5-0 out of 5 stars You "Kneed" This Book
Corny review title, I know. But if I only knew ten years ago (five years, one year) what I know now...what I know now because of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Readable knee book, but poor or lack of images
I found this book helpful, but dissappointing because the author could have made his explanations much clearer with the help of (coloured) pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knee Crisis Handbook

5-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating look at stress and the immune system
This book is useful for students, scientists, and those who are otherwise interested in integrative medicine. Sternberg augments her explanation of the stress-immune connection with interesting and relevant research studies. I found it useful as a student studying neuroscience and as an individual trying to understand and manage stress in my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum
I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of a Sensitive Human Being
Brilliant scientific exploration of the mind-body connection expressed in compelling, animated realism. I enjoyed this delightful learning experience. Dr. Sternberg not only demonstrates outstanding knowledge and expertise in the field of psychoneuroimmonology, but she does so through the eyes of a sensitive, caring human being. A true inspiration to read many times over. Especially recommended for anyone who is looking for a way to enhance their health and well-being.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all people serious about health!
It doesn't matter what diet plan you are on - this is a must read book.If you believe in the government food pyramid, then challenge yourself. If you follow another low-carb plan, then learn more.I'm on Atkins but I think the Protein Power LifePlan is a great book.It covers different material than the original Protein Power book (which I also gave 5 stars), so don't think that if you've read that onem you can skip this one!
5-0 out of 5 stars Protein Power Lifeplan
This an excellent guide for health improvement. It isn't possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the method until the knowledge obtained can be put to use over a period of time and conclusions drawn.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent path to better eating and living
I listen to audio books in my car, so my attention gets divided.

5-0 out of 5 stars I quit!
I'm not a big fan of the self help genre and never would have read this book if it wasn't lying around at a time when I was bored.Fortunately, I did read it, it took me about half an hour to read, and now I'm a nonsmoker.I haven't had a cigarette for a week, I quit cold turkey and I don't ever want to pick up another.Buy this book for yourself or for a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I just don't want to pick them up anymore
I read this book before going to sleep, it's very short, quite sharp and works a treat!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than I Bargained For!
I never realized that I could make my own beauty products!I thought they had to be manufactured in a "laboratory"!Well, the kitchen is the only laboratory one needs. Not only was I very tired of paying outlandish prices for skin moisturizers and beauty creams, some of them actually irritated my skin more than helped.I searched the web for books on "homemade" personal care products.I thought, 'what have I got to lose?'The facial moisturizer recipe in this book was extremely easy (and fun) to make, and ... my skin has never felt or looked better.I have made many of the products in this book. Not only do they all work, but the ingredients are readily available, simple to assemble and inexpensive to make.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving this book!
I became interested in making my own beauty products for about one year now which is about when i bought this book.It is truly incredible. It is full of interesting and easy to follow recipes. The list of beauty ingredients in abcorder is wonderful because it exlains the use of items and where you can find them. I just cant stop reading this book over and over again. I try new recipes and then read more and try more.I bought Cox's other book "beauty for the seasons" (gift giving) it too is great, but this one is the best beginner and experienced person's choice.I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I found this book inspiring and a good resource for a newbie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your life back
Hundreds of folks are getting their lives back because of this book. I know, because I own a very active, free Yahoo! message board for all non-dieters. My members come in having read a variety of books on non-dieting. Many of them love to refer to "OO" when sharing their recovery. I am happy to give this book a five star review. -- Linda Moran

5-0 out of 5 stars challenging book
This is the book that had the most deep impact on my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only approach that works in the longrun.
About 8-9 years ago I used this approach to finally establish a healthy relationship to my body and food after years of painful, damaging, obsessive dieting and disordered eating that had taken over my life.Although the approach is scary at first, it's the only one that has ever worked for me.Following yet another diet only perpetuates the underlying problems with food/eating.Although I was panicked at first about gaining weight when all food was allowed, after about a year I was 10-15 pounds lighter than I'd been when I was constantly dieting.I was suprised to find that when I truly listened to and respected my body's hunger and normalized my relationship with food, my body settled into a healthy, lower weight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Long on rhetoric...short on facts, this book is mostly hype
I bought and read this book years ago.At the time, the Diamonds seemed to make a good case for their viewpoint. After researching their claims over the years,I have discovered that most of what they claim is pure fiction and has no basis in the real world. They seem to know enough about their subject to be dangerous but not enough to actually offer sound advice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Detractors haven't tried it. Fruit's Not a Fad.
The negative reviews seem to be all the same and don't seem to have tried it and maybe even haven't read it.There's nothing unhealthy about eating fruit in the morning.Eating anything you want after noon is hardly a fad diet. The book just suggests eating things separately like a big steak and greens rather than adding a bunch of fillers like potatoes. It suggests eating all the starches you want but just not with the steak as it complicates the digestion process.I like to eat that way anyway.Give me more meat and less potatoes any day!The book suggests exercise. That's not a fad. It's just common sense. The book suggests not drinking coffee. If you eat fruit, you can really pound the coffee and still come out feeling good.I like Fast Food Friday's more than most but eating more sensibly is nothing but a positive. If you are a runner or some other athlete and have plateaued, you should consider their suggestions. You won't hit the wall so easy if you eat the fruit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable information
The authors wing it and talk through their hats.I'll give you two examples.

