4-0 out of 5 stars A useful text for western students
Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "Complete Guide"
I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now. This book has everything.I MUST have.It is very thorough and extremely interesting. Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere. If you only have one book - get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Ayurvedic student!
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it! ... Read more

GREAT BOOK! Oh my gosh! I have been tearing apart closets and rooms. It inspired me to get rid of so much stuff that we never use. We are turning my old studio/ office/ junk room/ closet into a den. We took an entire Volvo full to Goodwill. Even if you are Nancy Neat, I would recommend this book! It is positively fabulous and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to mindfulness meditation
I'm sad to see a reviewer be so judgmental about this audio - especially one who claims to respect the teachings of the Buddha. These guided meditations are accessible for anyone, without the baggage of what some might call a religion - Buddhism. (For me, it's a philosophy more than a religion, and I have learned more about Buddha and his teachings because of these audios.)As cassette tapes, these audios were my introduction to the practice, and they resonated for me then, and still do after 13 years.
1-0 out of 5 stars a dumbed-down version of old Buddhist texts - ex. Satipatthana Sutta
It's very disappointing to read/listen to individuals who take old buddhists texts and re-interpret the texts as their own.Kabat-Zinn borrows so much and rarely mentions Buddhism.Pitiful.For those critically evaluating the book/audio, it's useful to note that many of these new ideas are actually old ones; simply because no one has a copyright on old buddhist texts doesn't imply that we can without impunity stealthily borrow their ideas without citation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed by the lack of creativity brought to this expensive set of cd's.I'm sorry to say, "Guided Mindfulness Meditation" was silent, and slow going.Metaphors, stories, nuggets, and music were missing. My first purchase of Dr. Kabat-Zinn's work was the audiotape, "Wherever You Go There You Are".Dr. Kabat-Zinn did a great job here through his use of voice, music, and text.He was able to transport me to a peaceful state, his soothing voice lyrically illustrating relaxation metaphors.Soothing music was the backdrop for his interesting approach mixing together fact and story.I was hoping "Guided Mindfullness Meditation" would be just as inviting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very easy way to be introducted to this concept
This is a book that is very easy to read and introduces a western person to concepts of Budism without the religious part.It is a great way to learn concepts that are helpful in daily life.It can help a person to be more focused and effective in life by being mindful. This is a must read.He also has CDs or Tapes for meditation which are very easy to learn to meditate from.It is not religious either. It is just focusing on your breath. This is budism that can be incorporated into the life of anyone of any faith because it is just the concepts and not the religious aspects, but after learning these things one might want to explore more into a faith that creates such wonderful things.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not his best work
I love Dyer's voice and thought this would be quite incredible so my expectations were high ~ my mistake. All is well until it comes to the sounds he is instructing the listener to chant and then his voice becomes the most annoying drone that distracts the meditation and thus defeats the purpose.Later he adds some affirmations that seem out of place and throws your focus off even further. It may have been helpful if he had included some music in the background to make the recording more relaxing and give the listener something else to hear besides Dyer breathing between chants.Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of his work and always will be.However, I'm a little surprised that this recording remains on the market rather than being re-recorded to bring the quality to a higher standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Cruisin' Meditation
I love this CD.I have always felt silling trying to meditate at home, but have been using this in the car during my commute to and from home. No, I am not zoning-out while driving!I just chant along with Wayne & find myself calmer and more centered when I arrive at my destination. It's a great way to "shed the workday" before you get home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and inspiring resource
This book, intended for therapists, is a comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible guide to what Najavits establishes is the first crucial step for someone struggling with PTSD and substance abuse: learning to feel safe. It is also an excellent resource for patients who want to help themselves. What I like best is that the book is filled with checklists, stories, exercises, and quotations such that I can open to nearly any page and find ideas that are both practical and inspirational. In short, this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Powerful Book
Thank you for writing such a great book.I have suffered from addictions for years, tried many books and many methods.Working with a group or individual is one thing, but for me, nothing helps more than a book. It's on call twenty four hours a day and I can easily reference it.As far as books go...this one is by far the best. The most comprehensive and in-depth book I've read so far.It provided tremendous support and guidance on issues that often result in isolation. Most of all, it didn't talk down to me as a reader. That's something I don't need!Thank you for making this book available and writing it in such a helpful way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful volume for professionals
I can see why this book got such rave reviews and is such a best-seller.It's a superb book, offering both real insight into trauma and addiction, as well as hands-on clinical tools. As someone in the field, I have found both the philosophical and practical aspects of Najavits' work incomparable. On top of the impeccable professionalism, is her impressive writing. This is a must buy for anyone interested in this area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!!
First, to diffuse some of the objections to this book you might come across:
5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Vampires Strike 24/7
If you are tired of being used, abused and emotionally and physically drained by certain people at work, at home, at the malls and many other places and even by those who appear nice, this book is a must read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Protection from Vampires--not therapy
Emotional Vampires teaches you how to protect yourself from people who emotionally and materially drain you for their own gain and at your expense. These "vampires" prey on colleagues, friends, and family. They are especially dangerous because their self-absorption prevents them from seeing that they are harming others, and even makes them think they are helping others. "Vampires" are especially gifted at finding the most vulnerable victims. With Dr. Bernstein's help, these vampires will see you as no easy prey and move on to others. You recognize Emotional Vampires by the emotional aftermath: they "take a lot out of you," they leave you feeling "drained," they "pushed your buttons," they are "high maintenance," etc. Dr. Bernstein is right on the money with "vampire bite" as a metaphorical diagnosis for the real harm these types cause, but beware: the fangs seldom show, and emotional vampires can seem as harmless and ineffectual as Aunt Bea, or as affable as Will Rogers. Each chapter is a recognizance of different "vampire" personality types. I realized I was particularly vulnerable to the "histrionics" who thrive on drama for its own sake. I used Bernstein's techniques on a certain "histrionic" vampire in my life, and now I'm thankfully out of her perpetual soap opera. I urge everybody to buy this book. It's a funny and easy read, but the subject is serious and the insights ring deeply true. Once you have read it you will have the power to protect yourself from a lot of hard times and wasted hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but only for professionals
This beautiful book from the world teacher Iyengar was difficult to read, and I am teaching yoga already for 25 years. So, for me it was marvellous, but not recommended for beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars The theory behind the practice
There was yoga before the time of Patanjali but it was not written down, or at least no text survives. We find elements of the practice in the Upanishads and of course in the Bhagavad Gita. But before Patanjali's codification there was no systematic text to guide the aspirant.Since then Patanjali's sutras have been translated into many languages along with commentary to elucidate the concise text, with Vyasa's commentary from the ninth century--upon which Iyengar makes some reliance--being the most important. 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Stunning!
Jayme Barrett has written a book on feng shui that is highly informative, readable, easy to use, and beautiful to look at. This book absolutely helped me to change tracks. Just beginning to implement the suggestions in this book has resulted in increasing my energy and motivation as well as improving my overall mood. The book is filled with gorgeous photographs by Jonn Coolidge that beautifully illustrate the ideas presented by Jayme. It is a joy to read as well as to browse through the pictures. I've read the book several times now and have begun to suspect that I will have to buy a backup copy since I will probably wear this one out!

