5-0 out of 5 stars A prescription for a better medical care system as well as for us
Denial of Aging is both a call to arms and a personal guide. It connects two themes: 1) most of us will become infirm eventually; 2) when that happens, our medical care system will fail us, often worsening quality of life instead of improving it.Two kinds of failures are Medicare rules that favor institutional care over care at home, and a fixation on (expensive) high tech treatments that have a low chance of success in the infirm elderly, but that carry a high rate of complications.Dr. Gillick shows that we can avoid some of these problems through individual choices, but that others require concerted political action -- for instance, making Medicare more responsive to the needs of the infirm elderly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on aging...Must read for boomers, MDs,RNs, and anyone growing old...
Whether you are a boomer about to face aging or a clinician advising patients, you will age more gracefully by reading this extremely readable and well-written book by one of this country's foremost geriatricians. As in her other books, Muriel Gillick makes the stories come alive in technicolor, which is no easy task when nursing home and senility are the subject matter. And that's exactly the point: Dr. Gillick breaks the aging stereotypes that most of us conjure when thinking about aging. Whether it's preventive medicine, health policy, or just what stance one should have towards growing old, you will walk away with a more informed and humane understanding of what aging means and how we can all live our life's final few chapters gracefully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rebuilt.. review
As a cochlear implantee ( I also have an Bionic Ear from Advanced Bionics) I highly recommend this book for any one with a cochlear implant, any candidate, or just anyone who is interested in how this amazing technology has had impact on those of us that either suddenly or over a period of time, became deaf. Michael combines a lot of technological information, along with the emotional journey we CI users go through. His description of becoming cyborg and what that means describes how technology today can have an effect on humans. M ichael is a brilant writer with an engaging style. At times this is not an 'easy read" because of the many references to technology, and his use of a sophisticated vocabulary.. but over all, it adds to the other books that describe the cochlear implant journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and unique book
I enjoyed reading this book. It gives a unique insight into what it is like to use a prosthetic sensory device. Chorost has done a great job of describing the odd sound sensations that he experienced as he learned to use the implant. Since he had spent many years hearing with the aid of amplifiers, he can describe the artificial hearing in terms of sounds that a hearing person can relate to.
5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine
Author Michael Chrost become a cyborg in 2001, when his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing, he became completely deaf in his thirties - and chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing. Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human provides an intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine as a result of silicon and flesh joining, resulting in newfound social issues and ethical concerns.

2-0 out of 5 stars One reason why the pharma industry is tanking...
---5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for any pharmaceutical product manager
well John lidstone has done a recommeddable job in the book. The Methodology is to the point and The process is implementable in any type of Therapy/Product.This book serves as a Ready reference for any marketting plann where we need to BE RIGHT for sucess of the Brand.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's actually more general than specific to Pharmaceuticals
This book is an elegant and agreeable summary of Kotler's marketing management and Porter's competitive strategy. This is half of what I was expecting. However I was also expecting that these broad marketing conceptswould be adapted and tailored to the specifics of The PharmaceuticalIndustry. Unfortunately and unlike what is suggested by the title, the bookhas the rhetoric and the feel of a general marketing textbook rather than aPharmaceutical oriented manual. At a macro level the words"product" or "person-to-person" are far more commonthan "drug" or "sales representative-to physician". Ata micro level the book also favors generalities instead of importantPharmaceutical details. For instance, in the Chapter about Communications(8) the authors extensively discuss the elements of the promotional mix andthe relationships with an advertising agency (something important for anyindustry). However, even in that chapter's section about otherconsiderations, they totally ignore the interaction with regulatoryagencies such as the FDA's Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising andCommunications. This, as any Product Manager in Pharmaceuticals knows, iscrucial for the success of the promotional message. Another similar examplecan be found in the Chapter about Sales Strategy (7). In here generalmanagement consulting matrixes (of the BCG 2X2 type common to any industry)are discussed in detail but the actual industry-specific strategy issues, such as sales force rotation and segmentation of calls to health careprofessionals, are avoid. Finally I believe that the