5-0 out of 5 stars Unique way of talking about autism
I loved how the book focuses on the child/children without the disabitity and thier and their likes, dislikes, and abilities. Then shows how each child is different in a unique way.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
Being a parent of an autistic child, I love this book. Itnot only embraces the world of the autistic child, but explains it in a way that children can understand what it can be like to be autistic. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the flow is just right. I have been recommending this book to people in my community, and they share my feelings.Thank you for developing such a wonderful concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNDERSTANDING MOM
I am buying children's books on autism so that my [...] son can read them. I want him to learn as much about autism as he can. He does not have autism but I do. "the Autism Acceptance Book" explains how this condition affects the way some people, with autism, brains work. I want him to learn how I think and why I act somewhat differently from other mothers. This book can explain in a younger version of how autism works. There are many children out there that have autism and my son I know has met a few of these kids but he probably doesn't know that they have autism all he knows is that they are different. This book and others like it will help children that don't have autism to better understand those who do have autism. My son has a mom and a friend with autism and that person is me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A How to Book
I like the direct "how to" advice in this book.My husband and I have promised one another we will not medicate our daughter and this book has given us more faith that we can keep that committment. This book has given us ideas that are simple to use and practical. Our daughter has a 504 but after reading Dr. Ashley's book we requested another IEP meeting and revised her entire plan based upon the ideas in this book. She is doing much better in school now and homework is not the torture we all used to suffer. The 504 ideas in the back of the book are worth it alone. our school is now using dr. ashley's checklist to help design IEP and 504s for all their add and adhd kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
After reading this book I have a better understanding of children with ADD & ADHD and what parents are faced with on a regular basis.Extremely well written and I am looking for to more books from Dr. Ashley.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book.I ordered this when I needed tips on how to help my son sleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good for stay at home moms
This book has a strong bias toward co-sleeping and nursing for several years. It does not have any tips for increasing sleep for a working mom, and it offers no help to anyone that does not want to share a bed with their 3 year old.

2-0 out of 5 stars For attachment parents only
I bought this book in a sleep-deprived haze when my baby was waking every two hours during the night.Instead of offering advice, strategies, or even sympathy, I was told that this sleep-deprivation is "nightime parenting" and that I should enjoy my baby while he is small and needy. The attachment parenting spin on this book is so strong that it is virtually useless to anyone who does not follow this philosophy. I sent this book off to Goodwill.I much prefer the book by Mark Weisbluth, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.Weisbluth explains baby sleep, at what ages certain naps develop, and most importantly, lays out various strategies for getting your child to sleep better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For parents, teachers, tutors, day-care staff and more
Now in a revised and updated edition, The Survival Guide For Kids With LD* (*Learning Differences) by University of Nevada-Reno professors Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings, is a simply presented and easily accessible guide written especially for those dealing with children who have "learning differences". Emphasizing that having one of the many kinds of learning disabilities or cognitive restrictions doesn't preclude a child from learning, from having friends, or from growing up to be a successful adult. The readable prose is packed with tips for dealing with teasing, providing encouragement, simple black-and-white artwork, study tips, and more. The Survival Guide For Kids With LD* is highly recommended reading for parents, teachers, tutors, day-care staff members, -- and most especially, for kids ages 10 and up. Also highly recommended for teen readers is The Survival Guide For Teenagers With LD (0915793512; [$$$]); for parents, When Your Child Has LD (0915793873; [$$$]); and for educators, The School Survival Guide For Kids With LD (0915793326; [$$$]).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Survival Guide for Kids with LD
This book is a GREAT way for kids to learn about their own Learning Disabilities (the book calls them Learning Differences).I read this book to my son to help explain to him why he's noticing that he's different fromsome of the other kids in school. The book creates such a relaxed,non-threatening attitude about LDs, and asks some really great questions tohelp the kids see which LD(s) fit them.It addresses ADHD as well!It haspicture drawings of kids having trouble in school that my son could reallyrelate to!He was at once interested, urging me to read more and more, even though he was learning that he was in fact "different". What a wonderful tool for families and kids to learn about each other andthemselves. It's a positive book about the harsh reality of LDs - and it'swritten specifically for kids!Do your child a favor - read this book withthem! It will open up conversations and give you both the language andcourage you'll need to tackle the days and years ahead! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and useful read
I found this book very interesting and useful from many different perspectives.
1-0 out of 5 stars Stop-- This is a "must not" read.
You really need to be careful when reading this book.Understandingly, people facing the challenges of ADD/ADHD are stressed out and overly receptive to a voice like Hartmann's.Strangely unprofessional, Hartmann offers a "soft ball" lob to those looking for a feel good camp-fire-like discussion of the challenges of ADD/ADHD.This is not a productive way to approach these challenges.Overcoming these challenges takes discipline, a manner of thinking totally absent in Harmann's writing.I would go so far as to say that the author's writing style, the manner in which he presents his ideas, and the thinking behind those ideas represents the worst, rather than the most optimal aspects, of traits associated with ADD. Beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have a cue what to do!!!Read the book!
Thom Hartmann has written a series of books related to ADD/ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for parents of new preemies!
When our daughter was born 9 weeks premature, we immediately began looking for a source of accurate medical and practical information. When we found this book, we asked the director of neo-natal medicine at our child's hospital to look over the book. She immediately bought two copies for herself. The information is thorough and detailed without containing unnecesary detail. The medical information is presented understandably. A very good resource for worried parents of preemies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, needs updating
This is a great overview of just about everything a preemie parents needs to know. However, as the mother of a 370-grammer (26 weeks, doing great at 17 months) I would have liked to see a much larger amount of the book devoted to micro-preemies. Progress with micro-preemie survival is happening quickly and standards have changed a lot in five years.