I have read everyone of Og Mandinos Books and all I can say is that he writes with brilliance, clarity, enthusiasm, and spirit. You can never go wrong with any of his books. 5-0 out of 5 stars 17 Rules for a better way to live
Illustrative with many of his inspiring and life changing stories, Og Mandino tells us in this book, that "we have forgotten one of the basic facts of life. When we were given dominion over this world, we were also given dominion over ourselves. We are our own navigators. It was never God's intention to chart a map for each of us." "Life is a game" he also says, "it's spiritual, mysterious and precious." But in order to play the game you have to know the rules.5-0 out of 5 stars Rules To Live By... 1 By 1, Day By Day
This is yet another great book by Mandino. I enjoyed this book because it stated "each rule to live by for a better way to live" and was expressed in a way that could be easily understood. I copied these "17 Rules To Live By" and I keep them easily accesible- as I refer to them often. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs someone "to grab their hand and walk with them through life on a daily basis". I have read several books by Og Mandino and have come to the following conclusion... there is no one else in the world better to walk with me in my journeys through life; than my great friend, Og. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Success, Loosely Defined
Ruth Levine's Millions Saved: Proven Successes in Global Health is a valuable contribution to public health literature.By detailing numerous interventions which have been successful at addressing the problem they tackled, Levine exposes the reader to the possibility of cost-effective health interventions with real impact in lower-income countries.Too often public health writing focuses on the numerous barriers to successful health improvement, and for those public health workers working in developing countries, burnout and despair runs high.Levine puts the spotlight on what has been done, and in several cases shows how the success can be spread to other areas.
4-0 out of 5 stars great intro to public health problems and solutions
This book provides a diverse set of 17 cases in which governments and international organizations succeeded in large-scale public health interventions. This is an excellent foil to the commonly circulating pessimism regarding the aid industry. (For an over-the-top example of that, see Graham Hancock's Lords of Poverty.) Drawing on both well-documented secondary sources and on interviews with key players in the cases, the authors make convincing arguments for causality between the intervention and the health improvement in most of the cases.

Editorial Review

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your currentstation in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled"Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsyoffice workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (whichmay reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knowshow to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion isthat most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it inslowly and then sleep on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read...some useful advice for the peak performer!
I picked up this book in a used bookstore, again instinctively, after having read Veronique's The Art of Doing Nothing & William Anthony's The Art of Napping. Although the book does not offer really cutting-edge stuff, I find it fascinating, as it offers some useful advice for the peak performer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Power Sleep by Maas
A main thesis of the work is that sleep is critical to peak
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a waste of money but not what I expected
I liked this book in a lot of ways, but when it ended, I was dissappointed. There is worthwhile information about sleep and interesting quotations from famous people about sleep but there seemed to be a lot of filler in this book. The book throws out many statistics but rarely explains how these stastics were obtained.I also thought the book contained too many horror stories about deaths related to people falling asleep while operating heavy machinery etc.,.Read more

Editorial Review

Merck Pharmaceuticals have edited a clear and comprehensive reference for older adults.Dr. Mark Beers begins with the age-old questions: when does a person become old and why does the body change? The remainder of this guide is divided into preventive and active care for self and others. The list of topics is a virtual everything you want to know about aging: nutritional needs, finding a doctor, understanding tests, surgery and rehabilitation, and long term care. More than one hundred specific medical conditions including fractures, constipation, tinnitus, dental disease, and dementia are explained and cross referenced with useful details. Although a clinical explanatory model prevails, non-traditional methods such as acupuncture and homeopathy receive honorable mention. The guide takes an unflinching look at sexuality, end of life decisions, and mistreatment of elderly adults. Other practical c! hapters are devoted to driving dilemmas and navigating the Byzantine financing of health care. This information is punctuated with essays from older adults--including a cheeky Max Sendak cartoon. The essays, along with charts, photos, and illustrations help to lessen the book's encyclopedic tone. Many older adults and the people who care for them will welcome the well-organized format and richly detailed information of this guide. Read more

