5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
This book provides really good insights into children with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. Recommended to me by a school social worker, and I understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful and practical
As a parent of a child diagnosed PDD-NOS, I was elated to find this book.I like the fact that it groups the Asperger's kids with the High Functioning Autistic kids, because in my experience, the two groups do have so much in common (and diagnoses can be somewhat subjective). The book is very well-written and has a positive outlook.I have found myself rereading parts, underlining, taking notes -- it is a great resource and has given me some terrific new ideas and insight into how I can better parent my son and encourage him to be the best he can be and live the fullest life he can.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide
As a high school teacher with several special education students in my classes, I found this book to be extremely informative. Written in plain language rather than a medical text, it helped me to understand better the problems these students face. The book contains numerous suggestions for activities and techniques that I have tried and they were very effective. I strongly recommend this book for any teacher (and parent)who deals with special needs children.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Special Enough
A cursory examination of a number of relatively mild disorders along with a few paragraphs about general instructional methods for each. For a book touting itself as "how the brain works" it contains an embarrassingly basic discussion of brain function, consistent with a high school anatomy and physiology textbook. The chapter on autism, while (finally)addressing a true "special need" would only be new information to a complete neophyte. This book is a disappointment. The title is the only weighty thing about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Parents as well as Educators

5-0 out of 5 stars A very detailed report on specific educational interventions
This book is based on a report of research conducted by a committee of select members from the National Academies. While it does appear quite techincal, it provides a good resource for anyone attempting to put toghether a good educational program for their autistic child. It's a must have book for knowing what needs to, and can be, put into a child's IEP.If you are using an attorney or advocate to put together your child's IEP, make sure they have a copy of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the book your school district has - you need it too!
Although I do not necessarily agree with EVERYTHING that is written in this book, I do appreciate the way it was put together and the information shared. 5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and arresting analysis of interventions
My contact with autistic children and teenagers is primarily through research into social skills teaching.I have a assembled a small library of key texts and until I read this one, I found my library incomplete in one area - a review of intervention programmes. This book is simply superb is its coverage of the various principles that inform current interventions, its analysis of the outcomes of several commonly cited progrmmes, and the scope for future work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for parents of ADHD kids!
Somebody at a CHADD meeting suggested that I read this book.I am happy that I did!It is so well written that I couldn't put it down.I read it in one evening. It gives many practical strategies. But the best feature is that it views ADHD as a gift that should "be utilized, not repressed!"I can't recommend this book more highly.Get it.You'll be happy that you did!

