5-0 out of 5 stars A concise and accessible introduction to available US health care
Department of Health Policy Management Professor Leiyu Shi and School of Public and Environmental Affairs Associate Professor Douglas Singh present Essentials of the US Health Care System, a concise and accessible introduction to available US health care. Written as a textbook especially for students considering a profession in the field, yet also accessible to lay readers, Essentials of the US Health Care System includes basic information concerning the effects of modern medical technology, the roles of different providers and professionals in US health care, managed care and health networks, long-term care services, and much more. Graphs, charts, and black-and- white photographs round out this excellent primer of basic terms and concepts; each section features a neatly summarized conclusion and a list of references for more information. Also very highly recommended is the author's previous textbook, Delivering Health Care In America: A Systems Approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial Dental Issue
In widespread use since the 1820s, the most commonly used dental filling material is a compound made by mixing copper, tin, silver, zinc, and mercury, commonly called "silver amalgam." The American Dental Association claims amalgam is safe, but the author counters that as the filling corrodes, mercury, which constitutes about 50 percent of the filling material, is slowly released from the filling. Mercury has a strong affinity forbiological tissue and, released from the filling material, forms methyl mercury in the body. The author explains that sufficient toxic material is released from amalgams to cause emotional disturbances, birth defects, autoimmune diseases, and a host of other ailments whose etiology is considered to be mysterious, or unknown, by conventional medical practitioners and dentists. Gold filling material is preferable to amalgam, but the gold's purity is important because other metals, especially copper which is alloyed with gold to make it sufficiently durable, may create toxicity for some patients. Compounding the problem for dental patients is the fact that most dental manufacturers are reluctant to reveal the contents of their products (most patients never ask), and the Centers for Disease Control avoids the issue by endorsing dentistry as a self-policing profession with high ethical standards which is not responsible to the CDC, but only to itself. This well-written book may provide clues to many people's unexplained health problems. Highly recommended! I'd also recommend "The Complete Book of Dental Remedies" by Flora Parsa Stay, DDS, which is a comprehensive coverage of dental problems and prevention using homeopathy, nutritional supplements, and conventional dental care.
5-0 out of 5 stars must read if MERCURY is on your mind OR in your head!!
we slowly are learning more about the hazzards of MERCURY in our bodies. sure, we now stay away from mercury infested fish--but what about the gov. is not talking about ("truth"-not in their vocaulary) is the mercury in our vaccines--NO they are NOT safe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dental revision - read about the whole picture
This book was essential in my understanding of why I needed to remove all mercury from my mouth. It is the classic.I want to add that Hal Huggins' book on MS is an excellent complement because it is based on newer information Huggins has amassed, and describes the healing process very well.By writing about MS I am concerned that the rest of us who need to understand how to heal from mercury won't buy it.I highly recommend reading both books to fully grasp why and how. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Book You Need
I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply and equipment business. I would with a number of physician groups. I agree with the previous reviewer that this is an essential book for all medical service providers in private practice. So many physician groups fail to collect all the fees they can because they don't have a full understanding of proper coding and billing. And, many lawsuits could be avoided and/or minimized with proper documentation. And, of coure, as any medical malpractice attorney will tell you, the best way to avoid getting sued in the first place is to communicate, clearly and frequently, with your patients. This is the kind of information they don't teach in medical school but every physician needs to know. Successful medical practices today require so much more than just quality medical care. This books helps you figure out how to do all the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Practice
Buppert's new book is truly exceptional. She weaves together the changing worlds of health care, business, law, research, and academia in a very practical way.She has created an irreplaceable resource for any and allof you nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician's assistants whodesire to strengthen your primary care practice, or to develop a practicefrom scratch.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Risk Shift
In his ethnography (PDF) of Grover Norquist's weekly breakfast meetings, Thomas Medved tells us how Newt Gingrich sold reluctant conservatives attending the meeting on Medicare reform. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start!
Hacker reports on a broad-based risk-shift from society to individuals - across healthcare, pensions, and job security. The shift has been obscured for many by its slow movement across several stages. For example, pensions have been trending from defined-benefit to defined-contribution to 401(k) - each leaving more risk and less benefit to employees.Similarly, in healthcare we are moving from employer-provided full coverage to higher deductibles, co-pays, and exclusions to employee-provided HSAs.As for job security, those starting new careers are less and less likely to finish with the same employer, or even in the same industry - thanks to intensifying foreign competition.Meanwhile, leaders of our federal government are trying to weaken government programs providing pension (Social Security), healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid), and job security (unemployment insurance).
5-0 out of 5 stars Collectivism is no panacea
This is an important book, because it brings to light a very important sociologic/economic trend. I found the section on job volatility very pertinent (I'm a programmer). My only caveat is that many collectivist/socialist countries have problems equal to or worse than ours. Some of them are even trying to emulate us and add more capitalistic elements into their societies. (I grew up in England and am familiar with the problems in France and Germany). I guess that's why economics is called the "Dismal Science". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book!!
