2-0 out of 5 stars I know you hate the drug industry but...
It sounds like many of you have children who have ADD and you chose not to go the medication route.Be careful - and don't forget it is your child not you who has tolive with this - and you should not judge the success of any plan on "if you think he is behaving better" but rather on his/her happiness. This is not about you - it is about your child.I think any child who changes his diet will manifest different behaviors. But ADD is a genetic, neurological disorder - to use the word "onset" and "prevention" of ADD - this is the most demeaning and blaitantly wrong term I have ever heard.Attention Deficit Disorder is caused by an insufficient release and absorbtion of Dopamine. Can a diet affect this - maybe a little - but concerta, ritalin, etc - actually do affect the release of dopamine.I applaud all of you in your research of ADD but be skeptical- of medication and of "Diets".What I do know is that I attend middlebury college and for the first three semesters I was getting mostly B's some A-'s (all without medication) - then convinced I was trying too hard or atleast much harder than everyone else for the same outcome, I decided to try concerta - which I refused in my earlier childhood years (seven-ten) as most kids do.I took an extra class and I pulled off 4A-s and a B+.I would like to think it was all me - and it really was all me, but the hard thing to understand is that many kids with ADD are intelligent enough - instead it is the neurology.Don't sell your child short by staking yourself as an anti-pharmaceutical parent...The doctors (experts) prescribe it for a reason.Keep your child playingsports, give him structure, have compassion and that is half the battle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
After much searching we bought this book to help our son.We are hesitant to try medication due to his medical history so thought this book sounded like a good alternative. Many of the reviews are very positive which was encouraging.
1-0 out of 5 stars Supplement industry consultant!
Part of the author's bio says she is a consultant to the supplement industry. No wonder. The list of (mostly unproven) supplements is looooooong and probably costly. I can't imagine a child or adolescent taking all of these. I'm looking for an alternative remedy for my child's ADD, but this book was no help. I'm returning it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Concerned
If you suspect you or your child has ADHD ("A.D.D." is not the correct acronym), please look elsewhere for treatment and practical strategies.Any ADHD intervention book worth its salt includes a variety of approaches to treatment. If you want to avoid medication, there are plenty of options - this book is nothing novel. However, medication does work best for many children and adults and the benefits definitely outweigh the "costs" (which are relatively minor - these medications are considered quite safe).Stimulant medications do not "change" children's personalities or "break" their spirits - they help them improve their ability to function academically, emotionally, and socially. Why wouldn't you want these things for your child? Please talk to a physician or psychologist and ask for book recommendations. This book is a waste of time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Conspiracy?
According to Armstrong ADD is a conspiracy theory?I just couldn't get past that!I looked at a few of the 50 ways... Less TV?Do you really need to include that?Common sense!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Myth of the A.D.D. Child: 50 Ways to Improve Your Child's Behavior and Attention Span Without Drugs, Label, or Coercion

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
i felt that this was a really good introduction to Language Processing Problems that children can have. I bought it to learn more about processing in order to help my autistic son but after reading it i saw that my neurotypical daughter also has a very slight issue processing. That is why she has a hard time with long division and when she is quickly telling us a story she sometimes has a hard time spitting it out...it is mild but the book offers basic suggestions to overcome the very simple problems some children have. It's easy reading and once again I feel its a very good intro to this issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent brief book to give to a teacher or parent
I am an experienced reader on both language processing and expressive language disorders.I found this book to be a great concise manual to hand to a mainstream school teacher dealing with a child with processing issues. It's not too long, and it's a relatively clear and functional manual that doesn't become overly detailed or heavy. The only problem I can say is that it's a little pricey for the size, but there is something to be said for brevity - it gets straight to the point.

