5-0 out of 5 stars guiding the gifted child
Every time I re-read this book I find it more helpful. It has helped be become a better parent, and has empowered me in the battle against the school establishment. I urge you to read this book even if you only remotely think that your child might be gifted. Understanding what we have to go through has made our family life much easier and less stressful than before.

5-0 out of 5 stars reader
I first read this book in 1989, when my first-born began school. She is now a young adult, has read the book, and thanks me for following the advice. It is timeless. I have since bought 11 more copies, as gifts for friends, as well as re-reading my own copy countless times, as my next 2 children were also identified gifted. I was also fortunate to find a parent group that was based on the topics of the book. It was the most positive and helpful parenting support I ever received.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only parenting book I've read more than once
Yes, this book has a lot of big words in it, but the odds are that if you have a gifted child, you probably were one yourself.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Deficit Disorder
I found this book informative with very current, new ideas.I knew that ADD ran in our family but after reading this book, I realize that there are manifestations of it that I had never considered ADD.Now I realize that even more of us have this condition. We present with diverse symptoms, abilities and coping strategies but according to this book they are caused by the same types of brain problems. That makes very good sense to me.It explains a great deal. I am 63 years old and have known 6 generations of my family from my great grandfather to my grandchildren. There are some with ADD in each generation. What I used to think of as quirks I now realize are ADD traits. This book has allowed me to be gentler on myself and members of my family.I bought 4 copies of this book and am giving them to family members.I hope that they will find this information as helpful as I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Authoritative
The author of this wonderful book combines neuroscience and phychology to help dispel some the myths people have surrounding Attention Deficit Disorder. I could hardly put it down and often found myself lost within the pages for minutes on end. Much better than 'Driven to Distraction' IMO. Damn, what time was that meeting tomorrow? Oh yeah, I actually bought this for a family member who suffers from ADHD, so the doctor says. I'm thinking about buying a copy for everyone in my immediate family and probobly even a few distant cousins I haven't seen in years. Man, I wonder how old Doris is now anyway. Wasn't she the one that was adopted? No, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that was Greg. Doris must have been the one with the irritable bowel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 10 STAR BOOK!
OUTSTANDING BOOK!I recommend this book to EVERYONE interested in the most current information on ADD and ADHD.Dr. Brown uses the term "ADD syndrome" to refer to a cluster of impairments in the management system of the mind. As a femaleadult with ADD and a high school resource specialist, I have experienced the effects of this syndrome both personally and professionally. As an educator who sees the actions of students with ADD frequently misunderstood by their teachers, I believe the information in this book will make a huge difference for students in the classrooms of the teachers who read it; Dr. Brown explains not only how these impairments affect behavior and time management, but more importantly, how they can affect reading, written expression, math, and memory. As a person with ADD, I especially liked his concept of ADD syndrome. Dr. Brown explains the complexity of this syndrome in an easy to read and easy to understand format. This book is for everyone who has been touched by someone with ADD: parents, friends, spouses, siblings, relatives, teachers, doctors, psychologists, and especially, any person who has ADD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on.
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects.I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him.I am a believer.I have a right brained child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher can still learn
Yes, a teacher can still learn - grow - and become even moresuccessful!Thank you Jeffrey Freed for opening my eyes (I already knew there were different ways to reach children, but now I have something to share in writing)! This book has wonderful ideas on how to teach those students who just don't "get" the methods we are using. Is something wrong with these students? No, however, there is something wrong with the way we are teaching!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
While I don't agree with all of the author's ideas, I found the book very interesting and read it quickly. The best thing about the book is that it looks at ADD children in a very positive light and highlights their unique abilities. It is targeted for a certain type of child, however. My daughter fit about 85% of the author's criteria and I found it not only helpful, but hopeful. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Use your own critical faculties!
My son has Down's Syndrome. My friend suggested I look into Doman's program as several people she knew with typical children were big fans. So I bought this book which offers no real practical advice at all but documents the history of Glenn Doman's research and treatment program.Doman claimed to have developed these treatments with his team in the 50's and 60's at which time other treatments for brain damaged children were completely unsuccessful or worsened the child's situation. Reading the book I thought it seemed authentic and the things he was suggesting didn't seem very different from the early intervention strategies that my son was already benefiting from in the state funded program.I thought perhaps Doman was an early pioneer of this now readily accepted treatment.
