5-0 out of 5 stars an inner journey
Atul Gawande's book "Complications" is a rewarding read on many levels. The reader is drawn in smoothly along a thread of entertaining medical vignettes. These anecdotes serve as the framework for a set of well reasoned essays that explore the inner life of the surgeon.Gawande's primary purpose is to convey thevarious challenges, surprises, and contradictions that he has encountered as a surgical resident. His scrupulous honesty in describing the motivations, limitations, exhilarations, foibles, and challenges of the surgical profession is refreshing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written reflections of what it is to work in medicine
This book was required for a friend's ethics class and she could not stop talking about it! I had to read it, too, thanks to her. We are nursing students, about to embark on our clinical rotations, and have both been strongly affected by this real and wonderfully written book. Dr. Gawande really has captured everything for the reader, who is left profoundly more knowledgable about a challenging and difficult, but rewarding, profession. He is amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Behind The Curtain
The medical profession, for much of its lifetime, has been shrouded in mystery. For many, the words and judgements of a doctor seem infallible, which is why there is often such incredulity associated with mistakes. It's only been in the past few decades that this has changed and people are learning that doctors are humans too. In Atul Gawunde's book, we get a behind the scenes look at his life as a resident in Internal Medicine and some of the truths that people must accept take place when they enter a hospital. What amazes me most about Gawunde's writing is his use of anecdotes to perpetuate his arguments and ideas. His experiences have been so rich and varied that he is able to draw upon so many fascinating cases to highlight some of the great and some of the not so great aspects of medicine and of learning to be a physician. Anyone who would like to be a doctor - and especially those who want to go into any surgical field - will benefit from this open and honest account of what it truly means to be a doctor. I was thoroughly engaged and even scared to learn about what often goes on in the mind of the person wielding the scalpel blade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
One of the best books I have read on alternative treatments. The chapters on Protocel were fantastic. Anyone contemplating using Protocel should definitely read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative----Easy to Read.
The book itself is very educational, also, has a lot of information on titles of other good reads to look for as well as phone numbers and places to seek treatments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Outsmart Your Cancer Reader Review
Overall, I thought that the book presents a credible case for using alternative treatments for cancer although there are substantial areas where clarification is needed. The author, Tanya Harter Pierce, is not a doctor and states that the book is the result of extensive personal research carried out by herself after a family member was diagnosed with cancer.

Editorial Review

Forget the high-carb, low-carb debate. The glycemic index (GI)--a measure of carbohydrate quality based on how quickly a food raises blood-glucose (blood sugar) levels--is the dietary key to health, say the authors. Contrary to other diets that treat carbohydrates as all alike, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guidlines Not a Formula
This book shed a lot of light on why I was not succeding in my weight loss goals.I had already given up almost all sugar and all artifical sweetners, eating mostly whole grains, and had been doing a 45-60 min cardio workout 3 times a week and getting no where in the 50 lbs I need to lose.In the past I had a lot of success following Atkins, but felt that it was unhealthy and it left me feeling sluggish and miserable.I stopped Atkins and started the daily losing battle with my weight. After three weeks of following the basic principals I have had successful weight changes for the first time in a long time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is This a Book?