Editorial Review

Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initial hyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deep breath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presented in this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise for presenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, and the multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organized chapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and body awareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques to try and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stress management, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focus on daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifying key elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differently to these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For this edition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser Permanente Online), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-Ashbury Psychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worry control, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and a more reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typos and graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Absolutely the best first book to get on the subject of essential oils.I have purchased a few others, and this is by far, the best in the lot.I take it everywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
There are other reviews that go into great detail about what is in this book. I will only add this and say it has been a useful book in many ways. It has paid for itself in stress relief recipes alone. It is interesting and helpful and has cured what ails my family many times over.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for essential oil blends
I love using this book to compare and contrast with Roberta Wilson's "Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty."The two books are similar in many ways, though I do consider Roberta Wilson's book to be somewhat better.Nevertheless, I'd still recommend having both on hand, as you can learn a lot from both. There are many blends to choose from in Worwood's book, and lots of ways to get ideas to formulate your own blends.I also enjoy the fact that the book is grouped by condition, which makes it very easy to find information regarding specific issues. There's also a lot of background information on both essential oils and the various states of being they address.I do have one gripe, though, and strangely enough, it's not even about her coverage of essential oils.In one of the chapters, she refers to Bloody Mary as Queen of Scots, which just blows me away, as these are two totally different people.I really would have expected a better knowledge of Northern European history coming from a native of that very region.Other than that and Worwood's questionable knowledge of felines where EOs are concerned, I would still recommend this book as a good addition to your essential oil library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth. However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations. While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