price of the book ... is meant to be elitist so that is bought only by top management(the potential clients of the authors which are consultants). This is apity because despite its flaws the books present handy general marketinginformation in an easy-to-read, friendly format, that emphasizes tables andbullet lists rather than extensive text. It will be useful fornon-marketing Pharmaceutical Industry Professionals that interact withMarketing and by Product Managers with no academic business background. Forthose PM out of business school the book is too basic and contains arelatively small amount of data pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry.Such data can be found elsewhere. For instance the 27 pages of Chapter 2(marketing Pharmaceuticals) of Schweitzer's book on Pharmaceuticaleconomics and policy contain much more data than this entire Pharmaceuticalmarketing planning book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Practice, practice and more practice
I got this quite a while ago and was very excited about doing the tape. But while I was excited initially and actually felt good I stopped doing them because I got busy with a project at work and never really went backto it.I was cleaning out my tape library and came across the tape.Istarted doing the exercises and realized just how good they were and justhow out of shape I was. Some of the exercises are not easy but she does awonderful job of explaining how to do them and what you can do asalternatives as you develop your technique. She seems the ever patientteacher as she calmly moves you along to better breathing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying these exercises really makes a difference!
As a vocalist, using these exercises has helped me immensely already (after only just finishing the 6th lesson!) This is my second time around with them, (did six years ago to help develop diaphram).I'm going topractice regularly so as not to get "rusty" again.Wish I couldget in hardcover. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the top 10 books on breathing exercises.
Nancy is a singing teacher. They MUST know how to improve the breathing though some are better at it then others. I believe Nancy is one of the best. She gave me good insights and accelerated my understanding of the strengthening of the voice for singing and speaking. I would have preferred more information aboout breathing's relationship to health and longevity but this book is a must for the serious student of the breath (or life). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough unbiased account of vaccinations
This book details the studies on each major vaccination. I would recommend this book to every parent and international traveler prior to receiving any vaccinations.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and eye opening!
My pediatrician recommended this book to me. I have a scientific and pharmaceutical background and I thought this would be another one of those dumbed down books for parents who want a quick answer. Instead I found a fair review of vaccination, including the history and politics surrounding this controversial issue, and a detailed description of each vaccine and of possible adverse reactions. In my opinion this book is well-written and data is presented in intentionally fair manner. I also like that it is not just an examination of vaccination, but also a very practical guide for new parents like myself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Found it to be pretty objective
After spending the night at the ER pediatrics unit due to my baby having a reaction from the dtap shot (the hospital concluded), I decided to read up on shots.I can't believe I was so good at researching things except for the immunizations prior to giving birth to my first baby. After reading this book, I felt a lot more comfortable in my decision I made and I was so confused before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resouce
I liked this book because it actually gave you specific steps to take to decrease and avoid getting migraine headaches.
5-0 out of 5 stars Migraneurs, do yourself a huge favor and read this book!
This book ("Breaking The Headache Cycle") is superbly-edited, very well-written, and immensely helpful to anyone looking for relief from migraine. I've read about ten or so books on this subject; this is by far the best one. Another book ("The 1-2-3 Program" by Dr. Bucholz, I believe) is pretty good, but it's a distant-second when compared to this book by Dr. Livingstone and Ms. Novak. So, fellow-migraneurs, do yourselves a huge favor and get hold of this book! The authors are migraneurs themselves, thus making them uniquely-qualified to provide the insider's guide on this subject; and they give you information and help you can trust.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ending the Pain Cycle
Dr. Livingstone and Donna Novak are the first modern interpreters of migraine to understand and treat migraine as a full-body nerve storm, not a discrete local phenomenon. As a result, their treatment plan is both specific and holistic.A large part of the authors' emphasis is on enhancing the migraine sufferer's ability to identify and control the triggers that stimulate migraine.Their easy-to-use suggestions can be done at home. This is the first treatment program that has successfully stopped my multi-year headache cycle, and I highly recommend it to everyone caught in the snare of migraine. ... Editorial Review

"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every person who can read should read this book!
