4-0 out of 5 stars One of the many tools to use with treating PDD
There is so much out there about Autism, classified as a pervasive developmental and neuropsychiatric disorder, whose causes are not fully understood. I feel this book is not limited to those with PDD or ASD; it is useful for any child, as other reviewers have mentioned.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book there is to help your child overcome autism.
This book has been the single most important reference book I've used to help my son overcome autism.

Although this book has some good recipes, it isn't the book the first one is.Her first book had recipes that were much easier to cook and to adapt to your own child's needs (if they had any yeast problems or other allergies). This cook book is good but if you can only buy one, spend the money on the first one or on a Carol Fenster cookbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
As a former special education teacher, I am sometimes too aware of little problems. I know my child's self-esteem is affected by this problem however, and this book is very helpful for being me to work with her at home, especially since teachers don't seem to think there is a problem. This book, along with "The Gift of Dyslexia" brought so much practical, usefel information. I took this book out from the library, and will buy it, to use for a longer duration at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical strategies for dyslexia
Ms. Stowe has managed to be both concise and thorough. This book is aimed primarily at teachers of students who have dyslexia, butparents will findit extremely helpful in understanding their child's (their own!) struggleswith a confusing and frustrating condition. The interviews with adolescentand adult persons diagnosed with dyslexia bring the more academic aspectsof the work to life, and help the reader to identify with the informationin the other sections.Unlike those in some other books on the subject, the activities presented actually seem to be as they are described on thecover, "Practical."I especially liked the suggestions forteaching writing and making writing accessible to students on differinglevels (word, sentence, paragraph) who might be working within the samegroup.I wish I'd had this book when my son was younger!I wouldrecommend this book to principals and teachers, to parents of kids inschool and parents who homeschool, and to youth and adults who grew up withany of the difficulties described. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars !!!
Excellent book. For those who are still not convinced about the link between mercury and autism I strongly recommend the book "Mercury: The Winged Messenger".

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it twice, and I'm still angry!
A lot has been said about blatant coverup and shoddy science exposed in this book by David Kirby. It looks like there's some movement now, certainly at least in part due to this book. The Senate just passed the Combating Autism Act of 2006, and it's now on to the House.
4-0 out of 5 stars Explanationsfor Autism Epidemic
I thank the families mentioned in this book. Each one tried to help their autistic child and wanted an answer to what caused Autism. Some of them started SafeMinds as a result of their research and inquiries.I was born in 1977 and have an ASD so the possible thimerosal in vaccinations causing the Autism epidemic in the 1990s would not explain me. Thimerosal (p. 48) is 49.6 percent organic mercury used as a preservative in vaccinations.Organic mercury (p. 48) is the second most toxic substance on earth. Forget about "polluting" our air and water, and ask why are we putting toxic materials into children?People are more important than the earth! For some reason The Center for Disease and Control and The Institute of Medicine along with Lilly (a vaccine manufacturer) have not cooperated with them in answering their questions or giving them help. Why would Dr. Thomas Verstraeten go to Belgium in 2001 after leading a study on vaccination datalink study on thimerosal, be told not to answer any contacts from people in America about vaccinations, and to escape subpeonas (p. 341)? I appreciate Congressmen Dan Burton (R-IN) and Dave Weldon (R-FL) for listening to these families, holding hearings (I have called their offices to thank them), and talking the CDC and IOM into getting the public answers to autism and thimerosal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I found this book to be very helpful to give to my son's teachers before each school year.It answers many important questions, and is a great starting point for newer teachers or those who aren't very familiar with autistic spectrum disorders. It's very readable, and since teachers are so busy, they appreciate that it is short and to the point. This book has been helpful to my son's teachers, and therefore has helped my son. I am buying my third copy today to donate to the school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy one for all your favorite teachers
This book is wonderfully practical with easy to implement ideas. It never gets bogged down in medical terms or psychology. A must buy gift for your child's teacher and school.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have read them all - this is the most specific
I believe this book gives the most specifc information especially for very young infants.I was interested in starting good sleep habits with my 4 week old and this was the only book that had any info about babies this young. That is exactly what Kim West teaches - good habits.I was not interested in waiting until my baby was 3 mo old with somewhat sleep habits and trying to reteach him.
5-0 out of 5 stars this is NOT the "cry it out" method... and it works!
At 4 months my son started waking every couple of hours.I read a review of this book in magazine and, after one night of getting up every HALF HOUR, I bought it.I never used the "shuffle" part of it- my presence in the room was too distracting for him. But, there are so many variations included in the book so it can be adapted to your situation. The limit of 15 minutes of crying/fussing was helpful, and the "OK" to go and get him if he is really wailing regardless of the time frame reassured me that I wasn't "ferberizing".
5-0 out of 5 stars From a mom who tried everything
I really think my son might be the worst sleeper in the world. From day one he's been an intense, super-alert little guy and never liked to sleep. I think I have read literally every book on child/baby sleep and this one is my favorite. Here's why:

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading, great recipies!
I don't understand why some reviewers say that this book isn't for all allergies. I have 3 kids with different allergens. I enjoyed the easy "key" at the bottom of each recipe with different substitutions. Some reviewers said they were brainless, I say "give me brainless substitutions!" At the end of the day when I'm making dinner, I need easy, quick, and edible! I like the fact that the book calls for rice flour. I don't like cooking with other gluten free flours because they do taste icky. Like any cookbook that I have, there are recipies that arn't our favorite, but there are many more that we enjoy and use on a daily basis- Have you even tried the flourless chocolate cake, the the lemon cake, the soups, the great snack ideas? Any one who says there is nothing in this book for them, has obviously not read the whole thing. From one mommy to another- Good Job Authors! P.S -Awsome party ideas, our kids classroom loved our cupcakes this year!

2-0 out of 5 stars A gluten-free cookbook passed off as dairy, nut and egg-free.
Many, many recipes in this book call for eggs, nuts, peanuts and milk.My son is allergic to all these but CAN actually eat wheat just fine.I thought this book would have lots of ideas on things I could feed my son.But really it is a gluten-free cookbook which calls for his allergens and then says, "for egg allergies omit eggs", "for nut allergy omit nuts."I could have just bought a gluten-free cookbook and omited eggs and nuts. There would be no difference except that I wouldn't feel frustrated every time I read "omit nuts" and "use soy milk instead of milk" or whatever.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I thought this book was going to be full of great recipes for parents who have kids with food allergies. Some of the recipes tell you "common sense" things; substitute egg with Energ egg replacer, which if you have a child with egg allergies you know that. It has a recipe for Easy Mac that has noodles, butter and a cheese packet. That is the recipe on the macaroni box. Sorry! I feel like I wasted my money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Your Child is Hyperactive
It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feingold diet saved my child's life
Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS TOOL NEEDED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book!My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, orlisten for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience!I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help.No specialist was able to help.I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes.Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!!I explained what I did:exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated.THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!!From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!!She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!!This is the complete truth.I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it!The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!!Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Only for "perfect" ADHD children
If your child truly deals with ADHD in combination with any other conditions (RAD, OCD, etc), this is NOT the book for you.The author clearly deals with children with a singular diagnosis.
5-0 out of 5 stars With the right support, children and adults with ADHD can control their symptoms and lead happy and fulfilled lives.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most feared and misunderstood of all medical conditions. Despite over 200 scientific papers being published on this neurological condition every year, it remains stigmatised and controversial. Some doctors don't even believe it exists. Yet it is estimated that as many as 13-15% of the childhood population, and over four million adults are affected by ADHD. These people are often described as stupid, lazy, disorganized, wild, out of control or woozy on drugs. But the reality is altogether more complex, and deeply moving. Lara Webb, as many scientists believe that people with ADHD behave the way they do because they have key differences in the frontal lobes of their brains--the part that plays an important role in the way that we control our impulses. People with ADHD have difficulty suppressing their impulses and therefore respond to more cues than the average person. Rather than failing to pay attention, they pay attention to everything. This means they're often overloaded with information they cannot filter out. These people are unable to stop and think about a situation, to 'apply the brakes' and consider the consequences before they act.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone who has a child with adhd
I found this book to be so refreshing.Infact I can say that out of all the books I've read on this topic (which is alot) this one was most helpful. It takes all of the characteristics of the adhd child and teaches you how to both embrace them and appreciate them, in turn it helps you to reinforce to your child that they are indeed different but very, very lucky to have this incredible personality.Once you truly start to believe in your child and love their madness for what it is, creative energy, you will stop being stressed out and worried about the future and start loving the present.Life isn't always perfect but it is an adventure when you are lucky enough to have a child with this special gift.If you're child has adhd please read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for parents
A good book for parents. In the social skills intervention we developed, I recommend a range of books for parents based on their accessibility and general sensitivity to parents needs. This book is one of the ones in that basket - there aren't many. I would also recommend reading Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars So you don't believe us Granola Wackos?
Well, my sister had severe ADHD and Hyperactivity, to the point she was kicked out of a dozen daycares. All we heard was what a horrible kid she was. Finally in 1987 we found Dr. Feingold's book and within weeks she was listening, respecting boundaries and going to sleep at a decent hour.My mother kept her on the diet and each year communicated to her teachers that her behavior was contigent on her diet. If the teacher deviated, he/she would have to accept the consequences.Believe me, one incident of giving her kool-aid or another forbidden food and they did not want to repeat it.Over the years, I have recommended this book to many people.Few have taken the time to do what is necessary to help their children, prefering a quick fix with a "pill."I can assure you, when I have children, they will be on this diet!Oh and my mother was a senior executive at Sprint before retiring, I'd hardly call her a Granola Wacko!