Is this a book to help out women who suffer from being misinformed about menopause or an advertisement for progesterone cream?Didn't help me at all, if anyone wants to buy it, it's yours but I don't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener Sans The Wool
Back-to-back, I've read this book and the other one by Dr. John Lee, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre Menopause: Balance Your Hormones And Your Life From Thirty To Fifty."Although the one just mentioned is more pertinent to my age group, and both books cover much of the same ground, I chose to review this book because it seems to be more in-depth.Both books, however, are laden with valuable information for women of any age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not "Everything" you need to know
Dr. Sears seems to have spent the better part of his children's lives writing books about which he has no experience. His relegation of the father's role to secondary exemplifies his own inadeqacies.Back to the book.I'm sure it's useful to those mothers and fathers who never had the oral tradition training for parenthood and need a little help, but I would much rather recommend other types of reading for parents and parents-to-be.Spend some time on Native American spirituality. A little more time on books dealing with your nutrition prior to conception(BOTH PARENTS.)Try some humor, like Nora Efron to keep your spirits balanced.Learn about your body, mind, and spirit and that of your child by reading and listening to Rayna Gangi. Dr. Sears. You may help those who have no clue, but you need some further reading yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful and complete
A very userful book especially for new parents. It doesn't take anything for granted telling you everything you should know about your child. I could find answers to very common and "normal" concerns about my baby, that no one told me before (as for exaple that babies are not silent while sleeping, being in perfect health!)and important suggestments to detect more serious illnesses (such as GERD!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Try It Out, and you'll see it works for you
I received this book several years BEFORE I became a mother--and decided it seemed a little too much for me.There was NO WAY I would ever sleep with my baby, breastfeed for more than 8 months, or carry the baby EVERY WHERE I went. However, I did appreciate that they valued the relationship between parent and baby, and that they were respectful of the child's needs and abilities, as well as the parent's needs and abilities. They also had some helpful ideas about food allergies, which runs in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a parent!
This book is what I've been looking for: a book that teaches you HOW to teach social skills and organization skills for kids that just don't pick it up from interactions in everyday life. It's made a big difference in our everyday family and school life for my 2 ADHD/LD kids. My thanks to Rick Lavoie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book!
Writing as someone who has lived with learning disabilities for nearly 50 years now, I cannot say strongly enough that I sincerely wish all of my teachers and parents had read this book.I will go a little further than that---I wish the pastoral counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrists that I have dealt with as an adult would read this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good as far as it goes
This book provides what sound like good tips for helping a child struggling with social skills.Whether they work, I really can't say, as applying everything here would be the work of a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to mindfulness meditation
I'm sad to see a reviewer be so judgmental about this audio - especially one who claims to respect the teachings of the Buddha. These guided meditations are accessible for anyone, without the baggage of what some might call a religion - Buddhism. (For me, it's a philosophy more than a religion, and I have learned more about Buddha and his teachings because of these audios.)As cassette tapes, these audios were my introduction to the practice, and they resonated for me then, and still do after 13 years.
1-0 out of 5 stars a dumbed-down version of old Buddhist texts - ex. Satipatthana Sutta
It's very disappointing to read/listen to individuals who take old buddhists texts and re-interpret the texts as their own.Kabat-Zinn borrows so much and rarely mentions Buddhism.Pitiful.For those critically evaluating the book/audio, it's useful to note that many of these new ideas are actually old ones; simply because no one has a copyright on old buddhist texts doesn't imply that we can without impunity stealthily borrow their ideas without citation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed by the lack of creativity brought to this expensive set of cd's.I'm sorry to say, "Guided Mindfulness Meditation" was silent, and slow going.Metaphors, stories, nuggets, and music were missing. My first purchase of Dr. Kabat-Zinn's work was the audiotape, "Wherever You Go There You Are".Dr. Kabat-Zinn did a great job here through his use of voice, music, and text.He was able to transport me to a peaceful state, his soothing voice lyrically illustrating relaxation metaphors.Soothing music was the backdrop for his interesting approach mixing together fact and story.I was hoping "Guided Mindfullness Meditation" would be just as inviting. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have a 19 year old son that has been on stimulants since age 5.The stimulants work but we're always searching for a better, easier and cheaper solution. We've tried all types of naturals treatments and biofeedback but they did not work.I was hoping that Lawlis' book offered some new insights into ADD and it's causes and treatment. However, I was disappointed to read the same old suggestions about nutrition, diet, biofeedback, etc.I don't disagree that some people benefit from these treatments but Dr. Lawlis didn't present any new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Parent's Perspective
I have a 14 yo son with ADHD and I've read too many books on the subject. I took my son off all meds a year ago because the cure was becoming worse than the diagnosis and realized that the meds were masking his emotional problems even though he went to Psychciatrists and Psycologists, Pediatric Neurological Behavioralists-the list seemed eternal.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless Drivel !!!