2-0 out of 5 stars I had to return this book
It just didnt answer the bio medical questions I had to help my son. Still learning and reading, but this book wasn't "complete" for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource Book
I am a adult male with ASD.This is the first resource I have gotten on the subject. It has helped to find other resources (Autism-Digest, ASA, etc.).Chapter 2 helped to explain my problem to me.I especially enjoyed chapter 9 since I am an adult now and have to make the best of it.I do disagree with her on page 311 where she encourages "it takes a village to raise children".No it does not!It takes the parents to raise children!Grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, friends, and churches can help the parents, but it is the parent's responsibility for their children--no one else! I also disgree on page 162 where she encourages letting teenage boys masturbate by scheduling a time for it every day.Teenage boys need to be taught to resist lusting and wait for marriage.SOme of things I liked in chapter 9 dealing with adulthood were: 1. page 290 where she encourages us to use whatever talents you have to impress people in order to get a job (I happen to be known as the "singing mailman" at the private Bible college that I work at--the facutly and students like it), 2. on pages 305-6, she talks about being married to someone with ASD (I am not married and not able to drive a car, but I am reminded about women often by people here--I do know it will not easy because I am "different"), and on page 283, she mentioned that families and friends not the government should be helping us!I agree! Most people in America think it is the government's job to do everything for them! I am not against the government giving tax breaks for people looking after disabled people, but I do not need them to force someone to hire me, or make them like me!I commend her for having to study this subject for herself because she had a son with an ASD and wanted to help him the best she knew how and not "delegate the responsibility to someone else"!

5-0 out of 5 stars a Musictherapist says: GREAT BOOK!
This is a very good book and will give you tons of useful information. What is autism? perhaps it's like a mysterious dance - in & out of reach - always changing for those who can be present.I choose 'TO BE PRESENT'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parent's with an NLD child.
If you are struggling with how to help your NLD child, then this book will be an excellent resource. The author uses clear, concise illustrations to help the reader understand the disorder and more importantly, what it's like to be a kid with NLD.
4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful place to start
As a school psychologist sometimes I need to have something from what to draw information - I have so much data and need words to define what I see. This book does a wonderful job of summarizing the types of behaviors and concerns that teachers bring to me.Being able to share this resource with them and draw from it as I attempt to assist parents and teachers with a student's learning profile is a joy. Thanks for all of the tremendous effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars The light bulb goes on!
I am so happy with this book. It totally describes my daughter to a "T" and has been so helpful to me and all of her educators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Complete Allergy Book Out There
As a mother of a child with severe food allergy and a food allergy support group leader, I am so thank ful for this book. I look at it almost every day for tips and guidance. I also recommend it to friends and family. It is the most complete allergy book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Helplessness to Empowerment
My toddler grandson was diagnosed with severe peanut allergies, after a very frightening "first" experience with peanut butter. Since I am involved in his care, I've listened carefully to his parents as they've explained the use of the EpiPen, and how to manage an anaphylactic reaction. I must admit that I once felt a sense of confusion and helplessness. Since reading this book, I feel much more empowered and confident that I will be able to properly manage an emergency situation with him. We now have a family plan, should an emergency arise, as well as signed consent forms, and a step-by-step checklist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher noted improvements first week!!!!
I purchased this book in hopes of decreasing or eliminating my 11.5 year old son's Ritalin. He started the vitamins/minerals/and Omega 3 and so far we have eliminated dairy products and prepared waffles and cereals switching to wheat, gluten, and milk free waffle mix, and increased water consumption- 6 days ago. His teacher asked me what I changed at home on day 5; she asked because he had an excellent week. The timing was not planned but the week coincided with the state standardized testing- he didn't even use the scribe his IEP states he's entitled to!! I will soon decrease his Ritalin working closely with his psychiatrist, therapist, teachers, and sports coaches. I have already recommended this book to school staff and parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for parents who want to help their children
As a mother of a child with selective mutism, I can tell how helpful this book can be. Practical and comprehensive, it helps you rate your child's level of selective mutism and gives hints on how to work your way up the ladder of a child's social relationships. Feels good to see the progress. If your child is well described by the first chapter, then get a copy of this book for the teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a find!
What a find!! Helping Your Child with Selective Mutism is a well-researched and organized resource that is a must read for educators and parents alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional resource for parents and professionals
As a clinician that has worked extensively in the area of selective mutism, I have read most of the available resources on the topic, and Dr. McHolm's well written and comprehensive book is by far the most valuable.Based upon research findings and the author's years of experience, the book includes information about selective mutism and a detailed, practical description of strategies that can help children become more comfortable speaking.I would strongly recommend this resource to both parents and professionals that are supporting a child with selective mutism.

