will literally not be able to put the book down--it's fascinating! Buy it, coupled with co-author Kay Redfield Jamison's other books (she's a psychiatrist AND a bipolar/manic depressive)--she is refreshingly unashamed and clear about her own life experiences in other works.Don't expect any personal examples in this book, as it's strictly research and data. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for novice therapist
I bought this book when I was fresh out of graduate school and starting my first job under supervision. This book has great ideas that are easy, very therapeutic for the children I work with, and also inspiring for coming up with my own creative techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, but Easy
The activities in this book are well organized and simple. Most do require some type of preparation and some materials. Some of the activities use games; others use art therapy, etc. This is an invaluable resource for me in therapy session with children and adolescents. The kids have always been interested in the interventions I have used from this book. This is therapy without the child KNOWING it's therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent
I am a social worker who often works with oppositional and resistant children. This book offers several fresh ideas on interacting and engaging children so that they will begin to talk about their feelings. I
