5-0 out of 5 stars even if you have never been to a yoga class ...
... this book will still be of great interest and value to you if you are spiritually inclined.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but only for professionals
This beautiful book from the world teacher Iyengar was difficult to read, and I am teaching yoga already for 25 years. So, for me it was marvellous, but not recommended for beginners.
5-0 out of 5 stars The theory behind the practice
There was yoga before the time of Patanjali but it was not written down, or at least no text survives. We find elements of the practice in the Upanishads and of course in the Bhagavad Gita. But before Patanjali's codification there was no systematic text to guide the aspirant.Since then Patanjali's sutras have been translated into many languages along with commentary to elucidate the concise text, with Vyasa's commentary from the ninth century--upon which Iyengar makes some reliance--being the most important. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Dash Diet Action Plan
It was a great read. It was informative but not a boring. I would reccomend this to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes it easy!
The other books, and the federal guidelines didn't make it easy to follow the DASH diet. Finally, a book that makes it practical. It has real life suggestions, without getting too bogged down in the minutia of how the research was done. This plan helped me lower my blood pressure. And I didn't expect that I would find it so easy to lose weight, too. Real common sense approach (that isn't really so common today). Definately recommended for anyone who wants a healthy way of eating, rather than a fad diet that makes big promises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but overpriced
When I received this book, I almost thought it was the wrong book.Although there is a lot of information, much of it is common sense.I received another book that was less than $10 more but the author is well known and the book was three times the size with pictures and extensive information. If this DASH book is going to get many sales, the price definitely needs to drop.I was honestly expecting a lot of recipes and would never have ordered it if I hadn't seen it first.Sorry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Stunning!
Jayme Barrett has written a book on feng shui that is highly informative, readable, easy to use, and beautiful to look at. This book absolutely helped me to change tracks. Just beginning to implement the suggestions in this book has resulted in increasing my energy and motivation as well as improving my overall mood. The book is filled with gorgeous photographs by Jonn Coolidge that beautifully illustrate the ideas presented by Jayme. It is a joy to read as well as to browse through the pictures. I've read the book several times now and have begun to suspect that I will have to buy a backup copy since I will probably wear this one out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cannot get enough of this book!
I will read Feng Shui Your Life by Jayme Barrett over and over again. It is well written, colorful and timely. Anyone who wants to feel better about themselves and happier in their personal surroundings should definitely read it. I have shared it with family and friends. Great gift idea, as well! ... Editorial Review

People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France, the multiday bicycle race famous for its grueling intensity. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. While his vocabulary is a bit on the he-man side (highest compliment to his wife: "she's a stud"), his actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him. There's serious medical detail here, which may not be for the faint of heart; from chemo to surgical procedures to his wife's in vitro fertilization, you won't be spared a single x-ray, IV drip, or unfortunate side effect. Athletes and coaches everywhere will benefit from the same extraordinary detail provided about his training sessions--every aching tendon, every rainy afternoon, and every small triumph during his long recovery is here in living color. 2-0 out of 5 stars trash
we all know this story, but if you want to read a cocky, self absorbed version from lance's perspective pick this up. horribly written, some attempts are made at poeticism ("I keep riding, into the highest peering hills, up the pitch of a mountainside, where green leaves quiver in the cold sun") but overall i'd probably get more out of a 2 page summary of his life on wikipedia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
Lance provides a lot of insight into his life, who he is, and how he became the greatest cyclist in the world in this book! This book covers his life from birth to the 2nd Tour de France win.The dedication he has to his job (cycling) is so impressive.A truly inspirational story....

