Worth a look
First I must say that I am not a fan of Dr. Phil so I know very little of this author's reputation. (I not an 'anti-fan' of Dr. Phil either, just not big on TV)
Not sure about this one
I think that this book is a good teaching tool for all these parents who want to prepare their children to score high in the IQ test. But when you think of that carefully, doesn't this defeat the idea of your intelligence being measurable by IQ tests? If you can improve the score by preparing yourself to the test that means that the test does not really measure your intelligence, but only your ability to score high on the test. ... Read more

A Textbook on Human Communication
I am a huge fan of Daniel Goleman.He's the bestselling author who coined the term "Emotional Intelligence" with his 1995 book of the same name.Now he's got a new book, "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships."Social intelligence is the ability to read other people's cues and then act on them.Life is all about relationships, and there is a science to how we relate to each other.It's fascinating to see how Goleman breaks down each aspect of communication.We can learn how to more effectively express ourselves so that we feel understood.And we can learn how to better "read" other people so that we can better understand.This helps to improve our interactions and ultimately strengthen our relationships.He talks about "synchrony" or interacting smoothly at the nonverbal level, which is an important, yet often overlooked, part of relating.Goleman also scientifically explains "the capacity for joy" and how that affects our social intelligence.He shows how our resilience plays an important role in our happiness, which comes into play as we express ourselves to others.

Life is to live...
I think deep thinking people tend to be unhappy because they're not living life.They're idealizing and rationalizing life.Some of the concepts here may be good, but reading this book will leave you feeling empty, even if you agree.It's better to spend the time living your life than reading these kinds of deep books.

The more you read this book and go deeper into the principles of Covey the more you discover yourself and others. For many people reading Covey's book or listening to him speak literally changes their lives. This is a powerful and effective recipe for success indeed and highly recommended for people in training.

This book is an exceptionally well thought, intellectual work. I admire Mr. Covey for his in-depth analysis of human relationships and the new concepts he introduced like emotional bank account, paradigm shift, and writing a family mission statement. Outstanding!
Dale Carnegie is one of the authors I have admired for so long. There are numerous reasons why this book is a classic one. He deeply believes that in every person there is good and you can approach it. Of course, there are many negative people who don't like this book because they see everything in black and white. Carnegie on the other side advocates a really delicate, positive and humane approach to everyone around you. It comes very close to "treat the others as you want them to treat you". I am sure that if everyone read and apply the principles in this wonderful book, the world will be a better place. I am sure that you will be pleased as well with his talent to really understand what drives people. Some of the key and basic motivators he discussed are sex and being important. His viewpoint is very close to the one of the bestselling author of scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex. After all genius things are usually simple. Carnegie explores the human nature and common hot buttons together with the reader and gives you tools to manage and push them at your will with the help of numerous examples. I liked that the book is practical, easy and fun to read, and most of all that it delivers great value. I can not say the same for many other books. Definitely get a copy especially if you are a "good" person and prefer to treat people with respect and dignity.

great reference of psychiatric illnesses
I think this book will be a pretty good resource for anyone searching for information regarding sleep disorders and mood swings. It will also teach anyone new to psychiatrics valuable information on dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc. as well as diagnoses associated with the illnesses.

The closest thing to Diagnostic Guidelines in Psychiatry
This is the full manual that you need to at least be in the ballpark on a diagnosis to help treat your patients with reasonable certainty.With Diagnosis, there is prognosis...and with this book, you can give a patient some relatively confident answers about what they are experiencing.One disadvantage to this full text is that it is large, and there is a lot of verbage. The scaled down desk version or the pocket guide to the DSM IV that you may want to have on rounds.
Still "The" Text We All Know About
DSM will remain as the bible of psychiatry. Despite its shortcomings, DSM has made it possible for clinicians to talk more objectively about psychiatric illnesses. Now more than ever, people around the globe can actually understand what 'schizophrenia' or 'bipolar disorder' really is. Another Wanna Be?
"What The Bleep..." captured my curiosity, but this book almost makes me angry.There is so much more to our being than the "mind-body" connection, and the author tries to understand the spirit, but misses the mark.Making the mind the most powerful connector is not in line with mind/body/spirit reality and that makes this book disappointing. The journal format makes it very readable, but why use this format unless the ego, which is the nemesis of the mind, is what is truly in control? Go with "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," before reading this, then add a little Chopra.

