5-0 out of 5 stars What a great idea......
Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
This book is wonderful and helps me so much with my Asperger's son.I was even able to share it with my son's special education teacher. She thought it was wonderful. It's a great resource for Asperger's children who have a special interest. It's a way to communicate with them.Well worth your money.I'm buying another copy to donate to my son's school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hats Off to This Book!
Autism and its related condition, Asperger's Syndrome are neurobiolgical conditions that affect sensory processing and communication. The range is as great as there are people on the a/A spectrum and there are often overlapping behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
I'm a teacher and this book gave me a ton of new ideas to use with my class of students with autism. It makes you think of things you never would have and has helped me to remember some things I may have forgotten. It is definetely worth the money!I think it would be great for anyone who has been affected by autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
I have shelves filled with books with 'how to' and I have tried them all. My son, Brian now 14, has severe mental retardation, there are very few books for 'teaching' children like him.I took a chance on this one, and worth it.Thanx to the notes in the book I no longer try and stop him from bitting his hands, but understadning why, all of us at home started to take notes of when and what happened before and now we focus on the what happens before. This is just one excellent example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!
This is the best books for me and my son, with this book, I havelearned, everything about of my son tofocus his life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its and Bits of Small Steps
Small Steps is a book about a boy named Thedore(Armpit) who tries to turn his life around. While doing so, his friend X-Ray gets him into this scheme to sell tickets to the biggest popstar sensation, Kaira DeLeon. Miraculously, through his disabled nieghbor he develops a relationship with Kaira.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Awsome book
The book small steps is Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have all ready recomended it to my whole class. I think this book was very adventueres but still could have happend. Pleeeeeeease make a sequel to this book

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Boring
Small Steps is too predictable in the first half. You can tell what is going to happen with X-ray and Armpit trying to sell the scalped tickets but it takes too long to get there. The second half is where it gets exciting and unpredictable. In the first half you see the puzzle pieces before they're in, in the second half puzzle pieces come flying in from all different directions. Will X-ray and Armpit sell the scalped tickets? Is Armpit in love with Tatiana, a girl at school, or the famous singer Kaira DeLeon? I think it has too much bad language and in a competition Holes would win 24-7. Others may disagree but this is what I think. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good observations, good data, but the conclusion is a bit overdrawn
The authors open with a number of anecdotes about the ways in which excessive homework interferes with family dinners, vacations, family conversations, conversations among siblings, pleasure reading, and a variety of other activities that teenagers are normally engaged in.This sets the tone for the whole book; the authors rely extensively on anecdotes to carry their story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the help for my toddler
She really breaks it down and helps me understand my son's sleep patterns, what he needs me to do and what I may want to consider changing in our routine.I've made a few changes as she suggested and so far so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must for any parents with toddlers
I read countless books on sleeping out of desperation.I've met a few parents who think they have all the answers to the sleep problem and they have only one child who happened to be 'not normal' and sleep well.I wish I had read this book much earlier.I tried cry-out methods (and there're many variations) and they only work temporarily.Everytime we sleep over at our in-laws, one of them get sick, or something changed, we had to go through the horrible cry-out methods over and over again.I've been thinking I am not persistent and can't control my own kids (I have two boys 4 & 2 1/2).While reading this book, I assessed my kids' sleep habits and was relieved they're normal and getting enough sleep.I just needed to adjust a few little things and even before I finished the book, everyone (including myself!) started sleeping better at night.Night routines are much more pleasant.Of course, there are nights they wake up and come to get me, but armed with helpful information, I can deal with it much more effectively and everyone quickly goes back to sleep.I feel much happier since I am getting better sleep at nights. We're expecting our third and I am going to read her book on babies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take the scary out of ADHD for your kid