Editorial Review

Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli?Affected by other people's moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you?HSP, shorthand for "highly sensitive person," describes 15 to 20 percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait--nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that, because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors, concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to understand themselves and their sensitive trait and its impact on personal history, career, relationships, and inner life. The book offers advice for typical problems. For example, you learn strategies for coping with overarousal, overcoming social discomfort, being in love relationships, managing job challenges, and much more. The author covers a lot of material clearly, in an approachable style, using case studies, self-tests, and exercises to bring the information home. The book is essential for you if you are an HSP--you'll learn a lot about yourself. It's also useful for people in a relationship with an HSP. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!
If you consider yourself a sensitive person, you MUST read this book!It is also very useful for those who encounter sensitives(i.e.: teachers, doctors, employers, etc)Finally! A book that helps me understand why I am the way I am(sensitive)helps me to use this to my best ability instead of being afraid. And also to educate those close to me on my sensitivity.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too Psychologically Deep
This book is very hard to understand. It seems as though one has to have a little bit of a background in psychology (or at least an understanding of it) to undertand the nomenclature of the book and to understand what is being comunicated. For the previously mentioned reasons I did not like the book.I expected it to be reader friendly and very practical(to suggest tips in one's life he/she could actually practice- put to use).It is not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Artist point of view...
I only read half of the book. I couldn't take it anymore and had to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear path to personal accountability-- no question about it
If you like your self-help advice in a quick-to-read, easy-to-digest format, you'll enjoy this sequel to the book, QBQ! The Question Behind the Question. In his first book, author John G. Miller explained that instead of whining, "Why does everything bad happen to me?" you should take responsibility and ask yourself, "What can I do to improve my situation?" That's the QBQ, and asking it stops you from blaming and complaining, and empowers you to find your own solutions. In this book, Miller takes personal accountability up a notch, and teaches you how to improve your relationships at home and at work by adopting the five "Advantage Principles: learning, ownership, creativity, service and trust." At times, the book can get a bit preachy, but the examples are entertaining and the advice is simple, clear and solid. If you're looking for a fast shot of effective, feel-good self-help advice, we recommend Miller's accessible program. Or to pose the question his way: if your QBQ is, "What can I read to learn how to solve my own problems?" this book is your answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and Poorly Written
QBQ is common sense. For a top motivational speaker I would expect a little more depth than three paragraph chapters with little gems of wisdom culled from office banter or internet rumors.I'm sure there are other authors out there who write about personal responsibility and accountability and have more to offer....
5-0 out of 5 stars Just like QBQ! - simple, effective - and deep!
Each employee at our manufacturing consulting firm receives a copy of QBQ! to read.We have a short dialogue and its contents are referenced daily. Every time I listen to Miller's "book on tape" CD or re-read QBQ!, something new hits home.I have shared these books as gifts with employees and friends and with my family as well. From my wife to each of the four children ages 22 to 14. It makes a difference at all levels and now Flipping the Switch, Miller's new book, is also wonderful and being read by all!

5-0 out of 5 stars best ky book i've come across
this book explains ky thoroughly and is very simple to understand. i highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good reference and practice book
This book is very good for reference of Kundalini Tantra subject. As we see with al books of Bihar School of Yoga, it also includes some practices that can be done also, it is not only a book of theory but gives direct and clear explanations about how-to's. But a yoga beginner will possibly find the book a bit complicated because of the terminology and practice types.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but you need an experienced teacher
This book is an excellent resource for experienced yoga practitioners. Beginners would be confused, and beginners shouldn't be attempting to raise their kundalini. Everyone attempting to do such should be studying under a teacher or guru who has experienced a kundalini awakening (which are few and far between) and knows how to help you. If you want to know the ins and outs, and know what kinds of questions to ask your teacher/guru, than I highly recommend this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I definitely agree with the other reviews on this cd!
Everything that everyone has said is definitely true. This cd is teaching me a new way of approaching the world that I never would have thought possible. Even when I'm not listening to the cd, whenever I am in a really stressful situation like sitting in traffic or working to meet deadlines, I just imagine the cd. I automatically feel completely relaxed, like I can deal with whatever comes my way. Then when I get home I just pop the cd in, let go of all the day's stresses, and just get back in touch with myself. I bought this cd after reading the reviews, too, and I wasn't led astray! I recommend this to anyone who deals with stress on a daily basis (which is pretty much anyone), and I am going to get copies for all of my family members and friends because I definitely have some friends who need to chill out. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars R & R
A friend reccomended Yoga Nidra to me after I was complaining about always feeling tired and overwhelmed.I think alot of people deal with the same problem everyday. With three kids, a husband, and as the principal of a highschool it is so difficult to turn your mind off and realx.Even when I had a rare minute to relax I wasn't able to utilize it because my mind was always running.I went ahead and tried Yoga Nidra. It took a few times to really get into it but now I love it.I do it a few times a week before work and I can definitely feel the difference.I feel more alert at work and I think it has helped my patience with the kids at home and at school.I feel like I am more energized and it has helped me to be able to just do my day better.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Level of Awareness
A coworker referred me to this CD.Thank you Larry.I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. This guide has helped me successfully work through emotional issues that have clouded my happiness.Funny, every time I listen to the CD it is like a different first time experience. It has helped me to open up and put my energies of love and sorrow "out there".They have come back to me 10 fold in only positive ways.Best wishes to all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Reading and Daily Living is the Key to Sobriety.
I kept this book with me for the first year of sobriety and mindfully lived what it said throughout my daily life.Following this I bought and utilized many other daily meditation books and continue to do so.I also wrote and published my own form of this book.To read and live inspiring words each day is effective, healing, and will lead to success and serenity in your life.Highly recommended also of course recommend my book, " Your Daily Walk with the Great Minds of the past and Present"Check it out and begin transforming your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help each day
This book is good for daily meditation. I would also recommend the book An Encounter with A Prophet to get closer to God.