This book addresses the age-old desire of people to move towards pleasure and away from pain.
Wow
I couldn't put this book down and it's been a while since that happened. This book has a lot of great content to it (I was nervous by the simple sounding title that it woud be another fluffy feel good book where they tell you if you smile you'll feel good and you leave with no real new information). But Candace Pert doesn't play that fruit-tart game. A true scientist, she gives gives accurate and researched answers to many of the questions she's been asked over the many years from aspartame to releasing trauma through bodywork to peptide T for HIV. The book isn't a compilation of lists but weaves the information through in a narrative style so it's very enjoyable reading (as I said - it's the first book I really didn't want stop reading in a while). I first head about Candace through a friend who had her meditation/relaxation/feel good CD "Psychosomatic Wellness" so I bought it from her website too because my friend was so amazd by it -- and it is great! I was SO EXCITED when I read the part of the book that explained the science behind the CD!! I'm rambling now...but I just think this book is great! I highly recommend her CD too -- it's so effective (I don't know why Candace Pert doesn't have "Psychsomatic Wellness" on Amazon - but everyone should buy it because it's priceless and goes great with the book). I am a Sniper in a special STRIKE team in the British Army on my second tour of Iraq. This book is one of the best books I have had the privilege to read. It gave me the tools I needed to go from shooting at great distances under pressure and then picking up my hart-rate to go into a hostile house to arrest the target. It has done more than just that, it has helped me understand who I am and why I am.

On Combat
I have read two books written by this author. Both are excelent and tells it like it is. Very clear to understand, explains in detail some of the emotions I experienced. Wish I would have known about this before.

Grossman Hits Another Home Run
Anyone who has read "On Killing" knows that Col. Grossman knows his stuff on this topic."On Combat" is a new look at this topic with many updates and some new ideas, including more original research into the mental processes that take place in the mind of a warrior during combat situations.The authors also look at the mental processes of 'recovery', why recovery sometimes goes wrong, and compare the homecoming of the veterans of the various 20th century wars to look at the results of Vietnam vs the other conflicts.

Managing Conflict using Getting to Yes, what a book!

The content of this book is sound; however
First, a testimonial.When I was three-quarters of the way through, I had a whammy of a week.On Monday I negotiated in a job interview, Tuesday I negotiated with my landlady, and Wednesday I negotiated with my manager over new job routines (the cause of my activities on Monday). I found the methods, strategies, approaches and techniques in the book IMMEDIATELY helpful in these situations.

busy, wordy and uninspiring
I got this book for my foster teens but tossed it in the recycling bin instead. The book is full of chatter; the authors never get to the point.Plus all the illustrations, boxes and fonts, which I guess are supposed to be hip, give you a headache. I did plog through this quagmire long enough to confirm the authors weren't saying anything that would inspire a kid, so it's just as well they slathered it with window dressing. The book dies have a catchy cover, which I assume is designed to attract parents, not kids.Heck, I bought it.

bit much for my 12 year old
My 12 year old got bored with it, she's probably too young for this book.I am hoping she will pick it up in a year or so. I thought it was interesting and usefull.

Her best book and one with some great advise
Having read Ms Huffingtons earlier books, most of which were written when she was in the Republican camp, I was curious as to what the new book would be like and admit I was even hesitant, thinking she may have gone the extreme opposite. But I am so dang impressed and cannot recommend the book highly enough.
Because Women Need The Message
I rated this book with 4 stars because so many women are going to recognize themselves in this book; however, I didn't give it five stars because Huffington didn't go far enough into the female or human dilemma.We are riddled with fear because of history, the church, the state, but to make a statement "become fearless" and not back it up with the way to do it, leaves us empty.In Gangi's book, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," she also talks about fear, but fear as one of only two emotions, love being the other.To become fearless we have to embrace ourselves with unconditional love, not become warriors in the pack.Huffington's name will sell the book, but readers need to know there are stronger messages written with more heart. ... Excellent book that describes how to create a trend
I was fascinated by the original perspective in this thought provoking book about the evolution of an idea into a trend.Using easy to understand examples, Malcolm Gladwell explains the mechanics of the process, and enlightens us about the the various people involved.I strongly recommend this book.I also recommend Robert Cialdini's book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.These books complement each other and should be read together.

The Tipping Point
Staff writer for The New York Post, Malcolm Gladwell, explains what causes a concept, idea or item to become an epidemic in The Tipping Point.Using case studies the reader will relate to (Sesame Street, Blues Clues, Crime in New York City in the 90's, Hush Puppies, Paul Revere's famous ride North), Gladwell discusses how and why people react the way they do in certain situations and to certain ideas/items.You'll look at your friends, co-workers and family in a different way as you consider who is a Connector, Maven or salesperson, you'll consider the context in which something happens as opposed to just the action, you'll think about everyday happenings in a different way after you read this book.