5-0 out of 5 stars BP in children definitely exists
I didn't have to read the book to know that BP can be a correct diagnosis in children.During my childhood I had intense emotions and fluidity of thoughts.Standardized tests could not measure creativity in science -- I blew them away.History; forget it.Regardless, the same emotion and thought issues that existed throughout childhood translated to adulthood.Anger became extreme and dangerous in adulthood. This is when I extensively researched psychiatric diagnoses and discovered that BP fit me perfectly.Kay Jamisons book confirmed my research. Many years and much medication later, I'm more normal than normal people.
5-0 out of 5 stars The first resource I recommend to parents of newly dxd kids
As I was reading this book, I wondered how the authors were able to witness what was going on in my family. It was like they were flies on the wall - they described my family to a T.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bi-polar Child hard cover book review
This book was exactly as described. It was informative and yet not too medically explicit that I couldn't understand the information being explained. It also held a lot of examples from real families which was also helpful and made me feel like this wasn't just a medical book, it was a tool to help me understand that my child wasn't alone in the world which was comforting to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful book
I found this a very helpful book but the format is a little too "dumb" (short chapters, star boxes, illustrations). I preferred "Guiding the Gifted Child".

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for parents of exceptional children
Now in a substantially revised & updated edition, The Survival Guide For Parents Of Gifted Kids: How To Understand, Live With, And Stick Up For Your Gifted Child by parental consultant, educator and gifted children advocate Sally Yahnke Walker is a straightforward, sensible guide to parenting and advocating in behalf of a gifted child, especially when dealing with local schools and school boards. Individual chapters address discovering and living with gifted talents, handling problems such as sensitivity and a smart mouth, and working for improvement in the local school curriculum. The Survival Guide For Parents Of Gifted Kids is highly recommended for non-specialist general readers as being an excellent primer for parents of exceptional children everywhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but slim in some areas

