5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Different Food Visions
Can big agribusiness and local organic farming co-exist and thrive?Samuel Fromartz' new book, Organic, Inc., is a fascinating journey through American agricultural movements, starting around the turn of the century, when farming was still a small-town venture and tracing its development into agribusinesses whose products are now found on most American tables - and the movement into locally grown, organic foods, which represents not so much a return to the past as a return to wholeness and healthy living.
5-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating account of the rise of the organic food movement
After reading this book, I bought copies for everyone in my family. If you eat, you should read it. ORGANIC, INC., is a fascinating account of the rise of the organic food movement. Fromartz, a Washington D.C. based journalist, apparently loves good food almost as much as a good story. His experience as a consumer shopping at Whole Foods and at local farmer's markets made him question why he was seeking out and buying organic produce, even when it cost him more. Was it just the chemical free aspect or was he also buying into an alternative culture of health and "moral hedonism"? Who were the organic farmers who fed him and his family? What was in store for them as the growth of a small farm ideal clashed with the forces of the food industry? Fromartz hit the road to find answers. Criss-crossing the country to visit organic farmers and producers, he managed to tap into a rich vein of American culture and to meet some truly amazing people. Chapters on technical and legal issues, and the historical background of the organic movement, are mixed with chapters that vividly portray the farmers and their experiences. Fromartz is a veteran business writer and the book is thoroughly researched and well written. Reading the somewhat demanding technical chapters, I kept mumbling "unbelievable!" to myself. Who knew that conventional strawberries were grown by fumigating the soil with a neurotoxin-- methyl bromide gas--with field workers wearing full chemical warfare body suits? For my money, however, it's Fromartz'spersonal asides and his evocative rendering of the farmers lives as they go about their work that make this book come alive. These stories put all the information in the book in a context of human struggle in pursuit of an ideal against overwhelming odds, which makes them unavoidably dramatic and often moving. Fromartz is too good a journalist to come off as an advocate. This is a fair assessment of the many issues and conflicts within the organic movement. But having read this book, I have renewed respect for the people who grow the organic food I choose to eat. I will say a small prayer of thanks before I bite into that next pesticide free strawberry. It's come at a considerable price, one not paid by me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine business exploration of the entire industry; not just one company
Organic food has grown at a rate of 20 percent yearly in a sluggish food industry, yet many still can't define what makes food organic, why it's better, and how it fits into the food industry. Here to answer these and more questions is ORGANIC INC: NATURAL FOODS AND HOW THEY GREW. Samuel Fromartz is a business journalist: his reporting delves into the heart of the organic food industry and concept, tracing changing consumer choices, educational processes, organic food's anti-industrial roots over a century ago, and those who fostered new approaches on food production. A fine business exploration of the entire industry; not just one company.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Pep Talk
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid pep talk.Keith Harrell gives great advice in an enthusiastic manner. The book is rich with examples from the authors personal experience and those of his friends and associates. It certainly does the trick in inspiring the reader, however the material is primarily a rehash of material found in other books. If it is a new or novel approach to life changing steps that you're looking for you won't find it here, however if you are looking for a nice spark to jump start your personal goals then ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-Thoughtful-Useful
As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with eating disorders I found this book very helpful, it initiated into much of the important subject matter to be reflected on in treating these illnesses; and has since served as a useful guide worth rereading and reflecting on time and time again.I saw Carolyn speak at an eating disorders conference a year ago and her strong clinical background, her personal experience, her creativity and compassion come through as clearly in this book as they did in listening to her.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Answer, This is it !
I have lost weight all of my life. I have lost well over 500 pounds. (20 to 30 pounds per year) Gain, lose, gain lose; I took comfort in knowing the bears do it. The only problem as Deepak notes is that there is scientific evidence that yo yo weight control is not good for your health. With the exception of those who are clinically obese, over 25% above the normal weight for your body type, the yo yo'er is a big risk. I have successfully done just about every diet out there. The only problem is that each of them is based on excluding a food group out of your diet. After a while you crave that food group.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not-So-Perfect Book about Perfect Weight
This book was less than helpful for me.First of all, the section on figuring out your body type was confusing and I did not come up with a clear-cut answer.Although this book contained some interesting theories and ideas, the majority of the techniques and suggestions are completely impractical for anyone with a normal life, schedule and job.For example, I work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and most days without a lunch "break".I eat in the car on the way to my next client. So how am I supposed to eat a large, hot meal at a specific time, made of freshly cooked food and not leftovers?Really, unless they invent microwave ovens for cars, it's not going to happen. Also, some of the other ideas were just downright unappealing to me, bordering on disgusting (drinking boiled warm milk and sipping hot water with ginger all day while eliminating cold drinks). This plan may be very effective for the independently wealthy who are able to sit meditating in a beatiful natural setting and have a personal shopper and chef to wait on them. But for the rest of us, this book does not contain much practical advice for people with busy lives.I know myself and this is a weight loss program requiring too many radical changes and impractical ideas that I would never get past the first week.I found this book to be a not-so-perfect weight loss theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
There are a ton of thyroid books out there and many of them reputable.I'm glad I found this one co-written by doctor/nurse husband and wife team. They seem to understand the subtle interplay among the hormones--not just the thyroid--and this is what makes their approach different, and possibly, life-transforming if you've been suffering from hormonal imbalance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing balance back into my own life
I had been feeling "fuzzy" in my thinking for months.I assumed it was my hectic lifestyle or my daily caffiene habit that was causing this.No amount of sleep made me feel better. In the afternoons, I was fatigued. Weight had started to creep up on me, even though I live an active lifestyle. My periods were difficult and I found myself feeling as if my body was betraying me.What could be wrong?