I was looking for an original and valuable present for my boyfriend. I am very pleased with my decision to buy this book. It draws from several areas of knowledge and Malcolm Gladwell is a very skillful writer. He knows how to engage you from the first page till the last one and keeps you wondering what more you will learn from this incredible book. My boyfriend said that the tipping point and scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex are the best, most valuable and eye-opening books he has ever received as a present. Well, I don't hear such compliment every day. It was such a small thing for me to give him a present and yet it turned so important for him. What better proof for Gladwell's thesis. I also agree that we all should start paying more attention to the small, small things and details from our daily lives and the result may astound us. The Power Of Nice:How To Conquer The Business World With Kindness
This is a wise and meaningful book. It's full of examples where niceness makes an active difference in high pressure business envoronments. There's alot to be learned from it and, nicely, they've made it fun to read.

Great book , short and sweet
I received this book as part of a [...]. It took me about an hour and a half to read the whole book. It is a great book, very simply and succintly written. The ideas presented are some that we were always taught in school but probably failed to follow somewhere along the way. It teaches us to be good to others , even if they are our enemies, because what goes around , comes around. If you do good to others , it will come back to you. The nice cubes are especially helpful. I have noticed that I do make a conscious effort on my part every day to be good to others at work and at home even if I dont have to. It makes my day go better :)
Good book, Poor cover
Stuck in LA . Flight delayed,Desperate for a short but useful book. The last book I wouldnormally pick is one with a smiley face. Glad I did. The book's Big Idea: we are all connected and when we do one nice thing it spreads and rebounds---in often very unexpected ways---to our benefit. Useful examples on howhelping supposed enemies is often good business; insightful ideas on treating today's adversaries like tomorrow's allies; unconvential tactics on moving your frames from "no" to "yes".By the time the flight was ready to board, the book read through---a lot wiser. Engaging and Beautifully Written
This book is beautifully written making it an enjoyable read.David Myers does a superlative job of expressing Psychology in a way that's not only intriguing, but also equally detailed and engaging.I read every page of this book for my introduction to Psychology class, and it was immensely helpful not only for psychology but also a myriad of other subjects.

Find out what type of person you are when confronted with change.
This book can identify to all categories of people and how they react to change.I think at some point I have played all roles when someone has moved my cheese.I think I should read this book on an annual basis to remind myself of which mouse I would like to be.

Confrontational, enlightening but too simple
This book uses two mice and two little people who look like mice to make a serious point.How do you respond to change?In Who Moved My Cheese?, we see those who immediately seek a new viable option, those who move forward only when a situation is life threatening, and those who refuse to budge.Isn't this what we see in everyday life?My biggest concern about this book is that the question provided to deal with the fear that stops us from moving forward is "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" This is an example of repressive coping, and does not deal with the reason for the fear, and does not resolve the fear.To learn how to best deal with troublesome feelings that stop us from making the most of our lives,I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self.I recommend each of these books.

Interesting read
I found the book interesting from the standpoint of the infinite emotional fluxuation women seem to deal with explained scientifically.As a man I have always wanted a woman, devoid of feminism and emotion to try to explain why women act the way they do.That is not to say that I feel superior, I have always just been facinated by the "differences" in how men and women think and how women approach issues, problems, and joys differently than men.I have been married to the same woman for over 35 years, and have had a constant, close companion as a study.
Not a Scientist
I am not a scientist, researcher , or doctor and therefore can't comment on the extensive reviews done by those in the clinical fields; however, I can comment on the use of "cutesy" language and the "dumbing" down approach to the female brain.How much research is being done on the ethereal energy that separates male and female? Maybe I'm too "new age" or alternative-minded, but I've learned alot more about gender differences, male and female energy, female brains and reactions from Deepak Chopra, Rayna Gangi and Andrew Weil than I did from this fairly bad attempt.

The Price is psychologically devastatingly high.Read the book to protect your family from psychological dysfunction
This is an excellent book about how the affluent have adopted undermining values (perfectionism, materialism) and how it negatively affects parenting style and causes psychological neurosis among teens.I am the parent of a teenage daughter who goes to a public high school in Marin County.Thus, we live in the social milieu described by Dr. Levine.The book content was both shocking and revealing to me.When I shared some of Dr. Levine's findings that I could not believe I would ask my daughter about them.Invariably, she confirmed that Dr. Levine was correct.That's how I found out that one of my daughter's acquaintances did cut herself frequently.That's also when I knew that Dr. Levine was onto something and not just sensationalizing another marketable myth about Marin County.Also, this book really is not about Marin County as it depicts a nationwide prevalent phenomenon of teenage psychological dysfunction among the affluent.