I have been in practice for over 25 years, treating adults and children alike, I have read many books on the subject of ADD and ADHD and frankly I found this book to be full of the same old sham treatments that don't work any better than snake oil.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very easy way to be introducted to this concept
This is a book that is very easy to read and introduces a western person to concepts of Budism without the religious part.It is a great way to learn concepts that are helpful in daily life.It can help a person to be more focused and effective in life by being mindful. This is a must read.He also has CDs or Tapes for meditation which are very easy to learn to meditate from.It is not religious either. It is just focusing on your breath. This is budism that can be incorporated into the life of anyone of any faith because it is just the concepts and not the religious aspects, but after learning these things one might want to explore more into a faith that creates such wonderful things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was loaned this book when I was pregnant with our first child and since then have bought it for every person I knew who was pregnant. Other pregnancy books sugarcoat this like "your might feel a little discomfort this month" where Armin Brott's book said: your wife will feel terrible this month. I liked that approach much more than the happy bunnies pregnancy-is-wonderful side. I would reccomend this book to everyone who is pregnant, moms and dads

5-0 out of 5 stars To become a Father
This book was wonderful. My wife and I both read this book. It has great humor to it and covers a lot of issues that a female's pregnancy book doesn't. Money, sex, the raging hormones and changes to her body from a mans point of view.I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book, to both mothers and fathers to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
My wife and I wanted to know as much as we can about having a baby. This is one of the books that stand out in its category and I bought it. I am very pleased with it! Mr. Brott describes what it takes to be a dream father-to-be. I was deeply impressed and I will do my very best to come as close to the described role model as possible because as my wife said: "What more a pregnant woman may ask for?" I am very happy that in addition to information about the baby are discussed so many and it was hard to believe that they are so many little but important things that I and only I must take of. I even had to face the frustration from 9 sexless months but that won't happen because I learnt from another bestseller scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex how to enjoy multi-orgasmswith or without her. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not his best work
I love Dyer's voice and thought this would be quite incredible so my expectations were high ~ my mistake. All is well until it comes to the sounds he is instructing the listener to chant and then his voice becomes the most annoying drone that distracts the meditation and thus defeats the purpose.Later he adds some affirmations that seem out of place and throws your focus off even further. It may have been helpful if he had included some music in the background to make the recording more relaxing and give the listener something else to hear besides Dyer breathing between chants.Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of his work and always will be.However, I'm a little surprised that this recording remains on the market rather than being re-recorded to bring the quality to a higher standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Cruisin' Meditation
I love this CD.I have always felt silling trying to meditate at home, but have been using this in the car during my commute to and from home. No, I am not zoning-out while driving!I just chant along with Wayne & find myself calmer and more centered when I arrive at my destination. It's a great way to "shed the workday" before you get home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and inspiring resource
This book, intended for therapists, is a comprehensive, compassionate, and accessible guide to what Najavits establishes is the first crucial step for someone struggling with PTSD and substance abuse: learning to feel safe. It is also an excellent resource for patients who want to help themselves. What I like best is that the book is filled with checklists, stories, exercises, and quotations such that I can open to nearly any page and find ideas that are both practical and inspirational. In short, this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Powerful Book
Thank you for writing such a great book.I have suffered from addictions for years, tried many books and many methods.Working with a group or individual is one thing, but for me, nothing helps more than a book. It's on call twenty four hours a day and I can easily reference it.As far as books go...this one is by far the best. The most comprehensive and in-depth book I've read so far.It provided tremendous support and guidance on issues that often result in isolation. Most of all, it didn't talk down to me as a reader. That's something I don't need!Thank you for making this book available and writing it in such a helpful way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful volume for professionals
I can see why this book got such rave reviews and is such a best-seller.It's a superb book, offering both real insight into trauma and addiction, as well as hands-on clinical tools. As someone in the field, I have found both the philosophical and practical aspects of Najavits' work incomparable. On top of the impeccable professionalism, is her impressive writing. This is a must buy for anyone interested in this area. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As CEO at accounting giant KPMG, Eugene O'Kelly was so immersed in his job that over thecourse of a decade, he managed to have lunch with his wife on weekdays just twice. His travelschedule was set 18 months out. Once, he was so obsessed with impressing a potential client that hetracked down the man's travel schedule, booked the seat next to him on a flight, schmoozed the guyall the way to Australia, landed the account, and flew immediately back to Manhattan. His Type-A ways vanished when, at age 53, a top neurosurgeon in New York told him he had late- stage brain cancer. "His eyes told me I would die soon. It was late spring. I had seen my last autumnin New York." [p.7] Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful message for all who read...