I absolutely without a doubt hate this book.It is a required book for a course that I am taking. It uses way to many initials instead of writing the complete name of each organization, so unless you have one heck of a memory you arn't sure which organization that those initials stand for.It is a very hard book to sit down and read because it is way to boring, the authors go on and on about about the topics instead of presenting the topics in a clear straight forward way.The questions at the end of each chapter are mostly based on your opinion, so you are never quite sure if your answer is correct or not.I can't wait till this class is over so that I never have to read this book again!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars fast service book not in condition described

3-0 out of 5 stars A VARY GOOD BOOK
The book is vary good, BUT it depends on changing your lifestyle, and changing the way you eat. Which is VARY GOOD, eating more fresh vegetables& fruit, cutting down on the meat (colestrol). It takes a little bit of getting used to and it is the only thing that will get you back into shape.BUT IT IS WORTH THE TROUBLE. The book "The Hippocrates Diet" by Ann Wigmore, and "The New York Times Natural Foods Cookbook" are the best combo of books to let your body back to doing what GOD made it to do, That is to get well and stay well. I HAVE NOT used the Urine Therapy, so I can't say wheather it works or not. A person should not knock something they have not tried. It may be JUST WHAT YOU NEED for your ailment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and enlightening
It works people. You just have to do it safely. For women, mid stream, build up slowly to 1 glass a day.Do it in the early morning as that is the most nutritional of the day. It is antiseptic for a max of 15 minutes and then it is the opposite. It is tasteless if your diet is excellent. If you eat a highly processed diet you will taste the chemicals in those foods and it will taste horrid. My diet is healthy so it doesn't have any taste at all.If you try it and it seems salty well there is your diet again telling you something. I've used it to heal wounds on my hands when nothing else was helping. The prime minister of India who was known for this habit lived well into his 90's and had no maladies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Urinetastic
Theory is important, as is history, but let's be honest - practice is where it's at. And I found the recipe section to be sorely lacking. The crab bisque with piss is lovely, but come on - how about detailing some other soups. I guess you can technically augment any soup with your whizz, but some work better than others (cream of tomato? ick!), and if the authors already know this, they could certainly have saved us some time. My family refuses to taste-test my little soup experiments for whatever reason, so I bet I've spent a month now trying all the different variations. And how about the cocktail section? The piss n' tonic is pretty standard and not that hard to figure out by oneself. Why waste ink on that when we might have gotten into some more complicated and festive summer punches and fizzes? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort overall. I just hope somebody will put a bit of effort into the various ways to entertain with piss and to more palatably enjoy it oneself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opener
As a physician, John Abramson explains his experience and his research on the subject of pharmecuticals, using good medical and common sense, along with professionalism to investigate the overuse of prescription drugs. There are methods that should be followed for approval of drugs which aren't always followed; drugs are partially tested, information is slanted to cut time, laziness and time constraints contribute, faulty and partial information, all weave their way into the story of how the dangerous overuse of drugs harm consumers. Many doctors trust the medical journals for accuracy and current information on prescription drugs. Unfortunatly the journals get caught in the web of bad information by not verifying their sources. This book offers the medical field and patients in an eye-opening read on the real story behind the overuse of certain popular drugs and the process that goes on behind the scenes - along with a hint that once again, corporate America's greed stands to gain at the cost of the uninformed consumer. His daunting task to untangle this web and make it readable to a wide audience is well done.I'm appreciative for people such as John Abramson for taking the time and efforts to inform the public.

4-0 out of 5 stars There will be no solution to the health care crisis until we understand the foundation of the problem.
The lengthy title of this book sums up the question of "why are Americans, whose health is at the bottom of the developed nations, are paying so much more for that distinction?" Read this book. It will tell you why. There will be no solution to the health care crisis until we understand the foundation of the problem, and Dr. Abramson clearly explains why and how the current system benefits corporate profits, but not much else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!
This book wouldn't be so frightening if I didn't believe all of it was true. You know how it is when you buy a new car and then you see that car everywhere?Just in the last couple days while reading this book there have been a couple of newspaper articles about medical researchers being paid thousands of dollars by big pharma when working on drugs that they are in charge of approving or rejecting. It makes you look at the medications you might be taking in a whole different and more critical way.Everyone should read this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A little Frustrating
Ok, the first half of this book does nothing more than talk about purchasing some DNA activation kit and joining the authors home base of practitioners.Similar to the "cures they do not want you to know about" scam.I will say that there is some good information in this book, but would not understand that had I not known about other holistic healing modalities that describe the same things. This book appears to be a trademark promotion based on several other holistic philosophies.More power to you if you can do it... but the author is going to have to come up with some original material. This book didn't offer me anything I haven't read about or experienced before.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Choice
Having become interested in metaphysical advancement, I stumbled across the interesting concept of DNA Activation. Thus I began my search for resources that could help me do this, and my search led me to this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Vianna Stibal Missing?
