2-0 out of 5 stars Yields some interesting points, but that's about it
I bought this book years ago, when I was interested in Taoism.Mr. Reid yields some interesting ideas and points about a multitude of health related subjects etc. However folks, let none of us be deceived in believing that most of what he offers is none other than some interesting ideas with little or no research, proof, or references to back them up.When he does reference, he references some Chinese sources of antiquity (perhaps), and new age gurus/crooks such as VE Irons and Herbert Shelton etc.It is interesting to note how many and how often he quotes American pop health people of the past.Check out VE Irons and Herbert Shelton, examine their past lives. Not the type of folks I would emulate in any sense. On a final note, I appreciate Mr. Reids concerns about modern man's plight for better health.Too bad he seems disillusioned about the reality of modern health issues. We all generally know what the problems are, and what the solutions may be.Eat right and in moderation, exercise, challenge the mind, and find peace. You don't need pop gurus or ancient practices to do these things.Unfortunately, many of us want the "Fountain of Youth", and an easy way to try to avoid the reality of our own mortality.Keep searching if you will, but just to think, when we were children,,,,,how we laughed at stories of those explorers and the "Fountain of Youth".

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Without boasting, this is probably my 3rd purchase of this book.I can only say that its fate or destined, that it never stay in my hands and that its meant to be gifted to someone else who may find it useful, as I have.Mr Reid's work and instruction is very thorough, and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Influencial in My Life
I do not want to gush, so I will try and be as objective as possible.I grew up as a traditional martial artist, and at the hands of a hospital I was done a grave injustice ... the results left me with a very youthful looking 20 year old body, with very old organs.I was in the process of rehabilitating my body when I came across Mr. Reid's work.I was very fortunate to have had the training that I did, and I was working dilligently to re-build myself ... however ... there were things missing in my approach.HUGE gaps were filled in by Mr. Reid's enlightening research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A critical analysis of statin drug trials
This book by Uffe Ravnskov does for cholesterol what The Skeptical Environmentalist did for environmentalism. Sometimes we need to be prodded out of our complacency and this book does an admirable job. The other nice thing about this book is that it does not peddle faddish diets, vitamins or herbs, its just a good critical analysis of the existing data. It is also very well written, which makes for a very easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Thirteen Sins of Medical Statistics
The first sin is misdirection. Many studies indicated there were inverse relationships between mortality and cholesterol, especially at advanced age, and with women. The researchers ignored this, and stated unequivocally the data showed a direct proportional relationship between cholesterol and mortality.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Grain of Salt
This book is a review of research concerning heart disease, cholesterol, and diet. The author makes little attempt to be objective, and pushes continually for his opinion that research to date has not been able to prove conclusively that a diet high in cholesterol leads to heart disease. In the beginning of the book, he carefully lays out the logic for the reader, separating the main hypotheses concerning cholesterol so that he can then bring each into question in turn. For Ravnskov, the main hypotheses are: "a high-fat diet leads to high cholesterol levels in the blood" and "high cholesterol levels in the blood lead to arteriosclerosis and heart attacks."He also examines related hypotheses of perhaps lesser importance, such as "lowering your cholesterol level with lengthen your life" or "polyunsaturated oils are good for you".Each chapter begins with a description of what Ravnskov terms a "myth" concerning cholesterol or heart disease, which Ravnskov then counters with a critical analysis of the research purported to prove the claim contained in the "myth".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Way I've Ever Been Able to Lose Weight!
I have tried literally every diet book out there - Fat Flush, South Beach, Zone, Body For Life - and Weight Watchers numerous times. The only diet that has ever worked for me is SMD.I went on it in desperation 3 years ago and lost 25 lbs in about 6 weeks.I kept all the weight off until I got pregnant two years ago. With 15 baby pounds left to lose, I'm going back on next week!
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet:Plus Dr. Tarnower' Lifetime Keep-Slim Program
This book contains the "original" low carb diet. If you read the book and follow the plan carefully you will have excellent results.I have followed the medical diet for the full 14 days, used the "keep-slim" plan to follow and have enjoyed success with it. You are never hungry and your carbohydrate cravings disappear almost immediately! There are very helpful aids to keep you "on track". Many questions and answers regarding the diet are covered throughout the book!I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Acknowledgement Review