Having just lost my own mother to Glioblastoma multiforme grade IV, I found this book comforting and relevant. It had a great message to share "take the time to tell those you love about the perfect moments you will remember about them". I have purchased a dozen copies since my first to send out to friends in memory of my own mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for accountant!
What an inspirational book! I read this book few days prior to a job interview with KPMG. Well good news is.. I got the job! but the message behind this book is "balance" and purpose of life. Life is too short and many people knew that, but we need a reminder once a while to put us into perspective again. Gene is a visionary behind KPMG and to lost someone like him is definitely a lesson to learn. As an accountant, we know how many hours we have to spend at work, but think it this way to balance it out.. treat your family like your client. They need as much time as your other clients need you too. I would recommend this book for any accounting major college students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous
This book is phenomenal. Those with a Type A personality will certainly appreciate the approach the author took to put closure on his impending death.Since another reader had mentioned that Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" was better, I had decided to read both books.I absolutely loved Chasing Daylight better although both books have value.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly generalized
When I bought this book, I was expecting helpful solutions, but all I got were general facts that most parents of autistic children already know. The book definitely needed more specific information on how to handle problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Autism:Helping Children Relate, Communicate & Think with the DIR Floortime Approach
This book is a must read for parents with an autistic child. This book is easy to read and understand. Dr. Greenspan has made me feel I will be able to help my son fully recover. This is the 1st time in 3 years I have hope!My son is moderate to severly autistic. We have been doing Floortime & have seen much success. What a natural way of helping him & having fun doing it.Thank you Dr. Greenspan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Engaging and Too Little Information
I have been a Learning Specialist for nearly twenty years at the high school and community college levels. When I read "Engaging Autism" by Stanley I. Greenspan, I was anticipating a book filled with fresh information, scientific validity, and ideas that could be realistically applied in a variety of classroom settings.Instead, I read page after page of disappointment.DIR/Floortime is an interesting/innovative approach for helping individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. However, this book was extremely weak in the following areas:repetition of the same ideas/concepts throughout the work, reliance on anecdotal information, no scientific validation of information, absence of an in-depth bibliography, frequent reference to products written by Greenspan and his team, and lack of organization throughout the text.DIR/Floortime is presented as too simplistic when in actuality it appears to be extremely time consuming and labor instensive which is impractical in contemporary public education settings. The author recommends homeschooling and intense family involvement as though this was a simple solution. However, parents uusually do not have the extensive time or expertise to devote to the DIR/Floortime approach. If you are interested in learning what DIR/Floortime entails, I recommend researching Internet sources or consulting works by other authors. This book is largely a waste of time for professionals in the field of special education.Unless you want to read a rehash of ideas over and over again, I would not waste my time with this book.I was going to order another book by Dr. Greenspan entitled "The Child With Special Needs:Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth" but will not be doing it at this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource on Autism
Well written and referenced within chapters and volumes. All you need to know regarding current research and best practice in the field of Autism.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb overview of research as it stands
Allowing for the inevitable time lag between copy editing, proof reading and final publication, this two volume set is as near as anyone will get at present to comprehensive state of the art reveiew of trends in research and therapy.Having digested the previous version - one volume with a blue cover - I was a little sceptical about the added-value that any new edition might bring.Honestly, I could not have been more wrong. There is a great deal more orgnaic science in this volume and the sections of therapy and interventions are well worth reading carefully. This review is not about the content of the book, more a case of witnessing that if you have bought the blue book, you should buy this set. ... Read more
