5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need a degree to be an expert
This review is specifically in response to the comments of some reviewers who express contempt for Ms. Somer's proclaiming to have knowledge about the human body.
4-0 out of 5 stars At Least She's Trying
Suzanne has done the research, and I have already commented on this book, but because I mentioned other books, Amazon took it out.My friend Elsa commented also, and mentioned a better book-also removed.Hmm...But it's okay for "authors" to say they are authors and promote their books here.Anyway, I believe Somers has done the right thing in doing the research, the wrong thing in passing it off as "holistic".At least she is TRYING to understand her body instead of giving up control to a practicing person with initials after his name.

1-0 out of 5 stars How dare she
Suzanne Somers has crossed the line - from a sensible advocate of bioidentical hormones to an out-of-control MD-wannabe. Although she has interviewed numerous doctors for this book, she seems to have "drunk the Kool-Aid" when it comes to the crazy protocols recommended by her friend T.S. Wiley, who has zero medical credentials. Before any women buy into the Wiley Protocols outlined in this book, they should do some internet research and read about the women who have tried it and now bitterly regret it. Erika Schwartz MD was quoted in this week's New York Times as saying this book is "dangerous." She's dead right. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor's Jokes Don't Work
Yes, I understand that Doctors believe the human body is SO complex that they feel they have to add little elves, sex jokes, and personal, inside humor to make the book readable; However, you can do basic education and keep people reading by not mystifying.I personally took offense at some of the body labels and the condescending way this book approaches the body. I've read several books similar to this, all in an effort to keep my 65 year old body young, and to protect my children from disease.I found Rayna Gangi's Book, and Andrew Weil's books to be much more respectful, and hence, more informative and readable. These guys are capitalizing on the YOU premise, and obviously laughing and joking all the way to the bank.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could personally thank the authors
I also bought the RealAge makeover book.I highly recommend that if you enjoyed this book.It has even more details, IMO.I am following the workout plan in that book and have been for the last 48 days.I feel fantastic.I also got my multivitamins based on their recommendations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes - Basic - But Thats What The General Population Still Needs
As a Fitness Pro and Lifestyle Consultant - it is clear the general population still lacks knowledge of the basics. While a good number of reviews state this book is not a good one because it only covers the basics - I disagree.