Dr. Tarnower created what might be the worlds healthiest diet back in the late 1970's. Since he was a cardiologist his primary concern was, of course, with the ticker. The book is written in plain english so lay persons, like myself, may understand it. The only problem I have is with who is given the very first acknowledgement in the begining of the book. Jean Harris is thanked for her help with getting the book published. Since Jean Harris is also the person who shot Dr. Tarnower five times, and eventhough this sounds redondant I will say it anyway, and killed him, one year after the book was published, I see no reason why the acknowledgement to her was not deleted from all future printings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dan....brother, oh my.
The Great Physician is God. He designed our bodies, told us how to care for them and gave us all that we need to provide for them. His instructions are in the Bible. Jordan Rubin is the guy who put into phrasing that we can understand in today's world. Before you start bashing someone, why don't you do a little research and find out correct information. By the way, God loves you anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewer "dan" is confused.
Rubin is NOT refering to himself in the title of his book, nor would he ever use this title for himself. Most people with even a minimal education in literature know that the reference is to Jesus Christ, who has been called The Great Physician throughout written history because of His healing miracles recorded in the Scriptures.
1-0 out of 5 stars The Great Physician?
Who is Rubin referring to?Certainly not himself. He's a naturopath (which is fine) but is also accredited by a company that gives one a "C.N.C" certificate after answering multiple choice questions and of course sending in their $150.All his books are the same:designed to sell his extremely overpriced and questionable supplements. He's a master marketer, but ceratinly not a Great Physician. And his reputation is fading fast. All one needs to do is look at the Amazon page for his first book "Patient, Heal Thyself", where it's selling for just over a dollar... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO MANAGING HYPERTENSION NATURALLY - WITH MEDS ONLY AS NEEDED
IN A NUTSHELL: E-Z to grasp balanced approach
5-0 out of 5 stars now, this is my kind of doctor!
I never thought I'd find a cardiologist who agrees with me that prescription drugs are a last resort, but here he is. Believe it or not, he even understands enough about real life to tell you to get your chi in shape! If you want to know which supplements live up to their hype (and some of them do), this is the book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm already eating lots of rice and soy...
Ever wonder what Asparagus, Avacados and Anger have to do with hypertension?Although some folks suggest you should not eat Avocados if you are on a low fat diet, perhaps you will reconsider after you read Steven and Jan Sinatra's book. And although asparagus are available seasonally, so you may want to eat as many of the fresh ones as you can and avoid the canned variety unless you wash the salt off. Frozen asparagus are okay but they lack the crunch of course. The Sinatras say your best bet is to freeze your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book for cosmetic breast surgery information
I bought all the books on cosmetic breast surgery, while researching my desire to have my breast lifted and enlarged, this book is by far the best, most informative and well- written. I also went on several consultations with different doctors and Dr. Freund was the most helpful and comforting physicians. His knowledge made me confident and the results were better than i hoped for. P.S. I travelled from North Carolina to see him and it was worth the trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Excellent Information
I have been considering a breast reduction for years. This book answered all of my questions so thoroughly that I almost didn't have any left for my plastic surgeon. My surgery went very well, and I am pleased with the outcome. Thanks for writing such a clear and informative book that answers the many questions women have concerning breast surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Robert Michael Freund Walks on Water....I don't say that about every doctor!
Ladies if you are looking for a well-grounded expert on breast reconstruction, Dr. Freund is the best. From the second you walk into his office you know you are in good hands. I had a serious problem and he brought me through it with flying colors and compassion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Naturopathic Genius!
It seems that everyone in the world has an opinion on how to be healthy and how to eat right.I've read a lot of junk, and I'm happy to say that Valerie Saxion is right on the money. Why?Because I feel great, all the time.Sorry, very hokey, but very true. Her advice is really good, and shows meaningful ways on suppressing your appetite, eating healthier and finding the right supplements. She even included a directory of practicing naturopatic doctors in the United States.I'm thankful for this book, which uses Biblical examples on how the human body should work, and how to cleanse one's self of parasites, and other nasties. If you're serious about health, this book is a great start.