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book About The Gift of A Child With Asperger's
Jeffrey Cohen's book came at exactly the right moment for me--just as our oldest was getting ready to enter high school.I laughed when I needed to, and I saw our family (at its best and its worst) all over the pages of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written and insightful.
From the very first page, I could tell that this book spoke directly to me. I have read other books about Asperger's Syndrome in an attempt to better understand my son. I never considered the toll that it was taking on both my wife and I as parents, as well as people. This book, as he so aptly phrases it, is NOT about my son. It's about me and my wife. Mr. Cohen writes in a very matter of fact way, getting to the point with insight and humor that really puts things into a new perspective. We had looked for support groups, but hadn't found any within a reasonable distance. Reading this book made me feel like we weren't alone in the world, and that what I had looked at as "failed parenting" was actually a natural human reaction to what were at times overwhelming situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Great Advice
Having a "special needs" child is an incredibly stressful ongoing event and something author Jeff Cohen knows well as the father of a child with Asperger Syndrome. In its simplest terms, Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a form of higher functioning autism. Instead of another book on how to help the child, Jeff Cohen looked at the often forgotten group in such situations: the parents. Parents, regardless of the child's disability, are often blamed by society for their child's problems and may not have the local support needed to deal with the issues. This book, as he notes in the first chapter, is designed to be a sort of portable support group for those days and times it all gets to be too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't get any closer to the truth
Our society has seen explosive growth in the number of people identified as autistic and an even larger growth of those identified as having symptoms on the "autistic spectrum". So I expect we'll see more and more books and articles describing these two populations and probably more books like "Send In the Idiots" which tells the story of autistic people as researched and written by an autistic person.
4-0 out of 5 stars interesting for people with autism in the family
I have two children with autism and found this book to be very interesting regarding behaviors and how as adults the subjects lived. However the writing gets a little wordy. The author goes on in detail, for instance, on communication problems.Of course you have to remember that the author has autism himself, which makes me understand his need to go into detail.Still you can speed read over the parts in detail and the actual people are very interesting.I could see my children in some of the subjects and it helped me to understand them a little better.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inside view of Autism
This book was an eye-opener for me. Since we have a grandchild with ASD, it provided me(us) with an excellent inside and helped me(us) to understand the hurdles which confront children with ASD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough
This was a great book for us. It really helped us with the bedtime portion of sleep training. Within a few nights of being put to bed awake, our son was putting himself to sleep without crying. However, he still dealt with night wakings for another few months. According to Mindell, the night wakings should eventually cease. I read The No Cry Sleep Solution, The Baby Whisperer, and Good Night, Sleep Tight. What finally worked for us was Good Night, Sleep Tight by Kim West. We realized the importance of eliminating night feedings, which our son was using as a crutch, or a negative sleep association. It did involve some tears, but we are all sleeping much better now. His naps have even improved! Good Night, Sleep Tight seems very much the middle ground between crying it out and the no-cry sleep solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This book isn't for every child but for my son - it worked perfectly.I loved the fact that, even though my son is 14 months old, I was able to jump into the book in the middle and still have solutions (other books - you start from infancy or you're lost). While I didn't feel that everything in this book was right for our child - I was comfortable picking and choosing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Decidedly NOT vague
I was anxious to find a solution that didn't involve crying.I purchased the no-cry sleep solution by Elizabeth Pantley, which I found helpful, but vague. As I searched for more information I stumbled on Jodi Mindell's book, and devoured the thing in two days. Some reveiwers don't like Dr. Mindell's approach because she advocates some crying, but I would argue that those people didn't read the book very carefully.Dr. Mindell advocates all of the solutions outlined in Elizabeth Pantley's book, but with more detail and explanation. She also explains how certain parental behaviors can CAUSE sleep issues.I learned that some of the things I was doing was making the situation worse.Bottom line, Dr. Mindell advocates crying ONLY after you have made all the other changes to improve sleeping behavior.Dr. Mindell's book is well researched and well written. It is evident that she is well credentialed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Sensory Integration!
This book is a great introduction to sensory integration and how our senses effect our learning. As A professional who works with individuals who have sensory difficulties, I feel that this book would be helpful for new teacher trainings, as an introduction to sensory integration, or as a guide to help individuals (such as parents) who do not work in an education or medically based industry that need to gain a better understanding of sensory integration. All teachers should use these basic techniques in their classrooms; for individuals who are interested in a deeper understanding of sensory integration dysfunction and other related difficulties, perhaps a book with a deeper explanation of the CNS and sensory systems would better suit their needs.Overall, it's a good quick read!

5-0 out of 5 stars sensory secrets how to jump start learning in children
Of everything that I've read this is the best book. Its a fairly quick read. It's broken down into very specific catigories. It gives you warning signs. It tells you how to work on a problem with professionals. It shows you hundreds of ways to work on each specific sensory motor problem. It also helps you to evaluate your own child and explains how certain holes in the learning foundation could quickly lead to learning diviculties later on in life (early grade school). If you feel that there is a problem with your child and you can't put your finger on it - this is the book that will give you invaluable stepping stones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great "Intro" Book
I found this to be a wonderful book for parents just entering the world of Sensory Integration Dysfunction.I explains so many of the terms and theories used by Occupational Therapists. However, this truly is an introduction, and not very helpful to anyone who has been working with an OT for any length of time. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not that much Information
I was looking for a book how to deal with teachers that are uneducated about ADD, my son has it and they just want to classify him as mentally retarted. I need more info.
5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers! Take note!
For its format alone, this is a must-buy for teachers and the administrators who work with them!As a middle school AP, I've visited far too many classrooms where teachers try to keep students' attention nailed to dreary handwritten overheads in black marker no less. Yawn.Every page of this book demonstrates what good overheads should look like (minus the color I'd like to see)while the text explains WHY this is imperative for ADHD students.GET IT!I love it. I ordered two more for my school.

3-0 out of 5 stars I liked how the number was in the title
When I saw this book, I liked that there was a number in the title and the @ thing too.But when I was reading it, most of the words weren't numbers. Some of the pages were pictures and I liked those ones the best.I think that if you wanted this book, you should get it.As someone who had a hard time in high school, making friends etc., I found this was a good way to think back on it all.I'm not sad anymore because of them. ...