5-0 out of 5 stars occupational therapist
This is an excellent resource book for both parents and health care professionals. With the recent trend towards family centered care, this book is truly an "essential guide". It has chapters on the medical procedures and medical nomenclature that is so foreign to those outside the medical community. There are also sections on the sociological implications and how a premature birth can affect the entire family. Healthcare professionals would benefit from a better understanding of the implications to the parents and families of these babies.I highly recommend that this book become a standard for neonatal intensive care nurseries. ... Editorial Review

Do you know a child who plays too rough, is uncoordinated, hates being touched, is ultra-sensitive (or unusually insensitive) to noise or sensations of heat and cold? Many pediatricians and other experts are beginning to recognize a link between some of these apparently unrelated behavior patterns.Children with perfectly normal "far senses" (such as sight and hearing) may have, because of a poorly integrated nervous system, serious problems with their "near senses," including touch, balance, and internal muscle sensation. It's called Sensory Integration Dysfunction, or SI. The announcement of yet another new syndrome is bound to raise skeptical eyebrows--and with good reason. (How do we know which child Read more

I just had my two and a half year old son evaluated as having SI.The therapist recommended this book.I found other reviews interesting and was immediately put off by the cover I am looking for whatever positive help I can get.I wish more was known about this condition.Or that I knew of a support group as I don't have any family who live anywhere close around me.My son has an amazing memory and is very lively and outgoing. He also has extreme tantrums and throws things and seemed to get really fustrated so some of the SI checklist definetly applyed and made sense. He also is very keyed into me and I can't even get in the shower or go to the bathroom without him getting upset. Some of what they state didn't seem to fit him though like he crawled and walked early and seemed to have good co-ordination eating with a spoon or fork?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Out of Sinc Child
This is the best book. I was writing a book about my son who has SI Dysfunction. He is 23 years old now. I was in Barnes and Noble looking for another book when I found this. I was blown away. I never knew there was a book like this. I could have really used this book when Marcus was little. It is so wonderful. I opened it and started reading about my son. My book is called What's Wrong With My Child? Struggling With Sensory Integration Dysfunction. It is only a mother's story of how my child coped with this thing. It is not meant to be a book like Carol Stock Kranowitz's. Her book is wonderful. Anyone who has any questions about their child who has SI Dysfunction. This book is it. Shelly R. Wilson

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but more research is needed
I have mixed feelings on this book. The book itself is well written and accessible, explaining new concepts in a clear, reader-friendly way. It's the actual content that I'm on the fence about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading!
This would be a good book for all parents. If you read this while your child is still an infant, you will save a lot of frustration for yourself as well as your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Temperamental Difficulties
The Difficult Child is a self-help book for the parents of children with difficult temperaments. While all children have characteristic behavioral quirks, temperaments are so deep-seated that they manifest in infancy and are usually retained for a lifetime. Since temperaments can be inherited, they are probably linked to specific genes. In fact, one behavioral trait -- high activity level -- in mice seems to be associated with a specific gene (along with other characteristics), but such traits have not yet been genetically identified in humans.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good info but discriminatory
Firstly, I found his assumption that there is one type of "difficult" child annoying. One person might find a high activity level child difficult whereas another is more likely to find a low activity level child difficult. He mentions "goodness of fit" but doesn't seem to fully grasp how that concept means the term difficult is relative. A personal example: many people say autistic kids are difficult, but as an autistic child, I find NT kids more difficult.

3-0 out of 5 stars One tough story more than an insight into autism
Well, if you want to get more of an idea of autism, where better than from the autobiography of an autistic woman?
5-0 out of 5 stars Donna Williams' Long & Winding Road
Donna Williams was very fortunate to know she had autism and was contending with an "unexplained difference" that was really not her fault. She has suffered major losses at an early age. When she was 4, her beloved grandfather died and her grandmother left their home. Her father was not allowed to have any contact with her and her mother was described as suffering from alcoholism and a myriad of phobias. She cherishes the hope that Donna will fulfill her own dream of being a dancer.