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is an excellant book for those of us who know or feel we have an imbalance. Its helps you identify the root cause of your imbalance and covers all the latest supplements and natural hormones to put you on the straight and narrow.I thought my problems were due to reproductive hormones and whilst there were imbalances my real problem symptoms were being caused by the adrenals.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you still think cholesterol causes heart disease, this book's for you.
Have you taken meat & eggs out of your diet? Are you still trying to limit saturated fat to less than 10% of your total calories? Are you popping statins to keep that cholesterol level below the maximum de jure? How about some pills for that hypertension? Do you need more little brown bottles sitting on the bathroom vanity? Don't be fooled by the title of this book. Scott Deron takes the politically correct route through the "cholesterol & saturated fat" minefield, choosing dogma over science at every turn. Where's the new information about CRP in this book? Eighty percent of this book is a rehash of the same bromides we've been swallowing for 30 years. Cardiovascular disease, meanwhile, has continued to climb unabated. If you're looking for the root cause of cardiovascular disease, you won't find it in this book. If you're looking for interventions that split with the already-disproved AMA/AHA doctrine, you won't find that here either. Do yourself a favor. Use yourmoney to buy Colpo's "The Great Cholesterol Con", McCully's "The Heart Revolution" or Francis' "Never Be Sick Again". Your heart will love you for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Book With A Big Message
Dr. Jane Goodall has done it again. In her gentle and unassuming style she has wielded a strong message--in this case--a call to consciousness. Reading "Harvest for Hope" has made me so much more aware of my own personal choices and how these connect to the "collective" choices of my larger community. I have been motivated to question many of my "consumer" behaviors in a new light. However, after reading this book I am also motivated to celebrate mindful eating and to recognize the joy that can come from indulging in the earth's bounty in a responsible way. Thank you again, Dr. Goodall!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read with wonderful insight
Having read a variety of organic minded eating books I found this book refreshing because of the new things I learned, that make my lacto ova vegetarian mindset even more serious.Like I didn't know how they grow farm raised salmon or tiger prawns and that it is both less healthy and more expensive in the long run.Or that one of my favorite television chefs, Jamie Oliver from Britain who is known as the Naked Chef, is responsible for getting healthy foods into the British public schools, via his Feed Me Better campaign.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening
In this book I got much more than I thought possible.Besides being well written, poignant and having a thought provoking subject the book clearly demonstrates very real dangers in our current food culture around the world and ways to change them.

This book has alot of information that was really helpful for me with the celiac disease that I have been diagnosised with this past month. What the doctors didn't probably think to tell me I learned out of this book. I now have a better understanding with this disease on what to expect in the future. This book covers alot of different areas from recipes, what foods to avoid, web sites to contact for more information, etc. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who has Celiac Disease to help them better understand what their life is going to be like in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive system of cleansing which includes many delicious recpies
This being one of the more niche books of the raw/living foods genre, it was not until I had been at least two years into it had I bothered to pick it up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoker and verypractical
Having had oral surgery and not being able to eat solids,I came to this book looking for liquid diet suggestions. While the Salad section (and others) are of no use I found the soups and beverages recipes have a variety and originality that was most impressive and certainly perks a jaded appetite. Although the book is of limited use to me personally, what I have been able to obtain from it still makes the purchase well worthwhile. I recommend cancer patients using alternative therapies to aid their recovery, have a close look at this book. The LifeFood principle is a valid extension to alternative medicine. However it must be emphasised this is a recipe book, based on the Lifefood theory-(the theory of which is dealt with extensively in first few chapters)- it only refers to health benefits in a general way.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The proof is in the eating.
Tonight, I had the honor of dining at the home of a raw foods chef, who served a meal of such heavenly, incredible deliciousness, I had to ask where he found the inspiration to his dishes. He showed me this book, and as I glanced through it, I decided immediately that I MUST have it!

AGELESS BODY is Deepak's attempt to neutralize the word "old" as in old age.The writer has a knack for making common words, like "body, "mind" and "self," into profound concepts. His technique is to overlay his abstract ideas with suggestive experimental studies. But ambiguity in interpreting these studies abound.
