4-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and Comprehensive
The book is large but set out in a series of straightforward sections: the first one on drugs themselves (under generic names - useful if you're British !) with each entry having a general paragraph on the drug (or group of drugs) but then goes onto talk of how it/they interact with herbs and vitamins whether helpful and unhelpful interactions.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great.
There's a lot of good information in this book but I would not recommend it as a reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Today's Health Consumer
The authors of this book have made a significant contribution to the resources available for today's health consumer. By providing this current, well-organized and useful "guide" they are helping those of ustrying to protect or improve our own health, and those of us facilitatingothers in doing that, tremendously! Their research is thorough and andunbiased - I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it
Ray Kurzweil brings us a fun and fascinating diet with aspect of this book is that it provides a look into the progression of medical research and technology and the amazing possibilities that await us in the not-so-distant future. Grossman and Kurzweil are not speculative visionaries, but have based their projections, including the end of aging and chronic illness, on compelling medical research that has already been done or is currently underway. This book is a fascinating, human, health-based account leading up to the eventual fusion of human life and technology This book is a well written, thoroughly researched presentation of where modern medicine stands now and the exciting directions in which it is headed. For more FREE info check the net
5-0 out of 5 stars A SEMINAL BOOK --Body/Brain & Sex/Stress Guide
This is a seminal book. It's amazing what these authors cover in this jam-packed guide to living longer and possibly living forever. Ray Kurzweil if you don't know him is one of the leading scientist/inventors of our time (the synthesizer & more). You may know him from his popular non-fiction book THE AGE OF SPIRITUAL MACHINES --which talks about how smart machines will be by 2020. What I didn't know was his own health challenges-- diabetic etc. And how he hooked up with Dr. Terry Grossman founder of the forward thinking Frontier MEdical Institute in Colorado-- a leading longevity clinic. The umbrella theory of this book is that there are three bridges that could lead you to possible immortality and they include a) present day therapies --what they call Ray & Terry's Longevity Program -- b)Biotech revolution developments -- that will evolve from such things as genetic and protein codes and of how to turn off disease and aging and reach human potential c) Nanotechnology--AI (intelligence revolution) --new tech that will enable us (or those who can afford it at least) the ability to rebuild their bodies and brains eve at the molecular level.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Triumph of Hope over Evidence
I bought this book because the authors are very interesting and unusual people.Ray Kurzweil is one of few genuine geniuses of modern technology, and Dr. Grossman seems a very engaged and knowledgeable physician with a prevention-based practise, which I applaud.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date and Not Evidence Based
This book was published in 1995 (so of course was written in about 1993-94) so its information is very out of date. Since that time technology has introduced the BMD bone density scan, and the pharmaceutical industry has developed and promoted the use of bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Evista. These two developments alone have rendered this book totally out of date and therefore not useful, in my opinion. Also, the information is not evidence-based, most of his recommendations are based on anecdotal and observed results, rather than on scientific studies. What he has to say is interesting, sometimes even fascinating, but is it accurate? For example, his recommendations on caffeine are based on the result of an "experiment" of giving three cups of coffee to five women. I don't consider that evidence-based medical protocol.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
This book is excellent and has surpassed my expectations of information, not only on osteoporosis, but many other aspects of health care.In fact, I am so pleased with it that I have bought a total of 4 copies, 3 being for my children. Two of them are in health care, and the third will also benefit immensely from the knowledge this book provides. Thank you, Dr. Gaby, for writing this book and sharing your knowledge and research with those of us with osteoporosis, and those who can head off its devastating effects.