3-0 out of 5 stars nothing simple about it
Once again we are being duped with the misleading description "simple". This book has what are probably very good diet/lifestyle adjustments to help you lose weight and detoxify our systems. Dr. Hyman is no doubt sincere and has clearly done his homework but to imply that this is a "Simple" program is "simply" not true. The first half of the book explains how our modern diet is poisoning our systems and causing us to gain weight ad nauseum. We get it. Why can't one of the diet Gurus come up with an eating plan that relies on foods that are both readily available in your average grocery store or produce stand instead of the stuff stocked by specialty stores and health food stores. Where does the average consumer locate "grass fed beef" and "free range chicken" on the way home from the office? Dr. Hyman this is partially why obesity is such a problem, most people in the real world don't have the time, or resources to track down all these things and they simply give up. Anyone could write a diet book with the assumption that we all have access and the ability to provide ourselves with the products you describe and suggest. It is simply lazy science to recommend these things. Want to impress us? Go into a typical grocery store with a typical budget and show us the shopping list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised by negative comments
I have read this book twice, once to just read it, twice to go back through and underline things I never wanted to forget, and now I am reading it again to get ready to put it into action.I am on the E-mail list for this doctor sending case studies of people that he has helped.I must say I am very impressed and wish all doctors could be like Dr. Hyman. He looks at the whole body to find the reasons for sickness. I am surprised by the reviews here that say this is the same old information we have heard before.I have read a lot of diet books and I learned so much in this book about other things that can effect your weight besides eating right and exercise. And if I had heard of something before, now it was explained in a way that I could understand. I felt good that a few things that I had started to believe where confirmed in this book. When trying to get to the bottom of why I am over weight, this very nice to have my thoughts validated. There was a couple reviews that sounded like the person had not even read the book. One said they expected to find out more about the glycemic index, saying they were felt cheated that there was no information, when in reality the theory of the glycemic index is out dated. We now need to pay attention to the glycemic "load" of what we are eating. If they had read the book they would have known that. Another person said that it is a vegetarian diet, which it is not. Just look at the recipes in the back of the book to know that. Please don't right a review if you have not read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Wanna Be?
"What The Bleep..." captured my curiosity, but this book almost makes me angry. There is so much more to our being than the "mind-body" connection, and the author tries to understand the spirit, but misses the mark.Making the mind the most powerful connector is not in line with mind/body/spirit reality and that makes this book disappointing. The journal format makes it very readable, but why use this format unless the ego, which is the nemesis of the mind, is what is truly in control? Go with "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," before reading this, then add a little Chopra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book addresses the age-old desire of people to move towards pleasure and away from pain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I couldn't put this book down and it's been a while since that happened. This book has a lot of great content to it (I was nervous by the simple sounding title that it woud be another fluffy feel good book where they tell you if you smile you'll feel good and you leave with no real new information). But Candace Pert doesn't play that fruit-tart game. A true scientist, she gives gives accurate and researched answers to many of the questions she's been asked over the many years from aspartame to releasing trauma through bodywork to peptide T for HIV. The book isn't a compilation of lists but weaves the information through in a narrative style so it's very enjoyable reading (as I said - it's the first book I really didn't want stop reading in a while). I first head about Candace through a friend who had her meditation/relaxation/feel good CD "Psychosomatic Wellness" so I bought it from her website too because my friend was so amazd by it -- and it is great! I was SO EXCITED when I read the part of the book that explained the science behind the CD!! I'm rambling now...but I just think this book is great! I highly recommend her CD too -- it's so effective (I don't know why Candace Pert doesn't have "Psychsomatic Wellness" on Amazon - but everyone should buy it because it's priceless and goes great with the book). Anyway, I hope this is helpful to some of you out there in InternetLand.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
There are only 2 or 3 pages addressing hypoglycemia. The advertisements address blood sugar imbalances which I thought would include hypogylcemia. Many of the recommendations will not help those with hypoglycemia and may actually be detrimental.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book for those who are having energy problems and not losing weight. I am not a classic binge eater, but I did not have the energy to do almost anything. I have weight to lose and nothing I was doing was working. I am a couple weeks into this book and I am feeling better already. My body-type swelling has gone down, I actually am getting up and doing things, etc. I have lose 4 lbs so far. I haven't lost weight in 4 years! This is a solution that is working for me. Although I am not a fan of the alternate sugars out there, I am using Stevia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
Most people who give this book negative ratings are just plain ignorant or cheap morons. The guy has done a ton of research to bring us this kind of information and he risks his life to expose the scumbag ripoffs in the food and drug industry. This book just shows how we Americans are brainwashed, tamed sheep, swollowing what we're given. Most of American food is sick and the sickness passes onto people. The milk you drink is filled with pesticides and growth hormones and even though all the scientists will say it doesn't have any effect on people, they're lying, why?because they'll get sued. That's right, there is no freedom of speech, even doctors have to watch their mouth. The fact is that the growth hormones and pesticides do transform into your body. Just why do you think the Canadians refused to feed their cows growth hormones?because they know what the effects are but us Americans, we're ignorant and lazy and we don't care. That is our attitude. So here's a guy that sheds some truth on what's going on in the food/drug industry and there's still morons who will badmouth him for doing so or some idiots who thought they'll pick up this book and all their problems will be solved. It makes me mad that there's such people out there who can misinterpret a book so badly. The guy never says you should get off your prescription drugs or try natural remedies before consulting with your doctor, it is written on the very first pages for crying out loud yet people come on here and write ridiculous reviews.Again, these must be the lazy couch potatoes who think picking up a book will cure their illness. No, you need to get off your butt on this one. If you want to be spoonfed pills, continue with your local pharmacy. I could go on forever how great this book is but I'll just say, ignore all the idiotic negative reviews and get this book and follow what it says,it's probably the best thing you can do for yourself. It's worth it's weight in gold.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was A Waste of Money!
This book was just terrible. This guy is paranoid and he thinks everything is a conspiracy.Just hog wash-Don't waist your money!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Re-Directory for information
What little information this book tells you about those "natural cures" are already common knowledge. It goes on and on, ad nauseum, about corruption. If you want more information about certain alleged cures, the book tells you to go to certain websites, and when you get there, you have to pay. It's like buying a cookbook that hardly has any recipes, and telling you that you have to go online and pay up front. What's the point of buying the book if it only has a few recipes? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. 4-0 out of 5 stars Important book with a few caveats
I am a former patient at Dr. Mercola's clinic, and I truly support everything he is trying to do with our current health crisis. His clinic helped me to overcome a serious illness when all other "regular" doctors, including the prestigious Mayo Clinic, had written me off.He truly helps many people every day, I have seen it first hand. However, I admit I was worried when I looked at the book and saw "SHOCKING LIES" on the cover.I was afraid this was a sign that he would follow the trend he uses all too often, dispensing extremely important health information in a format similar to the National Enquirer.I wish he could use a little more humility and respect for the intelligence of his readers both in his books and on his website. For example, the video he has on his website, "The Town of Allopath", is very, very good, and the message critically important, but it turns my stomach to see "Highly Acclaimed Video Causes Flood of Hate Mail" in big letters at the top of the page.Calling such an important video "highly acclaimed" himself just cheapens it, cheapens his reputation, and insults his readers.