Let's start with the bad (beyond the gimmicky idiotic title). The author's tone is beyond smarmy. She congratulates herself and her countrywomen on almost every page - my favorite being her tale of being 40-something and going to the liquor store to buy alcohol and being asked for her identification to prove she was of age.Oh please.(And as another reviewer noted, the author does like to name drop a lot - where she and her husband have traveled; the upscale hotels they've stayed in, etc.)Ironically, the smarminess is quite un-Japanese or at least, quite untraditional. One of the first things I learned when I studied Japanese was that modesty in language is paramount and that one must always deflect a compliment.Perhaps we can attribute the smarmy tone of the book to Ms. Moriyama's American husband/co-writer.Either that or she has been in the U.S. too long. 3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful
If cover photo was steaming rice as Tanizaki's quote in the book instead of the slim, but wrinkle faced author posing with white teethed grin not readily available in Japan, I might have liked the book better. It's pretty imformative history and how tofu is made and stuff. Her mom might be the last generation of Tokyo kitchen goddesses -- Showa hitoketa age group (b.1925-1935sh) know wartime hardship and re- costructed Japan to what it is today, all the while doting on their kids with luxury they themselves lacked. Result is the totally pampered, princessed, well mannered but self centered, well educated but no clue what's in the big world really, polished by spending tons of money (some of their own but more likely daddy's and honey's) middle aged woman you see on the cover. Other reviewers are correct. Just look at what's on the table in today's Tokyo kitchens run by younger housewives. Their mothers already grew up preferring fast food and ramen noodle packet, no longer bony fish with head and gills intact. I am afraid this book is not practical for diet nor recipe ( sorry, we don't do ounces we do grams) misleading to Americans with better intention. It should be titled and promoted as nostalgic culture guide written in bad English.
3-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing but difficult to put into practice
I am a big fan of Eastern food and culture so I found this book very appealing. I, however, found it very difficult to put into practice. The types of ingredients you would need to purchase to truly follow the ideas in the book are difficult to find in many areas. I don't put anything down, though, on the book itself. The writer is interesting and has a lot of good information. She presents herself and her history well without coming across as self-righteous "better than you" attitude as can come across in some of these lifestyle/diet books.

Dr Chopra details a highly readable and easy to follow "map" of creating affluence in every area of our lives. He claims that reading the entire book once through, then subsequently reading 5 pages daily will, if adopted as a lifelong habit... attract wealth!
1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money !.. Read some Physics books instead
This tape is really waste of money. I liked some tapes from Chopra but here he is loosing total focus about what he is talking about.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little Frustrating
Ok, the first half of this book does nothing more than talk about purchasing some DNA activation kit and joining the authors home base of practitioners.Similar to the "cures they do not want you to know about" scam.I will say that there is some good information in this book, but would not understand that had I not known about other holistic healing modalities that describe the same things. This book appears to be a trademark promotion based on several other holistic philosophies.More power to you if you can do it... but the author is going to have to come up with some original material. This book didn't offer me anything I haven't read about or experienced before.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Choice
Having become interested in metaphysical advancement, I stumbled across the interesting concept of DNA Activation. Thus I began my search for resources that could help me do this, and my search led me to this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Vianna Stibal Missing?
after reading the book I've just got to ask, how come the Medical Intuitive, Vianna, who started this healing technique not mentioned at all? but I did give it a 3 in case I missed that somewhere in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I have been on the Warrior Diet since I heard the concept. I think it's very intresting. Try it out. Don't be afraid of being hungry, you will not get fat from not eating. Hofmekler has the right idea, detoxify every day by "under-eating". Give it a chance and you will definately agree.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR SOME BODY TYPES
A close personal friend of mine is a successful naturopathic physician (N.D.) in Boulder, CO.He uses Dr Abbravanel's Body Type Diet which categorizes people depending on what gland is dominant in their physiology (Adrenals, Pituitary, Thyroid or Gonads(sic)) and then outlines diet principles for each.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
I agree with the author's claim that eating whole, natural foods is a healthy way to go. other than that the entire book is just like everything else you'll find on dragondoor.com: expensive pseudo-science in book form. the claim that fasting and binging all in one day is the way "we were meant to eat" is as questionable as the author's credentials. (or lack thereof.) Everyone knows how to eat healthy because we've all had it crammed down our throats since we were old enough to remember our parents saying "remember to eat all your vegetables." If you want to lose weight, use your own good judgement regarding exercise and nutrition and don't obsess over the newest fad diet or diet guru. I guarantee that if you purchase this book, you'll cast it to the side in a matter of weeks at most. yet Ori H. and dragondoor will still have made a nice profit off of your purchase. ... Read more

I did not read the whole book. I just skimmed through it because I purchased it for someone else. However, what I did read was very informative so I would recommend it to anyone interested in their health.