The Promise of Sleep should be a number one bestseller, worldwide. It is one of those books that has a long-lasting impact on one's life. Much in this book benefits those without sleep disorders as well. We owe Dr. Dement our gratitude for providing this valuable information. Thank you, Dr. Dement!
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source of info for some people
"The Promise of Sleep" is theeminent Dr. Dement's magnum opus for the masses. It contains more information than most of us will ever want to know about sleep. It is a long and intricate book, and it reads like a grant proposal. Most of us will read the sections that apply to us, and will use the book as a reference.I didn't read the whole thing and neither did any of you. So if you plan to read the whole thing... you are dreaming. But I find myself returning to this book repeatedly, for various health-related reasons. Here I discuss the people I think will benefit from this book, and why. Then I discuss what I believe to be Dr. Dement's biases, for better or worse. Finally, I discuss some other books which you might consider in addition to, or instead of, this one.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a sleeper
4+ months after ordering this book in a fit of insomnia, I finally finished it.This thorough treatise covered so much that if often put me to sleep. The book contains a lot of great information if you can stay with it too the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book saved my son from further damage.
My son had so many of the problems and symptoms that Judy's son had early on.Before reading her book, I recognized, on pure instinct only, that the vaccines were harming him, as he became worse and worse after each series. And just like Judy's doctors, our doctor was dismissive and arrogant which drove me to do my own exhaustive research to heal my son.For those whose children have been similarly harmed and want to stop vaccinating, read Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins by Thomas E. Levy for a better understanding of how to protect against infectious disease.

Billions of pills are swallowed every year in the U.S., and billions more are consumed worldwide. Yet, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and physicians downplay the risk. Many consumers, oblivious to the real danger, risk their lives each and every day by taking 2, 3, 4, or more drugs with potentially deadly consequences.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book was recommended to me by a nurse.I was having terrible side effects to cholesterol medication, and my doctor kept urging me to stay on it, despite the side effects. This book informed me that these side effects were nothing to mess with, and could cause serious harm to my liver and kidneys.I just hope I didn't find out too late.I use people to use this, when a doctor gives you a new drug, or one that doesn't agree with you.I really believe if I hadn't stopped the zocor when I did, I'd be dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Examination of Drug Use
This is an important book for anyone who takes prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs or herbals. The first part examines the relationship between drug companies and the FDA, which has changed significantly since the early 1990's.Much of the funding for new drug review now comes from the drug manufacturers. The approval process is faster and testing time shorter. The author details how the public increasingly plays a role in "testing" in the form of "post-marketing surveillance" and that the adverse drug reactions encountered are under reported.Marketing includes massive distribution of "free sample" to physicians, many of whom may not be familiar with precautions -- and hence do not alert patients to warning signs and symptoms. Also, advertising of prescription medications has increased greatly in the last few years, which has greatly increased drug use and pressure on physicians to prescribe medications.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Surprised!
I bought this book not knowing fully what it was all about.I was very surprised to discover that my 3rd grade daughter has been doing these exercies since kidnergarten, just under a different name - Brain Gym.Many exercises are the same, they just have different names such as cross crawl, brain buttons, turning our listening ears on, etc. They have definetly helped her in school. Her teachers have taught them to her, so I am excited to learn the exercises too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource of healing and hope
Thanks to Donna Eden and David Feinstein for writing this resource of hope and healing.Through information about auras, meridians, chakras and other energy systems written in this book, an individual can learn how pain, illness, depression and lackluster occur.Donna then provides detailed descriptions of "energy fixing" exercises and information that can help one to balance energies for optimal physical health and well being, pain management and vitality.