This book is a godsend for clinicians, bipolar children, and their families. It includes every important experience, concern, quest, and resource I have ever come across in my practice full of many bipolar children and their families.
5-0 out of 5 stars A sympathetic voice
I thought I was alone in dealing with my daughter's situation.Absolutely no one in my community understood what I was going through, and blamed me for her behavior.I feel more in control, now that I've read this book. The author shares stories from others who have endured experiences similar to my own.She describes the physical condition behind Biopolar disorder in laymen's terms. Then, she gives practical sugggestions for dealing with the situation. The book is a quick-read--something you will appreciate if you need to help yourself FAST.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide for parents and professionals
Overcoming Autism was given to me by a professional that I work with. She, like myself, has a nephew diagnosed with autism. Her nephew was recently diagnosed at age three and she found this book both personally and professionally helpful.(We are both relatively new to working with children with autism.) I only wish that my family had this book so many years ago when my nephew was diagnosed. Yes, this is an excellent book for parents and professionals. The authors Koegel and LaZebnik discussed many topics that apply to everyday living from toilet training, communication, sleep, finding appropriate school placements and the list can go on and on.I found the authors to be knowledgeable regarding the issues that families face each day when a member has autism. As a member of the Child Study Team I sometimes meet parents who are not knowledgeable with early intervention programs. This book does an excellent job explaining early interventions and the various programs that a child with autism may need to be successful. Each chapter begins with at least a few questions that families frequently ask regarding the issues that they face. Each answer is practical and realistic. In addition, Koegel and LaZebnik give practical suggestions on handling psychological issues such as guilty, denial, blame, anger, etc., as well as guidance and recommendations to getting on track to help your child achieve success. The authors discuss the treatment programs that are available and the research behind those programs. They also stressed to parent to be leery of those programs that cost too much and promise the world.I found the authors to be practical in their approach and the tone of the book supportive and compassionate. They truly offer realistic hope to parents that they can have a rewarding and enjoyable relationship with their child with autism.Overcoming Autism is a practical guide for families and professionals to help children with autism achieve success and find their place in society.Ann Z.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
I have had this book from the very beginning, even before my son was diagnosed and I have to say, this is the book that helped me to recognize, accept and feel positive about my son having this disorder.I was in denial for awhile about his behavior, thinking it couldn't be autism because he didn't behave like "Rainman".When I picked up this book on a whim, I saw that all people with autism are not the same, do not have all of the symptoms and actually have a hope for a bright future.Dr. Koegel is very human and comforting, but doesn't coddle you.She makes you wish that all the support staff you deal with could have a fraction of her knowledge and compassion-she doesn't ever give up on a child. The book goes back and forth between the Dr. and commentary from a mother, who I can absolutely identify with--she is so very honest.I later found an article in The Autism Perspective Magazine written by her son (now a preteen) and I was so impressed. This is a book that I have passed on to friends with children who may be on the spectrum and also my son's teacher. Please read it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read answers for parents
I have done a ton of reading on ASDs since my son was diagnosed 2 years ago.I wish I had read this book two years ago!It is full of hope and sound advice based on research.I definitely came away feeling like I could use everyday, no cost experiences to teach my son and enrich his quality of life (which is very different from a lot of books out there that suggest expensive therapies, diets, supplements, etc. are the only way to help your child). The authors mix research with personal accounts which is very helpful.I would strongly recommend this book for any parent, childcare giver or person who is interested in helping a child with an ASD reach their potential. There is HOPE!YOU can make a difference in the life of the child you cherish. The challenges you see today, will not be here forever if you are willing to put in the hard work, perserverance, and most importantly love, needed to help.I would strongly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for church library
I am a Lutheran Church librarian in Florida who bought this book for our church library. It stresses that though we may have different traits and characteristics we are all worthy of love, respect and human dignity. It discusses a mentally-challenged little boy and how he can be a good playmate even though he is a little slow.So what?He is still a persdon worthy of dignity and acceptance. This book stresses kindness on a personal level and a live-and-let-live attitude. This is a vital life lesson for our children to learn early on, and is a great conversation starter. This book will help cut down on bullying, marginalization and dehumanization of the mentally and physically challenged among us.After all, who among us doesnot have some sort of shortcoming?Children need to know that perfection is an impossibility and so they should expect people to do the best job they can but not expect perfection in themselves or others. The illustrations appear to be done in pastels and are very attractive.Great Job, Maria!Keep them coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Wrong With Timmy?
Just as with What's Heaven, this story has Kate as well.I think every parent that has a child with special needs would hope that friendship and acceptance would come as quickly to them as it does to Timmy in What's Wrong With Timmy?
2-0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with the author?
This book is a real nightmare for children with disabilities. Maria Shriver does attempt to impart the message that nothing is wrong at all- unfortunately, she's already planted the seed in the young minds of her readers with the mere title of the book. She then spends an exhaustive twenty pages trying to be sure she'd convinced them of it.I'd recommend "Russ and the Almost Perfect Day" by Janet Elizabeth Rickert instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of Celiac Kids!!!
Like most parents, we were pretty shell-shocked by my 5 yr old son's diagnosis.I spent hours on the Internet researching Celiac Disease.Problem was, most of the information was geared towards adults. My initial response was less concerned with what he could eat and more concerned with how am I going to make sure he feels "normal"?What will I pack for lunch at school? How can I send him to school without something happening? How will I deal with the 5 birthday parties he has in the next month?Danna Korn's book answered all of those questions and the other 1000 I forgot to think of.This book is a life saver. My son started Kindergarten 3 days ago and I feel like all is well.I read it cover to cover in one night. As parents of celiac kids, we are not alone.Danna Korn helps you see that.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Treatment of CP
What an excellent new resource this author has provided us with! This book is very well organized and thoughtfully researched to provide the most updated information and answers to parents most burning questions as well as give ideas and advice to parents and professionals. Most books focus heavily on the difference between normal motor development (some of which children with CP will not be able to achieve) and the motor and muscle abnormalities of children with CP but are usually not as positive as this one. I especially enjoyed the optimism with which this book was written and the guidelines it gave for reaching realistic goals. It was niceto see a discussion of newer treatments such as SDR and ITB Therapies as well. Destined to become a classic work!

3-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD
This book is a very good "first book" to start with if you are researching how to help your child. It is written in simple terms that parents can understand. It gives helpful tips on setting up your child's environment in order to help them be more successful.I have read many books on this subject, and this is a staple book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ADD/ADHD Checklist
This is an excellent, reader-friendly guide to ADD/ADHD.It is useful for parents and teachers alike, an it allows the reader to get answers to their questions quickly by simply looking through the detailed subject index totheir specific issue.Topics like medication alternatives, specificapproaches for parents, educational guidelines, and teaching strategies arebut a few of the topics covered in this book.As an educator withexperience dealing with ADHD children, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent friendly, excellent parenting guidelines
I picked up this book in order to research ADD/ADHD in response to my child's teachers suggestions that he may be such a child. This book is written in such clear terms that it de-mystifies this all enveloping area.It contains simple to follow checklists. But it's best feature for parentsare the numerous suggestions for supporting your child at home and atschool. I felt enpowered by it to gain help for my child who is possiblyborderline ADD, but to me seems like a regular boy who does not likeputting much effort into school work and resents homework. The label ADD isfrightening, but by no means suggests that your child should be medicated. This book supported my search for alternatives. ... Read more

It's a handle book that has many different topics to help your child or student.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I found this book to be very helpful in working with students both individually and in groups.I used the activities for students ages K-5.Everyone enjoyed the activities, and the structure of the lessons helped me to guide discussions and have questions prepared to ask even on the busiest of days!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for higher functioning special folks.
I found this book to be extremely helpful for my highly-functioning autistic child. It covers a vast range of situations and involves the student in thinking about solutions and coming up with their own answers.I like it so much that I'm buying one for one of his teachers as well.It is geared to higher functioning students -- others could use this as a framework and simplify things a bit, or try Carol Gray's book "The New Social Story Book" which is written much more simply and directly. It's also an excellent book, but was too simple for my needs. ...