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic- One of the best books I have ever read
I must say that this is easily one of the best books I have ever read, and probably the most inspirational. It delves deep into the realms of the human spirit, against the worst of odds.Lance Armstrong isn't just the single greatest athlete of our generation, hes an American hero, and he beat cancer.Yes, he did not just survive, he defeated it, and proved it can be done.I have never had cancer, I have never fought against unbelieveble odds. This man has, and he tells his story in a remarkable, touching, and humane way.Fantastic Read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Also Good for Fathers-To-Be
One of the very few stipulations my wife made after we learned we were going to have a child is that I read this book by the doyenne of natural childbirth in the U.S. While the tone of the book is much too touchy-feely/hippyish for me, I have to admit that it is well worth reading regardless of whether you're planning a natural childbirth or a fully tech'ed out hospital one. That said, it would be very easy to read it as gospel and get swept up in its giddy repudiation of modern medicine, so one should approach it with, if not a skeptical eye, at least with one's critical faculties fully engaged. There is also the potential that readers who are fully committed to a hospital birth may come away from this book feeling scolded, or as if their decision is somehow"wrong".
5-0 out of 5 stars Ina May is an Inspiration to all women
I read Ina May's book "Spiritual Wifery" and was inspired to get a midwife for the birth of my child (I am now 34 weeks). This book is even better thatn the 1st because it is 1) up to date, 2)has clear recommendations on what to do to have an unmedicated birth and 3) full of science and positive birth stories, she separates fact from fiction. And there's a lot of fiction out there concerning birth in the USA!Every woman should read this book, especially pregnant women.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I love all of Ina May's books, but this one is, hands down, the best book on childbirth out there. It tottaly changed my perceptions on childbirth, my body, etc., and it is very informative when it comes to the topic of interventions and the choices that women have. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initial hyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deep breath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presented in this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise for presenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, and the multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organized chapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and body awareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques to try and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stress management, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focus on daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifying key elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differently to these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For this edition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser Permanente Online), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-Ashbury Psychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worry control, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and a more reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typos and graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Weight Loss Surgery Patients
This book is amazing. If you have had recent weight loss surgery or if you are thinking about having it, you must read this book.Paula outlines everything you could ever imagine and answers the questions that we all have about weight loss surgery. After reading this book there is no doubt in my mind that I am going to have the weight loss surgery. In the book Paula gave me the courage to want a better and new life for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a life saver for me
Being aware that my surgery would be life altering, I was nervous about how to proceed with the rest of my life post-operation. Paula Peck's book was written with such care, concern and intelligence that upon turning the final page I realized my anxiety had completely left me and that I literally held a blue-print for success in my hands. Thank goodness for Paula's sensitivity, charm and wit. This is a honest guide to living and coping after weight-loss surgery - and who knew? A funny one too! Kudos for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pre-operation necessity.
I could not put Exodus from Obesity down.I highlighted it and even felt compelled to email Paula Peck, the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Absolutely the best first book to get on the subject of essential oils.I have purchased a few others, and this is by far, the best in the lot.I take it everywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
There are other reviews that go into great detail about what is in this book. I will only add this and say it has been a useful book in many ways. It has paid for itself in stress relief recipes alone. It is interesting and helpful and has cured what ails my family many times over.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for essential oil blends
I love using this book to compare and contrast with Roberta Wilson's "Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Vibrant Health and Beauty."The two books are similar in many ways, though I do consider Roberta Wilson's book to be somewhat better.Nevertheless, I'd still recommend having both on hand, as you can learn a lot from both. There are many blends to choose from in Worwood's book, and lots of ways to get ideas to formulate your own blends.I also enjoy the fact that the book is grouped by condition, which makes it very easy to find information regarding specific issues. There's also a lot of background information on both essential oils and the various states of being they address.I do have one gripe, though, and strangely enough, it's not even about her coverage of essential oils.In one of the chapters, she refers to Bloody Mary as Queen of Scots, which just blows me away, as these are two totally different people.I really would have expected a better knowledge of Northern European history coming from a native of that very region.Other than that and Worwood's questionable knowledge of felines where EOs are concerned, I would still recommend this book as a good addition to your essential oil library. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
This book lacks the depth it seems to promise. Some of the illustrations are lacking. There is not enough meat to help anyone with special needs learners. I would suggest you look elsewhere. I was greatly disappointed since the majority of work by Jensen is wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistically speaking, an idealistic book
The information is great! It all makes sense; but the realistic view is, who can really afford it? Ideally, yes, eat all of the food God intended you to, but look in the grocery stores and realize that you will be paying twice your normal grocery bill! The variety that God has provided is vast; however you realize how restrained it is when our menus rely so heavily on sauces, frostings and rich gravies; they are gone in this realm. You do feel better, but today's market makes it hard to live the way God wants you to. Another point well made is our need to do exercise - at least a little per day. It is a shame that in our society we are so overloaded with time constraints and responsibilities that it is hard to fit it all in. Overall, a very informative book, but will you stick with it?

4-0 out of 5 stars Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth. However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations. While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars book for everyone
We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe.I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option.I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technically accurate, boring read
I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt
This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written with practical solutions
My son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers so I purchased many books on the subject to better help him. This book by far offers the most practical solutions to everyday school issues.Reading about theories and studies is helpful up to a point but as a parent I needed hands on solutions to common problems and this book provided many options that have worked for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Singing to the Choir!
I haven't found anyone who hasn't found this book incredibly valuable. I have bought at least four of them because my friends keep "borrowing" them and somehow don't manage to get them back to me. It is such a helpful book that lays out point by point how our kids experience elementary school, their various challenges and how to deal with them. Any parent who is actively involved with their child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome should have this book as a reference. And every elementary school teacher working with our AS kids should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every AS parent should have one of these
Since my son's diagnosis at the end of first grade, I've been purchasing book after book, trying to educate myself. The realities of being a parent of an AS child means that you have to educate, not only yourself, but your child's teachers. This book is a great way to go about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Age Appropriate
I bought this book for my four-year old.The age recommendation is four to eight. The text is entirely too graphic and detailed for children of this age.Parts of the book read like KISS lyrics or soft-porn.While this book is factually accurate and contains anatomically correct pictures, it is NOT age-appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was how I learned "the facts of life" :)
I remember thinking this was a great book when I was a little kid. I agree with the reviewer who said that it's most appropriate for small children; I was probably 5 or 6 when my mom gave it to me. I remember it being very cute, and not the least bit distasteful. Half of my family works as delivery room nurses, so I was asking lots of questions early on! I know folks whose parents were so embarrassed about giving "the talk" that they learned everything from kids on the school bus, etc. This book is a great way of presenting information in a way young children can understand, without having to lie to them or change the subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are a little much...
Other than the picture of mommy and daddy in the bath tub together, I think this is a pretty good book.It puts this part of life in todler terms. If you are easily offended by graphics, don't buy this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.