3-0 out of 5 stars old copyright but good basics

Many common treatments lack scientific justification, do nothing for you, or put you at risk for unwanted side effects. You can protect yourself from these practices. Hadler offers some information and tools to help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but there are other factors involved in calcification.
This book is the natural complement to "Calcification: the Aging Factor," by Mark Mayer. While these books are on the same subject, they are both very different in content. The Calcium Bomb is about nanobacteria; while "Calcification: the Aging Factor" talks about other factors that can contribute to calcifications.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Calcium Bomb
An interesting read on health but is it fact or fiction?Pretty scary if true as it is not main stream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book
I just finished reading an extraordinary book, The Calcium Bomb: The Nanobacteria Link to Heart Disease and Cancer. It also explains for the first time, the possible etiology and outline for a real treatment of my own ailment (which I know quite a bit about) ankloysing spondylitis. This is a work of excellent investigative scholarship and if its basic premise is true, namely that nanobacteria create calcium shells to protect themselves and can only be killed once they are unsheathed, then it may be one of the most important health books ever written. The relationship between nanobacteria and atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis is portrayed convincingly. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A book for policy planners and not clinicians
This is a book for American policy makers. It is not a book for clinicians so it is not meant for me.It has reconditions for clinicians but these recommendations are probably better made elsewhere by other sources. If you are a clinician in Australia, for example, there are a number of organisations that should be approached individually such as one's college (one's board, in other words), hospital (for ACHS and in-house measures), HIC, and, or course, one's insurer. All of those people will be able tell you exactly what to study.Insurers have money at stake so they are well motivated.I asked a legal officer at my insurer if they could help with quality issues and she said "you're kidding" and paused while I wondered if I had asked a stupid question or offended her.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fresh and innovatrive approach
Insightful, progressive, meaningful, and comprehensive coverage of the field. I learned a lot from the book. Few minor points that can be improved. One, the figures in the book (there are only a few anyway) are vague and don't add much to the content. Two, there are many sentences in the book that are either out of context or they don't convey what the authors have in mind. Third, the book could have benefited from a bibliography. Alphabetical bibliography is easier to use to look the sources up than to struggle to find them in the Notes section at the end of the book. But, overall, a great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars EVOLUTIONARY MEDICINE
Why we get sick is great for explaining evolutionary medicine for first timers. It's great for students, classrooms and anyone interested in Evolutionary medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to a perspective on health you won't get from your doctor
This is a very readable, intelligent introduction to a perspective on medicine that is very useful for those of us who recognize that we have to manage our own medical care.It provides us with a basis for asking questions about the recommendations that doctors make. Those recommendations can be short-sighted.Most medical schools have not provided doctors with a useful evolutionary perspective on disease and medicine. The evolutionary perspective is simple enough for an intelligent lay person to grasp and use and novel enough to give insights that most doctors will not be able to provide.

This book is a must-have for anyone responsible for realistic decision making about his/her ability to provide health care at home, as well as an excellent how-to guide for those who accept the inherent responsibilities of the caregiver. 1-0 out of 5 stars Author paid for his "degree"
He is NOT a doctor. The only degree he has is from a unaccredited CORRESPONDENCE school!!! It was shut down by court order in 2001. He paid $72 for his "degree". He is now involved in Oasis Life Sciences, a MLM selling junk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't argue with results
You can argue all you want about qualifications of Mr. Cherniske. But I will say that my daily caffiene intake was from 600-1100mg a day for years, I quit cold turkey about a month before I started reading the book...and the withdrawal was incredible....headaches, shakes, irritable beyond belief. You can't say this isn't an additive drug while you're slugging down four or more startbucks coffees a day.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe I bought It. Now I'm feeling blue.
This book is so long and boring I needed caffeine to keep me awake. You definitely don't need to go through 400 pages just to come up with the same conclusion. He uses researchers who do not have nor will have soon hard evidences that there is something more than higher risk for this or even that it can happen to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book has been my constant companion in the month leading up to and now the week since surgery.I went into surgery completely at ease, largely thanks to the "walk-through" of what to expect on the day of surgery that's contained in this book. And after surgery, the recovery information and tips are helping everyday!I highly recommend this book, if you are facing surgery or need help making the choice that's right for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good reference book
I ordered this book a week before my hysterectomy and didn't get it until afterward, but I still found it very helpful. Great detail on preparing for surgery and what to expect the day of and the week after. The chapter about the pros/cons of keeping your cervix interested me because my doctors had opposing opinions. The last chapter contains comments from patients and husbands that I found revealing and reassuring. At 6 weeks past surgery, I'm still referring to the book. I recommended this book and The Woman's Guide to Hysterectomy to my gynecologist. Both are comprehensive and informative; this book is slightly more "readable."

4-0 out of 5 stars A great guide!
I bought this guide post surgery since the prodedure was my only option for my particular problem, but it was still very helpful. It answered alot of my questions about hormones, recovery etc.It covers alot about the surgery and the various types.I also like that the author just tells like it is, and covers all subjects candidly.