It's truly amazing to find a book that lives out its title. After puting the things I've learned from this book into practice I see it really works. 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful resource to learn the holistic medicine
I have read important issues of this book for three or four times and it really gives useful information as to how to view a disease from a holistic viewpoint. As an oriental medicine specialist in South Korea, I have been quite curious for what it is like for american alternative medical professionals to approach many kinds of disease, and as I read through this book I have been able to get a good picture of what the holistic medicine is like. As a result in these days combination of holistic and oriental medicine has come true in my clinic and many patients who have some kind of incurale chronic disorders gradually have got relieved after they received the appropriate combined therapy. So far as practiced the combind therapy of holistic and oriental, I am sure that the effect gradually goes up and that the more and more patients will turn to my clinic. I am very grateful to Dr. Ralph Golan for his book. Though not the only one book it is that I have read, good grasp of it enabled me to explore other useful volumes concerning alternative medicine. Medical specialists as well as laypersons who are interested in alternative medicine might read this book and could figure out how to set up a strategy for the improvement of a sickness that has not yet been relieved by anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and surgeries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This is an excellent book - I swiped this book from my dad, who is a doctor very focused on healthy living, and loved it. Returned it only when I bought myself a copy. It is very informative and would be overwhelming with the amount of info it provides were it not so well organized. This is written for people who are serious about understanding how different foods affect your body and what you can do to get yourself out of trouble (as most of us are) as well as what you can do to prevent a comprehensive variety of problems. I have referred back to this book more times than I can count. Only wish it contained more ideas for healthy recipes. Highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutritional emphasis for healthier living
After eight years of practicing conventional medicine, Ralph Golan, M.D., realized he would be happiest practicing "preventive and wellness medicine." Twelve years later this Seattle physician decided to share his approach - combining naturopathy and conventional medicine - in this convincing and inspirational health guide and reference work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Healthy For Life: by Ray Strand
I have enjoyed the writing of Ray Strand in the past, and his being the author of this book was partly instrumental in my decision to purchase it.The title seems to imply that the subject matter would cover a variety of concerns and indeed, the first quarter of the book deals with the generalities in lifestyles and health. However, the main thrust of this book appears to be the effect of high glycemic foods on the present, almost epidemic occurence of diabetes in the general population, from children and adolescents to adults. If this is your area of interest, this book is quite thorough and covers a lot of territory regarding the effects of glycemic overload and what can be done about it.I find the author's inclusion of several weeks of sample, remedial menus to be very helpful. This book would be beneficial to everyone given the present state of America's health trends and Dr. Strnd writes clearly and in depth about the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy for LIfe: Developing Healthy Lifestyles that Have the Side-Effect of Permanent Weight Loss

Editorial Review

What a novel idea: if you want to know how to successfully lose weight, study the real experts--the people who have done it! Registered dietician Anne Fletcher did just that. She surveyed 160 "masters" who succeeded in losing at least 20 pounds and keeping the weight off for at least 3 years. This was the minimum; most lost far more weight--an average of 63 pounds--and more than one-third have kept the weight off for a decade or more.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I like this book. I don't love it. It has interesting mini-stories about people who lost weight and kept it off, just like the title states, but doesn't go into great detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true weight loss tool
This book was suggested by my dietitian.I have been impressed with the level of research and authority contained in the book.It is reassuring to see the process that I am going through is the same thing experienced by others and that they were, and remain, successful in their weight loss.I highly recommend this book and consider it a "must have" for anyone who is serious and committed to changing their lives through weight loss.

4-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the ugly
The good: The advice here from successful weight-losers is wide-ranging, generally useful, and presented in context so that you know something about the person's weight history and particular circumstances. Not all of it is going to be useful for any particular person, of course, but the perspective of successful people is, as another reviewer remarked, like gold.