3-0 out of 5 stars To Live To Eternity...
How would it feel to live forever; could you feel young when your body looks old.Your body is aging beyond your control because it has been programmed to live out the rules of collective conditioning. What you need is the body/mind connection.Beginning at age 30, the average human body starts to come unhinged: wrinkles appear, skin loses tone and freshness, muscles sag, fat catches up with muscle, eyesight and hearing taper off.As the bones thin and become brittle and break easily, stamina and endurance decline. You just can't do the things you are used to doing. To transform the patterns of the past, you must know what they are made of and how to stop the progress of deterioration. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that details Holistic approach to living longer
I enjoyed reading this book. Another book by the same author- 'Grow younger, live longer: 10 steps to reverse aging' is a practical guide to implement what Ageless Body, timeless mind talks about. I highly recommend readers to read the later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, excellent advice, highly recommended!
I love this book! I had never heard of Dr. Gillian before I saw her book at a local bookstore a week ago (I live in California and I don't believe she is as well known here and I wish she was). I flipped threw it and immediately knew I had to buy it! I found it easy to read and understand, very straight forward and honest. The fact of the matter is if you eat bad food you feel bad, whether you like that message or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Nutrition Guide
I first received Dr. Gillian McKeith's book "Living Food for Health" last Christmas from my sister-in-law from London, England. My husband Eugene & I are missionaries in Spain so could'nt get another one here. When I was out to Canada in June, I looked for it to give to my mother but couldn't find any in the book stores in Oakville, Ontario which was a surprise. While ordering from amazon I got this book as well.It is beautifully illustrated with so much good information at a glance and easy to understand.I would recommend this book to everyone interested in their health. Thanks Liz

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
Very clear, easy to understand, gets to the point, lovely book, well thought of, from teens upwards.Very clear, I have bought many books about health over the years, and got bored with them, this book I enjoyed so much I ordered another for my daughter in-law, plus bought Dr Gillian McKeiths other book called Living Food for Health, which is equally good. Both books are very educational, and enjoyable to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
The truth will set you free.If you want to learn how the body heals and defends itself then read this book. This is ESSENTIAL reading for anyone concerned about their health or about the health of someone they care about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pamphlet, very little value
This is the first "book" I have bothered getting about glyconutrients. It is a short pamphlet with about four pages of real information - the rest was filler, only good for those that are completely lacking any nutritional erudition. If you want this much information just do an internet search and you will find more for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wellness technology which will change the world.....
In short, when you're ill, toxic, malnourished or under a great deal of stress or trauma, your body may fail to manufacture the tiny amounts of sugars (glyconutrients) that must be incorporated into the receptors. The cell receptor sites are made of glycoproteins -- glyconutrients and protein in varying combinations. These have specific functions. Cellular function absolutely relies on correctly formed cell receptors; in fact, 86 diseases have been linked to malformed receptors. For instance, lupus has been linked to a deficiency of mannose.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for anyone with cancer or less-than-perfect health
My Mother is currently undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. I was frightened and anxious and unsure how to help my mother recover fully and quickly. And then God sent me an angel in the form of Caroline Sutherland and her wonderful book! Caroline explained clearly and simply what my mother should eat and drink, and what she must avoid.
5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
Nothing I tried ever worked before. I had tried every diet out there. I was tired all the time, and could not seem to lose weight no matter what I did--even working out daily didn't help much. Caroline has given me the key to solving my health issues. I am losing weight easily now and am getting more in tune with the reaction my body has to the food I eat. I can now immediately tell if I have consumed something I should not have. 3-0 out of 5 stars informative book
I was excited to read the book. The first 3 chapters were excellent. Talking about health issues and problems that cause them I can relate to. After that, I encountered areas where I disagree. I won't read the whole book again, just the first chapters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read. Practical and fascinating. It changed my view on health and self care.
Once I opened the first page of this book I could hardly stop reading it. It is as deep and practical as it is easy to read. It gave me the most valuable knowledge on Indian Ayurvedic medicine, a deeper understanding of my body type, and how to use -- in daily life -- simple techniques and the appropriate food to keep or recover health ... I strongly recommed this book to anyone willing to either recover or keep a good mind-body health.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent complimentary medicine
Dr. Deepak Chopra is one of the worlds foremost authoroties on the link between traditional Western medicine and complimentary medicine based on Ayurvedic principals, at least in my mind. I may be biased here, since I have read and listened to much of Dr. Chopra's work and utilized in my life in many ways. Perfect Health was the first book I read by Chopra and it edged me on in my search for this state we call "perfect health".
2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title
This was a good read if you want to learn about the Ayurvedic health principles. If that is what you are looking for, then this is the book for you.My disappointment was in the title.I expected more of Quantum Healing.I still plan on reading more Deepak, but wish I had known that this book was strictly Ayurvedic methodology only. ...
