Editorial Review

When you look at the popularity of mind-body medicine today, it's hard to understand what a groundbreaking book this was when it was first published in 1975. Based on studies at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson showed that relaxation techniques such as meditation have immense physical benefits, from lowered blood pressure to a reduction in heart disease. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good...but try to find an older edition.
I originally read The Relaxation Response when I was serving in Somalia in 1993. There was a table of free books donated from the states and the title peaked my interest....given the environment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Relief and Indigo Dreams
This is an excellent book for anyone that wants to understand how stress works and how it hurts the body. Based on fact and research it is presented in an easy to read format. You can turn to any page and get something out of it that will make sense to you. I particularly liked the way Dr. Benson takes the mysticism out of meditation and shows scientifically how breathing, visualizing, muscular relaxation and positive statements will help your nervous system, circulatory system, respiratory system and immune system. This book has been around for 30 years and it's information is still powerful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for laypersons and practitioners alike
Whether you are a mental or physical health practitioner or simply a person looking to explore relaxation techniques, this is an excellent book. Background information is provided, as well as an in depth look at how this works, why it works, and what effect it has on the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and highly usable
Terrific 2 CD set - enjoyable to listen to, highly informative, short and sweet. You are on your way to using the techniques immediately.Nice addition to my "arsenal" of self-healing techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
I am just a beginner at Meditation, and I am trying to learn this for my health.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to meditation
This is a solid introduction to the practice of meditation. The first disc features Weil and Kabat-Zinn giving background information about meditation. The second disc features guided meditations. Like any spiritual practice, the more information an individual gets, the better he or she becomes at that practice. This set of discs is a good starting point that will get a person going into meditation immediately, which might lead the listener to pursue additional materials about spirituality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The deeper side of cooking
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking.I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom
This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990.Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Easy to Follow
This is a great book for the Feng Shui beginner! It is clear and very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Room by Room (Feng Shui)
This book contains the nuts and bolts of Feng Shui and how it is applied in the everyday world. It is a very down to earth and a practical guide for making changes in your home environment.Pictures help to really make the reader understand what the author is talking about.

4-0 out of 5 stars feng shui-ing my life
Overall very good book I find it very helpful. But reading additional books, It seems you can't just start dressing up your home just by the overall summary of this book. There seems to be a whole lot of detail that needs to be addressed so you don't do something that would bring the opposite of what your doing. For example, If your Love and Marriage happens to land in a bathroom it's not recommneded to dress it up with romantic notions for it would flush things down the toilet. I would recommend reading additional books to cover more detail. and If you happen to be a rat pack like I am/was and clutter up just because... well might I recommned a book called 'clear your clutter with feng shui' by karen kingston. She bases a lot on her examples but overall motivates you to de-clutter your life and think about why you did in the first place. Than move on to creating scared spaces with either her or Denise Linn but might i warn you denise is a heavy writter.... I find a little hard to follow every detail of fleunt description. But another good book from her years of expericences. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Brainy and well worth it
This is a scholarly collection of essays from leading theorists in the field of attachment and neurobiology. It provides an exciting, in-depth overview from various perspectives from the inner workings of the brain, to the development of the social mind, to what it all mean for clinicians. There is both theory and practical advice. The last several chapters are particularly relevant to psychotherapists in the field working with individuals with trauma. The down side of the book is that some of the early chapters are somewhat rhedundant and heady, necessarily so in the science presented, but definately overlapping. However, I'd strongly recommend it for all clinicians wanting to stay abreast of the exciting developments in this area. I use it in supervision groups I lead for therapists, for example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Traumas as Social Interactions
We react to serious mishaps, life altering setbacks, disasters, abuse, and death by going through the phases of grieving. Traumas are the complex outcomes of psychodynamic and biochemical processes. But the particulars of traumas depend heavily on the interaction between the victim and his social milieu.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bridge to recovery
I've danced around with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks off and on for several years. So, I've read many, many books. After my symptoms restarted recently, I found this book. This is a great book to read after you understand the various mental and physical sources and symptoms of anxiety disorders.5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, concise, very readable
This book offers a concise, easy-to-read version of Dr. Bourne's previous work.It presents a wealth of useful information on how to handle anxiety in just 150 pages.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving on, not the TV show, the book
Absolutely one of the best books I've read in the last 10 years. As a grief counselor, I am painfully aware of how people get "stuck in a rut" and go back to old familiar behaviour. The only difference between a rut and a grave is it's size and the amount of time one spends in it.She has once again given us all something to think about as well as a plan of action that so many people don't really seem to have.As well as change lives, this book will, in this man's humble opinion, undoubtedly save some as well.A must read for grievors, those who have gone through seperation or divorce, and for the rest of us that haven't.... yet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Moving on
The author has never written a book I didnt enjoy. I have seen criticism of this book for repeating content of her previous book(s). I don't know about those critics - but I needed a new updated version' and I got it in this book. Of course, I love all of Sarah's books!

2-0 out of 5 stars Author's credibility in question
This book was really a disappointment. Some passages were lifted verbatim from her other books--which made me feel ripped off. In "Moving On," she describes how the clutter in her house got out of control to the point where she had a psychic specialist come in. The psychic said the house was "weeping." Sarah then found out soon after that her husband was having an affair and the house was "protecting" her with its clutter. That's an interesting enough story--EXCEPT that she told the exact same story in "Simple Abundance," only the person having the cluttered house problem was her friend--not Sarah. So, which story are we supposed to believe?