5-0 out of 5 stars How Could You NOT Do This For Your Brain-Injured Child?
This fantastic book taught me more in 2 days than I've learned elsewhere in 2 years. Finally actual help is out there, not just negativity. This is what I expected to learn from my developmental pediatrician, but didn't.It's wonderful to know there are people in this world who give so selflessly for our children.I loved this one so much I ordered "How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb" & "How to Teach Your Baby to Read"I can't wait to see some real improvement in my daughter!!

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I have a Down's child.I found this book to be very helpful. There was a bit of weeding of the history of the Institute to be done. But, by following the information I was able to create a program to fit our lifestyle. (It helped to read the other books by the author on Reading, Math, Physical Activity and Knowledge.) I read the author's other books first, and I felt that this book was the missing link I needed to create a program for my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book moved me to tears
I came across this book in a local children's hospital resource library. The first page describes a speeding race car with no brakes, and how it might go off the road or even crash.Page two goes on to draw a parellel between this race car, and and explains that having ADHD is a lot like being a race car with no brakes, 'You have a great engine with lots of thinking power, and a good, strong body, but no brakes'.I broke down crying right there in the middle of the library - it was like finally getting inside my child's head and knowing how he feels and why he just doesn't seem to know when to quit.5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Resource for the Parents of ADHD Kids!
One of the most difficult things about parenting an ADHD child is explaining attention deficit disorder to that child. Patricia Quinn and associates have given a powerful resource to these parents - a true gift to empower them. In simple language, illustrated with eye-catching graphics, PUTTING ON THE BRAKES explains not only the nature of this disorder, but also how children and their families can learn to manage it. As an ADD Coach, I find this to be the most important resource that I can put into the hands of parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Putting on the Brakes
A very good book for children with ADHD.It's easy to read and gets to the point, something all ADHD children need.It explains what ADHD is, that others have the same problems, and how it effects their home and school lives. It gives some wonder information about how they can help theirselves.I have read it to both my children with ADHD as well as ADHD children I work with and they all enjoy it, and can relate to it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I think Torey Hayden is a genius novelist!
This book was fantastic. I had only read one of Haydens books previous to this one but you can be assured that I will have to get my hands on her whole collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Miracles can happen for the most hopeless lost causes"
I am also the mother of a "Special Needs" child; I happened to discover "Twilight Children", Torey Hayden's most recent book by chance in a local bookstore. I was spellbound and couldn't put it down, and when I had read that book, I ordered everything else she ever wrote from Amazon (how's that for a recommendation?). This book,(and I say this without exaggeration) literally made me gasp at some parts and cry at some others. This is a book that I feel would be of value to parents of special needs children, but also to members of Alcoholics Anonymous, or anyone who believes (or wants to believe) that miracles can still happen to the most hopeless of "lost causes".

4-0 out of 5 stars just another kid
In this book, Torey Hayden teaches a challenging class for emotionally disturbed children consisting of Shamie, Geraldine and Shemona, three refugees from Northern Ireland, one of whom (Shemona) is an elective mute; Dirkie, who has schizophrenia; Mariana, who is sexually precocious but academically behind; and Leslie, also autistic and unable to communicate. Hayden could badly use an aide, and she accepts Leslie's mother, Ladbrooke, who is a beautiful but aloof women with a history of alcoholism and child abuse. Through their relationship, Ladbrooke comes to trust Hayden and begins to face up to her problems.Through working with the children, Ladbrooke develops considerable self-esteem.All but one of the children improve, as well, and make dramatic gains in academic and social skills. In an epilogue, we learn of updates, the most remarkable perhaps being Ladbrooke's.This is anything but a grim read, however, Hayden seasons her book with a healthy dollop of black humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Explanation
This book is excellent in defining what a 'Selectively Mute Child' is and goes through.Because of this book, I understand what my child is feeling when he becomes anxious.I not only learned that my child is 'Selectively Mute', but I also learned that I have been all of my life when I thought I was just 'painfully shy.'A reviewer made the comment that this book was overpriced.Maybe when they wrote the review they forgot that there is no set price on what parents pay to help the children that need us.Besides, part of the proceeds goes to a foundation called "Speak Out for Our Children."