I'll say it right now - this review is not going to win me any friends. But, I feel this book has the potential to influence people in a negative way, so I'm going to list my concerns.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Child
This is the 1st book I've read of Torey Hayden, I enjoyed it very much and would suggest it to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved it but it was sad
I Loved this book. Torey Hayden is one of the best authors that writes about her own experiences working with special needs or difficult children. This child in the book, Shiela, comes from a neglectful background. She doesn't speak. But Torey works her magic, as well as uses as much tlc and patience with her as she can. It is a great book, but it is sad because you read what this young child has to go through in her young life. Torey also has other books out there too that are about her expereices and learning journeys. There is a followup to this story about Sheila, it is called The Tiger's Child . Both are really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense, practical guide.
10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD: How To Overcome Chronic Distraction & Accomplish Your Goals by Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, Ph. D. (Adjunct Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Florida) is a solid self-help guide to developing lifestyle patterns to offset the disadvantages for attention-deficit disorder in adults. The techniques to improve concentration and memory, manage money and time better, and raise self-confidence, while especially invaluable to adults with ADD, are also quite useful for lay readers of all backgrounds. From the "Five Box" method for sorting one's possessions (fix it, give it away, keep it, don't know, and garbage) to the value of using alarms in wristwatches to keep track of time (especially while on the computer) to using a seven-day pill container to ensure one takes the correct dosage of one's medication over the course of a week, the advice in 10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD is invaluable. Additional tips for diplomatically disclosing that one has ADD, picking up nonverbal cues in social situations and much more round out this no-nonsense, practical guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many studies quoted out of context.
At first glance, the book appears to be well researched, but upon digging further into the quoted studies, many of them are taken out of context (neurological conclusions taken from nutrition and respiratory journals; conclusions based on preliminary findings and other non-peer reviewed sources; conclusions taken from studies that were not the primary focus of the study with doubtful population sizes; etc.)I was disappointed that the science didn't stand up to a rigorous examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enzymes help make food work better.
I must admit that I had not realized before how important enzymes are to our body.I had first heard about using them when I took my autistic boy to see a D.A.N. nutritionalist. We put him on enzymes on the direction of the nutritionalist.I was amazed. His previously bloated belly was flat by the end of the first day!I had always thought that he had an extra large belly but had thought that it was just one of the things that a child has.He also eats a wider variety of foods and he is overall a happier child.THe book is easy to understand and does not promise miracles but that you will feel better. My husband and I have since started taking the enzymes too and I know that I am having less trouble with my gaseous bowel.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to help your child on speech problems
This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great info and very easy to read!
I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS BOOK!!!!
I couldn't disagree more with the previous review. I found this book to be totally reassuring. In fact, over and over it tells the parent it is not your fault. It lists ways you can help your child, but doesn't ever say you caused the problem.I have a 6 year old son with a speech and language problem, including apraxia at one time. There IS information about it in the 2001 edition. I wonder if she has the most recent edition? I found the book to be easy to read and understand. It was much more helpful than the other books I have read or purchased on this topic. It was recommended to me by my sister, who is the head of a major pediatric speech pathology clinic. She said it was technically the most accurate book on the topic out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classroom success!
My son's teacher has been using this wonderful book to helpmy child improve his social skills. We are already seeing him take turns in converstion instead of interrupting everyone. He is also showing a better understanding of personal space.I am lucky to have a teacher that is so in tune and concerned with offering these types of lessons in the classroom. She recently incorporated stress and anxiety management(which is also an issue) with the help of a new curriculum called the "Children's Awareness Curriculum".
4-0 out of 5 stars How to KNOW if your child is making social progress!!
I bought this book as a result of getting my son's IEP back with vague social goals and no way to tell if he was progressing. Most schools do not know how to write social goals, let alone make them measurable. It is our job as parents to find the answers the school can't or won't find. I rejected the social goals on his IEP and went in search for an answer. This book was it!5-0 out of 5 stars A great pleasure to read for practical advice
While not as weighty as some other social skill oriented books, Moyes' book is probably more accessible to the average parent and teacher. It is a relatively short book and easily read. The references are good and there is no scent of snake oil from the overall product.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read - Lots of Information
This book is useful for so many reasons. It is great for teachers or others who intereact with individuals with a variety of special needs. It is perfect for parents who are trying to narrow down/begain to understand their child's diagnosis. It is perfect for a child who has an Alphabet Soup diagnosis - multiple dx - for one book which address all of them.I would reccomend you read this book!!It is well writen and full of great information

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended

1-0 out of 5 stars A concerned adult with ADHD
I am an adult with ADHD inatintive type. I have struggled all my life with this condition.Howevere, I have managed to earn a BA in psychology and I am currently working on a masters degree.Because of my expierences in psychology classes I know something about scientific research and empirical evidence. This book was a major dissapointment to me because it lacks thesimple scholary research to prove the claims made by Dr Lawless. I am afraid this book is nothing more then modernday snake-oil that will cause more harm then good.