At first blush most of the information if acted on in the book will probably result in adding years, if not decades to some peoples lives. My own recommendation is to do your own independent research [separate from this book], first, if you make any life changing adjustments, particularly if it involves consuming vitamins suggested in the book. Some of the recommendations only strengthened what I already knew, such as taking Co-Q10 on a daily basis.Co-Q10 is expensive, but a very good nutrient that can help protect your body from free radical damage, resulting in reduced risks of succumbing to various cancers and heart diseases.Other recommendations in the book did raise some concerns for me such as consuming L-Carnosine on a daily basis.Research i've found dating back to 1984 expressed that L-Carnosine built up in the body can potentially have dangerous neurotoxic side effects.Taking too much of it could induce what is medically referred to as "Carnosinemia", which also can be inherited. Most of the oral vitamin supplements in the market offer L-Carnosine at 500MG doses, recommending you take it once or twice daily. The book recommends 200MG per day in single or "divided doses" and stressed "its low level of toxicity"...... but I don't know how much is too much frankly, so I will avoid this particular molecule until more research data is known.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide To The Life-Extension Revolution!
Over the years I have read several health oriented books promoting ideas for healthier and longer lives for us, this one is by far the best, containing down-to-earth advice of a practical and far reaching nature. Many areas are covered, including supplements from arginine to zinc, social issues, and lots of other topics. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Eye Opener
With a title like, "The Baby Boomers' Guide To Living Forever," it would be easy to pass over this book with the assumption that it is a journey into some sort of medical never-never land. But as I quickly discovered, this is far from the case. "The Baby Boomers' Guide" shapes as an absolutely fascinating, at times scholarly, tour of what middle age America can do to improve both the quality and quantity of life. Dr. Grossman covers a remarkable spectrum of topics and, with support from co-authors who are experts in each of dozens of medical/health areas, provides an astonishing treasure of useful information. This is one of those rare books that can literally change the course of the reader's life. "Baby Boomers' Guide" is must reading for anyone who is serious about extending their years, perhaps beyond anything that they ever imagined was possible. ... Read more

I learned about the "Diamond Method" from Tony Robbin's Living Health seminar and of course I now wish I had done some research before I wasted my money (on both Living Health and Fit for Life).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Chronic Heartburn" Is a Sweet Dish
In an area filled to the lid with cookbooks of every taste and portion, "Chronic Heartburn: Managing Acid Reflux and GERD Through Understanding, Diet and Lifestyle" is a welcome and well-prepared arrival for gastronomical considerations little served at present. For anyone who suffers heartburn, and thereby tends to view the kitchen with some trepidation, "Chronic Heartburn" is a gateway to culinary freedom and delicious experience. As enjoyable to read as it is written and researched, the book offers everything: causal information of acid reflux (including informative diagrams), treatment options (including herbal ones), lifestyle modifications, guides to foods that hurt and heal, charts for effectively managing heartburn, and over one-hundred recipes, from soups to smoothies to main-course meats and seafood. Among my favorites: grilled halibut with papaya salsa, Russian-style borscht and mango chicken. As one who, like many, does suffer bouts of heartburn, I've come across few books that so effectively take the worry out of dining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Several times in the course of completing a 4 year degree in Phyto Medicine I came across the work of Donnie Yance. He is well known for his work in treating cancer with Herbal Medicine. This book provides an excellent insight into his experienced approach and use of Herbal Medicine as an adjuvant to "conventional" treatment. Clearly influenced by the great American physicomedicalist, Eli G. Jones (who treated many cancer patients in the early 20th century - when Herbal Medicine was the conventional medicine), he brings the historical evidence base & treatment approaches up to date and expands upon them in the light of modern scientific research.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
My husband and I have started the process of natural medicine in curing cancer over the past months. This book was a great asset to use in learning about how to do so and why it is important to do so.We continue to learn from it and highly recommend it to anyone using natural methods to heal themselves of cancer!

A cooperative working relationship between "allopathic" physicians and "naturalists" is long overdue in my opinion, and my opinion ought to be worth something.I am a physician with 25 years experience in cancer medicine and I have board certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology, and radiation oncology.Mr. Yance's book is a step in the right direction, and I feel it is a worthwhile reference for any physician who is interested in the nutritional welfare of his patients. The book is far from perfect, however. For example, Mr. Yance overstates the risk of carcinogenesis from therapeutic radiation, presents site-specific side effects such as dry mouth as if they were general effects of radiation, underplays the value and effectiveness of radiation for common adult tumors such as breast cancer, and claims benefit for herbal or nutritional remedies for side effects of cancer treatment even when they have been shown to be ineffective in clinical trials.Administration of vitamin B12 and folate to prevent chemotherapy-induced neuropathy is the most egregious example. At the same time, glutamine is not mentioned for prevention of neuropathy though it is known to be useful, at least for prevention of nerve injury from vinca alkaloids.Read more

I thought this book had some useful information when I first read it several years ago. After I read it, I stopped taking selenium supplements and decreased my daily dosage of vitamin C to 2,000 mg. Then I got a tumor in my neck (spring 2000), and most recently a breas