My [...] is a good reader so this book was at his level. However, we both sat down and read through it. It gave me some great hints as well as helping him to view his problem as managable. He especially liked the illustrations and puzzles scattered throughout the book - clearly with ADHD kids in mind! I am currently plowing through some adult books on ADHD and I keep referring back to this book for a more straight forward approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I got this book when my son was first diagnosed with ADHD and it is wonderful. It helped me understand what he was going through and him understand that he was just different. This book helped him to realize that he wasn't alone and that there are ways to help him help himself. My son feels that he has more control of things and is not afraid to ask questions or for help when needed. He not embarrased by ADHD it's just part of who he is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for all special needs situations, but helpful
The methods in this book detail considerable sacrifice of parents time and resources devoted to one child; in a multiple child or two-working parent household, this would not be as beneficial and produce results as claimed from Floor Time program. Also, there are many types of special needs children with needs not addressed in this book. While overall helpful and a must-read for involved parents, continue seeking assistance from local programs and teachers/therapists, and use this as one small part of your reading list. This book does not address all the needs of all special needs children, but it is helpful and gives detailed explanations and plans to begin with.We have four special needs children with four separate diagnoses, so we are not first time parents, nor is this book the definitive program or resource for any of the four.Read it, try it, then continue researching and resourcing!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Read for Parents with Autistic Children
Our 20-month old son was diagnosed by two separate agencies (one was South Carolina's Department of Disabilities and Special Needs) in August of 2005. We had fought for some sort of diagnosis since he was about one year old, due to SO many issues we saw that were not present with our first children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It's hard to really review a book on Floortime because you're not discussing the book so much as the techniques behind it. As a speech therapist, I got into this method because it mirrored my basic instinctive approach to and ideas about therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills
This book gives language teachers a great wealth of information regarding dyslexia and reading problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars A parent's point of view
...this is a great book that I'vesearched for.It pulls tons of useful information about dyslexia into one spot.Only one warning I would send out to parents - this is a textbook not a "pop culture" book.I've found the reading slow going as I'm unfamiliar with many of terms and concepts as I'm not a linguist or teacher.Having said that, I belive I now understand how to help my daughter learn easier which will open many previously closed doors to her.The textbook is worth the effort!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Goldmine of Theory and Practicality

Editorial Review

Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of his peers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities. From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations, Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different types of ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work: from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medication recommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether the reader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with the disease.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit disorders, based on data, not dogma
Healing ADD is a very readable presentation of the scientific evidence for Attention Deficit Disorders. It contains effective treatment recommendations, based on real world clinical experience. Insightful case histories accompany SPECT brain scans of actual patients, illuminating the physical reality of the disorders and the impact of various pharmaceutical, nutritional, psychotherapy and herbal treatments.
1-0 out of 5 stars Safe, is it really?
In page xvii of the introduction, Dr. Amen writes "Stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, or Dexedrine are among the safest and most effective medications in psychiatry". That sounds reassuring until you read the article in Medical News Today (August 22, 2006) mentioning that "Dexedrine and Ritalin are drugs used to treat ADHD. The FDA announced changes to their labels, and possibly those of some other ADHD drugs, to include a warning of a risk of heart problems and psychotic behavior". That is not reassuring at all. This book is writing in an authoritative style - sort of the bible of ADHD, the book that tells you what it is, and how to go about it. The only problem is that it is flawed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Dr. Amen did an excellant job of explaining ADHD and the brain based research that he's done in a way that's easy to read and understand. It's a great resourse for those looking to understand how the brain is affected by this disorder and the way a variety of treatments can be effective. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Morgan Menzie's Diary of an anorexic girl is truly amazing and heartfelt. It is by far one of the best diaries that i have ever read. It goes deep into Blythes descent into Anorexia and to her recovery. I used to anorexic, so this truly touched me. Though it may be triggering to someone who is still battling an ED it is worth the Read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk About Real!!!
Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written
This book was probably the best book that I ever read. I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. When Blythe would be so close in getting a boyfriend and then fly off the handle it would get me worked up, and it made me want to tell her "Calm down. Do you know what you doing?" I would get happy for her when she was so close to a boyfriend and something to bring happiness into her life, and then she would do something crazy and destroy all my hopes of her being happy. I couldn't believe that Becca was so stupid and didn't realize that she wasn't getting better. I can't believe that she just believed the food charts that Blythe did, even though she hadn't gained any weight or looked any diifferent. I was like "How stupid can you be lady!" This book really gets you involed and it made me wonder how people can be anorexic, but the problem is not their eating it is caused by something else. Once you figure out that problem and get it solved it will be easier to get yourself back on track and keep you regular. ... Read more

While Dr. Grandin's poignant unraveling of the mysteries of autism deserves the accolades it has received, her perspectives on animals are deeply tainted by her research into "humane" slaughter techniques, which ultimately have an economic rather than a purely scientific rationale. After all, the meat industry cares not one iota about whether animals are treated humanely or not, only whether they can be "disassembled" as quickly and efficiently as possible. Thus, while Grandin's work may indeed make the treatment of farm animals more humane when they reach their brutal demise, it nevertheless facilitates the expansion of an industry that is anything but humane, bringing ever greater numbers of animals under the sway of its remorseless logic of bloodthirsty death. History does not judge the petty functionaries of the Final Solution, the ones who devised more efficient means of killing human beings, to be heroes; nor should history judge Temple Grandin to be a savior of animals. If her concern for animals goes as deep as she claims it does, she should turn the wealth she garners from the meat industry against its practices, donating all of her meat industry earnings to animal rights causes. Ultimately that is the only way she can begin to free herself of the moral stain of responsibility for the brutal death of innocent creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and beautiful!
This book is an incredibly insightful view into the world of autism and animals. I've read a few books written by autistic authors just because I am extremely curious of neurological conditions that drastically alter one's perception and experience of the world and Temple Grandin being a highly intelligent and sensitive person is able to articulate her world with great detail and poetry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Easy-to-Read
I am a contract instructor who uses this book for an undergraduate level "Exceptional Children in the Classroom" class.I chose this text because it is practical and not as dry as Heward, another widely respected author of special education texts. Many strategies are provided for meeting the needs of students with disabilities as well as gifted students, those who are at risk, and those who are linguistically and culturally diverse.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who interacts with children!
I originally purchased this book for an education courss. This book offered insight on the inclusion of Special students in a general education class. It offers insights on how to best teach students with various needs including learning disabilites, physical disabilties, and other disabilties. As a teacher it taught me what my resources are. I learned the benefits of inclusion and the positive results that special students need. If you are taking this class they also offer outlines for every chapter at the cwx.prenhall.website as well as testing resources. This edition is almost exactly the same as the 6th.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for teachers!
An excellent reference tool for everyone involved in education. It provides updated information on special students, ways to help them learn more effectively, and a wealth of resources for those who work with them. Each chapter is introduced with real life examples of those students weoften encounter and know not how to deal with and tips and suggestions onhow to teach them more effectively. This book also helped me clarifyseveral legal concepts as well as the most recent terminology used in thearea of special education, and it certainly helped me ace my course! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult task made easier!
I am so thankful that I chose this book over others that deal with toilet training.I did not realize how teaching someone on the spectrum how to use the potty is very different in many ways, than someone who's not. This book deals with those issues. It brings to light some very important routines and activities to follow.Especially for someone who is new to the world of Autism, this is a book that I highly recommend that you include in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great ideas!
If you ever thought that toilet training was no big deal, try training a child with special needs...a whole different story. This book gives some great tips on how to go about it when the odds are against you.Determining readiness, common problems and solutions and developing a routine, are just some of the topics covered in this book.It is a must have for special ed. teachers as well as parents of individuals with autism and related disorders.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful - explains what 's going on from your child's perspective
While we successfully opted to use a different training method to train our 4 year-old dughter- this book was very good at making sense out of our daughter's behavior. An autistic child can really be a challange to understand under normal curcumstances- the volume goes waaaaaay up when potty training. We would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to take on this very big job.Take what you can from this book and choose the method that feels most likely to work.Be committed.Chin up.You can do it.Good luck. ...