after reading the book I've just got to ask, how come the Medical Intuitive, Vianna, who started this healing technique not mentioned at all? but I did give it a 3 in case I missed that somewhere in the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Title misleading, Advice is quite biased
I was hoping that this book would seek to represent the risks and advantages in an unbiased way but alas it is clearly situated in the anti-vaccination camp. The author's background and conclusions reveal an interest in promoting alternative and natural medicine, which is not wrong, just be aware of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently researched
Romm has thoroughly researched this guide to vaccinations, referencing hundreds of studies from peer-review journals published around the world. An excellent, non-hysterical, honest interrogation of vaccine history, adverse effects from vaccines, disease risks, and practical home remedies for many of the diseases discussed. A must have for your health/parenting library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful and Unbiased.
This is one of the books I used to help me decide whether or not we should vaccinate our children. I got this book when it first came out and I was expecting it to be very biased towards not vaccinating, but it's actually quite good and is not biased either way. She basically details all the illnesses that we vaccinate for and then describes the vaccines and how effective they are. It was quite an education. When I was initially researching whether or not to vaccinate I found that most books were either pro or against with nothing in between. This book was like a breath of fresh air in that regard. The Stephanie Cave book is also excellent. Between the two of them I found I was able to make an educated decision about what was best for our family (we decided to selectively vax.) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Very Interesting, but "Buyer Beware"
I am currently reading quite a few books on the subject of Hypothyroidism, after learning that I have a strong family history of it. Everytime I go to the doctor and complain of fatigue and weakness, they say, "let's check your thyroid" and all the blood workalways comes back normal. 5-0 out of 5 stars An enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide
The collaborative effort of Caroline Myss and Dr. Norm Shealy, The Science Of Medical Intuition: Self-diagnosis And Healing With Your Body's Energy Systems is an impressive and "user friendly" collection of twelve 60 minute lessons on audio compact discs that guide the listener in the process of approaching self-care and improved health through developing personal intuition. Inducting the reader into learning about chakras, creative visualization, guided imagery, the power of thought, and much, much more, The Science Of Medical Intuition is an enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide to extending personal awareness into scientific and metaphysical realms alike. The Science Of Medical Intuition would make a welcome and highly prized addition to dedicated Alternative Medicine and Metaphysical Studies collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth getting if you relate to Caroline Myss.
This is the most involved CD and Workbook set from Caroline that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It is a very detailed tool box, and one that will provide hours of opportunity for self-reflection and awareness. Caroline Myss and Norman Shealy (MD) speak on the CD's. Dr Norm Shealy has some fascinating medical details concerning the visualisations contained within this series and their effect on raising the levels of Calcitonin and DHEA (as well as some other hormones) for example.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite my cup of tea.
I like the concept of making weight loss more of a spiritual journey, but Chumley's religious approach is a little more than I can accept.I think if you are really at rock bottom regarding your weight, or if you are quite religious to start with, this book is more likely to be helpful to you.On the plus side, it is simple to understand, concise and well-written.Not a bad read, and has some helpful bits even if you're unable to accept the entire book as a new way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give God the Glory
This is a great book, easy reading, inspiring, and motivational. You can't ask for a better way to lose weight than with God. It's so great, in fact, that a friend and I have started a group at yahoogroups, based on the book...

3-0 out of 5 stars Scientifically based approach to health maintenance and disease prevention
Mark Hyman, in his book: Ultraprevention: The 6-Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life, discuss' what he calls, 'an emerging model of medicine'. This 'emerging' model of medicine focuses on healthcare, not disease care. Dr. Hyman, rather than seeking to fix the broken parts -- or prescribe a pill for every ill, as he says, promotes a vital, disease-free life. Dr. Hyman explains the five basic forces of illness:

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas presented by a fruitcake.
Firstly, I do agree that most people do not get sufficient water during the day.Drinking more water, and being hydrated, is a good thing and does help with a number of issues. However, this doctor is saying that water can cure you of a number of diseases that it just won't.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this Book!
This book has remarkable research and amazing spiritual confirmation for the channeled information that I received about water. Since incorporating the wisdom from this book and Dr. B's many other books of which I have many of them and have read them all, and also through the messages I received confirming these messages through Dr. B's books, I have lost two dress sizes, 2 shoe sizes all without even trying! I have also incorporated Dr. B's books, along with my own research, and spiritual messages into a new book I just published ~ Stepping Into Spiritual Oneness available at [...] and here on amazon within the next few weeks. As a fellow doctor, author of two books myself, I surely have enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it!:) It is the fountain of youth that we all have been looking for; a fountain of youth that is free from being found within an age-defying cream or diet pills, but through what we are made of ~ Water!
