4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Older kids
I think this would be a highly useful book for parents of children 8 and older. There are activities for your child to do like rating their worry on a number scale that I felt were too abstract/advanced for my 4 year old.The general information about anxieties would be good for parents of children of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas For Desperate Parents
My 8 year old daughter has a lot of issues with anxiety. Fortunately it hasn't gotten to the point where it's extreme but we want to give her tools so that it doesn't get that way. I myself have had issues with anxiety my whole life so I'm sure much of the problems stem from hereditary.

After reading this, I gained more compassion for my child, and I was better equipped to handle his anxiousness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tools and information based on the latest research
THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Eide's empower and inspire - A must own!
Brock and Fernette Eide are knowledgable, compassionate, experienced and speak to their audience in an authentic and easily understood voice. After years of doctor's, therapies, tests, etc - one conversation with them opened up a world of understanding that no other phd or professional could provide. More importantly - they can relate with the children in a positive manner. I've had to educate our school about learning differences. Every educator must read this book. There are so many children going through years of frustration in school that is unnecessary. This book will empower and inspire you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read!
In today's world of ADHD escapism, learning disability over-diagnosis and medication-happy classroom environments, The Mislabeled Child is a much needed and called for resource for frazzled and frustrated parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Completes
When I first reviewed The Giver years ago, I loved it.Until I got to the end.It felt woefully incomplete. It wasn't simply that the reader was required to imagine possibilities. It felt like the author hadn't finished showing us her theme. Now she has with this sequel, and I only wish I could go back to increase the stars on The Giver, for the sequel has pulled up that book as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gathering Blue

People thought that she was no good and couldn't do anything for the community. One of the women of the community had taken her land and made it into a place for their small children. These same women didn't agree that Kira should stay; she had gone to the Council of Guardians with the situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
My granddaughter loved the explanations about autism in this book. She is 9, and it is written where she can understand more about the behaviors of her brother with autism. She was even going to take it to school for her teacher to read, and some of her classmates. Many adults would benefit from reading it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARCHING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER
This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior.Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions.Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Many spectrum behaviors overlap and Asperger's, while considered at the higher end of the autism spectrum does indeed share common neuro-sensory ground with autism.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of hope
This book gives lots of case stories of adults with ADD.The book is long, but easy to read. There is lots of information about ADD, its diagnosis, and the newest treatments for it.But most of all, this book offers lots of hope for adults with ADD, that they can have happy and full, productive lives.

As an adult with ADHD, I really appreciated this book's frank approach to all the sides of having ADHD. The authors have it too, which helps, because they are successful professionals. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!
This is a fabulous book on autism acceptance. This is great for teachers or parents that want their kids to better understand someone that is "different" than the others. It is well written and really presents a creative way of introducing Autism and other spectrum disorders to kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have.
I purchased this book after reading the reviews. Our seven year old son is on the Autism Spectrum and his daycare friends had lots of questions about his behaviors and his limited language skills.I brought this book in for the teacher to read. The comment from the teacher was "They got it."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book for Kids to Understand
I bought this book for my sons K-1 class. The book explains what autism is on a level for young children to understand and the kids loved the coloring aspect of it. His teacher loved the adult explainations of each page. My 8 year old borrowed the book to read to his 2nd grade class so that they could understand his brother! I read this book to my Introdution to Early Childhood class and my teacher agreed, this book should be purchased. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone whose child is going into a different learning environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Melissa Albert's review is filled with inaccuracies
Like Catherine Maurice, I have two children that were diagnosed with autism at age two; one in 1994 and the other in 1996. I am a registered nurse and a long-time autism advocate. My kids are at opposite ends of the spectrum at this point but both were very severe at diagnosis. I cannot help but wonder what field Ms. Albert is in; perhaps a restaurant reviewer? She appears to have so little basic knowledge of autism, its symptoms and effective evidence-based treatments. Do you have or know any children with autism Ms. Albert? The Maurice kids displayed very classic signs of autism and the doctors that diagnosed them and later published a study detailing their descent into autism and recovery are some of the most respected autism experts in the country. To question their credibility and the reality of her children's diagnosis just makes Ms. Albert look foolish. And to actually endorse Martha Welch's holding therapy, which borders on child abuse, along with other useless or unproven treatments just adds to the absurdity of her claims.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, just a bit dated at this point
As a special ed teacher of an autistic classroom, I found this book very interesting. It was written at a time when ABA treatment for autism was a little known and cutting edge treatment, whereas now you can barely Google the word 'autism' without countless ABA references. As a result, Ms. Maurice describes a journey through a world of therapy options that have fallen by the wayside in today's treatment world...play therapy, holding therapy, and the like. This book is famous because it helped, in part, to make ABA the widely used therapy it is today.

Editorial Review

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children. In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others. The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver Book
In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever.I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive".I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages.A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day.I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child.I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit".She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her.She has never, ever had another "sugar fit".I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feingold Cookbook for Hyperactive Children
I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983.My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it.It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a life changing book!
For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives.Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect ofcemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODDson and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole familytried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son isnow 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a musicscholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for hisdiet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and hasnever been on drugs to control his behavior!Thank you DR. Fiengold!Welove you!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good solid book for both lawyers and educators.
This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertainto these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to bothstudents, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws areapplied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, andwhat can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books ondisability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants inthe process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandablewithout having to go to law school to get a background in law first. Isuggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who areinterested in working with those with disabilities in regular schoolsettings. 2-0 out of 5 stars ADD parent not satisfied!
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc.Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it?When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all.So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info.Just not what I had purchased it for at all!=(

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents with ADHD kids
This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place. ... Read more

This book was recommended to me by my son's Doctor. It is very detailed and informative. It is a great choice to learn more about ADHD. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Complete and Solid Parents' Guide
As a fully licensed clinical psychologist and the author of Parenting Kids with ADD/ADHD: Real Tools for Real Life I feel uniquely qualified to say that Dr. Barkley's book is the MOST complete ADHD-related parenting book in print today. It offers a complete review of the scientific literature related to ADHD, and describes scientifically supported treatments. This volume could be improved by being more user friendly, and somewhat less dense (goals I attempted to meet in my own volume mentioned above).
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, thought provoking, but utterly cold and empathy-free
I came to this book as a skeptic, and as someone who wants nothing to do with the meds. I had avoided reading Barkley because I knew him to be a big drug guy.Read more