I wrote a reaction paper on this book for my exceptional child psychology class. After my 11 yr old was diagnosed with Asperger's our doctor loaned me her copy of this book.By chapter two I had ordered my own copy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was so impressed after reading this book, I am still in awe.It is absolutely excellent. When I saw the title, I knew it would be a book I'd likely be interested in as autism is a subject which is very near and dear to me.However, this has far exceeded any hopes I had.If anybody remotely has any interest in autism, this is an absolutely must read.I have been to many workshops and conferences on autism, and this has touched base with somethings I've noticed about from what I have seen at some of these workshops as well as some events I have attended geared to those with autism as well as family members, however, before this, nothing I have read has really touched base on the subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on AS
This is a must read book if your child has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.I found it very informative and helpful. The author not only understands how AS kids think he gives wonderful advice about how to deal with just about any problem that they might face from childhood through college.

i found this book to be very helpful. my 12 year old son was diagnosed with aspergers three years ago. but now even in year 2006 not all educators know about aspergers, so my husband and i like so many other parents have to educate ourselves first and then educate others. after all we are our sons advocates. social skills training is very important for those diagnosed with aspergers. so school is not just 8 to 3 it is also morning noon and night at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars supersocial skills
The social skills program in this outstanding book will be a positive resource for all professionals and parents. The goal is to give an opportunity for success to children and teens with autism spectrum disorders.Children with other impairments could also greatly benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, insightful, and helpful for a clinician
I loved William Stillman's book.I find that I communicate much more effectively with the children I work with as this book has widened my scope of understanding. We are participating in an event which supports Autism research and we are borrowing William's motto:"Presume Intellect" (with full credit to the author, of course) in order to help educate the local population.Wonderful job, William! My clients' parents have all loved the book too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Presume Intellect and More!
A friend recommended this book to me. We had recently met and spent time at a conference in Upstate NY. Both of us have independently met hundreds, if not thousands of people in the course of our working lives, but there was something very unique that we mirrored to each other, like no other person we had met. It wasn't something that we could put into words, but the similarity in the ways in which we operated or 'coped' in the world were uncanny. Shortly upon my return to Hawaii, I received an excited e-mail from her. Eileen, you MUST read this book! It's about us!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars More information needed
Thank you for dispelling meaningless ways of thinking about the behaviors and presentation of our children with autism. If you were here right now I would give you a big hug and kiss.I would proudly introduce you to my children as one who has crossed over from the autism spectrum to fullness of life.

Seeing Through New Eyes is an introduction to the treatment of visual conditions that go beyond 20/20 eyesight. Developmental or behavioral vision care can have a significant impact on behavioral, social and learning problems associated with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Poor eye contact and other behaviors are often the result of difficulty with "ambient vision" that drives spatial awareness, visual organization and balance/coordination. Dr. Kaplan gives guidance on how to identify the visual deficits of nonverbal children, select performance lenses that will alter ambient vision and how to create individual vision management programs in order to assist each individual in achieving maximum success in life. This book is essential reading for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and professionals in the fields of autism, optometry, ophthalmology, psychology and education. ... Read more

... since this is the *definitive* book for people like me who've been through this life-changing experience. And as an avid reader who's already bought many other Preemie books, I sure don't say WOW lightly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good therapy
This book was very helpful to me and my husband. We had a long NICU stay of 9 weeks and felt like we were the only ones in the unit who wasn't in and out. This book caters to people like us who had to deal with the on-going, never-ending days of procedures, tests, emotional ups and downs, and disappointments. I was really able to prepare myself for discharge with the chapters about homecoming. The best part of this book was that we didn't feel so alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solving the puzzle

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, But More For The Academic
I was very excited to find a book with this title, "Teaching Learning Strategies and Study Skills to Students with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorders, or Special Needs." While I am not a trained or certified teacher I do have 2 children with special needs and I NEED HELP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
I bought this book to assist in my Learning Strategies Class. I was supposed to teach study skills to high school students with LD, but of course was given no materials to work with. The students enjoyed the activities. I do not think that I could have survived without this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the ADHD books - read this one first
This book is a winner.I have bought and read many different books on ADHD - from all perspectives - and I like this one the best.It is balanced on the medication issue, with accurate and well-researched medical explanations of the benefits and shortcomings. The title makes it seem anti-medication but the author does recommend medication (with certain caveats, and easy-to-understand explanations of the reasons it may not work well in some individuals), so don't be put off by this if your child is on medication. His goal is to go beyond a simple prescription to give the parent other helpful information that can provide a well-rounded approach to helping their ADHD child. The book is very practical, with questionnaires, checklists, or homework at the end of each chapter.