I just finished this book and must say it has had a profound effect on the way I look at health, nutrition and the information we are spoonfed on a daily basis.I will never again eat dairy and will always question where the latest and greatest research findings came from and who funded them! This book should be required reading for every single American person today! Why the information in this book is not front page news speaks volumes about the influence agricultural lobby groups have on government, science and the media.

There isn't anything new here unless you want to fall asleep reading about cheese and whisky.Dr. Weil gives examples of how some cheese's and whisky get better as they age as if this is supposed to correlate to people.I love Dr. Weil's other books and his website but I was disappointed by this book.If you want to read a good anti-aging book read Roy Walford's 120 year Diet.An excellent read.

1-0 out of 5 stars really irritating
I found this book annoying, boring, and wordy. It contains very little actual information about aging, exercise, or anything else, and the information that it does contain is nothing that most people don't already know anyway. Basically, it is one big motivational speech that promotes exercising for women, but the male author is patronizing, condascending, and sexist. He spends a lot of time convincing the reader that exercise is actually good for women and that it's OK for women to lift weights. He seems to assume that most women are reluctant to exercise and ignorant about exercise. For example, he says that women should join a gym instead of exercising on their own so that they don't hurt themselves and are sure to stick with the program. As a woman who has exercised consistently on my own for over 20 years (including a marathon and a triathlon) I found it insulting to say the least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Younger Next Year for Women
You could still tell a man wrote this book, however, it was excellent.Sure got my attention.I started implementing his suggestions right away.Actually, the book re-enforced what my doctor had been telling me, but hearing it from a book really made an impact.Guess I'm a slow learner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, but.......
There isn't anything we don't already know we should doing in this book. And having said that, I do heartily recommend it.I love the chatty informality of the authors. The easy going style gets your attention and keeps it. Its like talking with old friends you haven't seen in a while. And that is one of the points in the book. You SHOULD keep in touch with old friends AND make new ones.So...after you've read this book, get off the couch and get going! It's never too late to start taking care of yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to live- read!
this book should not be read only be people who are obese and want to lose weight. this would also apply to those skinny people who can eat McD's and not gain an ounce.
5-0 out of 5 stars This way of eating makes perfect sense!
Bottom line, the more processed food and animal products that you eat, the more your health will suffer over time. Now you don't have to read the book. No, seriously, Dr Fuhrman dispels some of our long held beliefs in what our bodies need and crave. This is only a diet book in the sense that our diets should consist of a high concentration of certain types of foods....period.Not for a month or two and then back to the way we were eating before, but for the rest of our lives.Even if you incorporated some of the principles found in this book you would benefit. You will have to find a source of good quality fruits and veggies so you will enjoy eating them.I have been easing into this way of eating simply because I have a lot of things in my cupboards that I refuse to throw out and I have still lost 10 pounds in two weeks! And I'm only 20 pounds overweight.I'm not feeling starved either.