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Love This Book!!
Don't let the size fool you.If you have been diagnosed with DID, then this little book of 109 pages is what you need.It doesn't go into the hows and whys of DID, the DID Source Book is great for that. What "Got Parts?" gives you is a day to day manual for getting through life with DID.I carry it in my backpack where ever I go. There are times that DID just gets me down, so I pick up the book, thumb easily to the section I want, take a minute to read about what I need to do, then I remember and do it.Another great thing about this book is that it is written by someone who has DID, who lives and fights in the trenches of DID.This brings authenticity to the book.It also has an index and is easy to locate the subject you are looking for. The writing style of the author is very easy going and she doesn't ever break into stories of her past. There is a page, however in the very back entitled, "About the Author" who remains unidentified.Even then she never talks about the details of her abuse. It's just plain good advice from someone who knows.I have several DID books, but this one is my favorite when I just need to get through the day. When I have moments of feeling crazy, I open the book. When I feel overwhelmed with emotion, I open this book.It helps me to clear my thinking and gives me immediate direction. In short, I really love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for sufferers of DID
Excellent information, step by step excersises, easy to read, non complex book. Must read for all patients and mental health providers of DID!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
When I first got this book, I was a bit ticked that I paid thirteen dollars for a book that was only around a hundred pages. But once I read it, I knew it was well worth the money. Every sentance is informative. It confronts many daily aspects of life that are affected when one has DID and how to overcome that. Its not full of psycho-mumbo-jumbo but how to handle everyday thigns like taking medicine, raising the kids, sexual activity, work, and respect among the alters. It is truly an owners manual for those with DID. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have used it for years
I've used this personally for years, through my husband's illness from dementia and subsequent death. As a retired social worker, I've given a number of copies to friends for use in their bereavement. It's so applicable, small and easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It Grew on Me"
I purchased this book for my dad and myself after my mother's recent death. At first I thought it was going to be a bit too simplistic in it's daily readings, but soon found out that when experiencing grief, simplicity can be comforting. Her writing is clear and concise.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly filler.
Based on reviews, I was so certain I would like this book, I ordered 2--one for a gift. I was hugely disappointed. The information would have fit in a pamphlet instead of spread out in an oversized book with big margins. I don't like being repeatedly told what I am about to read and then re-reading it at least two more times, sometimes on the same page, and it is riddled with unnecessary cutesy drawings. I have found very similar information free on the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the book I have been looking for for a long time. We had private BrainGym classes with a BrainGym instructor to help my son's social skills and attention. It worked fine. But it is just too expensive($85/hour). What she did to my son is just what the book describes about ten step change process. In brainGym it is called repatterning/balance. It is very powerful. I would like to learn. So I can do it for my son. But none of BrainGym books give you complete description/steps to do it. Instead they recommend you to take their classes/workshop for several hundred dollars to learn it. It is like a secret. And you need to pay several hundred dollars in order to get the secret. This book is so good and it gives comprehensive instructions. And it tells the secret. And it is easy to follow and implement. I recommend everybody get it and try it. It will work on many areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Learning Brain
An interesting book, containg a lot of ideas for exercises to helpthe brain make those vital connections that occassionally get missed out in early childhood. If your not into exercises, then just reading the book is also interesting, and has helped us to understand how the brain develops in those important early years. It gives added motivation for ensuring your children are physically active and learn to use their hands and feet to improve co-ordination so important for later years. Editorial Review

To reap the holistic benefits of any mind-body exercise, students must relax and stay focused throughout their class. That's tough to do when the instructor seems to be--or actually is--speaking a foreign language, or when the physical movements seem equally foreign to the body. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MindBody Fitness for Dummies
This book wins the"fitness relevance" award for being virtually the first to apolitically and respectfully describe the major mindful exercise modalities that exist in the West today - in one concise volume. There are hundreds of yoga, tai chi, Pilates, martial arts and derivative publications today each extolling the papal and fitness-related virtues of their own species of mind-body exercise. Therese has put together a utilitarian compendium of the classical and contemporary forms, yes in somewhat abstract form, but always with skillful instruction and quite meaningful resources. This is a wonderfully organized reference for those desiring a wide-angle and descriptive view of the major players in mind-body exercise modalities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner
I am a novice to mediation, and was looking for mediation/visualization resources to help me stay calm and centered during a very stressful and negative time in my life.I never found her voice irritating as others have-- on the contrary I find it soothing and easy to listen to.It was very effective in helping me stay positive during challenging times (and I believe the positive imagery helped turnaround a negative situation)

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Visualization Meditations

Oh my, what a voice, she really gets on one's nerves. In waytoo much a hurry with all that she is "trying" to achieve.

1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

4-0 out of 5 stars For beginners
This basic manual for Pilates is especially helpful because of the cautions about avoiding poor form while you're doing the exercises. The limitations of any book attempting to teach you how to do physical movements is offset by the authors' knowledge of what mistakes typical beginners make.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good for a complete novice.
I'm training for a certain activity and was told that Pilates would be great to do because many people in the sport do it.I knew _absolutely nothing_ about Pilates.I asked around at local fitness clubs but couldn't find any instructors.Lacking local instruction, I bought this book based on the recommendations here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of Pilates exercises for a hard body
Joseph H. Pilates, the German inventor of the Pilates exercise method must be smiling in the heavens. The lifelong pacifist who was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880... devoted his life to the study of physical education. He moved to the United States in 1926 and afterwards became active with the New York City Ballet."Pilates; body in motion," by Alycea Ungaro of Tribeca Bodyworks is a treasure chest of Pilate exercises for a hard body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes.A perfect complement to the 100 hour course.I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set. ...