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the first step to our son's recovery
Two days after my son was diagnosed with autism, I dragged my mom to the library to see if I could find out what in the world this meant to us.One of the first books that we stumbled on was this book by Karyn Seroussi. After reading several excerpts about her son to my husband, we agreed that we saw a lot of parallels in our own son.By the end of the weekend, we decided to take a leap of faith and implement the GFCF diet that Ms. Seroussi described.
1-0 out of 5 stars Huge guilt trip!
I read this book to try and find more help for my son with autism. After learning about the diets I realized they would be nearly impossible for my family to implement. These diets are very expsensive and my son would probably refuse to eat most foods and recipes talked about in the book.Realizing this I felt extremely guilty that I wasn't willing to do everything possible for my son. I have had my son in early intervention, speech therapy and a very demanding and structured program for over 3 years. These therapies have made a world of difference for him but he is still autistic. So, if I am unable to put him on this diet does this mean I have failed him as a mother?I don't think so.We can only do what we are all capable of doing for our children. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty if we don't do everything that everyone else has done.It would be nearly impossible to try every single thing suggested for helping to improve symptoms of, or even "cure", autism.I say give yourself a big pat on the back if you are doing the best you can for your child with ASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and PDD: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery
Excellent book! A must read for any parent (or teacher) of a child with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) or any neurodevelopmental delays, ADHD or allergies. It reads like a suspense novel, with the author/mother as detective, desperately, yet thoroughly trying to find clues to her son's sudden demise. Through her dedication and persevearance, she finds successful treatment for her son, and unravels a series of inexplicable biological mysteries involving foods, allergies, vaccines, viruses and their serious effects on the developing brains of children. It is a wake-up call to what we have previously viewed as "genetic" and "untreatable" and should make the medical community seriously abandon this old paradigm and put effort into establishing a new paradigm, where a causal relationship exists between ASD and its related disorders and biological and environmental triggers. This paradigm shift would dramatically alter the management of children diagnosed with ASD today and in the future. This book shows the power of a determined parent - reminiscient of the story of "Lorenzo's Oil". The moral of the story - don't rely on your child's doctor to tell you about this mode of treatment, or on any nutritional management - they are not prepared to do so. Traditional AMA medicine is geared towards quick diagnosis, treatment with drugs, and possibly some therapies. Often this involves treatment of symptoms, not cause. This book also made me wonder just how many 'troubled' or behaviorally challenged children could benefit from dietary changes, not medication. Mrs. Seroussi has done a great service to autistic and neurodevelopmentally challenged children and their parents. She has put into words an alternative choice for parents and offers hope, something the medical profession as a whole has not only not offered, but at times has suppressed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Supports the CO not the SLEEP!
I am so glad I read this book because it helps me feel OK about our family bed. HOWEVER I was hoping for some ways to get our baby to sleep better but solutions are sorely lacking. For those I found another Sear's recommendation: The No-Cry Sleep Solution, which supports cosleeping but also offers ways for everyone to get better sleep. If you want your family bed validated this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars about that one star review
**Dr. Sears's strongly suggests: "if you resent it, change it."He also addresses the fact that actual BED sharing does not always work and that there are many other ways to "share" sleep with your child/ren.I highly recommend this book (and the rest of the Dr. Sears Library) to any and all parents of babies and children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for This Book
If it weren't for this book, and for James Webb, I might have believed the teachers and psychologists who told me that something was really wrong with my daughter. After reading this book, I realized that several things were really right with her, but that we weren't handling her in the ways most likely to help her adapt and succeed.
1-0 out of 5 stars where to start?
I have so many problems with this book that there is no way one review can include them all.I'm going to list some of the major ones here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vital information at an appropriate time!
After having read this book, I can't help but wonder how many lives have been damaged by the ignorance of those involved in the Mental Health occupations.I hope when parents (or even non-parents) read this book, they learn how important it is to be self-informed (at least to some degree) before they go trusting "professional" help, especially when professionals these days are so sure of themselves and have so much power over others' lives. It's a fine line between playing God and being an appropriate therapist when it comes to understanding human behavior. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now a paperback with heart!
I have a loved one (nephew) that has been challenged with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I felt that reading this book would be informative as well as showing my support for the family. Well it was, and then some.