It looks simple and easy. It's all about you!
1-0 out of 5 stars Le Garbage
Sure, you might lose weight on this diet, but ultimately, your health will decline.Almost everything in here is packed with sugar or preservatives as the suggested ingredients.I actually GAINED weight from this plan!I was only 5 lbs overwight when I started (125 and 5'4") and gained five in about a month and a half.I switched to Ultrametabolism which actually has meat 116.5 (4 lbs. BELOW recommended weight for my height) and I feel fantastic.Buy Ultrametabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman, it contradicts everything (almost) that this book says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This is a fabulous cookbook. The recipes are simple and quick. The results are delicious and filling.I eat virtually all of my meals & snacks out of this book, and my energy remains stable throughout the day. I use about 95% of the recipes, which is unprecedented for a cookbook in my home, as my family tends to be picky. This has made dinners much for enjoyable for all of us without compromising my weight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically based approach to health maintenance and disease prevention
Mark Hyman, in his book: Ultraprevention: The 6-Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life, discuss' what he calls, 'an emerging model of medicine'. This 'emerging' model of medicine focuses on healthcare, not disease care. Dr. Hyman, rather than seeking to fix the broken parts -- or prescribe a pill for every ill, as he says, promotes a vital, disease-free life. Dr. Hyman explains the five basic forces of illness:

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up forAccess to Health
I just completed a health class and this was the textbook we used. I learned so much from using this book. This book is precise and to the point. It provides you with colorful pictures, charts, and definitions that's superb. It provides great information on Weight Management, Cancer, Heart Disease, Illicit Drugs, and Alchohol.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
The 1999 Edition of Access to Health by Donatelle and Davis is excellent!User friendly writing style, colors, charts, references, and a comprehensive collection of chapters that cover all the key personal healthrelated topics. From human sexuality to societal violence, the text coversall the bases. The authors have worked hard to bring this Edition up todate with the most current health research references/topics. I stronglyrecommend considering adoption for any introductory personal health course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ
Wow! I've spend the last year reading about disease prevention and nutrition and this book summarizes all that I've read in dozens of books, articles and websites about beating cancer, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc. I wish I would have started here. It also provides a new look at the longest live peoples on the planet which I believe is previously unpublished information. I'm going to be giving this book as a gift to everyone on my Christmas list -- it's one of those books you don't want to miss. This book would be especially good for those skeptics out there -- it contains lots of scientific data and solid evidence. And, to the reviewer who wondered about the author's age -- i believe it is 67. I recently saw a full body picture -- he's in amazing shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a loving and wonderful book.
I'm not quite sure what I expected, but since I'm only 37 years old, I didn't expect to be completely blown away. But I was. The book is a thorough look not just at aging, but at living--at how to live a life filled with joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically sound and practical guide to healthy eating
If you're looking for a book that provides practical and scientifically sound advice on diet for the average person, of any age or gender, look no further.
4-0 out of 5 stars Happy, Health Me, here I come!
Ever wondered what is good for you? This book is great! I was skeptical, but this faded. The approach of the book is to inform and maybe scare you away from bad foods. I had been eating baked potatoes because I thought that it was healthy. NO, they are a healthy alternative, but overall they are not good for you. The book goes on to discuss the new MY PRYMIAD and how to change your eating habits. There are some places were they act like a broken record, EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY, EAT LESS. I guess if they are going to say something twice, it is a helpful reminder. They also offer alternatives to eating foods that will provide more nutrition and keep you fuller longer. Did I metion that the recipes in the back are great! ... Read more
